Monday Morning

I woke up today feeling good because I didn’t get black-out drunk on Saturday night. I pretty much slept a full 8 hours and didn’t wake up once which is pretty unusual. I decided to take 76 to work instead of Kelly because it’s MLK day and it really is a faster way in if there’s no traffic. I also woke up singing Naive by the Kooks for some reason and in crazy, someone has tapped into my brain fashion, I heard the song on the way to work. AltNation struck 3 in a row with that, Shake me Down by Cage and the Elephant and then Electrify by Mute Math. The Middle ended the streak. I’ve been really picky about the music I’ve been listening to lately. I had the Anberlin and Arcade Fire CD’s in my car, both really solid CD’s, but now I have nothing.

Our first Manayunk game was yesterday and it turned into a blowout. I asked Baker to drive from Hatboro even though he wasn’t really into playing and he did so I felt a little bad. Just to point out what a friend does for his friends. The game ended up being a complete romping. We were up 39 to 14 or so at halftime and that was that. The court is a lot smaller than we are used to which may be problematic against better teams but we acquired someone who is actually tall for this league so I think that will help. Y game on Tuesday and this will be the first time we are in 2 leagues simultaneously so I’m hoping to see some improvement.

Just a few random topics. Laura, I’m reading the Girl who Kicked the Hornets Nest and I see where you are coming from it being somewhat confusing with all the characters they are introducing but I can’t say that the book isn’t good. I’ve found each book has taken a different path which is somewhat unusual for an author to have such diversity in their writing. For example, every John Grisham book I read has the same sort of feel to it. This 3rd book in the installment has been the least action but I’m also not finished yet so I may finish with a different opinion.

The Sunday night Showtime shows are a bit disappointing. Californication is missing the mark on its first two episodes. I think they sort of backed themselves into this storyline and it’s just not working. I just wish they could start over and start Hank fresh because it’s just really depressing. Episodes is what I would like to call “trying too hard to be funny.” It’s forced comedy and it’s just bad. I like how they have critics saying how good the show is but that must be because they haven’t watched it. I didn’t even bother with Shameless this week because I call this show “trying to be over the top funny” and it’s just not. Didn’t even tune in.

Onto some more random things. I’ve been sucked into Angry Birds: Season’s Greedings which is different then the original and have 3 starred about a 1/3 of the levels and have wasted way too much time on the game but I’ve come this far that I think I’ll finish it. There is a small feeling of accomplishment when you shoot a good bird and cause mass pig slaughter but it’s a fleeting feeling. I also have been playing some poker here or there and managed to final table a 12 dollar 180 man. I ended up getting 5th but I obviously think I should have won. I didn’t suck out at all to get to that point and then some key hands didn’t go my way. My Tens lost to a KQ in a hand that would have made me chip leader but instead pushed me to the bottom. Then after a nice double up with my AQ vs KJ, I made an awesome read and overpushed with KT against a somewhat shortstack and he showed up with K2 and he flopped trips. Then my send off hand was me pushing my sb of K8 into the same d-bag who snapped called with a T-9 from the bb and managed to flop trips on me again. Good playing, not great result. I’m going to to sign up for Blue Fire Poker again and start taking it a bit more serious. Once I put in the hours of training I’ll by myself a new 23″ monitor so I can 9 table again instead of 4 max.

That’s all that is really going on in my life. I watched a few Modern Family’s yesterday and this episode of Family Guy. Seriously this had me laughing so hard that I have to share. The “hey, there’s my little man” is easily the best part although the paramedic’s come on down followed by the dance is great too. Chris is on fire because he was wanking it and that was similar to Peter and the cow for all the nitwits.

Jerseylicious

This show is a complete train wreck. The awkwardness of actually living in this environment is such a struggle for these “characters” who are actually real people. The tension and social atmosphere is so awesome to watch that even though I feel bad, it’s like a bad car crash, I can’t take my eyes off it. Here are a few quick observations I made after watching the first episode.

The whole season can’t be as good because you can tell they all have money now and that completely changes how people act. Snooki is driving a BMW, Vinnie was in the Benz coupe, the only person keeping it real was Pauly D in that pimp mobile Caddy. Plus they go back to the same house and the living conditions should have been improved. They should have got a much nicer hooked up pad, I don’t know what MTV was thinking but they missed the boat on this one.

Watching the 8 people hang out at the house was painful to watch. First, The Situation is playing flip cup using only one hand, complete rookie move. It’s not “flip the cup” either, and anyone who thinks one hand is better than two is an idiot. The hot tub with Vinnie was unbelievably awkward and he took it like a champ. He has Snookie who wants to be with him and he just banged her best friend so she’s obviously delusional on what to expect out of him. Then she makes the situation worse and worse by saying he wants to bang the “gremlin lookalike.” I just imagine being there and wanting to jump off the building.

