Respect

I’m going to fill everyone in on a great word to use, respect. Some people try to be cool, others want to be rich, but what every human being really wants is respect. There are very few compliments better than “I respect so and so.” Here are a few traits that help you gain respect and I’ll use this post to point them out.

Honesty – People can’t respect you if they don’t trust you. Once you fall into this category of untrustworthy, you can’t gain back someones respect.
Reliable – You say you are going to do something and then do it. There’s nothing worst then having someone say they are going to do something only to have it go unfinished. This goes hand in hand with punctuality. Always wondering or waiting on someone show their lack of seriousness towards issues at hand.
Intuitive – You don’t need people to tell you do something. You do it because you are smart enough to realize it needs to be done. You can’t gain respect if other people are constantly telling you what to do.
Talent – People respect talent because usually there is effort behind it. Some sort of learning or practice that was developed in order to excel. Physical gifts can sometimes make up talent but guys like Reggie Evans and Dennis Rodman earn respect for their hard work.

Nobody want to be known as a goofball. You want people who come in your company to value your opinions because they think you have something intelligent to say. This is usually how good friends develop because there can be a mutual respect. People who respect each other are less likely to squabble over stupidity. Not everyone though will believe in this post. Many people’s prerogative isn’t to gain respect of their peers. Although I do find this to be a reasonable means of life, I believe earning respect will make you a better, stronger person.

As Per Usual

I had a pretty typical weekend. I went to the bar on Friday night and had some drinks. On my walk home at 2am I walked into a random house party and was promptly asked to leave. On Saturday, my dad, Sam, and I went to a holiday party at our cousins. It was nice seeing everyone who we don’t see all that often and things went as smooth as they could. After that I drove into the city to hang out with the Wevs and the Wads along with 24 and Bake. We went to The Irish Pub and pretty much just hung out. The Shee said the Rum Bar had a dance floor so we went in there for a minute but we sort of stood out if you catch my drift. We hit the Sugarhouse late night and I booked a solid 75 dollar profit. I think I had some pretty big bets in the 3-400 dollar range along the session. Fantasy football playoffs are also ongoing and I got some tight games. In 2 out of 5 leagues I’m down to the final 4 and as we speak it’s close in both. I need Gronk to step up. Other than that thought I don’t have much going on.

Failing

The ebb and flow to life is odd. Sometimes it seems that it doesn’t matter what move you make things seem to work out for the best. Other times Murphy’s Law is present. I’ve been going through a stretch of the latter recently after a nice stretch of the former. Starting with the stock market, I bought 100 shares of the volatility index TVIX (the share price moves with the VIX) at $48.00 a share about 2 weeks ago. Today it is opening at 37.00 and I’m wondering if I’m smart to just sell and exit the position taking the 1,100 loss. The hardest thing with the market is taking a loss. Nobody, and I mean nobody, wants to sell something that is a loser. If you want the best reason to not invest, it’s that you never have any emotional ups and downs entering your life.

Another major blunder came in fantasy football last night. I picked up the Falcons D before the game last night and they went for 21 points. Sounds great except I forgot to start them. Getting 21 out of a D is tremendous but seeing them on my bench in a big playoff matchup is sickening. Especially because I’ve won the regular season for the 2nd straight year (with the most point scored) and this is a complete bragging rights league. So that was really disconcerting.

Stupid matters aside though, I’ve been feeling great and ran 3 miles in 17:24 yesterday and then did 2 straight miles on the track doing 400 meter intervals. I did the first 4 in 72, jogged a 100, 77, 105, 76, 110, 75, 110. It was a pretty good workout and physically I haven’t been in this good of shape in a real long time. This probably supersedes any money woes I may have. Should be a fine weekend upcoming and I have a few good posts in the pipeline that should be posted sometime this weekend. Thanks for reading.

Sad that this day will come

I read a great article by my man crush Chuck Klosterman. Nothing physical but I love this guy’s writing style. I wasn’t even aware of this grantland.com but he writes for it along with other esteemed colleagues. I thought the Noel Gallagher story was great as well as the Tim Tebow one. Getting off Klosterman’s dick, I read what I thought was an intriguing scenario that makes me sad to consider.

Reza Noubary, a professor of mathematics, computer science, and statistics at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania, has estimated “with 95 percent confidence” that the ultimate time for the 100-meter dash is 9.44. That number seems as good a guess as anything else. But if Noubary is correct, it would force us to accept a depressing, unreliable notion — it would essentially mean we’re about 25 years away from the pinnacle of human performance. It would mean that most of us will see the fastest man that could ever exist within our own lifetimes. And something about that just seems unlikely.

