Bonnie McKee – American Girl

I’ve never heard of Bonnie McKee. To follow in the same path as last post, here is her Wiki:

Bonnie Leigh McKee (born January 20, 1984) is an award-winning American singer, songwriter, and actress. Named Rolling Stone Magazine’s “Best Secret Weapon” in 2011, Mckee has co-written eight #1 singles, that have sold more than 25 million copies worldwide. She teamed up with pop superstar Katy Perry to co-write the hits “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” “Part of Me,” and “Wide Awake.” McKee also co-wrote “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz, which became the second best-selling song by a British artist in the digital era.

After watching the video I thought to myself how the hell did Bonnie McKee get all of these celebrities to do this for her? With a further in depth look at her accomplishments, she’s collaborated with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Kesha, Kylie Minogue, Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, Carly Rae Jepsen, Leona Lewis, Adam Lambert, Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Benny Blanco, Mark Foster, Josh Abraham, Greg Kurstin, Anne Preven, and many others. This makes more sense because the video is entertaining to see who pops up next. Here are a few of my observations after watching the video

– Bonnie McKee is hot and flat. Great ass shot at 1:30.
– I’d love to be in the bed with Katy Perry. 3:14 hit the money
– Jenny McCarthy is showing her age.
– Adam Lambert is the gayest. 1:17, enough said.
– Kesha looked really good. I always thought she was dirty and gross but I’ve altered my opinion.
– Macklemore in the tub was pretty hilarious. I assume that was Macklemore.
– Kathy Griffin needs to just stop entirely.
– Who was the girl with the weird hair and random guy?
– Jason Derulo has completely sold out.
– Girl at :27? Girl at 1:27?
– Jewel and George Takei were decent additions.
– Tommy Lee in drag?

Overall I think it was extremely well done and even though the song is as poppy as can be, it still gets and A+ in production. It’s one of those songs that will receive airplay for a few months and then fade into oblivion because the catch is the only thing that holds it up. Awesome youtube video though with all the cameos.

Tom’s Treasures Part 2

Part one of a few of my favorite items can be found here. This will continue the list.

Favorite Pornstar – 90’s Jenna Jameson

I had a hard time making this entry. I don’t think all of these pictures are from the 90’s but they are close enough to that time period to give the idea of what the best pornstar of all time looked like. I feel bad for all the young kids of today who get to see a washed up, plastic, pill popping, rail thin Jenna because she wasn’t always like that. Before ClubJenna and when she was with Vivid, Jenna Jameson was/is the best thing that ever happened to porn. She even had heartbreaker tattooed on her ass so all the guys knew what they were dealing with. It isn’t a contest really. She had the looks, the body, and then even the brains to revolutionize the industry. Jenna in her prime was a work of art rivaling the Sistine Chapel.

Favorite Professional Sports League – NFL
nfl
Far and away the best professional sport. 16 game season, playing once a week, every game is meaningful, hard hitting, talent shines, and nothing’s for certain. The NFL is the polar opposite of baseball and why I love one and can’t stand the other. Even though I’ve never played football I get such a kick out of what these players are able to do and how dedicated they are to their sport because without complete focus, they have no chance. I grew up playing basketball and even though that’s my favorite sport to play, the NBA is a so-so run league. The NFL has hit the nail on the head and with the rise of Fantasy Football (we actually used to play back in the 90’s when Pishy would score by hand), I’m completely hooked. Throw in some action on the games, a beer, a lazy Sunday and I’m in paradise.

Favorite Actor – Kevin Spacey
KevinSpacey
I enjoy Kevin Spacey’s acting. He’s cool, calm, and collected one minute and then at the drop of a hat he can turn ballistic. He gets in tune with the character he’s portraying and then makes you believe he’s the character. It’s acting 101 but he does it better than most. Seven and the Usual Suspects stand out as ultimate villains. American Beauty was obviously one of his main hits and I particularly enjoyed the Big Kahuna which I’m sure no one has seen. I know he did House of Cards as well which I’m sure was great. I could have picked Pitt, DeNiro, Nicholson, Hanks, or Damon for this category but I like Spacey’s style more.

