Zigging when you should be Zagging

By |2011-10-04T01:27:11-04:00October 4th, 2011|My Brain|1 Comment

So I haven’t really been feeling like I’m on top of the world and this blog is a good place to write my thoughts. Today I had one of the weirdest physical sensations come over me. After viewing my stock ticker and seeing that the TVIX is up to 100, I started getting light headed. This is a volatility play that I recommended at 20 or so 3 months ago (can’t seem to find the documentation) and I actually bought about 7,000 dollars of this at one point. I sold it at around 28. This would have netted me about 25k if I just would have held on to it but like the title suggests, I zagged. I know Chad reads this too and I want to point out that you showing me what this ticker on a regular basis isn’t exactly one of my finer subjects. Now, I can’t really explain it but I started feeling physically ill. I think I came down with a case of ADD where I wasn’t able to pay attention to anything. I was walking around with an IQ level of 50 and feeling like a complete moron. I was bumping into things and crossing the street without looking both ways, I was literally in la-la land. I was trying to think if this could have been a leftover effect from something I did but aside from a coffee earlier in the day, there was nothing. I basically felt like the slow kid in class and if I had to live my life like this consistently, I’d be in trouble. I was concerned that I permanently got stupider.

Fortunately, I went to sleep when I got home and I feel better now. Believe it or not, watching the show Dexter helped me through this. In his monologue he was saying how he endured even his darkest times to get to how wonderful he was feeling today. That sort of helped in the sense that life isn’t always easy and there will be tough patches. This period of time just seems really difficult. The market has been crazy, business isn’t great, there is just an overall sentiment of doom and gloom and I sort of feel like I’m unable to capitalize on anything of any consequence. Basically, everything is just happening with no meaning. And the worst part it, there is really nothing wrong. I’m physically fine and can’t think of one major problem with my entire life. There is no reason I should be feeling down but I feel like I’m just unable to really get a head. The TVIX was just an example of something that I’m able to foresee but unable to capitalize on. It’s zigging when I should be zagging. What that does is just turn you into a boring straight line if you stop zigging or zagging. It’s like the Office Space sentiment “We weren’t meant to spend it this way. Human beings were not meant to sit in little cubicles staring at computer screens all day, filling out useless forms and listening to eight different bosses drone on about about mission statements.” There has got to be an easier way.

The dilution of a TV series

By |2013-03-15T03:30:33-04:00October 4th, 2011|Tv|2 Comments

It’s a sad day when a good TV series goes bad. It happens all the time and for various reasons. The most obvious thing is that once a new show is “good” or even “great”, it sets the bar for the following seasons. Ideally a show would want to be average and continue to improve but more often than not, no body watches an average TV show. So basically the shows that make it all start out good, hit their peak, and then descent down to nearly unwatchable. Once a show has been good for 4-5 years, there is no incentive to end at the height of the show. It’s a money maker and creators will milk it for what it’s worth. Starting from scratch is insane. Aside from The Wire, which quit after 5 awesome seasons, I have 4 shows that I think fall into this category.

The Simpsons

The first Simpsons episode aired in 1989 and has been continuing for 22+ years. This is unheard of. This is the longest running American sitcom. With 488 episodes, this will be my number one candidate for a show that has diluted itself into oblivion. Is this show still good? I honestly don’t know. I stopped watching 10 years ago when I felt the episodes declined into mediocrity. The ratings describe this as well. In 1990, the Simpsons drew 13.4 million households. In 1999, that total using the same metrics declined to 8.2 million. In 2000, there was a switch to actual viewers and that boosted ratings to 14.7 million viewers (which I suspect is comparable to the 8.2 million households.) In 2011, that number is down to 7.3 million actual viewers (probably half that in households.) The show has been on a decline and I assume they just continue making it because it’s the Simpsons and it can be put in history books no matter how shitty it becomes. No one will forget Mr Plow, Don Mattingly’s sideburns, Lisa needing braces, or who shot Mr. Burns, but no one will remember any episode after the year 2000.

