Snoop’s Suave Handshake

Do you see how seamless Snoop makes this? He transitions from a dap into a palm handshake like nothing. I watch his eyes and even though they are squinty, he must be seeing how Bill Maher is going in. I think this is my problem. Everytime I think handshake, I go in one way with no mentality for adapting to what the other person is doing. I’m a straight shooter myself, white man business handshake in virtually every social situation. This leads to some awkward thumb grabs and all around confusion. No problem for Snoop.

A Tale of Two Blogs

Varying Blog Traffic

I started a blog for work as an outlet to stay current with customers. Obviously with my 5 year blogging career, it wasn’t a huge learning curve. Actually it was 0. The information just changed from things I cared about to things other people care about. Rnningfool.com is me and information that comes out of my head. The work blog is about the products we are selling and other business related activity. The difference in performance is worth noting. *If you want to read the other blog just go to our company’s website (my last name.com) and find the blog icon on the home page.

Yesterday on my company blog post, I received 150 views. The blog has been up for 9 days. 150 isn’t a vast amount of traffic but if anyone has ever started a blog, you know it takes time to build an audience. Here are the stats from that site over its entire life:

Blog 2

The bounce rate is fairly high but that should come down as the site improves with content. The blog started with a post on Facebook which shows the high traffic beginning. Notice the days leading up to the next big spike produce virtually no traffic. So why the sudden increase? I’ll explain after we view the stats for rnningfool.com. It took approximately 500 days to receive 150 views and the rise was steady.

Getting Bl0g Traffic?

I find this interesting because different outlets are being used to get traffic and different material is being produced for a different clientele.  My blog started by only receiving direct traffic.  People who knew me would type rnningfool.com as a URL into their browser.  Google would send virtually no traffic to the site.  After a year of blogging, Google starts sending some traffic for various posts and I believe it was a Suri Cruise picture that produced this traffic to hit 150.  A Relatively high bounce rate exists and remember that the majority of the traffic is Google landing someone on a picture which means the person doesn’t really want to go to rnningfool, they want to see the picture.

increase-blog-trafficThe company receives traffic in an entirely different manner.  The days leading up to the spike receive almost 0 traffic.  This is because Google isn’t sending anyone to the page and no one knows it even exists because the blog has been up for under 10 days.  However, when I make a post, I post the blog URL on our company Facebook page which has 800+ followers.  This in itself will not produce 150 visitors but people within the industry actually LIKE the post.  When someone likes the post, it gets shared with their entire friend base and the snowball begins.  0 traffic from Google, 100% of the traffic from Facebook.

the-free-thinker-jimmy-ovadiaWhen I post my URL on my  personal Facebook page, it rarely would get more than 3 likes.  This is actually the biggest question mark of this post.  Why does no one care about what I post personally?  Yet when I post an industry specific post on merely some nice pictures of sheet metal projects, people go apeshit.  The answer is quite simple, in our industry, there are less than a dozen people who know how to maintain an interesting blog, possibly less.  Yet there are thousands of people who write about whatever they want like the ordinary rnningfool.  The moral of the story, select projects that few people are doing and do them well.

Squid Misspells Word Kabaragoya

Kid needs to learn what “I know it” means. Quasimodo in the making here. Looks like a Sam Stortz going out shirt as well.

* I misspelled misspell previously. Definitely wouldn’t have got kabaragoya.

Helping a Panther Out

I was driving home today and saw a beggar in the street. He had up a sign that said “I’ve been sober for 167 days and your donation will get you a drawing.” I have these gold coins, they are 1 dollar bills, that I got from a parking lot when I put a 20 in and it gave me 14 dollars of gold coins back, that I honestly have no idea what to do with. I feel strange using them as currency as I was 30 years old the first time I’ve ever seen one. I’m not sure if all cashiers know they exist. Back to the story, I decided to give him a gold coin. I wave him over and hand him my gold dollar and he puts up 4 cardboard boxes with drawings on them. He says I can choose my favorite color scheme. The pretty much blew my mind because I wasn’t expecting a homeless guy to give me buying options. I said I didn’t care and took the red one. He said I picked a crown leaving an arrow. What do you think?

