Oh Lorde!

LORDE

The way my entries arrive isn’t an exact science. Sometimes I know I haven’t posted in a while and I come across something moderately interesting and decide to post it. Other times my mind will produce 5 blog worthy topics in a day that I write down and then execute them over the next couple days. This entry has been a draft for a month now and it was only an idea that I thought would be a good topic. It was going to be about how 16 year old Lorde is rhyming about “gold teeth, grey goose, trippin’ in the bathroom”, and how there is no way she could have come up with those lyrics and how other people are writing her lyrics to make her famous. I held off on writing it because I didn’t have much material other than that thought. Fortunately I read her 2 page piece in the newest Rolling Stone which provided a much clearer perspective of how a 16 year old how becomes a global celebrity.

Lorde isn’t your typical 16 year old. The Rolling Stone Interviewer started with this question, “This might be a weird question – I don’t know if anyone ever feels their real age, but do you feel 16?” This was the leading question to the interview and I’m sure Rob Tannenbaum put some thought behind it. Her response, “That’s one of those questions I get asked in every interview, and everyone precedes it with the kind of thing you’ve just said.” The interviewer asked her how annoying was it to for everyone to ask how you feel being 16, she said, “I’m going to say a solid seven, People will be super-fucking patronizing and talk to me as though I’m a child and I can’t make my own decisions.” Lorde is mature for her age and her family background can explain some of this.

Her mother, Sonja Yelich, is an award winning poet who has been included in the Best New Zealand Poems anthology series four times. That explains where the lyrics come from. She also doesn’t go to school anymore and her answer on why seems to make perfect sense to me, “I don’t know how school’s going to go… I read and write so much anyway I don’t feel I’m particularly missing out.” “I’ve been taking drama classes since I was, like, five, and I’m, like, a fucking killer public speaker. I”m pretty good at turning it on.” After reading this I started to understand that she’s got a set of wits on her that doesn’t jive with a 16 year old. The rest of the interview regarding her take on music and the industry backed up this idea.

I was blown away with her thought on song structure, “I wanted to bend the song around the lyric, as opposed to vice versa, kind of squashing the words in there. The syllables have to match up!” This concept is a leading idea behind what creates quality music vs catchy music. Most pop music centers around the beat and chorus and lyrics are secondary. Think Katy Perry. Lorde is putting thoughfult lyrics behind music and also making it catchy, AT 16! Her take on success and how it happens is also grown up, “It’s weird, because, when you’re in the early stages of a project, it’s so pure – you’re like, “this will never be tainted. Then you get further on and your like, ‘I want people to hear this record, so I’ve got to do something to support it.’ I put my music out with no kind of commercial expectation and found out I was a pop star. The “pureness” in the process of her understanding the music industry is wonderful to see.

I was impressed throughout the entire article and even more impressed when she said, “I’m really interested in the Ivy Leagues, the final clubs, all the really old-money families, the concept of old money.” What? What 16 year old is fascinated with old money. So freaking bizarre because I’ve never gotten one step past old money being old. That’s it. Who gets quizzical about how old money came to be? She may be beamed down and is posing as a little girl because her wisdom is years beyond her age. Obviously anyone who goes into speaking with her expecting a typical teenage conversation is in for a little surprise.

Would I Still Love Katy Perry If…

…she didn’t have 2 great breasts? I’ve thought about this long and hard, ok, short and hard, and have come to the conclusion the answer is… not nearly as much as I do. My interest level wouldn’t be as high and I sat here for 3 minutes straight trying to write this sentence and can’t think of a better reason than a male attraction to female breasts. They are only flesh but hers are perfect. She’s had to have had a boob job and the doctors made them expertly rounded and on the large side. They are not abnormally large though, bigger than average, but not back hurting. She props them up in outfits wonderfully which I’ll document shortly.

I just roared all over my computer screen.

I just roared all over my computer screen.

I saw this page on Yahoo which allowed me to preview the album and after hearing the first song a thought popped in my mind, what the hell am I doing listening to Katy Perry? It’s not like I think her music is amazing but I’ve developed this infatuation with her and I’m fairly certain it’s purely because of her rack. She’s obviously attractive but if she was flat as a surf board, I wouldn’t listen to any of her music. Her target demographic isn’t 30 year old males yet I’m currently previewing her music. Is there anything more to this borderline creep mode?

