Primetime takes it down

Manayunk Sport and Social Football Champs

It was a frigid December day in the mid-afternoon when history was made. In their first season ever of two hand touch football, Primetime found ways to take down the #1 seed The Hill for the championship. In the first meeting the Hill won in a high scoring affair on a last second drive, this time was different. The game opened with them moving the ball down the field all the way to the goal line and on 4th and short the QB threw a pick right to me for the turnover. Bake marched the team right down field and found Gayle in the end-zone for the early lead. The Hill’s next drive was stymied by our towering man in the middle, the shee. With a display of unbelievable athletic ability, the Shee managed to block the Qb’s pass directly upward and then got the pick for the Hill’s second turnover. Bake took the team down the field a second time and found Jess Romano in the end-zone for the early 13-0 lead. The Hill answered with a score of their own to make it 13-6. I think Gayle might have had another TD and we gave up another score and went into halftime 19-13. Bake came out of the halftime making his first mistake when he overthrew Gusto and got picked off. On their 2nd play the QB threw his 3rd pick on an awesome play by Jess Romano where she just took the ball out of their receivers hands. Huge, huge play that really gave us the momentum. I can’t remember exactly how many scores occurred in the progressing minutes but it was a one score game with about 4 minutes left. It was our ball, 4th and long, and on a roll-out, Bake put a perfect pass (Jkash would say he had to go back for it) into Marcedes Kashub for a huge first down. Jkash coming from a shoulder injury didn’t drop a ball that was thrown to him and there was no rust from the downtime. Gusto got in the end-zone and did a ridiculous spike that came from pure excitement, to put us up 2 scores and the Hill QB then threw his 4th int of the game to Gayle. We put on a final TD and won the game in uneventful fashion. I had a lot of fun this season which is something I’d rarely say. It’s a good group of people and we all get along. It’s funny when we play some of these teams and they just constantly bitch at each other and our team really has none of that. Another huge reason we win is because our girls didn’t drop the balls. They were consistent the entire year and Bake is just a really good QB. I’d give out co-MVP’s to Bake for his excellent Quarterbacking and Gayle for superb play game after game and manhandling opposing teams females. Some contributing members who I didn’t mention, CK4 didn’t find the endzone but is quick to point out that it was the first time this season. Evan had a garbage time TD after I got it to the one yard line on my one offensive play of the game. Jeff likes to point out that he never knows where to play. Jess Baker dropped the ball because she was wearing these really woolly gloves and the ball slid right off them. All in all in was a fun time and I look forward to defending the championship next year.

Alcy’s guide to hard liquor

By |2010-12-03T14:54:54-05:00December 3rd, 2010|My Brain|0 Comments

Liquor in the front and poker in the rear is the Poker Room’s new slogan (also the name of a very good rock ‘n roll album by a band called the Reverend Horton Heat, who are known for their “saucy” lyrics)

I wanted to give my advice on which liquor ranks highly in my book compared to the alternatives. I’ve gone through various phases of my life when I’ve consumed mass amounts of hard alcohol and have assembled a list of my favorites. I’ll break down my preferences.

    Rum

Rum and cokes are my standard for getting messed up. The drink is so simple that no bartender can mess it up and it has the easiest taste to it so you can drink them fast. This isn’t my preference if I had a choice of something to drink but I like it at bars. In college I went through a phase where I was strictly Bacardi and coke. It was around 20 dollars a fifth and a major step up from Bankers. Shooting Rum isn’t my favorite but if it’s in the freezer it’s manageable. I put Cap’t on the same level as Bacardi and I really could care less between the two. I have never found a liking for a high end rum because it’s not a shot drink and can you really taste a difference if it’s mixed with coke? I try to stay away from 151 but that and Cherry Coke go pretty well together. I am also a fan of Rum Runners and Miami Vice’s.

Vodka
I think Vodka is the most standard alcohol out there. It’s a good straight shooter and mixes fairly well. If I’m going to mix it I like it with fruit mixed drinks like strawberry kiwi or pineapple orange. If there isn’t that, I’d put it with Orange juice and practically never with Cranberry. There are so many different Vodka’s but I’ve grown towards Grey Goose as my favorite. I used to order it on the rocks at bars but it will mess you up pretty fast and taste wise there are better things out there. Belvedere and Ketel One would probably be next in line followed by Smirnoff and Absolute. Anything less like Bankers or Vlad are last resorts. I’ve read that you can brita filter those lessers kinds and have an improved blend. Personally, Goose from the freezer is the best and easiest shot to take, no chaser needed. Just to harp on my opinion of a chaser. If I’m just starting drinking a chaser is not a bad idea but once I’m in the flow of drinking I can pretty much handle any shot without the need for one. If I have to use one though I think beer is the best chaser.