Favorite Album – Dark Side of the Moon
darksideofthemoon
The Dark Side of the Moon’s themes include conflict, greed, the passage of time, and mental illness, the latter partly inspired by Barrett’s deteriorating mental state. For me this is the album I listen to when I’m fucked up. Not so much anymore but Evan can attest to my late night escapades stumbling in at 2am and blaring DSoTM. I’d usually be asleep by Time but when I was listening it was like magic. At 43 minutes if I remember correctly, it’s the perfect length of not being too long or too short. The tracks on it are all top notch and I really can’t think of any other album that is close to this one. I’m not alone either as it remained in the charts for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988. With an estimated 50 million copies sold, it is Pink Floyd’s most commercially successful album and one of the best-selling albums worldwide.

Favorite Shorts – Dockers
dockers_shorts_goldrush_
The shorts are 20 dollars. Most shorts are just shorts but I can’t find anything wrong with the Docker’s shorts. They are priced right, pockets are fine, length is a tad short but not noticeable. They last a long time and you can buy 10 different colors if you wish. I have no reason to try another pair

Tom’s Treasures

Here’s a post that will describe a few of what I consider the best of the best. What you’ll find in this post are my favorite books, movies, games, music and anything else I can think of to round out a full post. I may have to use a couple parts but I have high hopes for this type of post and the commentary it can potentially generate.

Favorite Movie – Schindler’s List
Schindler's_List_movie

It made me cry. I thought about this topic for a while and no other movie I can think of made me cry like this one. Any movie that is able to deliver that kind of emotion has to be at the top of the list. Liam Neeson was phenomenal and even though it’s been years since I’ve watched it, that feeling at the end of the movie has never left me. I’ve seen many good movies too and it’s not only the crying factor, this was an all around wonderful movie. I think I may have shed a tear during 7 pounds as well for what it’s worth.

Honorable MentionShawshank Redemption, Platoon, Forrest Gump, Goodfellas

Favorite Board Game – Clue
clue board
It bothers me that more people don’t like Clue. People think it’s a complicated game and dismiss it. What they don’t realize is that they are missing out on a game that involves trickery, paying attention, and deducing from partial information. It’s a smart person’s game and if you don’t like it… Aside from the games when Bud, Bill, Chris, and myself used to play when we were little, I haven’t found a group of people who actually enjoy Clue. We are trying to get a Risk game together and I’m equally trying to find some Clue participants. Get a clue.

Honorable Mention – Stratego, Scattergories, Chess

Favorite Band – Led Zeppelin
ledzeppelin
This was pretty easy for me. I was listening to Rock and Roll the other day and every song I listened to after it was dwarfed in comparison. Led Zeppelin makes other music worse. The synergy created from all 4 members make this band legendary. I don’t think anyone has touched the benchmark set by them in 40 years. Here was a post I did a while back about my favorite Zeppelin songs. If I’m ready to rock out, I go with Zeppelin.

Honorable Mention – Beatles. Everyone else is on a different tier.

Favorite TV Show – The Wire
thewire
I thought about this for a little while and the answer is the Wire because it ended at the right time. Aside from docks season which was a little whack, every single episode and season delivered. I started drinking Jameson as my drink of choice after mimicking McNulty. Breaking Bad was a close second but I think Bud summed it up perfectly that season 4 didn’t leave a lot unanswered. The 1st half of the 5th season, although good, didn’t need to be. I’ll obviously watch the 2nd half but I think it should have stopped. Knowing when to end a show is important. Bad things happened with Sopranos, Dexter, True Blood… I think Game of Thrones has mighty potential though. I think I watched the Wire in a few weeks time playing episode after episode until my eyes closed. There hasn’t been a better TV show created. I do think it’s a bit unfair though to compare this with a 22 minute episode on a national network.

Honorable Mention – GoT, Breaking Bad, Seinfeld

Favorite Book – Atlas Shrugged

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

This is a weird pick because I skimmed through 75 pages of John Galt’s speech (I’m sure this could be people’s favorite part) which was entirely overwhelming and the ending action scene seemed incredibly dumb, but for 3 months of reading this book I would be engrossed in the life of Dagney, Reardon, John Galt, and Francisco. I even took notes during this book and I was reading it for fun! The story shed light on different political and life views of characters which was mind opening. I probably missed many relevant parts of this story and forget them to this date but if I ever get the chance, I wouldn’t hesitate to re-read this book. This also made me read the Fountainhead which was also incredibly good.

