Philly Hot Chocolate 15k

By |2014-04-06T20:41:37-04:00April 6th, 2014|Running|0 Comments

Phila Hot Chocolate 15kI participated in the Philadelphia Hot Chocolate 15k this Sunday.   This was an odd race for me because I had not been able to run properly for the last 11 days.  Two Tuesday’s ago I took a shot to my ribs in basketball that left me unable to train, or for that matter run at all.  A few days prior to injury, I had run a nice non-stop 9 mile run and was pretty hyped for a good performance at this race.  I was sidelined for all of last week and starting this Wednesday I was able to at least run a bit.  On Friday I put in 3 miles on the treadmill about a minute slower than race pace and was able to do it relatively pain free.  3 is not 9.

I spent the weekend completely sober and even the 7 days before that so I was in good health and spirits even with the injury.  I woke up at 5:30 on Sunday to get ready for the race.  I deuced and showered, tightly tied my race shoes, attached my bib, and ate a chocolate chip granola bar to prepare.  I hailed a cab and met up with Chad, Nikkii, Evan and Lisa at the Art Museum steps.  It was way colder than I would have liked.  We met up with Jenn and Jon to expand the crew.  Here is a pre-race shoe shot which looks neat.

Which is mine?

Which is mine?

Hot Chocolate Run SelfieI hadn’t been checking my phone but we luckily met up with Laura as well.  Evan and Chad were doing the 5k which started 45 minutes before the 15k.  I saw them start and was highly anticipating the results.  I wanted to see them finish but it was cutting it a little close as I had to get to my corral for my race.  I could tell from the people and how they were dressed that it wasn’t going to be the most competitive race but for my physical state, that was fine.  The weather was warming up too which made things all the merrier.

The race went off and I was in the back of the corral.  I started and wasn’t pushing the pace and felt pretty good. I knew I had a chip time cushion and hit the 2 mile mark at close to 12 which is where I want to be.  If I could sustain 6 minute miles, I’d be happy.  I was gaining on people who went out too hard and started running with this tiny kid who after seeing the results was only 15.  He took me through 5 and then started picking it up, or better put, not fading.  I was still feeling pretty good at the 10k mark and a weird thing I do is break everything down to percentages.  At 10k, I only have 33% of the race, or merely a 5k and that kept me going.  I was making some spurts of energy but all was not well with the endurance.  Mile 7 and 8 went down but not without a fight.  I was out of steam for the final .3 and had no kick whatsoever.  I finished in 8th place with a time of 56:29.  I was happy.

photoAfter the run we went to Brick (s) and had some brunch.  They offered a $20 bottomless drink special and I think I drank about 8 mimosa’s.  Ck4 even did a Coors Light – Amaretto bomb which was a rarity.  I ate a decent omelet and there were some breakfast burrito’s that looked big.  The service was good and it was a nice spot to check out after a race.  Evan had some people over after but I was all mucked up from the run and went home.  I showered and dressed to go back over but wasn’t feeling great.  I laid down for one minute and fell asleep.  I woke up 2 hours later and watched an episode of the Wire which brings me right here right now.

This chocolate fondue was giving to finishers.

This chocolate fondue was giving to finishers.

A fun day and mostly sober weekend which is also a rarity.  Good job to everyone who participated because the more people who do it, the more fun it is.   I also will add that the race was was well run and an ideal size.  The course wasn’t the most creative (out and back on West River) but the weather was magnificent for a run.  I will probably add some pictures to this post as they become available.

Wildly Know

By |2014-04-04T14:21:00-04:00April 4th, 2014|My Brain|0 Comments

I’m glad this got some discussion because I hemmed and hawed over it for a good few minutes. To get people up to speed, this is @MarkMustache’s tweet:

[dropcap background=”yes” color=”#333333″]It is wildly know that the interestingness of an animal is proportional to how difficult it is to figure out where its butthole is[/dropcap]

Sam’s Comment – Also, Wildly was absolutely meant to be widely, and Mark did not do that on purpose. He is the worst speller I’ve ever met.

JKash’s Comment – Sam – Is it considered a spelling error if a completely different word was chosen? I’d suggest that it’s more an issue of word choice (which is a bizarre word choice). “Know” seems like a spelling error as the last letter appears to be omitted.