Entourage

Who wasn’t fascinated with a look into Hollywood movie star Vinny Chase, his agent Ari and his amusing gang of friends in 2004. This show gave your everyday TV viewer a glimpse into Hollywood. Plot lines were simple with Vince’s attempt to be famous, E and director Billy Walsh’s conflicts, and Ari’s job trying to keep Vince out of trouble. The Aquaman season that brought Vince to fame and all the cool things that success brought was the height of the show. The Medeillin plot line in the 4th season is when things started to turn. The 5th season brought about Smoke Jumper, a movie with Vince as a firefighter, and a terrible decision to bring Turtle into a major plot line with a relationship with Jamie Lynn Sigler. If they would have made an epic 5th season and quit, this show would go down as greatness. Instead the 6th season is complete trash. Vince is out of the action, Turtle is in college, Drama on a TV show and E dating a girl (Ashley) other than Sloan was complete boredom. 7 was an interesting idea bringing Vince’s demise with pornstar Sasha Gray and 8 trying to save his career. The show, running only 22 minutes each episode, brought a show of celebrities and money that most people never have seen before. It was really entertaining even though the plot lines started to fade but this show was about 3 seasons too long. Stopping at the height of success isn’t easy.

Weeds

I can’t remember a show I was captivated by like Weeds. For 3 straight days I caught up and watched the first 3 seasons. A series about drug dealing, on Showtime, was a show that went that extra step with creative plot lines and a hilarious group of characters. The chemistry worked between Nancy and Andy, the family was dysfunctional enough to relate to and Agrestic was the perfect setting for a drug dealing female named Nancy Botwin. The series has been ongoing for 87 episodes which is more than it should have. The beginning seasons with Nancy and her rising role in the pot dealing was awesome. Nancy sleeping with the DEA agent at the end of season 1 made for the best season of the series in 2. The last episode of 2 with U-Turn, the Armenians and everyone else pointing a gun at Nancy in a room made for an unforgettable cliffhanger. I read the synopsis of 3 and nothing really rings a bell. I remember being interested but this show started fading. Season 4 with Esteban and the hole to Mexico is when it should have stopped. 5 is a pregnant Nancy dealing with Esteban. 6 was the worst season with Botwin family on the run and this 7th season was forgettable. I believe season 2 was the height of weeds. I seriously hope there isn’t an 8th season even though they had a Soprano-esque ending in season 7.

24

This was another series I caught up on in a matter of weeks. After watching the first season, I was hooked. After the 4th season, I was saying what the heck. The same plot line kept occurring. Someone was trying to blow up the world, there was a mole in CSI, and Jack Bauer would save the day. Season 3 was my favorite with the Salazar brothers. Jack’s heroin addiction, Kim and the Mountain Lion, Chloe’s constant annoyance and Jack falling for a female were enthralling. The hour by hour concept was also what made this show such a hit. It had never been done before and the shows attention to detail was unreal. However, once David Palmer went down and Wayne took over, I think the show should have quit. FEMALE President Taylor should have never happened. This show was as addicting as any show of all time. I still have great respect for this show but the last few seasons were just not as good. I have a feeling Kim Bauer should have taken the lead.

Miserable

By |2011-10-03T08:36:38-04:00October 3rd, 2011|Sports|0 Comments

I watched the games over at the Shee’s place which is about 10 minutes away from the Philly Stadiums. After the Eagles loss, we were watching RedZone and Scott Hanson referred to being in South Philadelphia as miserable. Little did he know that the city would be in even worse shape after the Phillies game and devastated would probably be a better word.