Crown leaving an arrow

The funniest thing about this story was that he was wearing a Pitt shirt which makes me wonder how well the grads (or dropouts) are doing. Obviously he could have found this sweatshirt on the side of the road but I still found it humorous he wore my Alma Mater. How could I not help him out? I recently read that 6.8% of humans on the planet have a college degree. This made me feel better about myself but apparently it didn’t help this bloke.

Love to Hate Athletes

Getting famous for being hot.

Getting famous for being hot.

Some athletes fall into the category that you are glad they are on your team because they help you win, but you’d hate them under any other circumstance.  A couple qualifications to my list is that you have to be good and actually have won a championship or held a record.  Ndamukong Suh falls in this category but he’s on the lions and they stink.  The only athletes people remember 20 years down the road are the winners and the hall of famers, everyone else falls in between.  This list compiles players from various sports who are considered “dirty” or “cheaters” but they win and that’s all that matters in the end.

Maradona

Playing on Argentina

Playing on Argentina

The player that spurred this post.  I watched the ESPN 30 for 30 on him and his epic 1986 World Cup run.  Hell, it wasn’t a run, it was an Argentinian championship.  He single footedly carried his team on his back against England in a huge semi final game that must have been unbelievable to witness.  The clip below is from the England semi-final game and his two goals are shown.

The first one is the “hand of god” goal in which he uses his hand to knock the ball in the net and the refs missed it. I’m not sure how HE cheated on this goal but that followed him for the rest of his life. The second goal is even crazier with him dribbling past 6 defenders and he said the only way he was able to do it was because “England played the proper way.” A key point to take out of his playing style is this, “During the course of the tournament, Maradona attempted or created more than half of Argentina’s shots, embarked on 90 dribbles some three times more than any other player and was fouled 53 times winning his team twice as many free kicks as any player”. Acting and flopping was his forte. Maradona is considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time and I heard about him last night.

Bill Laimbeer

Even former teammate Rodman would pursue Laimbeer.

Even former teammate Rodman would pursue Laimbeer.

After watching the Bad Boys 30 on 30, I started to understand Bill Laimbeer. He grew up from a wealthy family in a Chicago suburb which has to attribute to his cocky, take no shit attitude. He had the backs of every one of his teammates and hated every other player out there. He played to win and ended up taking a Pistons team, led by Isiah, to 2 championships in  89′ and 90′. It was his physical nature that broke the other team down emotionally where they stopped caring about winning, and only cared about fighting Laimbeer. He was a real bad ass who played as hard as he could and every fan and opposing player hated him.  Read Legend Larry’s thoughts on Laimbeer in an interview with Bill Simmons:

Bill-Laimbeer-vs-Larry-Bird-2Bill Simmons: You left the bad blood on the court for the most part but not with Laimbeer? You never really ever liked Laimbeer in any social situation.
Larry Bird: No, It’s because he’s a dirty player. He had to do what he had to do and I understand that but take Ricky Mahorn, he’d hit you and all that but he’d hit you and you’d know you were going to get hit, but he wasn’t trying to maim you. Bill tried to hurt you. He was one of the guys you’d shoot jumpers and he’d try to slide his foot underneath your ankles so you’d twist your ankle. Watch any of our old games and Parrish was always twisting his ankle against the Pistons. So one time I shot a jumper and Laimbeer did it to me and I stepped on his foot, I stepped on it high and didn’t twist my ankle. A quarter or two later he shot the jumper and I slid my foot under and that was the last time he ever did it. He had to play the way he had to play and we all understood that but if you carry too far and carry it over the line, you got to protect yourself.