The only thing I can think of is her success which could add to total attractiveness. Do you realize how many mega hits she’s had over the past years? “I Kissed a Girl”, “Hot n Cold”, “Thinking of You”, “Waking Up in Vegas”, “California Gurls”, “Teenage Dream”, “Firework”, “E.T.”, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”, “Part of Me”, “Wide Awake”, and “Roar”. That’s 12 songs that have all gotten major radio play and I don’t think there’s anyone hotter right now in the music industry. With her new album Prism dropping on the 22nd it’s going to be Katy’s world over these next few months and the radio station will play everything. Anything she does is scrutinized and she constantly delivers. Is she talented? Obviously. Millions of teenage girls worship her. I just add to the list.

Which brings me back to her 2 golden eggs. Without them I don’t think I’d be making this post. Her music isn’t what draws me to her. I don’t usually find black hair females all that attractive, yet, she scores an 11 with me and this gallery will be all the reasoning I need for this post. I plan on tweeting this to her as well so I expect some re-tweets. Tell me I’m not alone here and that this post is coming off as stalkerish?

Miley’s Definitely a Wrecking Ball

How could I not blog about the new Miley Cryus Video? The video set a new record with 44 million views in a 24 hour period on Youtube. Not to mention the 72 million views it’s acquired in a 4 day period. To make matters better/worse, it has 600,000 likes to 300,000 dislikes which has to be close to a record of dislikes for a video. The video itself also symbolizes everything that is right/wrong with our society.

I think a good comparison to this video is Katy Perry’s Roar which was released a mere 8 days ago.

Katy has “only” had 55 million views but a remarkable 668,000 likes compared to only 38,000 dislikes. The two videos are remarkably different and the results will speak for themselves. In one corner you have Miley slutting it up in Wrecking Ball compared to a gorgeous, inspiring Perry singing a mediocre song. Two complete polar opposites competing for market share. After the whorish VMA performance , she followed up with an equally whorish video of licking a sledge hammer and straddling a wrecking ball wearing virtually nothing at all. Katy used her pristine, uplifting image to produce another hit and well produced video to add to her arsenal. What do we make of all this?

All things considered, Miley’s video wouldn’t even have made it to the airwaves 10 years ago so to see a naked 20 year old hanging from a wrecking ball singing is a bit shocking. She comments on the video, “if people can take their minds off the obvious and go into their imagination and see what the video really means, it is so vulnerable. … If you look at my eyes, I look more sad than actually my voice sounds on the record. It was a lot harder to actually do the video than it was to even record the song. It was much more of an emotional experience.” Right. Please click the right link for full effect.

I’m sorry but any time you perform dressed as a whore, people are going to treat you like one. There are no messages that come out of a whore’s mouth other than how to stay away from STD’s. She has gone off the deep end with this video and it does seem like a cry for attention which has been whisked away due to being forced into a demographic that has a mind that can comprehend something other than a Disney skit. Even so, Miley made “the Climb” to the fastest/most viewed video of all time and that is a GRAND GRAND GRAND accomplishment. There is no sarcasm whatsoever in that last statement because that task is nearly impossible for the average person. What she’s done is concentrated on negative/wacky antics that create publicity and people actually care if she were to take a shit. She’s grown to a height that is unapproachable to nearly everyone. Whether that is her goal, I’m not sure but it’s still pretty impressive. Lesson to take out of it, America loves a slut.

I’m not even sure it’s worth going into Roar as I think it’s secondary but she looks damn good from 2:15 on. The video probably cost a fortune to produce but I’m sure it was well spent.

Ylvis – What the Fox Say

I came across this video from a friend who shared it on Facebook and thought it was post worthy. I don’t think I find what other people find interesting about this video though. My initial thought is that people will find the video funny because “what the hell does a fox say” is an interesting thought. They’ll get comedic value out of all the odd sounds and funny dances for what a fox may say. For me it’s more along the lines of, “why are guys from Norway, making a song in English, with high production value about the sound that a fox makes.” Obviously America is the biggest opportunity in terms of benefiting financially from something unique. I get that, but the term “selling out” strikes me as something Europeans wouldn’t exactly be proud of. Plus the name of the group (or guy) is Ylvis which I have to think is pronounced similar to Elvis. Which makes the whole Americanization thing maybe a joke in itself. Which would mean we are getting completely mocked and he is trying to show how stupid Americans are and considering it’s gotten 14 million views, I’d say he’s right.

