Shop til you drop

By |2016-11-02T00:12:43-04:00September 17th, 2011|My Life|0 Comments

I have been living a life of boredom for the past few weeks. This is done by choice but if you read my post a few weeks ago, I wrote that I was going to try to take this half marathon seriously and not get wasted on the weekends and try to train for it. This plan was mostly brought to fruition aside from the training part. My weekends have been plain and boring and I’ve been feeling relatively healthy. Tomorrow at 8am after, hopefully, an hour and 20 minutes of running, I will end this little project. It’s nice to feel the same way each morning but I just miss some “excitement”. Perhaps this is the alcoholic in my talking but I will refer to a Family Guy episode where they show two potential life paths of Peter. One in which he never drank and had geeky friends and a straight edge life and another where he was a drunk and all the bad things that happen. The moral is moderation and I believe that this is what I will strive for in the future.

On Friday night I played some poker and got into an interesting pot. I had 33 and the flop game 346. I bet 10 into the pot and was called by one person. The turn brought a 3 giving me quads and the fat woman, who the player to the left of me referred to as Jabba the Hutt, checked and I bet 15 hoping not to lose her, she called. The river brought a 3 card flush and money signs were going off in my head. She bet 35 bucks and I Hollywooded for a moment and said raise and put out 35 chips. She heard the raise and said something to the effect, I call whatever. Obviously this is music to my ears and I then ask does she have to call my bet, I’m all in then. They bring the floor over and the idiot lady is given the option of what she wants to do when I bet 250 into a pot of 80. She ends up calling anyway and turns over a straight and I doubled up in the first 30 minutes. I only left with a 50 buck profit due to some bad play and bad luck.

I woke up early on Saturday and went to get a haircut. I had some really awkward conversation with the barber and we talked about golf a little and he told me the same story he told me the last time I had him. I just didn’t have the banter to make the talk any less tough to get through. After that I went to Barnes and Noble and bought the 4th book in the Game of Thrones Series, Chuck Klosterman’s “Killing Yourself to Live” and a book about the Beatles. I also went to Modell’s and I will predict this franchise will be out of business shortly. They have no customers and a lousy selection. I also went to BestBuy and bought a Squeeze greatest hits CD and a James Taylor album out of the $4.99 bargain bin. Next I went to the mall and will comment on the overpriced Auntie Anne’s stand which charged me $4.82 for a monster lemonade and a pretzel. That was my morning and it felt pretty good feeling sober and spending some money on material goods.

It’s 8pm now and I’m pretty much sitting here listening to music and reading a book by myself. In a sense I find it fairly sad that I don’t enjoy socializing without alcohol but for some reason I just feel better staying in alone and just reading. I’m well aware of my mishaps and abuse of alcohol but spending weeks like this proves that I can be sober, I just have to change my typical behavior. Whether it’s good or bad I’m not really sure but it is a change of pace and I certainly feel healthier. I don’t expect a bang up time tomorrow but it should be a good start to a Sunday filled with football.

Dear City of Philadelphia Parking Violation Center

By |2011-09-16T17:39:52-04:00September 16th, 2011|My Life|1 Comment

Dear rulers of the roads,
I am outraged at the size of the ticket I just received at 4:24pm on 9/16/11. I am a resident of the city and am in town to pick up a race packet at the convention center when I park my car along side the curb at Arch and 12th. I saw a Kiosk about 15 steps back and proceeded to pay $1.25 to allow me to park till 4:49 (I have the receipt). I arrived at this location at 4:22pm. There were cars behind me along the curb and I knew I was only going to be a short period of time and I was not blocking any traffic. I picked up my packet from the convention center and went back to my car to find a traffic violation for $76.00. The time was 4:40pm. While inside for 18 minutes, I was given a ticket after a two minute period. Now, I presume I must have been in front a no parking from here to the corner but I didn’t notice it while I was parking. After two minutes I was ticketed an insane amount of money for the violation. It makes sense the city hires hundreds of traffic cops when they charge $76.00 per violation. I didn’t commit $76.00 dollars of violation fees during this 18 minute window. Enclosed is a check for $20.00 which I feel is a fair amount for this minor inconvenience. I also find the threats that you will charge “significant” late fees upon no payment to be a little totalitarian. Please accept my apologies and payment and we can move past this incident.