Honorable Mention – Napoleon Hill The Law of Success & Stephen Covey The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Have You Heard My Pink Floyd Cover?

An iconic prism

Pink Floyd’s iconic prism

The song I Sold My Bed, But Not My Stereo (worth a listen) by Capital Cities has a line in it that says “have you heard my Pink Floyd cover?” To most people this line wouldn’t stand out but I sort of pondered it a bit and decided that many people growing up may have no idea of who Pink Floyd even is. It’s completely natural for a 15 year old to be listening to Capital Cities, hear this line, and have never heard of the band Pink Floyd. This would mean that a 15 year old born in 1998! would have to delve way back in classic rock to stumble across Pink Floyd. This got me thinking that I’m getting old.

In my mind it’s almost impossible for me to understand that some people may not know Pink Floyd even exists. To create an analogous situation, a baby boomer would be be scratching their head how someone of my generation would never have heard of the Rat Pack. It makes me understand how when you age, you are constantly being replaced by a younger generation. The great thing is that you don’t even know it’s happening, it just does. I say it’s great because it defines a meaningful concept of change. The only thing constant is change.

What makes this post worthwhile is that Pink Floyd isn’t just another band. Once again I’m going to be an old person again exclaiming how things were so much better back then (I wasn’t even alive while Pink Floyd was at their height for what it’s worth), but it’s the truth. Missing out on Pink Floyd is like never hearing of the Yankees. The lyrics, the guitar, the messages, and the performance all came together to create one of the best bands ever. As time (a Floyd song about how time can slip by, but many people do not realize it until it is too late) passes, greatness is forgotten by the younger generation. Times change, interests change, bands are forgotten and new ones emerge. All natural aspects of life that you get to witness as you go through life. One of the advantages of getting older.

I think it’s tough for an older generation to see young people and know that they are not going to go through life the same way. As an elder you want to take the young’n and put Pink Floyd on your record player and be like, “Listen Sonny, this band blows the doors off of Justin Bieber.” Problem is that you can’t force this type of thinking on young minds because it debilitates thought. They have to want to listen to Pink Floyd and as time passes, Pink continues to get pushed further and further into history. It’s a scary thought comparing Pink Floyd to One Direction. Nevertheless, that is the case and embracing this is important. Nobody like a crotchety old fart.

Check out Capital Cities cover of Breathe which I have to assume is the Pink Floyd cover mentioned in the song that inspired this post.

Best Debut Albums

While listening to Twenty One Pilots today, a thought hit me that an artist’s debut album is sometimes their best album. At the time I wasn’t aware that Vessel was their third album but after reading the info on Wikipedia, it’s clear why this album is finding radio play. “They worked with Greg Wells, producer of Adele and Katy Perry, on their first full-length album on Fueled by Ramen, Vessel.” Working with the right people can bring about success that unfortunately buries my argument but I’ll continue. I particularly like Holding on to You because the line “Holding On To You” is screamed in a way that makes it sincere.

I deduced that a brand new artist has no pressure, all the time in the world to perfect their music, and the ability to have a fresh sound without any interference. My idea is that a talented artist or group comes up with music that the public starts to dig, they work hard to produce their first album, then after success of their first album, they get put on a deadline by management to produce a second album. Thus subsequent albums are usually not as good and the success of the debut album is never lived up to. I’m going to provide 5 examples of debut albums that were far and away the pinnacle of their music. Not of their career, the actual music.

Panic At The Disco – A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out
PanicAtTheDisco-FeverCover
Released in 2005, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out put Panic on the map. “The hit single “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” received massive airplay, and Panic! at the Disco’s success came to a high-point when they won “Video of the Year” on the annual MTV Video Music Awards in 2006.” Camisado, Time to Dance, and Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off has got to be one of the best upbeat trio of songs in a row for this music genre. Their next CD’s produced hits such as Nine in the Afternoon, Ballad of Mona Lisa, and Ready to Go (used in a Coke commercial) but weren’t nearly as tight as their first CD.