I agree 100% about the unlikely part. I’m not sure how this guy Noubary is so confident at predicting the future. He’s basically putting limitations on something that is as unpredictable as the next bball player to score 100 points in a game. I look at the way technology has evolved and the way we communicate today is something that people 50 years ago would have never even comprehended. I have to think that this translates somewhat to physical evolution. Who’s to say what type of advancements there will be made in everything from diet, exercise, genetics and everything else that comes into play for being the fastest human alive. I for one am not surprised by anything anymore. If one day we start being able to teleport from the start line to the finish line, I’m pretty sure that would set some new records.

I also wanted to touch on the depressing part about this idea of the future. People who were born in the 50’s are seeing this huge advancement in technology in 2011. My generation gets to see breakthroughs for the next 50 years. When you die, you don’t get to find out what awesome stuff is being unveiled. Ideally everyone would want to be in their prime (while living forever) and see what amazing things this Earth has to offer. People are really unbelievable in their ability to continue advancing in every single avenue. Knowing that you are going to die and not being able to see the future is a sad thing. I just imagine a completely different world in say, 200 years from now that it would blow my mind living in 2011.

Website for Sale

On a whim I decided to google “what is my website worth” and found this page which checks things like traffic, longevity, and information and then spits out a value. Rnningfool.com came out to be somewhere in the $4,000+ range. I checked out other sites and the value varied from $1-$5,000 bucks. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. I’m fairly certain that no one will pay me that much for this site but it’s good to see that there’s at least some light at the end of the tunnel. If someone said they’d give me 5k to sell my website I wouldn’t accept it anyway. I think my price is closer to 50k. There is a lot of blood, sweat, and tears in this site that non life changing money doesn’t touch.

The neat thing to note though is how all this traffic happened. Yesterday was the second day in a row with over 1,000 visitors and it is all Storage Wars traffic. As I found out, my MSPaint Brandi Mug shot comes up in the top 20 or so pictures on a search for Brandi in Google. I owe all my traffic to that stupid picture. Obviously Brandi is the perfect level of obscurity that there aren’t thousands of pictures of her and a person like me can take advantage of this. I’m considering dedicating my life to obscure celebrities who don’t get enough attention and then finding their mug shot pictures (or making one up). Seriously. It’s nice to know though that even a site without ads can still have value if it brings in enough traffic.

My 10 Minute Morning Routine

6:45 – Alarm goes off. I keep this across my room so I have to wake up and walk to turn it completely off. Not a snooze. I slide the bar to deactivate.
7:30 – I wake up again unsure of what time it is. Oddly enough it’s almost always aroudn this time. I know I should go to work and wake up.
7:31 – I sleep with boxers and socks so I need to dress. I put on my glasses that I left next to my desk so I can see. I then put on jeans, a tee shirt, my belt, shoes and a zip-hoodie. My job doesn’t have a dress code but this outfit is pretty standard to a fit into any situation.
7:34 – I put my keys, phone and wallet into my pockets and head out the door to warm the car for a few minutes (This step isn’t necessary in the summer).
7:35 – I walk into the bathroom and in this order – take a piss, wash my hands, brush my teeth, use Listerine mouthwash. I floss and fluoride at night so I feel like I don’t have to do it in the morning.
7:37 – I usually wonder if the car is going to warm by now and then head back into my room to make sure I didn’t forget anything important.
7:38 – I go out to the car and don’t lock the door to the house. I open my car door and leave it open. I walk back to the house and lock the door. I have this incredible fear of locking my keys in the car while it’s running. Basically I don’t trust the closing the door when the car is on. I just get this feeling that it sometimes locks when the keys are in the car.
7:39 – I start blasting Led Zeppelins “Ramble On” and get ready for a 25 minute Get The Led Out Session.

Notice there is no shower, no breakfast, no stalling. This is an efficient wake up call in the morning. Ten minutes tops each day. This has become routine. Not the Led Zeppelin part because I sometimes listen to Howard or various stations but you get the idea. I usually get breakfast and get to work a little after 8.

Another record day

Hitting another blog visitor highpoint yesterday with 1,415 daily visits. Attributed to Storage Wars as per usual and I learned an interesting tidbit on how Google operates. Lately, I’ve been creating a post about the new Storage Wars episode as it’s airing. This gives me the first crack at any new searches which amazing happened last night. They had a new character on the episode named Nabila and I made mention of it in my blog post 2 entries ago. I received about 100 visits of people searching for “Nabila Storage Wars” last night. I googled it myself about an hour after it aired and my site was the #1 ranking for that search with no others being relevant. I just did it again today and I’ve dropped to 4 behind A&E (who created a page for her after it aired) and Wikipedia but to see that my site is still up there should give a good indication that being the first site to display content holds some value. Something to also notice is that reputation is another big factor in climbing the searches which should be obvious. I still haven’t figured out how to get people to read my content as the majority tend to bounce but I’m working on that. People like controversy and that is what will get them to stay.

