Jimmy Connors 30 on 30 – This is What They Want

jimmy_connors

Airing at 8pm tonight, 10/29/13, was a tremendous, hour long production of the improbable Jimmy Connors US Open run of 1991. The run itself is entertaining but his attitude towards competing is what sets this type of story apart. Hearing Chuck Klosterman give his insight on Connor’s mindset is equally intriguing because he’s the only commentator that tries to dig into the real Jimmy. The program is only an hour long and if you ever have the time to watch it, I suggest you do even if you don’t like tennis to learn about a true competitor.

During his career he won eight Grand Slam singles titles and two Grand Slam doubles titles, and was a runner-up in seven Grand Slam singles finals, one Grand Slam doubles final and one Grand Slam mixed doubles final. He held the top ranking for a then-record 160 consecutive weeks from July 29, 1974 to August 22, 1977 and an additional eight times during his career for a total of 268 weeks. Notice the dates of his prime are late 70’s to mid 80’s. In 1991, Connor’s was 38 years old and recovering from wrist surgery. He decided to give the US Open one more shot and that tale is what the 30 on 30 documented. I won’t rehash all of the events but let’s just say it’s captivating. The video below demonstrates a point Connors had in the 4th round against Paul Haarhuis.

Notice the crowd reaction to the point. Jimmy was able to work the crowd like nobody else in tennis, ever. He made you feel like he needed you to win. He used everything he could to in his power to help him win. Whether it be stalling, arguing with the line judge, or pumping up the crowd, he knew what it took to obtain victory. His attitude in interviews is remarkable too because he basically says if you don’t like it, so what. His actions were authentic even though everything he did seemed staged. You don’t see this type of attitude out of players today like Nadal and Djokavic. Jimmy brought a one of a kind personality to tennis and it shows an incredibly powerful tool that most athletes or competitors don’t utilize today and that’s the ultimate desire to win with a fuck you attitude.

Calvin Johnson vs Brandon Carr

Calvin Johnson - Brandon Carr

Here are a few interesting quips.

Calvin Johnson vs Brandon Carr
Megatron finished with 14 catches and 329 yards on Sunday which was 7 yards behind the record. It was Brandon Carr’s job to cover Calvin Johnson. “We were confident in the gameplan,” Carr said. “I tried to go out there and battle like I said I would. Just got to lick my wounds so to speak and get ready for next week cause I’ll be back.” “That’s what he does; that’s what Dez (Bryant) does,” Carr said. “Those types of players have a knack for getting the ball and can jump out of the gym. His quarterback had a lot of confidence in him, hung the ball up to him and he came down with the catch. “It was challenging. Like I said, we never had an answer for him. That’s the guy they kept feeding and we just didn’t adjust quick enough to take him out of the game. They rode him all the way to victory. “I battled with him,” Carr said of Johnson. “He made some plays. It was a big task and I knew that heading into the game, but I wasn’t going to shy away from it. If I could do it all over again, I wouldn’t shy away from it again.”

Is Brandon Carr to blame for this monstrous game had by Calvin? Of course not. He’s 6 ft tall going up against a mammoth man at 6-5. Not only is he physically superior but he’s more talented in his football abilities. His speed, his jumping, his hand eye, his route running, and the idea that the offense knows where the ball is going makes this an unfair match. Still, how do the Cowboys let him go for 329? It’s one thing when a WR gets you for 100 yards it becomes a thought to double team him. When he hits 200 it’s apparent you are up against extreme talent or you need to change something to focus on this player. At 300 you aren’t understanding what is going on. Ryan Broyles isn’t going to beat you here. Brandon Pettigrew and Joseph Fauria can run 10 yards after the catch. But to let Calvin Johnson go for 329 is unheard of. I wanted to make this about Brandon Carr and how he failed but this one rides solely on the Dallas coaching staff. I bet Dez was desmerized by Calvin’s performance.

Time Traveling

Thinking Art

With my birthday looming, I took a look back at past blog entries to get an idea of my evolution. I have created over 1,500 entries since inception which gives me a lot of material to sift through. I chose November 2010 and after reading a few dozen entries, my conclusion was that the blog was somewhat decent but miles away from where it is currently. The thoughts that were being produced were of someone who was going through the motions. This isn’t to say that I’m not still going through the motions, the difference is that now I know I’m going through the motions. What I mean is that my entries were exact replicas week after week. Basketball game. Drunk weekend. Random thoughts. I wasn’t striving for anything other than surviving which I honestly didn’t even do that well at. Which brings me to the obvious question, what’s different now?