A Roaring Applause – Gaga vs Katy

Gaga-Perry Mix

Along with Taylor Swift and Rihanna, there are not 2 more popular pop stars than Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. Being perfectly honest, I have no problem with either of their music. I’m sure your typical adult macho male would say you play for the other team if you enjoy their music. My thoughts are that not only are they talented but they work with some of the strongest people in the industry and if they can’t produce decent music with that team, there is something wrong. I’ll fully admit the lyrics of these songs are borderline bad but simple lends itself to the people. The masses need a catchy hook and lyrics that they can relate to. Both of these artists do this wonderfully. I think it’s worth a look to break down the latest singles from each artist and give my opinion.

Applause and Roar both came out the same week and serve as a good comparison. To date, Applause has 44 million views on youtube compared to 34 million for Roar. The official videos haven’t been released but those stats are from the 1st search result. Gaga’s applause has 8 million listens on Spotify and Roar has gotten 9 million. Perry has about 1 million more followers on Spotify. I’d say that it’s difficult to pick a clear cut winner of the two comparing listens. Even their Twitter stats are remarkably close with Gaga having 42 million and Perry with 40. Taylor Swift has amassed 33 while Rhianna has 30 to put things in perspective of how big these two women are. Judging by the stats, this battle is too close to call. The more important indicator is how good is the actual song.

The one separator for me is how long it takes me to get sick of the song. For me this is easy, I give Applause a clear nod. The beat is better and I find the lyrics to be clever. I like the idea of “I live on the applause” because it gets the fans feeling good about what they are doing. Perry’s Roar is a Sara Bareilles knock off of Brave. I don’t detract this from her song but I’m tired of the empowerment schtick. “I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me ROAR.” Same shit as Firework. I think I listened to it total of 3 times and have no interest to hear it again. The beat dropping on Applause makes the song head and shoulders above Roar. It’s more upbeat and a better song in whole. In a close battle between two mega stars, Gaga wins this round.

I think we have to give Katy a big advantage in the sex appeal though. 2 big reasons specifically. I actually don’t like black hair woman but I’m enamored with Katy. Gaga does absolutely nothing for me. I do find her eccentric behavior refreshing though because she knows exactly what’s she doing by being so bizarre.

Berzerk on Khloe

Eminem’s newest single is called Berzerk. Notice that berserk is spelled with an “z” which I suppose makes it have street cred. To all the people who are born in 1990 and above, the back song that is used to rhyme to is Billy Squire’s The Stroke. The lyrics of the song are especially tight (a word I’d never use in person but did because it’s appropriate) and well written. This page from vibe does a nice job of transcribing them. I’m not particularly blown away by the song but Eminem has always been at the top in terms of lyrics. This one is hysterical “That’s why my pen needs a pad cause my rhymes on the ra-hag”. There is another one though that I’d like to address which will become the topic of this post.

“All I know is I fell asleep and woke up in that Monte Carlo- With the ugly Kardashian—Lamar, oh sorry yo/we done both set the bar low”. This was pointed out on the Morning Mash Up and how they felt bad that Khole was being picked on by Eminem as the ugly Kardashian. They went on how rough of a time it was for poor Khole and how she also has to deal with what she’s now going through with Lamar Odom and the wacky shit he’s doing. This immediately popped into my mind as “people actually feel bad for Khloe Kardashian”?

She's not that ugly

She’s not that ugly

First off, Eminem calling her the ugly sister is like saying Chris Gronkowski sucks. It’s not that she’s completely ugly, she’s just not as fine in comparison. Now to feel bad for her because Lamar is going through a DUI and being a complete asshole is another story but guess what, millions of people go through the same thing with guys who didn’t make 8.3 million dollars last year. It’s such a moronic thing to feel bad for these people. I know my heart doesn’t tick like other emotional people in this world but we have seriously become such a huge nation of pussies. Things that make me feel bad are little kids in Syria who are going to get rockets aimed at their country for nothing they’ve ever done. Those are situations where you should feel bad.