I just want to take a minute and explain that we predominantly watched the Eagles game over RedZone (not my choice) and I watched basically the entire Phillies game which is almost unthinkable. Both of these teams had eerily similar game trends and outcomes. The Eagles got up early and then basically handed a game over to the Niners whose offense looked way better than it is. Two idiotic plays in the game cost the Eagles dearly. Ronnie Brown trying to throw the ball while on the ground inside the 5 yard line was moronic and Maclin coughing up the ball in a crucial spot sealed it. People will blame the kicker for 2 missed field goals inside 40 yards but for some reason I have a hard time blaming the kicker when you are up 20-3 at half time. The inability to stop the run at the end of the game seems consistent at this point and the other team can just run out the clock without giving the birds a chance. I’m not saying I didn’t tell you so but this post pretty much finishes with me saying “don’t say I didn’t tell you so.”

The Phillies game just confirms why baseball isn’t for me. The game started at 8:30 and ended at 12. In the last few innings the game basically screeches to a halt as every batter gets a new pitcher. The Phillies, like the Eagles, jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first and things looked like they were in the bag with Cliff Lee on the mound. Adding another run in the second was more confidence. But for some reason the Cardinals were able to hit Cliff Lee who gave up something like 12 hits which is a big number. They scored 3 runs in the fourth, almost 4 but a good throw by Ibanez stopped that. A 4th run in the 6th tied the game and Lee gave up a hit to Puljos in 7th for their 5th and game winning run. A big game on Tuesday with Cole on the mound will determine their season most likely.

I’m sure there are a lot of people from Philly who went to both the Eagles and Phillies game and that really has to be a shitty day. Most likely they get up early and tailgate and starting from 1pm till 12am, you get no gratification from our sports teams. Just euphoric ups to start the game followed by dreams crashing down at the end. I will add though that this isn’t anything new to teams from Philadelphia, especially the football team. Getting yourself emotionally invested in these teams is forewarned with caution.

Obligatory Football Post

By |2011-10-03T00:50:19-04:00October 3rd, 2011|Sports|2 Comments

Week 4 is in the books except for one matchup against Ck4 in Bake’s league. I have LeGarrett Blount and the Tampa D vs Josh Freeman and he is up 7 points. I give myself a 75% chance at winning this game. Now in the past I’ve had some run ins with CK4 that didn’t play out my way but it’s not nearly as bad as he’d like to think. I traced our head to head stats all the way back to 07′ and we’ve met 9 times. The overall heads up record is 4-4 and I won in our Championship game last year that I stupidly decided to split the prize money so essentially we tied even though I doubled him up. He’s like Little Mac from Mike Tyson Punch-out and I’m always like Soda Popinski. You would think I would have a huge edge because of my physical superiority but for some reason he just never goes down without a fight. I should be in good shape come Monday night as long as Blount doesn’t put up a doughnut. Assuming I win that game, I’ll move to 4-0 in that league. In the other leagues I’m going 2-2 and there is no Monday night miracle. It’s sort of annoying because the 2 wins come in leagues I’m already winning in and the losses in leagues I’m losing in. I’ll move to 3-1 in two leagues and 1-3 in the others. I lost by 2 points in one game and Morrison will blow me out in the Schmidt’s league where I just can’t buy a win. I’ve been rolling in the other two and Hetrick helped me out this week basically not putting up a winning score. All my teams were solid again and with 2 “mistakes” being made where I played Denarius Moore over Steve Smith and Hightower over McGahee. I’m basically in 1st or 2nd in 3 leagues and close to the cellar in the other 2. It’s still early and I won’t give up. Luck is involved in fantasy football and you just have to stick with it sometimes.

Betting wise I proved pretty strong this weekend. With a little more luck, I almost hit a 7 team teaser. I hit the first 5 in the 1pm games, won the Giants and Denver +19 broke it up in the last game. It was 20 to win 200. I bet on the Saints and the Giants (thanks Shee) which covered and then made a nice 50 dollar bet on the Ravens which won to give me a 90 dollar profit for the week. This puts me almost exactly even for the season and gives me a little bankroll in Bodog. Because I’m a degenerate gambler (I haven’t been), I’ll probably bet on the Colts +10.5. I know they stink but Tampa Bay isn’t exactly firing on all cylinders on offense. It just seems like a weird line to me and I think everyone will jump on Tampa Bay which is why I like the Colts. Evan will most likely beat me in Fanduel for the 3rd week in a row and it’s starting to get a little humiliating. The defenseive points were insane and his 35 from the Ravens sort of blew me away.

