About Tom Stortz

Enjoying my last few responsibility free years left.

Happy Birthday, Bud

I pointed about a million readers to the fact that it’s Bud’s birthday today. I probably only know about a dozen birthday’s by heart and his is one.

I haven’t had time to blog recently and this isn’t going to change moving forward. I’m heading out to Europe on Jan 31st and all blog transmissions will stop until February 10th. Obviously I’ll try to take plenty of pictures and have good stories for upcoming posts.

This post is just letting know what is ongoing so you aren’t wondering why I’m not posting.

Being the Captain

We have a bowling league that started up on Monday that is more official than the Manayunk league at Hi-Spots. You have to pay $10 to become a USBC member for the half year to allow you to play for the money involved. It’s sanctioned which allows the prize pool to take place. Last night was the 2nd week and I have already had a situation come up where the captain has to make a decision.

In Week 1, our entire team came into the league with 120 averages which is normal considering we have yet to bowl in the league. As such, we were all far better than 120 bowlers. This was the week 1 scoreboard.

southbowlscores

When the standings came out, it says we were 3-1. In bowling leagues, you roll 3 games and the 4th game is total pins. All games are handicapped. Now considering we all entered with 120 averages, you can see by the picture that the other team was giving us 67 pins. There is about a 0% chance that we lost a game under these circumstances.

1-bowlingHere is where my moral issue comes in and I’m asking my blog audience what they would do. I can ask the league coordinator to see the scores of the games to see how we lost a game. It is possible that there is a justifiable reason we lost. This could be that they took our averages after we rolled and handicapped the game from there. It’s also possible that the game was so lopsided (which was no fault of our own but completely unfair coming in with a 120 average) that they gave a game to the opposing team because one of their members is the President of the league out of pity. Or I could say I don’t give a shit, it’s one game over the course of the season and it won’t matter in the long run. Plus if the game was handicapped accurately, it would have played out completely different because we would have been giving pins to start. I tend to not think it will make a difference but want to do right by the team. What should I do?

Would you fight for the win?

Pictures From North Korea

Full Set

More From the Same Gallery

“To be fair, when I went I saw nearly everything presented in these pictures. You mainly see this stuff when you are travelling between cities. You pass through many villages that look totally third world and see lots of soldiers hitch hiking and stuff, kids playing in the road, etc. And with the bathroom as a cistern thing, a couple of the hotel rooms I stayed in came with bathtubs full of water that I wasn’t allowed to use as actual bathtubs because they needed the water in them. I also think they’ve started loosening up on the picture taking rules. As I understand it, a few years ago they were a lot more strict about it. My guide didn’t even forbid pictures taken from inside the car, I was told really the only rule regarding photography was that I couldn’t take pictures of soldiers (which still happened anyways since they’re everywhere).”

Wilt Chamberlain is Basketball’s GOAT

wilt_Chamberlain_100-pointI know, I know, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time because he went to the finals 6 times and won every time. Or it’s Bill Russell who won the title 11 times in 13 seasons. Or it’s Kareem Abdul Jabbar who holds the record for most points scored of all time. After watching Wilt’s videos and reviewing his stats, I can’t think of anyone else who deserves the honor.

Who’s Stronger?

Wilt is Legendary

wilt and Kareem Tip Off

Wilt and Kareem Tip Off

The Big Dipper was off the charts. He got the nickname from his friends, who first called him “Dip” or “Dippy” because he had to dip under doorways. The best argument that can be made against Wilt is that his competition wasn’t nearly as fierce. That being said, if Wilt was playing in today’s game, he’d probably score even more than he did in the 60’s. If Kwame Brown can last 10 years in the NBA, let’s double check how good it is today. Let’s break down Wilt.

  • Wilt Knows Volleyball

    Wilt Knows Volleyball

At 7-1, 275lbs, he was a freak of nature. He was an avid track and field athlete: as a youth, he high jumped 6 feet, 6 inches, ran the 440 yards in 49.0 seconds and the 880 yards in 1:58.3, shot put 53 feet, 4 inches, and broad jumped 22 feet. These are insane numbers for a guy that tall.

