Snow (Hey Oh)

By |2011-05-18T22:59:38-04:00January 12th, 2011|My Brain|0 Comments

I went to work today because this little bit of snow isn’t going to deter me. All the streets are fine and even the side streets aren’t bad. I love how people get all worked up that there is going to be a blizzard that they just get in their minds that they won’t be able to go about their day normally. Like I’ve said before, I just wait to see what happens and then I make my mind up. If I thought the snow was too bad to drive in, I wouldn’t drive. If, like today, the roads are ok and everything seems legit, I’ll perform my normal routine. We probably got 4 or so inches of snow and this certainly was on the light end of what was expected.

I have to go to the Oral surgeon today to get my dental implant checked out and see if it did indeed get loose. This could result in more pain and more money, neither of which I’m too excited about. The whole incident was a debacle and unfortunately I’m still paying the price. If it does get bad though, like having to remove the implant, hopefully they’ll give me some good pain meds. If that is the case I know that the bone heals around the implant and it’s already been 3 months of that so I can only imagine what has to happen to pull that damn sucker out.

A funny story from last night. Ck4 and I had a few drinks at the Bayou and it started snowing as we were in there. We left at 11:30 or so and we saw some new channels weather men doing reports. Well obviously Ck4 is intrigued and starts talking to the guy about the NAM and the GFS and these 2 are like peas in a pod. The weather guy, who was our age, does a live report about the snow which was pretty cool. Then him and CK4 start talking about the Zig and the Zag models and I just had to let 2 weather geeks have their fun together. I guess I just don’t really understand the obsession behind forecasting. If it comes, it comes, and then you deal with it.

Cmon Man!

I have nothing new going on except I started The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. I felt good today which proves the effects of one day of weekend drinking compared to 3. I went to the gym and ran some miles. Then I watched the Shee and company beat a team of out of shape, aging members of society in Volleyball. Not to criticize the play, but the amount of points given away on serves is unacceptable. It’s like everyone tries to go for an ace when getting the ball in play gives the better team a much better chance of winning. I had no interest in the BCS game and couldn’t care less.

Only thing I want to bring up is the way people refer to other people as Man or Dude. I heard Dr. Drew talking to Jeremy London and he referred to him as Dude and I was just thinking how inappropriate that type of language is. I don’t mind when people use words like man or brother or buddy but if it doesn’t sound disrespectful, then it just sounds fake. I open the door for someone at LA Fitness and get a “thanks, man.” I’m not some generic human being that you will never meet again, even though I am. How about a “Thank you.” Just keep your ears open and listen to the way people communicate and tell me if you ever notice anything like I’m bring up in this paragraph.

Tues. PM / Weds. AM Snowstorm Update: NAM vs. GFS…

By |2016-11-02T00:04:26-04:00January 10th, 2011|My Brain|2 Comments

Things are progressing nicely as the radar from the SouthEast is blossoming. As this point, there is little doubt that it will snow late in the day on Tuesday into Wednesday morning. The big question is just how much snow will fall. When it gets within the magic 48 hour window of the start time of a storm, the two “go to” weather computer models are the NAM (North American Mesoscale Model) and the GFS (Global Forecast System). One would think that with the technological advances and increased meteorological knowledge, it should be easy to provide an accurate weather forecast certainly within two days of an upcoming storm. Unfortunately that is not always the case (i.e. the snowstorm that recently hit on 12/26 and 12/27).

Currently, the NAM and GFS are differing on their respective outcomes for the upcoming storm. The NAM is showing a much stronger closed upper level low (which pulls the surface low pressure closer to the coast and ultimately provides much higher snowfall totals for the area) as opposed to the weaker (and farther East solution) currently being shown by the GFS.

As previously mentioned, the key to the final outcome of this storm will be the interaction between the northern energy and the southern energy and exactly when and where these two pieces of energy phase. A quicker, more southern phase, would provide greater snowfall totals (as per the latest NAM run). Conversely, a slower, more northern phase, would provide lesser snowfall totals (as per the latest GFS run).

As far as model biases, the NAM does have a tendency to overdue the QPF (Quantitative Precipitation Forecast), also know as the total precipitation forecast. The GFS does have a tendency to underdue the QPF totals. With this said, it is probably safe to provide an initial snowfall forecast based on a compromise between the two models. The NAM is showing about 1 inch of QPF while the GFS is showing about 0.4 inches of QPF. Based on a standard 10:1 snowfall to liquid ratio, the NAM is currently forecasting 8 – 12 inches of snow, while the GFS is currently forecasting 3 – 6 inches of snow.

As of late Sunday night, 5 – 10 inches of snow for Philadelphia seems to be good “first” forecast.