Random Thoughts

By |2016-11-01T23:30:45-04:00October 2nd, 2011|My Brain|0 Comments

So I was writing down a bunch of potential topic ideas on a receipt with a golf pencil in my car while trying to drive at the same time and not honk the horn and not crash. I don’t know where the commas go in that sentence so I’ll just omit them all. Or is that emit. Anyway, I lost the receipt and will have to come up with these ideas from the top of my head.

The main character of war movies never seem to get killed by random henchmen. I’m reading Game of Thrones and they have these huge battle scenes where are the main characters are fighting and with thousands of people fighting at the same time, they seem invincible to everyone but another main character. Omar getting killed by the little boy in the Wire is an exclusion to this even though it wasn’t a wild battle scene. My point is that it would seem easy to sneak up on a main character when he’s distracted and maybe stab him with a long spear in the back.

A raccoon corpse looking huge in the middle of the road gave me this one. This raccoon was huge, like 3 feet or so. I started thinking how big it looked and that made me think of how big other animals would look. That then made me think of how a human corpse would look. Considering I’m 6ft, I think it would look really big.

Forgetting something you tell yourself to remember. This happens to me all the time when I’m driving. A specific example, I’ll have gone on a run earlier in the day and will want to see how long it is by tracking the distance in the car. So I’ll get to the starting point and will remember the mile marker on the dash. I’ll start watching it being like, that’s a half mile, 1 mile, then I just start thinking about something else. By the time I park the car, I’ve completely forgot that I was even keeping track of the miles. This also happens with blog topics. I’ll think of one and be like, “Don’t forget this, just remember to not forget it.” Two minutes later I can’t remember what it was and feel like a tard.

I had other ones but I forgot them.

Primetime Football Week 3

By |2011-10-03T08:15:35-04:00October 1st, 2011|Sports|1 Comment

Short a few guys we entered week 3 2-0. Down the Shee and Kope, plus Madison and Evelyn; Bud, Becca, Amber (yes Amber) and a girl who I wasn’t introduced to filled in. The game started off with a big play on 4th and short to CK4 for a nice first down pick up. After that it was another romping. New girl caught a very nice catch for a TD for our first score. Our defense held and than we just kept piling it on. Becca had a nice pick, I had a pick, the defense was pretty average as usual but it just didn’t matter. Jess Baker had an acrobatic catch, JKash with some nice grabs in the middle, Gusto made some tough ones. Baker *threw 0 picks the entire game and it was 35-14 after half time (they may have had 7). Ck4 even got to play Q for a little while hitting me on a long bomb that I didn’t get in the end zone robbing us both of 6 fantasy points. There was little entertainment and the only person I failed to mention was Bud who made some nice stops early on D and almost got his face taken off when CK4 threw a bullet at his head 2 yards away in the end zone. Amber also commented how she didn’t know what she was doing and people trying to help her would tell her “don’t get in the way.” Or maybe it was “try to get in the way.” I don’t remember. 3-0 with a tough match up against the Hill next week.

You don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone

By |2011-09-29T22:34:30-04:00September 29th, 2011|My Brain|2 Comments

So I’ve finally stumbled on to a subject that I think is worthwhile to write about. I went to the gym for the first time since running season has officially ended for me. When it’s nice out, I stop going to the gym and just stay in shape by running outside. After the distance run, I start going to the gym and lifting weights to get stronger. It’s nice because it breaks up the monotony of running. Anyway, my arm strength is extremely weak and I’m weighing in at 178. My ideal weight would be closer to 170. I just got really sidetracked but I felt the need to preface this post with the notion that working out can spur ideas because it generally makes you feel better. Plus I need some filler because my idea for this post is really just one thought that I have to turn into an entry.