A proud citizen of Philadelphia,
Tom Stortz

Brandi Passante Mug Shot

By |2016-11-01T23:30:23-04:00September 15th, 2011|Tv|41 Comments

I found this picture of a Brandi Lookalike and decided to post it because I get a lot of my traffic from people searching for “Brandi Storage Wars.” I’ve read that she was a stripper in her earlier days and this is a mug shot pic from those days. I don’t think it exactly looks like her but the nose seems to be a match. She is really an attractive girl so it doesn’t really shock me she’d turn to stripping. It always seems like her and Jarrod don’t have a ton of money, plus she has 2 kids, isn’t married and Jarrod says “I was her manager.” I 100% believe that this could be her mug shot and that she was a stripper years ago. What do you think?

Storage Wars – Fu Dog Day Afternoon & Unlocked part 2

By |2016-11-01T23:29:50-04:00September 15th, 2011|Tv|1 Comment

I know I’m 24 hours late on my Wednesday Storage Wars post but I didn’t get a chance to watch it last night. The first episode, “Fu Dog Day Afternoon”, was fairly interesting. Dave buying the locker for 35 dollars with the intention of fixing up the tables was pretty crafty. Notice how quick he is to re-furbish old furniture to bring its true value. The Fu-Dog or whatever it was is just the luck aspect. Barry got caught in a bidding war against Dave and got stuck with a pretty crappy unit. I usually don’t mind Dave but the way he called Barry a sucker was really uncalled for and makes him look like a dick everyone thinks he is. Barry found some lawn mowers, a washer and an old 1950’s TV worth nothing that he paid some guy a thousand bucks(a guess) to turn it into a collectible and help him save face. I think Darrell did a great job bidding against Dave on a unit that had potential. Jarrod is just a step below these two guys on the bidding scale and it showed on this particular locker. Darrell’s good sense paid off when he found some mint condition vinyl player that was worth 1,500 bucks with the speakers. After hearing how enthusiastic the stereo guru was to listen to a vinyl on a mint condition player, I feel like going out and buying some top notch equipment to listen to music the right way. I thought the funniest thing was when Darrell was giving his trade secret of looking at the newspaper to see when the stuff is dated. The unit had a newspaper from 91′ and he was like “that was 20 years ago” and I thought to myself “holy shit, he’s right.” I thought the episode was decent but nothing spectacular, the unlocked section was filled with more tidbits.

I find a few things fascinating about the unlocked episode, mainly what Darrell has on Dave. On one episode Darrell’s son Brandon wore a hat that said “”Newport Consignment Gallery”. The thing was he blacked out some letters for it to say “new con” or something like that and Dave was getting really pissed. I feel like there is something from Dave’s past that Darrell knows and hints at but doesn’t bring it up publicly on the show. It happened again on the unlocked episode when they were talking about dead bodies in Storage Units and Darrell said something about disposing of a dead body and made a remark to Dave. Dave just got real quiet and seemed annoyed. It just is something I picked up on but it might be nothing. I thought the asset discussion with Darrell was neat because Dave asked how many of them have sold 1.7 million dollars worth of goods from lockers. Obviously none of them have and they lack the professionalism Dave has and I think they sort of resent that. I don’t know how much Dave nets like Darrell was asking but anyone who puts 1.7 million dollars of revenue searching out Storage Lockers is taking it pretty serious. I think Jarrod envy’s that to a degree because he’ll eventually want to become what Dave is. To some degree I like hearing about Jarrod’s trials and tribulations because he seems more real to a person who would be trying to break into that industry. That’s why Barry is the weirdest character on the show because he doesn’t want to sell goods. He has plenty of money and just buys units to hopefully find weird collectables. The other characters are all about the money. It sort of makes Barry look like a fool when he gets bid up on a locker because he thinks he sees something in the background and he just paid 1,000 bucks for items he doesn’t want. The Phil Hellmuth aspect of the show was sort of lame. They weren’t asking the right questions with Phil and I’m not sure how much of a fan he is of the show but I feel like he could have provided some good insight if they let him go off on his own. Overall though I like the sit downs from time to time, I just would like to see it be a little more or a therapy session. Why does Jarrod hate Dave and why does Dave have the need to punish the competition? Where is the thrill for Barry to bid on units when he doesn’t need the money? I would ask the producer, is Dave a necessity to the show?