Below are the surface depictions of the coastal lower pressure system depicted by both the NAM and GFS solutions (the images are showing the storm’s placement, intensity and QPF at 7 AM Wednesday morning):

Name Game on Sunday

By |2016-11-01T23:46:06-04:00January 10th, 2011|My Life|2 Comments

So my sports betting is finally Warrick Dunn. I had a good run through the entire football season, cashed out 500 bucks, but currently have 0 dollars in the account. I really have no urge to deposit more money and to bet on games so that pretty much Natrone Means the season is over. I was actually cheering for the Eagles on that last drive and that was with no money even on the game. Tomorrow is going to be a sad day in Philadelphia.

I feel so much better today than most Sunday’s and it’s an easy explanation. I only drank one night this week instead of the usual 3. I feel good and will be able to live a normal week starting on Monday which will be nice for a change. Ck4 is predicting a snowstorm mid week so I may have another weather entry if he decides to write something up. I’ve tried to explain to him that there are tons of knuckleheads out there like him and if he just starts his own weather blog he’ll be able to develop a following. I think he tends to Stevie Nix the idea though. I personally wouldn’t mind some snow breaking up the week though.

I’ve decided to do the frostbite 5 miler, mainly because it substitutes a non drinking event into a weekend. I’m going to have to extend my runs a bit because I’ve because I’ve been quitting between 3-4 miles so I’m going to make a better effort for the next two weeks. I couldn’t understand but my weight fluctuated between 170 and 180 and I thought that was a pretty wide range for no real major change in anything, just day to day to day. I’ve also noted I hate cold and my Eric Frostbite gets really annoying when I run outside. We also have to get ready for bball because I haven’t played since the Ambler league and we start this Sunday. Should be interesting.

I’m also going to give a review of the Biggest Night ever on Showtime. I can’t really remember how they were describing it but it was Californication, Episodes, and Shameless. All the episodes were average and Episodes was one of the worst shows I’ve ever watched. Completely awful. I don’t know how people can watch this show and think it’s good. Shameless wasn’t too exciting either but better than Episodes. Californication was what I expected it to be but lacked some of the witty dialogue and outrageous behavior I’ve come to expect. The girl is unbelievably smoking hot though. Sorry about the lack of names, I forgot.

Sober Saturday

By |2011-01-08T12:57:02-05:00January 8th, 2011|My Life|0 Comments

A rare Saturday entry because I didn’t go out last night and didn’t even have a sip of alcohol. Reason being, my dental implant somehow got loose and that led to the area of the gum to become infected so now I have to take penecillin and then get the implant looked at and possibly removed and replaced. Complete nightmare but there’s really nothing I can do. I was smart though because I went to the dentist only a day or two after I noticed my mouth not being exactly right and obviously had good reason going. So I stayed in and bet on the Sixers and the Knicks which both covered and watched the movie the Town. I went to sleep early and got 10 full hours of sleep and am feeling amazingly good on a Saturday compared to my normal hangover.

Just a quick review on the Town. I thought it was a pretty good movie but completely unrealistic. I can’t understand the whole dating part of the movie between Claire and Doug. Just seemed really dumb. Why is a bank robber starting a relationship with a key witness in the bank he robbed. I think Jeremy Renner is an awesome actor for being a little guy and was easily the best actor in the movie. I don’t really understand all the rave reviews of the movie because it didn’t really have a great storyline. I thought it was kind of stereotypical of a bank heist movie. Ck4 commented that it reminded him of Set it Off and I have to agree. I also watched Extract which was a Mike Judge movie with Joel Bateman, Mila Kunis, Ben Affleck, and Kristen Wiig. The movie had an Office Space feel to it and Joel Bateman was eerily similar to Ron Livingston. I was entertained but certainly can’t say this was a fantastic movie. It had some funny parts when the partner called the employees dingus and dingleberry’s but it only grossed 10 million and with a cast like that it had to lose money. I’m not sure what they are thinking when they produce this movie because I can’t imagine they thought a lot of people would want to see this movie.

Just a few random thoughts. I bought what were called “boxers” on the label and when I open the pack they feel more like boxer briefs. I don’t like how they cling to my legs and suffocate my nuts.
Jess Baker told me she liked my Jersey Shore post and I always wonder the type of people who just refuse to like the show. Have they ever watched it? Do the people who think that the show is moronic understand that the people who like it KNOW that that show is moronic. I understand that when so many people like something it’s a natural tendency to not want to be part of the crowd. The way these characters interact though is really fascinating because it’s such an unusual social environment and their attitudes make for such wild encounters. Good clean fun.
My final observation is that when I stayed in Friday night not drinking or doing anything but watching sports and movies, I get the feeling way more people do this than I think. I literally get wasted and go to the bars 50 out of 52 weekends both Friday and Saturday and this was just a completely different experience. However, I did like it. I slept for 10 hours of real sleep and not drunk sleep. I woke up today feeling sober and good. Although I don’t have any good stories and nothing entertaining happened, I’m not sure that’s necessary for anything. Sort of sad that it takes me this long to realize this but I’m getting there.