  • Wilt got his bench press up to 500 pounds. Shaq could only bench about 450, probably less now.
  • He was ranked the #1 volleyball player in the world at one point. He liked volleyball because it helped him pick up chicks.
  • Wilt played every minute of every game some seasons. In the 60’s, the seasons were 80 games with 12 minute quarters which was 3,840 minutes. In one season he played 3,882 minutes.  In 9 seasons he played over 3600+ minutes. Jordan’s most ever was 3,311.
  • When he was 25, he averaged 50.4 points per game.
  • Wilt_Chamberlain3

Was a Globetrotter before playing for the Philadelphia Warriors

Wilt holds the record with 55 rebounds in 1 game AGAINST BILL RUSSELL.

  • He averaged over 20 rebounds a game for 12 straight seasons and dipped to 18+ for his final 4 years.
  • Only player in NBA history to record a double – triple – double. On February 2, 1968 against the Detroit Pistons, he logged 22 points, 25 rebounds and 21 assists.
  • He also won seven scoring, nine field goal percentage, and 11 rebounding titles in addition to an assist title.
  • Wilt slept with 20,000 women (according to him). If Wilt started at the age of 15, from then up to the age of 55 (when the book was published) he would have had 40 years to sleep with 20,000 women, or 500 different women a year-easy math. That works out to roughly 1.4 women a day

Notable Quotes on Wilt

wilt-chamberlain-51894775“Everybody pulls for David, nobody roots for Goliath.” – Wilt Chamberlain

“Wilt was on of the greatest ever, and we will never see another one like him.” – Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

“One-on-one he [Wilt] would’ve murdered Russell and everyone.  But playing five-on-five, Wilt was consigned to a specific role because of his ability to score so easily, whereas the Celtics fit Russell into their team concept better.” -Red Holzman,  A View form the Bench, p. 78

“Once Wilt got upset with me and dunked the ball so hard it went through the rim with such force that it broke my toe as it hit the floor.” -Johnny Kerr, Tall Tales (by Terry Pluto)  p. 237

Guns Guns Guns

012016-NICS-checksThe gun control post was a hit so I bring you to another fascinating tidbit on guns. The FBI says too many background checks are being called for due to gun purchases and they are overwhelmed and need more staff. A record 3.3 million guns were purchased in December. This compares to 1.5 million in the month of June. The increase is because gun enthusiasts are concerned that stricter regulations will be implemented.  The increase has lead to a delay in processing such checks.

160120085727-11-pakistan-attack-0120-exlarge-169In other news, militants stormed a school in Pakistan and 22 students are dead at Bacha Khan University. The militants were armed with AK-47’s. Attacks like this are the reason people purchase PA-10 rifles and other guns.  “One Pakistani Taliban spokesman, Umar Mansoor, said the attack was in retaliation for military operations against the group. Mansoor was also the mastermind behind the December 2014 attack,Pakistan’s DawnNews reported. Another Taliban spokesman said we “strongly condemn the attack on Bacha Khan University in Charsadda and disown the attack, saying this is not according to Shariah,” Khurrassani said.

defense budgetWell, which is it? I’d love to say that this doesn’t happen in our neck of the woods but that’s not true. You’re basically fucked if you don’t have a gun because of groups like this which brings the mindset, I need a gun. This behavior is why humans will eventually blow each other up. The idea that I need to be armed because your armed brings 3.3 million purchases of weapons in December.

Look at how much money the US spends on defense – $581 billion dollars. As a % of GDP it’s not that bad but holy shit that’s a vast difference from the rest of the world. The US mindset is on defense both nationally and individually. Better to be armed than be sorry. It’s hard to say if I feel safe or not.

Pats and Broncos Breakdown 2016

Outsiders have been sending me info so I present it to you with objective intentions…to start.

Evidence 1:
Adam alerted me that Denver is 7-0 in the last 7 games when Ed Hochuli refs. Their record ATS is 4-1-2.