Scotch & Whiskey
I’ll group these two together only because my experience with them is less. I think the two obvious standards are Jameson and Jack Daniels. Both are reasonably priced and better quality than the Evan Williams and such. If we are going higher end you’d obviously place Johnnie Walker, Macallan, and GlenFiddich in the Scotch category. The only way I’d drink Jameson is on the rocks. I’m not sure if it’s a good mixer or not but a little ice in there and it’s a nice drink. Jack and Cokes are standard but have never been my thing because I prefer rum. The one time I strictly had Jack and Cokes I was running and faceplanted breaking my two front teeth. Sadly to say I’m not a huge scotch drinker. That doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy it, it just would never be my regular get wasted drink. Scotch and cigars are a manly combination that if you don’t like, most likely you aren’t a man’s man. The only time I really drink the higher end scotches is at the Borgata’s Racebook where they give out free top shelf drinks when you are making wagers. Shots of scotch don’t really bother me but drinking them neat (no ice) or on the rocks is probably a better method. I think Southern Comfort should also be included in the category and I’ve had it with Ginger Ale or Coke and think it’s decent but too much makes me ill. SoCo and lime isn’t a tough shooter either.

Gin
I went through a tangueray and tonic phase sometime in late college and have never really gone back. It’s an ok drink but I just don’t like the Gin drunk. It’s a mellower, not as wild type of drunk. I think the taste when mixed with tonic is fine but it’s not a shooting alcohol. I remember killing a fifth of tangueray one time and then not feeling drunk but just completely sick and after that I’ve never went back. The mixer of tonic just doesn’t work with my body.

Tequila
Strictly a shooting alcohol for me. I’ve had a few Tequila phases in my days and they always lead to trouble. It’s either passing out or throwing up most likely. Cuervo is the obvious choice for reasonably price tequila. Patron would be my choice of better tequila. Warm Tequila makes me want to gag but if the time is right I have no problem throwing it back. Training wheels (salt and lime) are generally not preferred but makes the shot much, much easier. The Rock and I tried to make some Tequila Sunrises one time but I think it proved to be a disaster as the grenadine is still in my possession.

Misc Alcohol
I’m not a huge fan of Jager. For some reason it just doesn’t taste good to me and I think I’ve probably puked a time or two from it’s consumption. I’ve done a boxed wine phase where I’d fill up a 20 oz red cup and just see how many cups I would need to get retarded. I think it used to be about 5 red cups and then you’d go out, not remember anything, and wake up completely hungover. MD 20/20 made me put my arm through a fish tank after drinking 3 (as the legend has it). I have no experience with 4 locos but I intend to stay away. As of late I’ve been mostly a beer guy and have stayed away from hard alcohol as it tends to mess me up pretty good. For some reason I am able to consume more liquor past the point of no return and that tends to lead to problems. Most times I won’t turn down shots though so if you’re buying, I’m drinking.

Just to add good bar drinks / shots:
Carbombs are a hit
Jagerbombs are manageable
MindErasers are insta-blackout
Kamikazes are an easy shot
B52’s are barely a shot
3 Wisemen or 4 Horsemen show how much of an alcoholic you are

So there you go. If you don’t know that much about hard liquor I hope I’ve upped your learning curve and now you can drink like the best of them.

Toilet Blog

By |2010-12-03T12:03:42-05:00December 3rd, 2010|My Brain|0 Comments

This is an appropriate title because this blog has gone to shit. I feel like I’ve written about so many things that I try not to get repetitive, and I can’t think of interesting topics. I’ll sit here and my brain will just be like “what about this idea”, and I’ll think “no I’ve already done that.” How can I possibly keep a good blog when in that last sentence I don’t even know how to do it properly. Do I need quotes, is the comma inside or outside, what about the period? I honestly believe that people are amused by anything which is why I keep updating this as regularly as I do. I just can’t believe that people would find it entertaining that I started to read “the girl who played with fire.” I could go into detail of how I started this on Monday and am 200 pages deep and what I like about the novel but if you have never heard about this book, then who really cares? I’m sure everyone’s fascinated that we have the championship football game on Sat and then a Playoff Basketball game on Monday. Essentially, (yes Gusto I know you don’t read this but I’m stealing the word) I have to take a few days off and come back to it fresh with some new material. Til then.