This was the conclusion of the first season and I haven’t been hooked by a show in a long time on network TV. I’ve commented before on the realness of the show and why I like it so much. Dissecting the characters is also a favorite because you get to learn their backgrounds and get some insight on why they make certain decisions. Jarrod might not have enough money for this particular unit and can’t afford to bid properly. Things like that. I think that the show will make the characters too big for A&E to have a season as successful as the first. The characters will start making more money because of the show when compared to the selling of goods. They will become bigger than the show. The bidding won’t be real because they will have too much money. I sort of felt that watching the last episode when it seemed like the characters were singled out on certain lockers and they were just bidding against each other while everyone stood and watched them. Once the concept of money gets tossed out, the show will lose it’s integrity. Still though, I had a great time watching this show and really learned a lot. How to price things, what to look for, what may be valuable. A very worthwhile hour of my time each Wednesday night.

Dumber as a hole

By |2011-09-15T08:54:06-04:00September 15th, 2011|My Brain|0 Comments

The title is a joke before people start telling me I misspelled whole. Here is an article from the Wall Street Journal about the decline in SAT scores. To sum up the article, reading and writing scores are at their lowest since 1972 when this data was being recorded. 49% of students who have taken the core classes (4 years of English and 3 or more of Math) are college ready. 30% who haven’t taken the core classes are ready. These are pathetic numbers. It also says that an increase in minorities taking the test may have decreased the scores noting that English isn’t even their first language in some cases. So I pose the question, why are we dumber now than 40 years ago?

I think this is actually pretty easy to answer. People 40 years ago didn’t have as many distractions like TV’s, video games, internet porn… If you give these kids hand eye coordination tests now, I bet the scores would be through the roof with all the Medal of Honor and Halo that is played. Kids just don’t read as much. When I think about all my friends, I can hardly think of any that actually sit down and read a book. I’m not patting myself on the back but I find reading to be highly entertaining and actually enjoy it. Reading words that you don’t know, looking them up and learning something is beneficial. Since reading Game of Thrones, I’ll never forget the word usurper because they use it every paragraph. Plus, reading makes you use your imagination which has to stimulate the brain more than just watching something on TV. I did awful on the reading section of my SAT’s. If you read my blog you’ll see that I’m not a tremendous writer. I just have plenty of lame brain ideas that I can somehow formulate into posts. It’s sad in a way to see our youth actually getting dumber. I feel like I’ve turned into that old man who starts every sentence with “in my day”. It just seems like the US has gotten so laissez faire with education. They need to start cracking whips and turn our students more like the kids in Pacific. Asians have become the smartest race in the world and I’m sure it has a lot to do with discipline. Asians also have the highest salaries to back up their intelligence. The US has more problems than they can count and education is just another.

Your Song

By |2011-09-14T16:11:30-04:00September 14th, 2011|Music|3 Comments

No this has nothing to do with Elton John however this will be a music post. One of the funniest things that happens to people is that they think they own a song that they “discovered”. For some reason there is a sense of pride being the first of your group to find a song or classify a song as popular. It’s like you are looking for the acceptance that you are the guru behind knowing what songs are going to be popular before they are really popular. Now this doesn’t really make any sense because if the radio is playing them, the song has already been deemed as worthy to be played on the radio. I think the truly humorous part is that the person feels like they take possession of the song, that it’s their song. How dare you listen to their song without recognizing that they discovered it. Things really get crazy when two people discover the same song and then it becomes a duel of epic proportions. Myself, I have understood that the only person who owns the song is the person who writes and sings it. Sharing a song with people is perfectly acceptable under the pretense that everyone is allowed to enjoy it without giving you credit for the song. Here is a song by Snow Patrol called Calling out in the Dark that is relatively new and I discovered it before Snow Patrol even wrote it. Enjoy.