10/22/2000: Denver beats SD 21-7, line Den -4.5 Denver Home
9/14/2008: Denver beats SD 39-38, line Den -1. Denver Away
9/27/2009: Denver beats Oakland 23-3, line Denver -2.5 Denver Away
9/18/2011: Denver beats Cincy 24-22, line Denver -3. Denver Home
12/30/2012: Denver beats KC 38-3, line Denver -17. Denver Home
12/22/2013: Denver beats Houston 37-13, line Denver -9.5, Denver Away
12/28/2015: Denver beats Cincy 20-17, line Denver -3, Denver Home

Rob Kelley sent me this little tidbit.
PJvw13D

The Line is currently Pats -3.5 (-105)

First things first, I haven’t been that great during the playoffs this year. I’m 3-3 for a profit of +55 (this is negated by a $-250 bet on Alabama). I didn’t bet the Minnesota game because I didn’t wake up in time and didn’t bet the Steelers because I was sick from the Seattle game. That being said, I’m giving this game a hard look. Here is what I’m considering.

  • Brandon+Marshall+Rob+Gronkowski+LjBjAjAr0qomColin Cowherd said Peyton is throwing wounded ducks and the Pats will destroy his inability to throw the ball with any velocity.
  • Gronk looked unstoppable against the Chiefs. Bronco’s linebacker Brandon Marshall said this, “I say because he pushes off,” Marshall told NBC Sports’ “Pro Football Talk Live” radio show. “I mean, he pushes off, and he gets away with it about 98 percent of the time.”
  • CJ Anderson is running like the first round fantasy pick he was this year.
  • The Broncos got real lucky to beat a depleted Pittsburgh team with a late game fumble from Toussaint.
  • I can’t imagine the NFL wants Brady to win this game. Then again, him going to the Super Bowl is a network’s dream.
  • Brock Osweiler beat the Patriots 30-24 in Week 12.

hi-res-12be426b977845ede3b66bb0fcbe4004_crop_northWhere’s My Action? – The Hochuli stats mean little to me because Peyton hasn’t been the QB for all those years. I tend to agree more with Cowherd and Peyton’s problem getting the ball downfield. I’m a bit surprised he’s gotten this far with his noodle arm but it’s a team game and his D keep the Broncos in games so he only has to do so little. Let’s be honest though, that line is highly aware of what is going on. The Broncos are playing a HOME game and are dogs by 3.5. Home dogs are generally a good bet (Wins – Bengals, Vikings… Loss – Texans). I thought the Chiefs were a good team and their D stacked up but the offense was no where to be found. This is the reverse of a Broncos team who squeaked by a damaged Steelers team. I’m leaning towards the Pats -3.5 with a major inkling to buy the half point.

Fight the Right to Bear Arms

The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms and was adopted on December 15, 1791, as part of the first ten amendments contained in the Bill of Rights.

I did some research on this amendment so I didn’t sound like a complete idiot on this point but I’m far from an expert. My understanding is that this law gives the military the right to do whatever it wants and individuals are allowed to carry hand guns after passing a background check. Assault rifles and bigger weapons require different permits.

The idea behind the 2nd amendment in 1791 was to:

  • 1791guns

    Guns in 1791

    Deter tyrannical gov’t

  • Repel invasion
  • Facilitating a natural right of self-defense

Are Guns a Problem?

A recent study found that, after Missouri repealed its background check law, the murder rate spiked by 16 percent; the researchers tracked many of the killings back to newly purchased guns. Conservative writer Robert VerBruggen double-checked the data, and concluded that “the state’s murder rate indeed soared the year after a gun law changed, and there’s no other obvious explanation.”

Deaths per 100,000 people

Deaths per 100,000 people

The United States ranks 12th in firearm deaths by country. The countries above the US are mostly South American and I can only imagine the Government’s involvement with regard to firearms. Let’s not jump to ridiculous conclusions because 10 people out of 100,000 is fairly insignificant. On the flip side, 30,000+ people dying each year by a fire arm sounds a bit higher when considering 318,000,000+ people live in the US. Another note should be that out of that 10, 6.7 are suicide related.

If you’ve been following the news, Texas now allows an open carry rule which allows it citizens to walk around with exposed guns. In Texas, no one blinks an eye. I for one would not be comfortable in this type of environment. My stance on guns is pretty easy to understand, I don’t care if you have them, I just don’t want to know about it.