Gaslight Anthem – The 59′ Sound
The_Gaslight_Anthem_-_The_'59_Sound_cover
The 59 Sound was released in 2008 and rocks hard and croons soft and everywhere in between. “In December 2008, eMusic named The ’59 Sound the best album of 2008.” Each song deserves a listen which is something you don’t find much on full albums. I’ve probably listened to this album a hundred times through and it never gets old. Brian Fallon, who I’m sure no one knows about, is terrific and has a unique sound that people compare to Bruce but I don’t hear it. He’s his own Bruce. Great Expectations, 59 Sound, Old White Lincoln, The Patient Ferris Wheel, and Even Cowgirls Get The Blues are my favorite. Amazingly the follow up albums missed the mark. Hits such as American Slang, Boxer, 45, and Mulholland Drive were all good songs but I think their style got redundant. It’s not like they were bad, just no where as good as the 59 sound.

The Killers – Hot Fuss
Hot-Fuss
Hot Fuss starts with 5 songs that STILL get radio airplay all the time, Jenny Was a Friend, Mr Brightside, Smile Like You Mean It, Somebody Told Me, and All These Things That I’ve Done. Most bands get lucky to have a song off an album that gets play 9 years later. Hot Fuss introduced the Killers like an 8 on the Richter scale. It is estimated to have sold more than 7 million copies worldwide, including more than 3 million in the United States and more than 2 million in the UK, where it has been certified six-times platinum. The rest of their albums haven’t ever come close to the success of Hot Fuss. Sam’s Town produced crap like When You Were Young, Read My Mind, and Bones. Sawdust had Shadowplay… I actually liked all of Day and Age but not many hits beside Human, Spaceman, and Dustland Fairytale. I even liked most of the new album Battleborn but it got completely overlooked. This is one of the main problems with hitting a home run with your first at bat, not living up to expectations.

Weezer – The Blue Album
blue-album
All ten songs on the Blue Album should be listened to. You can never go wrong playing this album with a group of people unless they are completely lame. You know an album is good when the most popular song, Buddy Holly, is your least favorite. Surf Wax America, In the Garage, and Only in Dreams are my personal faves. To be perfectly honest, I never got into Weezer after this album. I heard their hits on the radio and never wanted to hear anything more. Island in the Sun was a good song… but everything else is worth only one listen to. Nothing Weezer has done after the Blue Album has been as good.

50 Cent – Get Rich Or Die Tryin’
Get_Rich_or_Die_Tryin
I used to listen to rap in my early college years and this CD was played everywhere. Eminem’s verse on Patiently Waiting is still one of the best around. In Da Club is another song that will never die. Less known songs that owned were Heat, Back Down, and If I Can’t. Wanksta was on here too… As of January 2011, it has sold eight million copies in the US, making it the fourth best-selling hip hop album in the US. 50 tried to ride the wave but it crashed early. Candy Shop, Ayo Technology, and Baby By Me were some of his hits after but it was clear that 50 let fame get to his head and lost his drive towards creating. I probably would do if I made a hundred million of dollars endorsing vitamin water.

Vampire Weekend and The National Hit Spotify

I’ve been checking in with Spotify every couple of days and this is the first time I noticed these two CD’s are now listenable. If you don’t have Spotify, get a clue. Reviews to follow or I may just update the post.

The National – Trouble Will Find Me

Trouble Will Find Me

Trouble Will Find Me

I obviously haven’t listened to the entire CD yet but Don’t Swallow the Cap was a great first single. This CD was released on May 17th.

Vampire Weekend – Modern Vampires of the City

Modern Vampires of the City

Modern Vampires of the City

I thought Diane Young was a bit poppy for my tastes but the Rolling Stone RARELY gives out 5 star reviews so I’m pretty pumped to listen all the way through. This CD was released May 14th.