My Evaluation

When I read this tweet I was flabbergasted by the how interesting an animal was depended on it’s butthole because I never thought of that before.  Does that mean a snake is the most interesting?  That point aside, I pondered Mark’s use of wildly know and was going to tweet him and ask him if he meant widely known which would seemingly make more sense.  However, I thought about it a bit and think that wildly know is a phrase that can be used by people who spend much time outdoors.

Not being one myself, I don’t know much about the wild.  For a person to question the location of an animal’s butthole however, perhaps he knows a bit more than I do about wildly know.  We are all familiar with the term know-how and this term just uses that in a wildly way.  I honestly think it makes sense and even if he accidentally did it, it works.   I’m going to back Mark on this usage and admit he knows more than I do about the laws of the land.  Should we be asking do all the animals of the wild know that the most fascinating creatures have the most obscure butthole locations?   It’s wildly know.  Mark, can we get some clarification?

I Threw a Rock at a Police Car

By |2014-04-04T07:45:44-04:00April 4th, 2014|My Brain|0 Comments

The Plan

I was driving and I saw a police car sitting in a parking lot unattended.  An idea popped into my mind of hurling a rock through its windshield.  If you’re curious why this was my first instinct, you’ll have to take it up with the therapist I don’t have.  My brain started thinking of how it would actually happen and this is what I came up with:

cracked-windshield-repair1) Park the car on the side of the street – witnesses a plenty

2) Find a big rock – I assume this wouldn’t be that hard but most likely would foil the plan

3) Hurl aforementioned rock at front windshield

4) Escape in car

Further Thought

Seems simple enough.  Then I started thinking that if I was really serious about performing such an act, I probably should have covered my license plate and wore a mask at least until I got about a mile or two away from the scene.   If my car did happen to be caught on camera, I wouldn’t want to get caught once the policemen returned and called in this incident.  If it wasn’t caught on tape, I think you’d get away scot-free.

police_inspectionFor the fun of it, let’s say my act was spotted by a witness and they informed the officer that I was driving a gray Acura but did not get the license plate.  Now there is an alert out for anyone driving a gray Acura.  Assume this is a big ordeal in the police universe and they set up a perimeter and stopped me with no real evidence against me.  Could they catch me by questioning me and monitoring how I behaved?

I know that was a long winded scenario but I think the question posed is interesting.  I obviously know I did it when I’m stopped but can’t lead on in anyway.  Now if I knew nothing, I’d act just like I knew nothing and there would be no acting.  Sounds simple except since I know I did it, will I still act the same way as the truth acting I wrote about in the last sentence?  I’m not so sure.

go-to-jailIf I didn’t do it and then I start trying to duplicate those answers while knowing I did do it, the task got one step more complicated.  The more complicated things are, the better chance they fail.  For some reason there is some unexplained paranoia that I wouldn’t be able to act the same way in both situations.  Something would slip.  Being thoughtful and smart for yourself in this instance is doing the opposite of how you want to act (telling the truth that you did it) and this will be a focal point in my next post.  I’m setting up that post with this one.  Pretty advanced I know.  By the way, I didn’t follow through on my plan.

How Not To Get Twitter Followers

By |2014-04-03T20:10:24-04:00April 3rd, 2014|My Brain|2 Comments

twitter-popularThis is going to sound shallow but a sense of popularity can be determined by how many followers you have.  It must be understood that the word popularity actually means reach in the e-world.  The more followers you have, the bigger the reach, and thus the more impact you make.  Many people will say they don’t care about such a thing, but many people also don’t have many followers.

I try hard to gain followers through Twitter.  It’s not my #1 priority in life, but I’ll make a conscious effort if I find something humorous or witty to share it with whoever it pertains to.  Twitter followers don’t happen naturally.  You have to work for them and from my experience, getting re-tweets, not favorites, is key.  Here are some examples of failed efforts.

Wawa actually favorited this tweet.  With 31k followers, you would think this would get me 1, it didn’t.