Technology Attachment

By |2010-12-02T10:47:44-05:00December 2nd, 2010|My Life|0 Comments

I am having phone issues where I put my charger in my phone, I get the lightning bolt on the battery symbol, it stays for a minute and then disappears without getting charged. This has obviously left me in some tough spots because my phone has no juice and I can’t communicate. So being the pro-active person I actively seek out an answer, so I go to the Verizon store, explain the situation and he tells me that he thinks that it’s probably not the battery because bad batteries tend to charge and then completely drain in a short time. Mine wasn’t charging effectively but its like it had a mind of its own and charged whenever it wanted. Fine. So I ask when my upgrade is and it’s coming up in January so I thought to myself I might as well just get a new phone. I don’t really use my phone for everything that I could like apps and games and anything else. I actually had an unlimited data plan when I got my blackberry and I was paying 40 bucks a month for it. I ask what other plans are there and they say there is one for 150 mb a month and it’s 15 bucks. I ask how much do I presently use a month. He said I averaged 7mb for the past 3 months… So I was obviously being a tard for a while there but I got that changed. I ended up calling Verizon and getting them to sell me a Droid X for 279 and an 100 rebate which seemed reasonable to me. I honestly don’t even know what I’m going to do with a Droid X but I figure I use my phone for a lot of things and it’s such a cheap price for the amount of use that why not get the latest.

At this point I’m barely excited to get a new phone but I think I started to get an attachment to my current phone. I feel like I’m just kicking it to the curb like a 2 dollar whore. We spent a long time together and even though the auto correct and my inability to hit the right keys is bothersome, I’ve grown an attachment. I’ve had this phone for over 6 months and that’s an amazing amount of time with me having the same phone. I’ve also accidentally called the Sheee countless times because he’s the first in my contacts. I also lose access to anyone who BBM’s which is really just a handful of people but how is CK4 going to contact me now that he has to pay $.10 for a text message? Another sad note is that the phone has decided to fully charge and is working perfectly after it realized I was going to get rid of it. It’s probably working at about 200% of its usual power. So I’m in a dilemma which will ultimately end in me getting rid of the storm but it had a nice run.

Fantasy Fball Antics

By |2010-12-01T09:33:27-05:00December 1st, 2010|Sports|2 Comments

Just a quick example of how I interact with people. With Gore being out for the season and Westbrook on our waiver wire, I receive this email from the Shee who owns Gore.

“Please Please Please don’t pick up any running backs this week?”

My Response

“You’re good. I have 4 serviceable rb’s and I have to finally use my waiver wire on a defense this week. I can’t play the Jets vs the Pats so I absolutely have to pick up Seattle against the Panthers. You going to try to get Westbrook?”

His response

“Now that’s a good boy Coop. I am going for Westbrook, Gerheardt, then Hart. Gore totally ruined any shot I had at making a run in the league. Now I am just trying to sneak into the playoffs. With Evan’s inflated defense points, I agree with sitting the Jets this week.”

Now I was number 1 on the waivers and I had pretty much planned throughout the season to not waste my waiver wires on people I didn’t absolutely need. As it turned out, the person who was number 2 on the waivers was the person who is tied with me for the division and also the person I have to play this week. He has a shortage of backs and would love to get his hands on Westbrook. So I decide to put in my 1 waiver for Westbrook, assuring I got him, and then put in my 2 claim for Seattle’s D. I ended up getting both spots and can now sit Westbrook on my bench this week and make sure no one else gets his points. The email I received this morning from the Sheee.

“You backstabbing rat! Karma is going to get you BIGTIME on this one”

Ahh the joys of humanity. I’ve wrote before that I’m just not that good with people and here’s another example of the joys of being me. Just to point out one more thing, Sheeee, you were 8 on the waiver list and had no shot at getting Westbrook anyhow.