4 Bands With Staying Power

Bands that I’ve heard over a long period of time and don’t get tired of their music are the artists I’m praising with this post. These artist’s songs are played everyday and I will usually not change the station when I hear them on the radio. There are tons of artists who I consider good artists but when I hear their music, I want to change the song. Some examples for me are Tom Petty, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Sublime. I’ve heard the songs so much that I don’t like them anymore because I’m worn out. This list will contain bands whose music has been around for decades and who I will still listen to (almost) no matter what the song.

Men At Work
Men At Work
Men at Work is an Australian rock band who achieved international success in the 1980s. They are the only Australian artist to have a simultaneous No. 1 album and No. 1 single in the United States (Business as Usual and “Down Under” respectively). The group won the 1983 Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and have sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

Only two of their three albums produced notable songs but I think they are dynamite. Business as Usual produced Who Can it Be Now, Down Under, and Be Good Johnny. Cargo had Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive, Overkill, and It’s a Mistake which are all good songs. None of these songs have lost interest to me and I’ll listen through the albums from time to time because they are upbeat and put me in a good mood.

Huey Lewis and the News
Huey Lewis and the News
Huey Lewis and the News are an American pop rock band based in San Francisco, California. They had a run of hit singles during the 1980s and early 1990s, eventually scoring a total of 19 top-ten singles across the Billboard Hot 100, Adult Contemporary and Mainstream Rock charts.

The hardest song for me to listen to by Huey is The Power of Love. I find most of their music to have well thought out lyrics and nice rhythm. Some major hits are Do You Believe in Love, Heart and Soul, I Want a New Drug, the Heart of Rock and Roll, If This is It, Stuck with You, Hip to Be Square, and Jacob’s Ladder. Perfect World or Walking on a Thin Line are my favorite off songs.

The Cars

The Cars were at the forefront in merging 1970s guitar-oriented rock with the new synth-oriented pop that was then becoming popular and which would flower in the early 1980s. The Cars started fresh with their debut album The Cars which went on to go platinum in late 1978. The Cars’ debut album was called a “genuine rock masterpiece” by Allmusic.

I keep finding new Cars songs that I like. Their hits being My Best Friends Girl, Moving in Stereo, You’re All I’ve got Tonight, Just What I Needed, Drive, Dangerous Type, Let’s Go, Good Times Roll, Shake it Up, Tonight She Comes, and You Might Think. If you aren’t familiar with any of these songs, then you’ve never given the Cars a chance. They are all classics and at some point in your life are worth knowing.

Dire Straits
Dire Straits
They also became one of the world’s most commercially successful bands, with worldwide album sales of over 120 million. Dire Straits won numerous music awards during their career, including four Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards—winning Best British Group twice, and two MTV Video Music Awards. The band’s most popular songs include “Sultans of Swing”, “Lady Writer”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Tunnel of Love”, “Private Investigations”, “Money for Nothing”, “Walk of Life”, “So Far Away”, “Your Latest Trick” and “Brothers in Arms”.

My favorite band on the list. Brothers in Arms is one of the best Albums of all time. Even Mark Knopfler’s solo songs are great. I listened to What It Is on repeat for a few days straight. Songs worth listening to that Wikipedia didn’t mention are Skateaway, So Far Away and Expresso Love. No song of theirs that comes on the radio deserves to be changed. I even noticed that Mark Knopfler did the score for the movie Wag the Dog which I didn’t watch all the way through. Solid band.

Paramore – Paramore

paramore 2013

Quality album that is worth listening to. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 selling 106,000 copies which made me realize that it was released and I started listening to it on Spotify. It’s been out for 2 weeks now and it’s the first time I’ve ever listened to a Paramore album in full. I’ve already been through it 3 times today and can’t find a bad song {(One of Those Crazy Girls) kind of sucks}. For starters, Fast In My Car, Grow Up, Hate to See Your Heart Break, and Still Into You are all worthy singles . Now was one of the worst songs on the album and that was released first. It’s rare that I find an album that I can listen to all the way through and not have the urge to change the music. This was one of them. Being a sort of laymen when it comes to the specifics of music I’ll do my best to describe what I like. Williams voice has an soft edge to it, the music moves you through the songs, and I like the hooks. My criticism is that some of the songs sounds the same. 8/10. If you are on Spotify, don’t forget to follow my altnation list which I believe is the best music currently.