I wrote a post a while back on Lindsay Lohan and why her career is dying. Unless you live under a rock, you’d know she recently posed for Playboy. Some good material of Lindsay Lohan Playboy pics can be found at that link7 . My only problem with them is it’s not like she’s Lindsay Lohan. People want to see Lindsay, not her dressed up like Marilyn Monroe. Killer bod though and great rack. I just feel like this could be any actress and not the cutie from Mean Girls. Nevertheless, I would be surprised if this brought some attention to rnningfool.com which is truly my goal in life.

Jewing the Journal

I don’t let big companies run over me and neither should you. Here’s an example of negotiating for a print subscription to the Wall Street Journal. I want to fore mention that I really like reading the WSJ in the morning while I eat breakfast and it’s one of the few, simple activities that give me enjoyment. This is important in any negotiating process but in this scenario they don’t know how much I like it. I also have to be prepared to cancel the service if they do call my bluff.

I see a charge on my AMEX for 95 bucks (380 yearly) for the WSJ. Since this is an automatic renew, I wasn’t exactly sure what I was even paying for. I looked it up and it was a quarterly charge. I remember negotiating this situation last year and I looked up how much I paid for a yearly subscription previously and it was $290. I also armed myself with the information of what it would cost a new subscriber to join and that price was $256. I called the number on the statement and was put through to “the shell.” The shell is an employee who has no authority and can’t do anything but spit out the company’s standard rates. I explained to him that I wasn’t going to pay the $380 yearly and I wanted the new subscriber rate. He said there was nothing he could do. I threatened with cancelling the account. He obliged being the robot that he was. Considering this wasn’t what I wanted, I got him to transfer me to “the solutions department.” A very nice woman gets on the phone and explains to me that the rate I got previously was a special rate. Her voice was trembling as she was explaining this to me so I knew she didn’t want a confrontation. The next sentence I spoke is paramount to this entire post:

“You’re telling me that your company treats new customers better than loyal customers? Consider this ma’am, I could cancel my account today, re-register my account tomorrow to another address and I would be paying the new subscriber rate of $256.”

There’s no real good argument to that on her side and she offered me the $256 price. So this phone call only saved 124 bucks for the year but it’s the principal that’s important. Most things in life are negotiable and even these minor battles feel like a win for the little guy. Too many time people just bend over and take it and I’m saying that it’s important to make a stand.

Smoke em’ if you find em – Storage Wars 12/13/11

Now we’re talking. This episode was exciting. The addition of Nabila was exactly what the show needed. More competition, more action, more people who know what they’re doing. The idea of watching people who value a unit and then either bid up another person or actually continue bidding higher because they think the unit is valuable is interesting. Nabila getting that last locker for $450 didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me the way all the lockers were being bid up. I even liked Jarrod having the balls to continue bidding all the way up to 3,300 bucks which I believe a less experience Jarrod would have backed down on. The values of his unit were preposterous the way they were adding up 100 dollar bills with that furniture and the old golf clubs I assure you nobody would want, but naturally they hit a gem in the cigarette cases getting completely lucky. For some reason I prefer for them to lose. Barry bidding on the mystery unit was nothing unusual and seeing him lose money was also typical. I sort of liked the feel to this show more than the last few. I can’t really explain why though. I will not be watching the newest episode of the Texas show.

Foster the People vs Led Zeppelin

Just to make sure Mark’s comment doesn’t get buried below I will share this song which I also think is pretty good. This song isn’t on Torches though which was why I’ve never heard it until watching the video. This was the first time I saw Mark Foster before and it sort of surprised me that his voice sounds that way even live. Foster the People sound like a really cool concert to go to even though the audience seems comatose. They rock out towards the end a bit but whenever I see people rocking out I always come back to this song.

If you don’t have the time to listen to the whole song I would suggest skipping to 3:30 to hear some of the best rock and roll of all time. This is why no one can compare to Led Zeppelin. You first hear Foster the People, one of the hottest groups out in 2011, rocking out and then you hear perhaps the greatest rock and roll group of all time putting them to shame. I know this isn’t a fair comparison but I’m just making a point of why rock has never stepped up to where it was back in the late 60’s, early 70’s. I wonder what Robert Plant thinks of these bands in today’s era?

I’m gonna make one final attempt to urge people to join spotify because it really is a cool service. I’ve been listening to my own music for the most part because like usual it’s very difficult to get people to create playlists so the entire community can listen to their music. Basically you share playlists with all your facebook friends but no one interacts but me and a few others. I’ve created lists with songs that I like and I pretty much just listen to them myself. However, I’d be happy for new people to introduce me to new music. A sample spotify:user:129434542:playlist:6jukaHPOTO8eRN5mbNLRqj