Jerseylicious

By |2016-10-28T15:55:14-04:00January 6th, 2011|Tv|0 Comments

This show is a complete train wreck. The awkwardness of actually living in this environment is such a struggle for these “characters” who are actually real people. The tension and social atmosphere is so awesome to watch that even though I feel bad, it’s like a bad car crash, I can’t take my eyes off it. Here are a few quick observations I made after watching the first episode.

The whole season can’t be as good because you can tell they all have money now and that completely changes how people act. Snooki is driving a BMW, Vinnie was in the Benz coupe, the only person keeping it real was Pauly D in that pimp mobile Caddy. Plus they go back to the same house and the living conditions should have been improved. They should have got a much nicer hooked up pad, I don’t know what MTV was thinking but they missed the boat on this one.

Watching the 8 people hang out at the house was painful to watch. First, The Situation is playing flip cup using only one hand, complete rookie move. It’s not “flip the cup” either, and anyone who thinks one hand is better than two is an idiot. The hot tub with Vinnie was unbelievably awkward and he took it like a champ. He has Snookie who wants to be with him and he just banged her best friend so she’s obviously delusional on what to expect out of him. Then she makes the situation worse and worse by saying he wants to bang the “gremlin lookalike.” I just imagine being there and wanting to jump off the building.

I was writing this in between commercials so I could get the details right and the next line was going to be “they should kick Ronnie and Sammie off the show.” I now completely understand why they need to stay. That last scene was pretty sweet. The Deena girl is really annoying but she was a great catalyst for the deeper feelings between why Sammi is the worst character on the show. The way Sammi has her nose up in the air to everyone, she got what she deserved. I love how JWoww stuck up for Snooki and clocked her after Sammi faked a punch. What a move. Sammi punching Ronnie is great too. I have no idea why they’d show that though. I don’t think anyone is going to miss Sammi because she is easily the worse character.

I’m well aware this show is the bottom form of entertainment but let’s just view it as an in depth look at a social experiment. Much easier to watch that way.

Phase You Beast!

By |2011-01-06T22:38:14-05:00January 6th, 2011|My Brain|0 Comments

So the readers of my blog probably aren’t the target audience of a weather blog, but I was happy to post the weather entry to show someone who actually has a passion for something. All the weather jargon is probably over heads and predicting storms a week away on data that can be interpreted as “bad data” seems a bit foolish, but nevertheless the drive and effort is there. I’ve come to a rather obvious conclusion that in order to be truly successful, you have to love what you do. People who make it generally are good at what they do and that’s because they genuinely like doing it. I watched the Katy Perry bio on E and she got shut down multiple times before breaking through. Yes I obviously have a huge crush on her but she just comes off as a real person who made it big due to a lot of hard work and dedication.

Since this is my blog I can give an honest opinion of myself. First off, there have to be a lot of people out there who fall in the category that even if you do love something, you’re probably not ever going to be good enough to make a living at what you like to do. I don’t care how much I love golf, I’m not making the PGA. So the “go after your dream” is somewhat bullshit depending on your abilities. I really ask myself what I like to do and I usually just come up with a lot of middling ideas that will never lead to anything. I think it would be a lot easier if I just sucked at everything but was just good at one specific thing, instead of falling into mediocrity at various topics. I have some talent but it’s mostly just wasted. A very fitting line I might add.

Small Storm Friday Sets Up Big Storm Next Week?

By |2016-11-01T23:44:42-04:00January 6th, 2011|My Brain|1 Comment

That is the million dollar meteorological question.  Yes, there will be some generalized light snow on Friday (1 – 3 inches) caused by an inverted trough associated with a clipper dropping southward from the upper Midwest.  Places to the North and East of Philadelphia will see more snow, with someone around the NYC area, or slightly Northeast, getting between 6 – 12 inches.  This, however, is not the big news in current weather forecasting.  This storm will ultimately deepen and move NE off the coast and become a “50/50” low (a low pressure system sitting at 50 latitude and 50 longitude).  Without getting into too technical terms, it will be placed in a favorable spot for the emergence of the next system on Tuesday/Wednesday of next week.  With energy moving onshore from the Pacific ocean and sliding across the southern tier of the country, a ridge will build out West, causing a fairly sharp trough to form across the mid section of the country.  The trough will slowly move East, and the energy will gain intensity as it “taps” Gulf moisture.  At the same time, a second piece of energy will drift southward from the Pacific Northwest and will ultimately “phase” with the energy sitting in the Gulf states.  Where and when this “phase” occurs will determine whether the energy can turn the corner and move up the Southeast and Mid Atlantic seaboard as a large snowstorm.  The verdict is still out in regards to how the computer models are showing this potential snowstorm unfold, but the potential is certainly there for a big snow event next week.  Could this be the next HECS (Historic East Coast Snowstorm) in a series that have occurred in the last 13 months?