Why Does An Individual Need To Carry Around a Weapon?

img-pointed-gunPeople who carry weapons use the thinking that if I ever get into a situation where I’m threatened by another person with a weapon, I want to be able to defend myself. People specifically go to shooting ranges to enhance their skills for these potential spots. If you’ve never used a gun before, and someone is pointing a gun at you, you are pretty much dead. If you own a gun and someone is pointing one at you, the idea is that you can fight back. This takes us to the 2nd amendment, you have the right to bear arms. If certain people are restricted from carrying weapons, and certain others are allowed to, you have an unbalanced situation. If everyone has the right to, we live like we do currently.

Some Poor Gun Control Examples

1791 was a different time period. If someone fired a gun at you and missed, I think you’d have about a hour to run away before the person was able to reload. A 9mm can hold anywhere between 8-15 bullets depending on the model. Assault rifles can fire 30 rounds per magazine. Let’s look at how damage occurs in certain scenarios.

MTE4MDAzNDEwMzI0OTE1NzI2Seung Hui Cho Virgina Tech Shooting – 32 killed, 17 wounded
Used a Walther P22 and Glock 19 – had 19, 10 & 15 round magazines which totaled over 400 rounds of ammunition
Committed suicide at the end of attack. Had severe anxiety disorder.

Sandy Hill Killer

Adam LanzaSandy Hook Elementary School Shooting – 27 killed, 2 injured
.22-caliber Savage MK II-F bolt action rifle, Bushmaster XM15-E2S rifle, Glock 20SF
154 rifle shots, 2 glock shots (one to kill himself)
Had sensory-integration disorder

James_Holmes,_croppedJames Holmes  – 2012 Aurora Colorado Attack –  12 people killed, 70 injured
76 total shots fired – six from the shotgun, 65 from the semi-automatic rifle, and five from the .40-caliber handgun
Plead insanity. Has attempted suicide multiple times while being imprisoned.

Anders-Behring-Breivik_Aiming_GunAnders Behring Breivik – 2011 Norway Attack – 68 killed, 110 injured
Used a Ruger Mini 14 rifle
Avg age of those killed, 20, trained marksman.
Sane with paranoid schizophrenia.

california-shootersSyed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik – 2015 San Bernardino Attack – 14 killed , 22 injured
65-75 bullets fired from Semi Automatic Pistols and Rifles

Isil – Bataclan Theatre Massacre – 89 killed
3 men – AKM Assault Rifles

Is There a Point?

ducks in the pondI don’t know. Guns in the wrong hands is problematic any way you look at it. Of course there should be background checks but even this can be bypassed by purchasing a weapon illegally. Millions of individuals like guns for defense, hunting, and a general level of awesomeness. The only time guns come into my life is when I read about people being killed with them. If someone stormed my house and wanted to rob me, I’d be dead. If the Apocalypse came and the Walking Dead surfaced, I’d be dead. If aliens attacked our planet armed with anything other than a sling shot, I’d be dead. There are many arguments to owning a weapon, I for one, will continue to go unprepared. Please don’t read my blog and take advantage of this point.

Wayne Gretzky is Hockey’s GOAT

Wayne Gretzky is hockey’s Greatest of All Time. When you are picking an athlete to be the absolute #1 best player of the history of the sport, it will lead to some difference in opinions. I intend to move this type of post to each sport but I wanted to start with the unmistakable greatest hockey player ever, Wayne Gretzky.

Hockey – Wayne Gretzky

waynegretzkystanleycup

Wayne Gretzky winning the Stanley Cup with the Edmonton Oilers

Analyzing Gretzky’s hockey skills, he says, “What we take to be creative genius is in fact a reaction to a situation that he has stored in his brain as deeply and firmly as his own phone number.” Gzowski presented this theory to Gretzky, and he fully agreed. “Absolutely,” Gretzky said. “That’s a hundred percent right. It’s all practice. I got it from my Dad. Nine out of ten people think it’s instinct, and it isn’t. Nobody would ever say a doctor had learned his profession by instinct; yet in my own way I’ve put in almost as much time studying hockey as a medical student puts in studying medicine.

Wayne-Gretzky-1The Great One’s career started at the ripe age of 19 and lasted all the way to 38. In his rookie year he totaled 137 points (goals and assists) and tied for the league lead. Not being a huge hockey fan this number meant little to me. Upon further research, his stats are out of this universe.