My first answer is that I’m capable. I have more experience and can adapt to most situations. I’ve acquired life skills in talking to other human beings and understand how to communicate effectively and cut through the chit chat. I’ve learned to set things that I want to accomplish and then how to accomplish them. I’m scheduling a trip to Germany in February and have little anxiety around it because I’m comfortable in what I’m trying to do and how to do it. In those 2010 years I was just a dude who had good intentions but no direction. I see things differently now. I used to look at everything through a magnifying glass and now I see it through a telescope. Taking a big picture viewpoint will help put things in perspective. If you’re nervous about something going on in your life, consider that you are a speck and nothing that you do will matter significantly in the grand scheme of things. I used to dislike cold calling prospective customers until I realized that whatever transpires in that phone call most likely won’t mean a hill of beans to the guy on the other end. There are rarely events in life other than death that require stressing about.

I’ve improved on being me. I know what I want in life and have a rough outline on how to get there. It’s impossible to get through life without the help of other people. I try to treat everyone else in my life as I would want to be treated. I’ve done my best to eliminate the riff raff and am looking to consistently “make things happen”. I’ve spent the years reading and learning and now it’s time for doing. You can always learn but doing is something that separates the good from the best. I intend to make my 30’s better than my 20’s and can’t think of any reason why that shouldn’t be the case. I’ve matured at my own pace and have been going through life the way I planned it. This blog is a great resource on that adventure and it amazes me more people don’t document their life.

The Armpit of Virginia – Richmond Trip Report

I was always under the impression the city of Richmond was wonderfully well kept. I suppose this was because the University of Richmond was an expensive college and Virginia is home of lots of cash. This was not the case. At one stop on my trip a dealer referred to Richmond as the title of this post, he added, “well, maybe Petersburg”.

City of Richmond

The National Slate Association held it’s annual meeting in Richmond, Va which consisted of a tour of a quarry, a beautiful mansion with slate roofs, and a few other destinations. It was held on 10/24-10/25 and because we sell slate tools and are members, it is a good opportunity for networking. I woke up early on Wednesday and hit 95 with a car full of tool samples and notes for the trip. I got to Baltimore at about 8am and hit my normal distributors. I spent the day traveling South and wound up in Richmond in the afternoon. I checked into the Doubletree (where they give you a delicious chocolate chip cookie upon arrival) and I went for my usual run around an unfamiliar city to get acclimated. Richmond is home of VCU which is found within striking distance of Downtown. I started walking around a bit after the run to see capitol building and a few other landmarks but was somewhat unimpressed. There wasn’t much action downtown and Broad St is pretty dicey. Certainly not the clean atmosphere I was expecting.

I woke early on Thursday and saw a couple more distributors before meeting with the slate association. We piled into a few vans and took off to view some historic slate roofs. Without going into every detail I’ll hit the cool spots. Here is picture of Dover Hall which is a 38,000 square foot mansion which blew me away. Every room is immaculate and the amount of rooms is incredible. Click on each picture for a closer look.

The day completed back at the hotel and we had a few drinks at the bar and I was pretty beat from the day. I fell asleep during the baseball game and woke up at 6am because I had another stop scheduled for my trip. I did 30 minutes on the elliptical because I still can’t run properly and it’s starting to bother me. I’m eating more and working out less and it’s not a good look. I headed down to Petersburg to visit a nice customer and they showed me around their facility which was awesome. I then drove to the slate quarry where we spent the day going over the various processes of extracting slate from the ground and getting it ready for sale. Next we headed to someone’s “farm” which was 1,500 acres of land near Charlottesville, which is bumblefuck VA. It was unbelievable though because he had his own lake and tons of land for hunting. These guys are big into hunting game and their back yard is as far as they have to travel to partake. They even had a pet deer which I’ve never seen before.

This little guy was friendly.

This little guy was friendly.

The entire association had dinner and shared drinks before the night came to an end. The night sky at this farm was crystal clear that it makes you appreciate getting out of the city for a while. It’s a foreign idea thinking of living out in the country compared to city life. There is nothing around these guys and you have all the land to yourself without anyone stopping you from doing anything. Truly awesome.

I drove back from Richmond at 8pm to arrive back in Philly at 12:30. I was beat from the day but the trip was great because I made a lot of worthwhile contacts who get to know you and want to do business with you because they like you. You can’t spend time any better and I’m extremely fortunate to be in this position that allows me to travel and make decisions for the company. I couldn’t ask for anything more.

Scared of Automatic

The idea of automatic should scare the bejeezus out of you. When something is automatic, it is being done for you. This is supposed to be simpler and safer because a machine or computer will do a better job than a human being. This works well with auto-pilot, an automatic car, and automatic weapons. There are many things though that I don’t want to be automatic because I trust myself more than the machine.

Automatic Headlights
headlights

I don’t believe in the auto function headlights. I will turn them off/on every time instead of using the auto function which I believe turns them on and off for you when it deems appropriate. Why do I feel this way? #1, if the car is on, the headlights should always be on. I don’t care if it’s bright as the sun, the headlights are on in case of tunnels or other dark areas. I don’t know if the auto function believes in this philosophy. #2, if the machine malfunctions and my battery dies, I would be pissed. When I was 16 I left my lights on one time and pulled my mom from work to jump me. She wasn’t happy. Since that day I’ve never left my lights on and would never trust a machine over myself.