This paragraph should have started this entry. My brother Jeff is taking a one way flight to New Zealand on October 2nd. He will be traveling there for a year with his girlfriend Nicole. I’ve added the link to their blog (that they haven’t started updating) in my blogroll for future reference. It should be quite an experience and I’m sure there will be tons of good stories. Their blog will focus on their trip but this entry will focus on the title of this post. I won’t get to see Jeff for an entire year. He graduated college over 2 years ago and I just take for granted that we could have hung out whenever we wanted. It’s going to be difficult to hang out when he’s in New Zealand. It makes me wonder why we didn’t hang out more when we had the chance. This isn’t saying that we never see each other because we do. It’s the realization that people come and go and you have to MAKE the time to spend together. I think this is where I didn’t try hard enough. A good way to spend time with someone is to have a weekly routine. Something that’s the same thing every week. When The Rock lived at home, we used to go to trivia every Tuesday night at the same time. This kept our friendship close and it’s how you strengthen relationships. I regret not doing this with my Bro because there was no reason not to. Most of these nights I’m sitting here reading a book or watching TV instead of missing out on the opportunity to hang out with my brother who I won’t see for a year. I’m sure it happens to everyone and it’s really just the way of life.

I also want to mention that I’m not sad that Jeff is going away and I’m not going to miss him. I don’t feel that way about people. He’s doing his own thing and as long as he’s happy, I’m happy for him. But I’m not going to cry when he boards his plane and I won’t see him again for a year. I know that seems sort of cold I’m not really sure what the proper emotion is. There is nothing with his situation that should make me feel sad that he’s leaving. He’s going to a foreign land and will spend a year doing awesome things and having fun. He should be crying for me because I’m stuck in PA. I know my mom will be bawling when he goes. The only thing I’m sad about is looking back on all those days and not spending more time together. That’s what bothers me more than not seeing him for a year, missing the opportunity when it was there.

The UnFriending Process

By |2011-09-27T17:33:49-04:00September 27th, 2011|My Brain|1 Comment

I don’t get new friend requests on Facebook. I’m past the point of my life of meeting new people and I’m content with never having a new friend. With this philosophy, you’d think I’d want to do my best at holding on to my current friends. You’d be wrong. There are three types of friends I currently have on Facebook. 1) Someone I know in real life that I’ve met on numerous occasions and would actually consider a friend. 2) Someone I met once, was curious about them and befriended them, never to see them again but still have some connection through mutual friends. 3) People who are somehow my friend. People from group 1 are relatively safe that I won’t unfriend them. People in group 2 and 3 can be unfriended if they do something that I don’t like. This will be discussed in reasons below. There is really no bigger slap in the face than an unwarranted unfriending. Unless you’ve done something wrong to the person, you’d never expect to be unfriended. It’s like the person is purposely going out of their way to tell you did something wrong in this facebook relationship. I’d presume that most people don’t ever think they are committing facebook mishaps to get them unfriended. Here are my reasons for unfriending.

  • A girl who is pretty hot, nice rack and I grew up a few houses away from (I barely know her) had about 10 songs in a row that she was listening to and it was updating my news feed with each one with a link to spotify. This started to annoy me and I gave her the heave ho. Clutter my news feed and get unfriended.
  • Steve asked me “how are you friends with this girl” and she was in my biology class in 7th grade and was somehow my friend. She updated her status almost every hour, wasn’t attractive, and I’d never see her again in my life. Unfriend.
  • I unfriended someone who had a lot of weed in their pictures and their wall was covered by inappropriate comments. As much as I feared unfriending this person, I stopped being a coward and did it.
  • Mystery song lyrics can warrant an unfriending.
  • Spamming links (rnningfool.com) doesn’t count. I’m referring to links that are malicious, this is an automatic unfriending even if it’s unintentional.