5908485599_2fcb655c09

Wayne Gretzky Fan Club

  • He won the scoring title 7 years in a row and his margin over the second place person was 29, 65, 72, 79, 73, 74, and 75. Mario Lemieux dethroned him for 2 years in a row in ’87 through ’89. Gretzky then won the next 2. Mario won 2. Gretzky won his final scoring title in 93-94.
  • Wayne Gretzky has scored 891 goals. Gordie Howe is second with 801 and Brett Hull is 3rd with 741.
  • Gretzky has 1,963 assists.  The second place person, Ron Francis, has 1,249.
  • Gretzky has 2,857 points. This is 970 points ahead of 2nd place Mark Messier.
  • Gretzky holds the record for 92 goals in a season.
  • He has the top 7 spots for most assists in a season. His 163 assists is untouchable.
  • He’s 18th in amount of games played. His 1,487 is 280 less than Gordie Howe’s 1,767 which is the all-time most. These make his feats more remarkable.
  • Paulina Gretzky

    Daughter Paulina Gretzky

He won 4 Stanley Cups, all with Edmonton between ’84-’88.

  • He played in 18 All Star Games.
  • He lead the league in assists 16 times and goals 5 times.
  • His greatest accomplishment is creating Paulina who married PGA Pro Dustin Johnson.

In 1980, when an exercise physiologist tested the recuperative abilities of all of the Edmonton Oilers, Gretzky scored so high the tester said that he “thought the machine had broken.” His stamina is also indicated by the fact that Gretzky often scored late in the game. In the year he scored his record 92 goals, 22 of them went in the net during the first period, 30 in the second—and 40 in the third.

Sam and Evan Chug Off Round 2

Round 1 ended with cider coming out of Evan’s nose. Yes you read that correctly, cider.

Adam said Sam was a -320 favorite and I said it was closer to -550. Chugging is one of these contests where you’re either good, or you aren’t so I don’t expect a lot of variance.

A 45 second discussion on the how it was going to start.

6 “So Hot Right Now” Female Celebs – Part 2

I came across these Katy Perry Golden Globes pictures and it moved me enough to create this type of post again. Part 1 of “So Hot Right Now” generates some of my best blog traffic so I may as well go back to what works. I also noticed I tended to pic girls who were older than the 21, Selena Gomez crowd which shows my affection for women my age.

6. Natalie Dormer

The picture comparing Natalie Dormer with Lola Bunny is classic.  The top comment from that picture is, “childhood boner meet adult boner”. Natalie also knocks it out of the park with her role as Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones. Awaiting her to get naked is always worth it. Her piercing eyes are what set her apart from others.  The shaved head look isn’t bad either and I was surprised to see she was 33.

5. Lindsay Czarniak

This might only be me but I love listening to Lindsay report. She was a bit older than I thought at 38 but looks youthful. I’m attracted to her because not only is she good looking, but she has earned the respect of guys like Kornheiser and Wilbon. She does a good job in the difficult sports arena run by chauvinistic men.

4. Scarlett Johansson

She fills out the pictures if you catch my drift. She’s 10/10 body for me and an 8 face. The only movies that I can remember that I’ve seen her in are The Prestige (she looked great), Her (just her voice) and Don Jon (where I though she sucked and the movie sucked too as a whole so it may not have been entirely her fault). Looks fabulous for 31. The swimsuit pic is one of my all-time favorites.

3. Taylor Swift

This is actually not the look I go for but am including it for the sake of presenting a different body than the huge boobed girls I usually trend to. She’s tall, rail thin, and has an elegant look to her face. I know she got a boob job whether she admits it or not. There is also a sexiness factor to females who can sing and dance. As much as she doesn’t fit my bill, I understand how others love her.

SPi4Y72

2. Katy Perry

I’ve had her countless times in my post so I’m really only using her to show her Golden Globes dress which wasn’t quite as high up as the green Grammy dress but still not bad. She seems to be staying out of the headlines or maybe she’s just not finding the ones I’m searching for. Not having her #1 is a change for me but these times are a changin.

1. Sara Jean Underwood

She’s a strong case for hottest woman on the planet. Perfect proportions. Her boobs are big but not too big. Her body is tight and her pictures on Instagram knock it out of the park every time. Only 2.4 million Instagram followers so I’m not alone in this hot take. I’m a strong proponent of her naked yoga (100% NSFW) if you’ve never see it. Perfect 10.