Bball Post

By |2010-11-30T00:08:30-05:00November 30th, 2010|Music, Sports|0 Comments

Concluding our bball season in week 10 turned out to be uneventful. Ck4 lit it up with 6 3 balls in the first half and the other team was never really threatening. Jkash was back for first time since a shoulder injury from football and I believe he may have re-aggravated it during the bball game. We ended the regular season at 8-2 and probably have the 2 or 3 seed for playoffs. Essentially there were 4 basketball teams in the league and 4 other teams who got some people together. It’s somewhat sad to say that we were one of those good teams considering the 0-8 debacle from the Springfield league a year earlier. As Ck4 would say, if the other team goes man, we lose. We’ll see what happens come playoff time.

Here are 2 songs that I find particularly good.

Thanksgiving Break

By |2010-11-29T09:26:46-05:00November 29th, 2010|My Life, Sports|1 Comment

I haven’t posted in a while. I’m not really in the mood to go through day by day of the events that transpired this weekend and I’m pretty sure no one would really care. On Wednesday we went to see Mr Greengenes at Mad River. Thursday was Thanksgiving and was pretty much just football and dinner with the family. Friday was beer pong with CK4 and then out in Manayunk. The end of Friday resulted in CK4 showing me how he laid down the boom on multiple chairs, Sorry Evan. Saturday brought about the Turkey Tourny which was eventually taken down by my brother Sam, with my brother Jeff getting 2nd and me getting 4th which is a pretty good showing by the Stortz’s considering 26 people played. Not surprising the hosts of the tourny know how to play the game. Saturday was more beer pong with CK4 and then I met up with a female in Manayunk. I haven’t decided how much info to disclose on that subject but we’ll see what happens.

My fantasy football teams went 3-1 and potentially 4-0 if Frank Gore gets leveled on the first play and coughs up the ball and is then out for the rest of the game. This sets me up for a game next week with He Hate Me for the division and a playoff bye. The Nuts nutted on the Moisturizers with a 20 spot from Nate Kaeding. The Terminators continued there domination with a win over Bud and a sure fire 1 seed heading into the playoffs. Only the Mind Erasers take a loss in a much needed game. I now move to 3rd place and fighting for the points lead and the playoffs in Steve’s league. Out of the 4 leagues I’m in, I have 3 guaranteed playoff teams, at least one bye and 2 more potential 1st round byes. All in all a good showing from my fantasy teams.

I also watched Boardwalk and Dexter last night. I found both to be ho-hum episodes and with the seasons beginning to come to a close, I’m a little disappointed. I’m sure they will both conclude in good fashion but the action just seems a little stale. Bball tonight and then the usual week which is capped off by playoff football next Saturday.

Back to normal

By |2016-11-01T23:46:51-04:00November 23rd, 2010|My Life|0 Comments

After 3 days of sobriety I’ve recovered from my 4 day bender of last week. Naturally the good feeling of sobriety is only leading into another 4 day bender. Wednesday is apparently one of the drunkest nights of the year for people. Thursday is getting wasted with the family. Then you move right into normal weekend routine and the turkey tourny on Saturday. This should be a good couple day break and I get the feeling that nobody really minds a holiday break.

I don’t have anything too exciting to post about mainly because work has been slow and I haven’t been doing a whole lot. I’ve been getting to the gym and just lazing around. It’s difficult to come up with good posts when you are being boring. I’ve got a couple of things in the pipeline but I’ll keep you posted.

BBall

By |2010-11-23T09:11:48-05:00November 23rd, 2010|Sports|0 Comments

We suffered a lost last night in bball which puts us at 7-2 for the season. It was a pretty hard fought game and I think we were lucky to be as close as we were. CK4 told me to use the word abysmal to describe our performance. Aside from Bud, no one played very well and we pretty much got beat by a decent team who played man defense and didn’t let us get a lot of easy shots. If any of the other teams read my blog then I just exposed how to beat our team. There weren’t too many other exciting events during the game as we were playing from behind most of the game. I think we got it down to 4 at one point with 30 seconds or so and we just couldn’t get it done. I don’t really have anything else to write about because I haven’t been feeling great and am just really dehydrated. When you stick your tongue out and it’s got this white substance covering it, that’s the #1 sign of dehydration and until that goes away, you’re going to feel shitty.