You’ll notice that people who pretty much stay out of the news feed won’t get unfriended. With that new part of facebook in the upper right that tells people every little thing you do, I wouldn’t want to draw too much attention to myself. Most people don’t see it this way and leave trails and trails of activity that unless I really like you or know you, will get you unfriended. Out of the 350+ “friends” on facebook, I’d say I interact with 30 of them in real life. I have no problem leaving the other 320 but I also don’t have a problem removing them and never thinking about them again. Every so often I’ll think “I wonder what happened to so an so” but this thought happens once a year and usually if they are rumored to have croaked. I am more anti-social than you think and could probably survive without any friends. The fact that I’ve somehow accumulated this many should give some idea of how popular facebook is. However, with no new requests coming in, it’s all downhill from here on out. Once I whittle this list down to my top 100, you can hope you survive the cut.

    Storage Wars Fake!?!

    By |2016-11-01T23:29:39-04:00September 27th, 2011|Tv|15 Comments

Here’s a video from Storage Wars of an editing mistake.

Now does this prove that the existence of the show is fake? Not in my book. What do people think happened? That the producers took a shot with boxes stacked up neatly and then ransacked the unit to place some good items. People are sold on the fact that this is what happens in this show. Everything is fixed and the producers set up good items before hand so that the show is more interesting. I have no proof that they don’t do this but I also haven’t seen any proof that they do. My take is that they have a load of footage from various units and we see the best ones. Now what I do find a bit interesting is that sometimes the facility is only auctioning a half dozen units and I’m not really what is being found in other units. The idea that the characters are really actors is absurd. Here’s a video of Dave Hester being a real person.

I would feel like a real dope if the show really was a hoax and set up. It certainly doesn’t feel that way. My main argument regarding these “reality” shows is that these people aren’t that good of actors. They aren’t smart enough to fake these performances. I’ve said this about various shows because Sammie and Ronnie deserve Emmy’s for their performances year after year if it’s all fake. These characters act like they dislike each other and that’s a hard thing to fake so accurately. I have made one conclusion that is truth though. I’m fairly certain Brandi was a stripper in past years. The one episode she says “all we found here were stripper singles,” and most people wouldn’t use that expression without some background. I’ve said before that I really feel like this series only has one strong season because the show will start to compromise it’s integrity during the 2nd season for a variety of reasons discussed here. No matter though, whether it’s real or fake, I still bit so call me part of the dumb masses.

    Decay

    By |2011-09-27T00:23:56-04:00September 27th, 2011|My Life|0 Comments

I feel like I owe my readers some life update because the majority of my posts lately have been about random topics that strike me throughout the day. I’ve come to the conclusion that these are generally more interesting than my life. After the Distance Run last Sunday I stopped running. Aside from a Bball and Football game I’ve been loafing around watching TV, reading or something else. My Beatles book, fantasy football and random TV has been occupying my time. It’s funny because I’m actually bored writing about it so I can only imagine how you must feel reading about it. It’s just the same routine day in and day out. Work, few hours of freedom, sleep, work… I don’t dislike working but these weeks are really running together. I do get to go to Atlanta in a few weeks for a sheet metal show and then visit the Rock in Ft. Lauderdale for a couple of days. That’s at least something to look forward to. I’ve also been in the market for some wireless speakers and a new computer. With all these songs I have access to, I am sort of limited to listening to them in my room. Hooking up nice speakers that can used for the TV and to play music from my computer or phone would bring me into 2011. Also, the computers out there are really cheap. I like the touch screens where all the hardware is built in the monitor. I’ve always found laptops to be annoying and just prefer a keyboard and mouse that isn’t set up for a tiny person. This computer is almost 6 years old and it still works but it’s time I upgraded to something more modern.