Do as I say, Not as I do

By |2011-01-06T00:42:55-05:00January 6th, 2011|Music, My Brain|1 Comment

If you’ve been keeping yourself up to date with my blog you’d read my New Years resolutions and be like, “wow this guy must really have it together.”  I still haven’t consumed any alcohol since Sunday and have gone to the gym both weekdays.  I have felt very productive at work but there is a feeling of routine that eclipses it all.  I got to a point today, after I went to the gym and ate dinner, and I just thought to myself “now what?”  I have no interest of anything on TV, I played some poker unsuccessfully, and I was bored.  I ended up finishing Alice in Wonderland for the sole hope that one time in a bar trivia game they ask “who wrote Alice in Wonderland” (Lewis Carroll, real name Charles Dodgson) or what story would you find the White Rabbit, Tweetle-Dee & Tweetle Dum, a Jabberwocky and Humpty Dumpty? ” I will astound people with my wisdom and live in bar trivia glory for the rest of my life.  The book’s kind of witty reading although some of the languages makes the wit tough to decipher.  I found the poetry to be boring but the dialog amongst the characters to be fun to read.

The title I used though does represent something.  My previous entry’s  gave some ideas on how to be a better individual.  Let’s get something straight, if you think I can oblige by those rules for an entire year, not happening.  There has to be a balance of regimen and chaos.  Being too boring, although safer and conservative, has it’s negative attributes just like being a wild party animal does.  Laying down ground rules for living is absurd  because you are limiting the experiences you can have.  We all strive to be better because working towards something is better than being content.  Point being (I know I’m clever), sung best by Billy Joel “Black and white is how it should be,
But shades of grey are the colors I see”  I’ll leave it here because anymore writing will just mess up the impact of the last line.  Damn…

2 Gaffes

By |2011-01-06T00:33:32-05:00January 5th, 2011|My Brain|0 Comments

Gaffe –

1: a social or diplomatic blunder

2: a noticeable mistake

This is going to be a short entry but lately I’ve been posting like Wilt Chamberlain so I’ll keep it up.

As I sat by the sink, watching a half keg of Coors light go down the drain, because that’s all we finished for New Years, I began to wonder how this atrocity had occurred.  I don’t leave alcohol unfinished, ever.  That is a trademark I live by.  However, I’m not going to drink out of a keg that’s been moved outside to inside just because I can.  Now it also damages me to return a keg that is only half finished, so rather than put my pride on the line at the beer store, I empty the keg and return it.  As I watched the beer trickle down, I began to wonder why on Earth we got a 100 dollar keg of Coors Light instead of a 60 dollar keg of Natty Light.  As it started to come back to me, I remember CK4 telling me it’s only 10 dollars each split 3 ways.  Now as I really started to think about it, CK4 wouldn’t even drink out of the keg and Evan probably consumes 6+ beers (the only people who’d prefer Coors Light to Natty).  As I remember suggesting getting Natty light while in line, because no one can tell the difference, it pained me to not only be ridding myself of beer but more expensive beer at that.  Me, the alcoholic should be making all decisions when it comes to drinking.  Any opinions on what % of people would notice the difference between Coors keg beer and Natty?

My next issue is with repeating.  I’ve made mention of how I try not to use the same words all the time.   This one person I was with would use the phrase “point being” time and time again.  Once you start using a phrase that often, it loses its effect to the point that you are never making a point.  I can’t take you seriously when you have to point out when you’re making a point because I’m not a fucking moron and I know when you’re making a point.  Next example, when I talk to Baker on the phone, I know he uses the phrase “fair enough” when I’m done talking and he understands and he wants to move to a new topic.  It’s not “fair enough” that I start using it when I talk to him.  Also I notice it to when I’ll be on the phone with a customer and he says something and the deal is complete and I say “sounds good” as a conclusion.  Say he has something else to add, he can’t close the conversation with “sounds good,” I already said that previously.  When it’s your turn to communicate, think of something original rather than copying the other person.