SomeKindaWonderful Tweet

If you follow the blog, you know I’ve been pumping the song Reverse by SomeKindaWonderful.  This tweet got 2 re-tweets and 4 favorites and resulted in 0 followers.  Song of the Year is probably an exaggeration.

 WIP Host Tweet

Brian Haddad is the late night WIP host from 10pm to 2am.   I decided to send this comment and he actually read it on the air at around midnight.  This resulted in 1 follower which was a huge boost.

Facebook Alt 18 Comment

Here is one more Facebook interaction that was the Alt18 (top 18 Alt songs of the week) that developed into nothing.

What To Do?

I don’t know.  I’ve been working for nothing for so long that being unable to get followers seems to come with the territory of being a nerdy blogger.  Either way I’m going to keep on trying and we’ll see what happens.  It’d be nice if this blog could produce but the analytics are so misleading that even though 600+ people come to the site a day, the last video I posted had 12 views!  It pretty much shows no one reads or watches anything.

Mark looking for butthole.

There is one thing on Twitter though that I must share because it was probably the funniest tweet I’ve read in a long time.  Sam’s friend Mark tweeted this (I can’t embed the Tweet for some unknown reason) “It is wildly know that the interestingness of an animal is proportional to how difficult it is to figure out where its butthole is“.

Where to begin?  First off, wildly know is so similar to widely known that I wasn’t exactly sure if this was on purpose.  Wildly know though is pretty fucking funny.  Next, interestingness isn’t a word.  That’s funny.  Finally, how fascinating an animal is depends on how concealed its butthole is?  This floored me.  Is this really that much a mystery?  What types of animals is he referring to?  Your guess is as good as mine but A+ tweet from MarkMustache.

Slapping Hands For Mediocrity

By |2014-04-01T17:40:15-04:00April 1st, 2014|Sports|0 Comments

I know I’m a dick.  Society has gotten to be such wusses that most people with any competitive spirits are also dicks.  I live by a certain set of beliefs that has been molded throughout my life experiences.    Below you will find a video of something that I would never stand for.

If you watch the video and can’t tell what I’m referring to, than you probably didn’t see that double high five given for missing a spare that should have been gotten.  A high five is basically saying you didn’t do that great and we’re all OK with that.  It’s celebrating mediocrity.   It reminds me of Meet the Fockers when Greg says, “Most people aren’t proud of sixth place ribbons.”  This goes the same for when people miss foul shots at the free throw line.  You shouldn’t get high fives for missing something you are supposed to make.  Fuck encouragement.  Results count in competition.

Miserable Days

By |2014-04-01T10:54:53-04:00April 1st, 2014|My Life|0 Comments

miserable-3What I claimed was a solar plexus injury is actually a rib injury. I haven’t been able to do anything but walk and sit the last week and life is borderline awful. I hate not being able to work out and I’m still not recovered. I can’t sleep on my side and even trying a slow jog still hurts. Deep breaths are not happening either. All in all this injury has been a nightmare.

This is why sports teams don’t want players in their 30’s. Now in no way am I an athlete but it’s a constant battle staying healthy. I have these races coming up that I train for and as I’m getting into good shape, I get hurt. It completely curtails training and then I can’t achieve the results I expect out of myself. I haven’t been able to do anything active for a full week and that kills any longer runs I put in the week previously. Back to square 1. This is a clear vent post but as I’ve said many times in this blog, being injured is a horrible thing that can happen to a human.

Top Alt Music 3/29/14

By |2014-03-29T13:29:43-04:00March 29th, 2014|Music|0 Comments

I try to remind people to follow my AltNation playlist on Spotify because I always keep it updated and it has the newest / best songs available.  The songs that have been released in the last few weeks are top notch.  Since I know people read the blog but don’t use Spotify, I’ll give a taste through this post.

SomeKindaWonderful – Reverse
With 10,000 views only yesterday, this song is going to pop. I think it’s awesome.

Prides – The Seeds You Sow
Been on the alternativeaddiction countdown as the #1 song for weeks now.

Black Keys – Fever
2 million views in 5 days, yeah I’d say that’s pretty good.

Better Than Ezra – Crazy Lucky
6k views after 5 days, this will rise once people know about it.

Waters – Got To My Head
Only 10,000 views but the song has a laid back feel to it.