1,2,3. I used to have it as 2,1,3 but Kim blew up her ranking.

Lady Gaga – Applause

I don’t care what anyone says about Lady Gaga, her sound and voice are loud. I apologize for the weak back to back pop artist posts which go against my general philosophy but both of the biggest stars in the music industry released songs on the same day. Keeping up to date on pop culture is something this blog does.

Katy Perry – Roar

It must be nice to have this type of network. With already 21,000+ likes and lord only knows how many more within the first couple hours it’s dropped, this is popularity at it’s finest. The video is creative and well done which you’d obviously expect from someone who has the smartest and most talented people working on your team. The song is pretty generic but I’m sure you’ll hear it 100 times in the next week.

I'm underneath her.

The Conversation Within

inner_thoughts

I had some time to kill today and decided to go to Best Buy to buy a CD for my car. In the age of Ipods and cell phones with Wi-Fi, you’d think I wouldn’t be require a CD. The thing is that I pay for my radio listening with Sirius Radio so I feel no need to play music for free by downloading. However, every so often I decide that I need a break from radio and decide to concentrate on an artist. I had listened to all the CD’s in my car, Bruce Springsteen Wrecking Ball , Young the Giant Young the Giant, The Greatest Hits of Squeeze and Oingo Boingo, and Led Zeppelin Mothership, it was time for a change.

I go into the store and into the CD aisles. There are 5 smallish aisles and they barely stock anything but the biggest names. 1 to 2 copies of most decent artists. I see John Fogerty’s new album Wrote a Song for Everyone and decided to keep searching. I needed something that was going to blow my mind as I listened to it because it was replacing something that I pay for. At some point a female employee who appeared to have nothing to do asked me, “if I needed any help?”

My response was, “Just browsing, thank you though.”

What my mind actually thought, the conversation within, was “#1, Do you know anything about music? #2, Since I can listen to almost everyone of these CD’s on the shelf through Spotify, there is almost no chance that I want to spend money on A)Something I’ve already heard B) Something that is less than 4 stars (out of five). Unless the artist is brand spanking new and is dynamite, it’s hard for me to gamble on the unknown. I’m going to need something that is quality oriented throughout because I like to listen to my CD’s all the way through. I’m a fan of Zeppelin, REM, the Beatles and can also enjoy Capital Cities, Fitz and the Tantrums, and the Limousines. With that being said, can you help me?

After reading the dialogue going on in my head and the actuality of the situation, what would you have done?

There is virtually no downside to option 2. I say something pretty pointed and either she is amused or is clueless. At least it’s doing something. I opted for #1, obviously, but was well aware that I could have changed this situation completely with an honest answer. The fact that I didn’t reveal the truthful response, or at least a better answer to her question, is a character flaw. Getting comfortable in these situations and tailoring them to meaningful interactions in life makes the world more enjoyable. This is something that takes time to develop. I remember reading a Malcom Gladwell piece explaining how having a vast network of people, or at least knowing people who do, is a tremendous asset. Doing what I described above is taking advantage of that.

Since I’m sure you’re dying to know. I ended up purchasing the Doors Greatest Hits for $11.99. There are 34 tracks on the 2 disc CD and I’m a value shopper. I considered a few of the Pink Floyd albums I’ve never listened to before but I’m pretty sure I have them on file. Where is Lady GaGa?

How Hot is Kesha?

This is good title because it’s like I’m asking how hot is she knowing she’s hot or it’s asking if she’s even hot? I honestly never have thought of Kesha as an attractive female. She always came off as sort of butch, gross, and almost ugly. After seeing her in the American Girl video, I started reconsidering my position. I went to Google images and started viewing some past photos and I think I’ve made a complete 180. I may go as far as saying she’s incredibly enchanting. The wild makeup and tiger face make me think she’s probably a freak in the bedroom which adds to her allure. I think the way she talks and sings is also kind of luring. I’ll even go as far to say some of her music is catchy and listenable. Here are few pictures and you can decide for yourself. Poll below