Fantasy Football Secret – Targets and Carries

By |2011-09-14T10:24:49-04:00September 14th, 2011|Sports|0 Comments

I’m not nearly as good as I think I am at fantasy football but I still have my own theories on what makes a player good. I have to laugh when I hear people before the season begins telling me how good a guy like Benjarvus Green-Ellis or Mark Ingram will be. The key to good fantasy players is carries and targets. It’s what makes an average back like Cedric Benson (25 carries) a must start. Now take a guy like the “law firm” and notice he only had 7 carries with Danny Woodhead getting 14. You just can’t play Benjarvus if that’s all the carries he’ll get. Javhid Best had 20+ carries this week and as long as he stays healthy looks like a decent back. A line like 20 carries for 40 yards is way more appealing to me than a guy who had 5 carries for 60 yards. Consistency is key to fantasy football. Guys who put up donuts will lose you football games. Guys like Benson who touch the ball that many times are going to be more consistent even in their bad weeks. Targets are the same idea. Receptions are a good indicator of how often a receiver gets the ball but a target is more important because it shows how much the QB is looking in his direction. This is why Steve Smith was a good pick because the pre-season report was saying how often Cam was looking to give him the ball. This is just my advice to try to find consistency. A guy like DeSean seems like a good fantasy player but he’ll have 3 catches for 150 yards some games and 0 catches other games. Wes Welker consistently catches 5+ passes for yards and TD’s. Consistency is the key to winning and if you want a fair evaluation of how good your back might be, look at how many times he’s touching the ball.

Novak Djokovic is from another planet

By |2016-11-01T23:30:13-04:00September 13th, 2011|Sports|0 Comments

His head is longer than it is wide. This guy is a super freak. Every time I look at Novak, I think about the Swedish guy from this clip.

This guy could get so much pussy that it’s unheard of but he probably acts just like the fool in this video after a match. Look at this awkward martian!

This is the best tennis player in the world?!?! He just seems so foreign that anything he does is far out. He is one of a few people who sits in a pressurized egg to recover from matches. I seriously think that he might be an alien beamed down to take over the tennis world. Apparently he has a super hot girlfriend named Jelena Ristic which makes his life all the better.

To sum it up, he is owning life.

Monkey See, Monkey Do

By |2011-09-13T12:02:12-04:00September 13th, 2011|My Brain|2 Comments

This bothers me more than life itself. People who keep their phone on the table while eating. It’s possibly the rudest thing someone can do. It’s genuine discontent and disrespect for the people or person you are eating with. I’m practical and not saying that you should never take out your phone when you are out to eat. I will glance at my phone if there is a break in the action, say the person is going to the bathroom, or I am looking something up on my phone to carry the conversation. I also understand that when our parents were raising kids in the 80’s and 90’s, there weren’t rules about when it was appropriate to use your phone, maybe people just don’t understand. Essentially when you choose to take out your phone, you are saying that this is more important to me than you are. Smart phone 1, Human Being 0.

This brings me to the next phenomenon of monkey see, monkey do. It’s a reaction by humans to do what someone else is doing. We were at the golf course the other week and were waiting to tee off when a group behind us (yes it was a slow round) came to the tee box. While waiting, Monkey 1 checked his phone, Monkey 2 didn’t want to be left out and he checked his phone, unable to converse with anyone Monkey 3 decided to check his phone. It was just a weird thing that I feel like I should point out that was brought to my attention by CK4.

If you read this blog you know that I praise the smartphone. I love how it keeps me in touch with my email and how I can surf the web and have all that information at my fingertips. However, I don’t act like it’s my higher power. I don’t flaunt my phone and show everyone my latest apps. I don’t alert everyone what model droid I have or want. I use my phone for calls, texts and emails. I’ve wasted time flinging birds at pigs but never again. I use the phone as an accessory and not my primary life function. Just my two cents.