Automatic Driving
google-self-driving-car-3.png.492x0_q85_crop-smart

I know this is futuristic (maybe not that much) but I don’t like the idea of a car driving me places. I told this to Evan and he said that there would probably be a manual override function in case something went wrong but the whole idea perturbs me. Let’s just say the machine malfunctions and I go careening off the side of the road because I was reading a book in the back seat. I don’t know about you but I’m not going out that way. The concept that the car will drive you is something that should never happen. It’s one thing for a plane to pilot itself because there is a lot of air space that precision isn’t as important. With millions of drivers a day, this would lead to many catastrophes.

Auto Correct

lawyer-fail

I’m 50/50 on this one. My current phone, Galaxy 3, won’t auto correct. It suggests what words but it won’t actually change the word. This is annoying when I’m drunk and mistype because the whole process is incredibly time consuming. However, when I did have an auto-correct phone I found that it wouldn’t always correct with the proper word which was equally annoying. Going back and altering a word that was supposed to be corrected is frustrating. My real suggestion is make the keyboard better. Besides, aren’t phones smart enough to produce your thoughts on the screen accurately?

Auto Update

adobe-updates
The automatic update is the pits. Adobe and Oracle are the kings of unnecessary updates. They’ll change one tiny bug and send out a brand new patch that updates a function you never knew existed. It really never ends and displays their ineptitude. Windows is also bad. I’ll update when I want to update because updates usually require a restart. I can’t remember the last time I had an update and thought to myself, “wow, this is really improved.” Tell me if you have an update and I’ll decide when a good time to do it is

Northern Liberties Church

Every time I walk by this church on a clear day I think how good of a picture it would be. I used a shop effect and wanted to add something to the sky but it isn’t coming out better than the original.

Trying and Failing

Michael-Jordan-failing

Where to begin. First I wake up and see that Brandon Jacobs might not play. This is immediately a problem because I have no RB’s to play with McFadden on a bye and Steven Jackson (this guy has been such a busted pick) hurt. I just spent 12 dollars on Jacobs because of this exact situation and knowing that I need a RB to play this week who will get carries. I could try to wait because this “news” might not be correct but with Fitz going for 2.7 and my opponent putting up big points with Russell and Marshawn, I can’t afford another doughnut. That being said, this happened to me last week with Fitz and reading at 1pm that he is hurt and probably won’t play, so I played Stephen Hill and benched Fitz and he ended up going for a 78 yard TD catch. So I’m sitting here scratching my head and eventually dropped Jacobs for freaking Mike Tolbert. This is what my team has come to – trying to find a replacement for Brandon Jacobs!!!!

Football talk aside, I have to repair the faucet that I incorrectly installed and I thought I was going to need new washers because they were too big for the sink but in reality I just didn’t install the washers properly (or at all would be better put). They don’t get screwed in from the top but underneath and I completely missed this on installation. I haven’t attempted this fix but I’m sure something will pop up that makes sure I don’t complete the task successfully.

I’m having more issues trying to fix how my speakers connect to the TV. This shouldn’t be a challenge but it’s blowing my mind. I have two HDMI cables and the one that goes from the cable box makes the most sense to connect directly to the TV. This gets me picture. Now I’d think I have the other HDMI going from the stereo receiver to an output on the TV but this isn’t producing any sound. I’ve tried multiple combinations and can’t seem to figure it out. It’s just one of those things that should work because I have all the components but isn’t. I also need to drill some holes in the back of the TV stand and I can’t do that until I figure out how to produce sound. Another problem.

My final headache comes from the turntable that I got from my parents. I thought it would be cool to listen to vinyl records and it probably would except, once again, I can’t produce sound. The turntable has red/white audio outputs. I bought a splitter that takes the red/white and turns it into an AUX cable. This should work if I plug it into a set of speakers with an AUX but it isn’t. Now I think that I have to purchase a receiver with the phono outputs. I’m 90% sure this would work but the problem is I have to spend money on something that I’m hoping works. This turntable is from the 70’s and I can’t prove it works. It spins and seems to be producing sound off the record but I can’t be sure. Another thing where I think I have everything, it should work, and it doesn’t.

At least football is on but even that is looking grim as I have to take a week off from Fanduel (3 straight 50 dollar losses) and betting (-200 through 5 weeks) so that will keep the action subdued. My fantasy teams are all projected as losers and life is kicking me in the nuts right now. I still can’t play any sports which also sucks because I have all these leagues going on around me. It’s what I told Chad on the golf course, the primary goal of life is to stay alive, everything else is secondary.