Barry Bonds

Just a tad stronger

Just a tad stronger

A notorious and controversial figure in baseball.  When Mark McGwire shattered Roger Maris’ home run record of 61 in 1998 by hitting 70, the world was turned on its head.  Maris’ record had stood for 40 years and Mark McGwire explodes it by 9 homers.  3 years later, a new champion emerged.  Barry Bonds hits 73 dingers at the age of 36 in 2001.  Where did this come from?

Take a second to think about how many home runs 73 is.  The all-time home run record, also held by Bonds, is 762.  Barry hit almost 10% of his homers in one season of his illustrious 22 year career.  This next table shows why Barry Bonds is the most hated record holder in all of sports…he roided up.  2001 is the opposite size of his shriveled up dick.  Numbers don’t lie Barry.  People never forget.

Notice something out of the ordinary?

Notice something out of the ordinary?

Bruce Bowen

tumblr_mahn87SPbo1rf6er7o1_500Bruce Bowen is a prime example of an athlete who can do nothing more than be dirty and play defense.  If you took a magical season where Bruce put up his best totals over a 13 year career he’d average 8.2 pts, 3.9 rebs, 1.6 assts, 1.4 steals, and can’t shoot better than 65% from the line.   Lebron almost averages those numbers in a quarter.

So how does someone who is remarkably average stay in the league for as long as he did while managing to win 3 titles with the Spurs?  For one he gets selected to 8 All-NBA 1st and 2nd defensive teams.  He was a decent 3 point shooter hitting around 40% for his career.  And finally, he’s fucking dirty.   Ever watch the jump kick before?

Looks like it’s a Liu Kang jump kick from across the room. Or how about these cheap moves on Vince Carter.  It’s like watching a mediocre talent take his game to the next level by mastering the rules and how to bend them.

Too Much EDM Hurts the Brain

edmThis past week I’ve been listening to the Avicii Spotify radio station and came across music that I liked. I’ve never gave this type of music a shot before and figured it couldn’t hurt to expand my knowledge. First and foremost, I hardly know anything about the genre so I’m not even sure if the “kids” call it EDM anymore or if it is going by some other names like trance, techno, or house music. Either way I figured Avicii is one of the most popular with crushing hits like Hey Brother and Wake Me Up so why not start there.  I’d guess he’s not considered pure because of how mainstream he’s become and the real fans hate the sell outs. Start with the most popular though seemed reasonable.

wnd_8a8ab6f8c73bec43d142bd97b98afa03The station plays the main artists like Avicii, David Guetta, DeadMau5, Tiesto, and Calvin Harris.   Considering these are some of the biggest names in the industry, I was exposed to the biggest hits as well as deeper cuts.  To my surprise, I’d already heard most of the tracks without even realizing it.  Herein lies the problem.  What I’d already heard were the hits (which are no doubt catchy) and the lesser songs flat out aren’t worth listening to. On most 2nd level tracks, lyrics don’t separate these songs so they go strictly on beat and feel.  It all sounds similar to me and out of the hundred or so songs I listened to, I liked less than 10%

[dropcap background=”yes” color=”#333333″]The Drop- The exact moment when you realize you’re about to have diarrhea.   AKA, when the beat drops.

[/dropcap]

pillsNow the songs I did like, I really liked.  If I didn’t think they were incredible songs I wouldn’t have listened to as many as I did.  I think what separated the good from the bad for me was the hooks and beat changes used in the music.  I needed some lyrics to keep my attention.  If it was pure beat, I fell into a trance of not caring, and not listening, to what was playing.  A confusing aspect to me was that songs get remade a handful of times by many artists and then who knows what remix is worth listening to. Avicii remixed his own previous album which is just remixing your own songs?!? Confusing to say the least.

I’ve created a playlist on Spotify that shares the songs I liked but I know most people won’t use it so I’ll add a few Youtube clips. Based on the amount of views on the songs I posted, it’s clear I’m not present in this music.  If DJ Weens is reading this post, all suggestions would be appreciated.

All the organs of the body were having a meeting, trying to decide who was the one in charge…

asshole“I should be in charge,” said the brain , “Because I run all the body’s systems, so without me nothing would happen.”