From Good To Bad

Everyone is a critic. Whether you want to be or not, at some point during whatever it is you experience, you have to decide whether you like it or not. Some people will go off their first reaction, others will dig deeper for meaning, and others still will analyze something until all meaning is lost. I tend to think I’ve seen enough movies, listened to enough songs, and experienced enough life that I can use my brain to produce original thought about something. I’m going to explore a few scenarios when TV, movies, or music start going south after being great. This happens fairly often when the initial story lines or newish appeal have been played out and the idea gets continued because it’s popular and makes a lot of money.

Django Unchained
djangounchained
The movie that inspired the post because I watched it recently. Fantastic movie for 2 hours and then Christoph Waltz parted and the ending was abysmal. What I loved about the movie was the budding relationship between Waltz and Foxx, the attention to detail in their interactions, and the antagonist DiCaprio had me constantly wondering what he was thinking of doing next. Then the actual climax of the movie occurs when DiCaprio insists to shake Waltz hand, carnage ensues, and unrealistic nonsense follows. I lost interest when Foxx had 25 guns pointed at him and walked away. The ending just got stupid. No hero bullshit could keep me from caring at that point.

Dexter
dexter
I think Dexter WAS a 1st class television show. The Ice Truck Killer, Lundy and the Bay Harbor Butcher, Miguel and the Skinner (the Skinner was actually kind of lame), and then the zenith with the Trinity Killer and Rita. 4 seasons of pure gold. Every episode had you on the edge of your seat wondering how Dexter was going to get out of the jam he got himself in. After season 4, there hasn’t been a quality season. Lumen and Jordan Chase, Travis Marshall, and finally Hannah McKay was all crap. Dexter just got played out and I think the villains make the show and the latter seasons just missed the mark. I’ll still watch the show but I know that it’s not what it used to be.

Family Guy
funny-family-guy-logic-demotivational-posters
After 11 seasons and 205 episodes, this show has gotten whack. I absolutely loved the first few seasons. Their ideas were fresh, they took the jokes to a different level, and the 22 minutes of entertainment was delightful. Somewhere along the way Seth McFarlene became bigger than the show itself and the writers took over. This new thought doesn’t have the same pizzazz as Seth and the show isn’t as good. Same thing happened with the Simpsons over time. People start to lose interest. 6-7 seasons is a solid run but once the ideas start cramping, it’s time to quit.

Weezer
Weezer+Blue+Album+Weezer__Blue_Album
I would go as far as saying I hate every new Weezer song. The Blue album was top notch. Every song was worth listening to. Songs like My Name is Jones, Holiday, Surf Wax America and In The Garage were classics and they weren’t even the hits. Pinkerton was pretty average but The Green Album hit again with songs like Hash Pipe and Island in the Sun. After that it’s been complete crap with Beverly Hills, Pork and Beans, and Troublemaker. Strange how everything after their first album hasn’t been as good. Rivers must have lost his mind somewhere along the way.

U2
Boy, October, and War had a few decent songs (I Will Follow, Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Year’s Day) but the pinnacle of U2 is the Joshua Tree. I’ve included the full album below so you can listen to one of the greatest complete albums of the 80’s. U2 never actually went out of fashion and made good music since The Joshua Tree (Even Better Than The Real Thing, Mysterious Ways, Vertigo, Beautiful Day, One) but nothing in my estimation can match the Joshua Tree as a whole. One of my favorite albums ever. I think Bono is such a humanitarian that he doesn’t have as much time for the music and lost some passion along the way.

Listen to These Alt Songs

Since I have a total of 3 subscribers on my Spotify Altnation playlist, I know my choice of hot songs aren’t getting listened to as regularly as they should. I’m hoping by sharing these on my blog people will follow me on Spotify so I don’t have to actively post like this but I should have the reputation of bringing worthy songs to listen to that are essentially new to radio or pre radio. Mark this post and come back to me in a month. (I’m aware that the 2 Door Cinema song is older but I didn’t get a chance to hear the album when it came out and this is the best song on there. The Red Jumpsuit song is also not on the radio and deserves the play. Andrew McMahon and AWOL are brand spanking new though.)