“I should be in charge,” said the blood , “Because I circulate oxygen all over so without me you’d waste away.”

“I should be in charge,” said the stomach,” Because I process food and give all of you energy.”

“I should be in charge,” said the legs, “because I carry the body wherever it needs to go.”

“I should be in charge,” said the eyes, “Because I allow the body to see where it goes.”

“I should be in charge,” said the rectum, “Because Im responsible for waste removal.”

All the other body parts laughed at the rectum And insulted him, so in a huff, he shut down tight. Within a few days, the brain had a terrible headache, the stomach was bloated, the legs got wobbly, the eyes got watery, and the blood Was toxic. They all decided that the rectum should be the boss.

The Moral of the story? Even though the others do all the work…. The ass hole is usually in charge.

Landon Donovan Snubbed From World Cup Team

landon-donovan-02-240I know very little about soccer but this Landon Donovan story is strange to me. Donovan was left off of the USA World Cup team due to his age (32) or his “lack of heart.” He went on a sabbatical a year ago and came back a changed person which was noticed by Jurgen Kinsmann the coach of the USA team. Landon may not be in his prime, but doesn’t the leading World Cup and MLS goal scorer deserve a spot on the team?

mccann-datalab-donovan-goals2The World Cup roster consists of 23 players. 11 players play at a time and the team gets 3 subs. By my count this leaves a lot of players who won’t be getting into the game.  Without watching Landon play in the past 10 years, it’s hard for me to comment on his declining ability but based on the coach not picking him, I’m sure he’s not as good as he was.  Is this good enough reason though to leave him off?

mccann-datalab-donovan-scoringI vote no.  Here is another graph of scoring chances Donovan created since 2013 on the men’s national team.  That’s 13 more than the next closer player going to Brazil.  I’m obviously missing something here about his loss of talent in the past year.  He is the leading USA World Cup scorer with 5 goals in the past 3 World Cup’s and he has experience like no other.  Is Kinsmann saying that the 23rd roster spot is going to have more of an impact than Landon Donovan?  Doubt it.

Suck it Kinsmann

Donovan scores 2 goals on Sunday night to become the leading MLS scorer of all time.

I Can’t Relax

relax-for-healthIt’s 8:06am on this Monday morning and I’m at my work desk tightening life / work related issues up. I’m well aware that it is an off day but there is a feeling of guilt from not working. I’m sure other people have this same feeling but it has been getting more pronounced the older I get. I think it probably has something to do with increased responsibilities and more activity. Therapists would surely use the word stress but I would disagree.

This weekend is a good example of how this feeling arrives. After work on Friday, life was good. Business was rolling and I felt fine. I went out on Friday night, drank too much but encountered no problems, woke up with a head ache, and my world flipped from good to bad feeling. I lost a few bills at the Sugarhouse casino, sober mind you, and was kicking myself for that. I didn’t have the heart to party it up Saturday night. Yesterday, I was lounging by a pool and this feeling of remorse was carried while I was doing nothing, “just enjoying life”.  Evan and I played some tennis and then I went for a run but I couldn’t shake this bad feeling most likely caused by a combination of booze and gambling. I stayed in last night to shake the cobwebs.

dr_seuss_quote3I feel better today but even better because I’m at work being productive. It’s the slothful nature brought on by alcohol that gives me the emptiness. This sounds like a simple fix, stop drinking. However, even if I was sober yesterday, the idea of doing nothing wouldn’t have changed. Is it bizarre that I actually like work? Or perhaps better put, I need work as part of my life. Today while I type this blog, I’m already ahead of where I was yesterday. I’m then going to clean my car, go for a run, play golf, and wind down by learning German or posting another idea.

I try to have a point to these posts but when I get to the end I just scratch my head and make something up.  I should also add that I’m not looking for any types of sympathy with a post like this.  This is just genuinely how I feel and that’s what this blog is about.