I was writing this in between commercials so I could get the details right and the next line was going to be “they should kick Ronnie and Sammie off the show.” I now completely understand why they need to stay. That last scene was pretty sweet. The Deena girl is really annoying but she was a great catalyst for the deeper feelings between why Sammi is the worst character on the show. The way Sammi has her nose up in the air to everyone, she got what she deserved. I love how JWoww stuck up for Snooki and clocked her after Sammi faked a punch. What a move. Sammi punching Ronnie is great too. I have no idea why they’d show that though. I don’t think anyone is going to miss Sammi because she is easily the worse character.

I’m well aware this show is the bottom form of entertainment but let’s just view it as an in depth look at a social experiment. Much easier to watch that way.

Gleek?

So I went back in my archives and found a review I wrote up about Glee back on May 29th, 2009.

“I was bored yesterday and went to Hulu.com to watch an old family guy or something but I’d seen them all and came across a show called Glee. I had no idea what I was about to watch but I thought I read something saying it was decent. It was set in a high school and there’s a teacher who becomes the head of the Glee Club. By the way, his wife is really hot but she’s a complete bitch but does some good acting. I can tell its not going to be a really funny series but it has some potential because the characters seem pretty well developed. For being about something stupid like the Glee club I thought the show was above average. I watched only the Pilot and the series is coming out fall of 09 but it’s worth a watch if you have 45 minutes to kill.”

If you’ve been living under a rock, this show has become one of Fox’s hit series. I’ve followed the show and will continue to agree that it is a good watch. I actually don’t like watching it in real time with commercials so I DVR it and fast forward some through some parts. Specifically the slow songs just get the >>>>> (that’s five) DVR fast forward. I however do want to impregnate Dianna Argon (Quinn). She wears this cheerleading outfit and now that she’s not pregnant (in the show) she is just unbelievably hot. I found the Season 2 opener pretty weak actually with not too many good songs and nothing really happening. I have a feeling the Sue Sylvester shtick might be getting old. I hope I don’t have to turn my back on the series but sometimes when you don’t expect much out of something and it exceeds expectations it leaves a different taste than when it’s supposed to be awesome and seemingly falls short.

Unrelated to Glee, I had the impressions done for my missing tooth. Chalk on another 1,800 dollars to my dental bill and all in all, my faceplant accident cost me close to 5k. That’s about 9k of pretax dollars and certainly makes saving any money a nuisance. People will say to learn from your past mistakes but this one was more expensive than anything I’ve ever been through and now I have a steel implant in my gum for the rest of my life. I’ll chalk this one up to a pretty major fuck up but I have another bizarre injury to add to my list of already bizarre injuries. Fortunately I will make it through with no real problems and will continue on with life the best I can.

Party Down Time

So I’m just gonna keep cranking these out because everyone likes an updated blog. I went to the track today in the 100 degree weather and ran a 5:14 mile which I’m pretty pleased with considering the conditions. When I was finished running, I came back to the house and was sitting outside while sweating profusely and I thought of this hilariously clever title which I was so proud of, I decided to make it the title of this post. Now if you’ve read previous posts you’d know that I’m in the middle of watching Party Down on Starz ondemand and it ends on 7/8 (that’s a date for the slow). Now I wasn’t sure if that meant immediately on 7/8 it ends or if you have the entire day of watching it on 7/8. Anyway, it was about 7pm and I had about 6 more episodes of season 2 to watch and it occurred to me this is Party Down Time. Not watching it being the down time and how cleverly it fit into the title. It’s pathetic how these small, retarded things amuse me.

I ended up finishing both seasons which I started last Saturday just in time. I know probably not everyone has watched this show or probably hasn’t even heard of it so you don’t have to read my quick analysis if you don’t want. I thought the shows jokes were intelligent at times while being off the wall at others. I laughed out loud many times throughout the 20 25 minute episodes. The Roman-Kyle duo was hilarious, Ron played the part skillfully, and I really liked the awkwardness between Casey and Henry. The way that Casey and Henry had trouble displaying their emotions to each other was typical of real life. All in all I just thought it was a great show and watching it in 5 days is the best way to watch any series.

I think what type of TV you watch displays what kind of a person you are. If you like network TV series I would probably stereotype you as not much of a party-er, likes reading, likes sports, likes boring things like walks and going out for coffee. Aside from Family Guy, Seinfeld, and Two and Half Men when there has to be absolutely nothing else on, I find it too… cleaned up. I’m sure there are great crime dramas and good shows but they just aren’t my type. I need action, profanity, crazy shit to happen. The Wire, Weeds, Californication, True Blood, Entourage. Real life, not this watered down sissy bullshit where people laugh just because some cackling audience is laughing in the background (I’m just guessing on that). Now how does my personality differ from what I stereotyped the Network viewer. I drink to much, I actually do like to read believe it or not, funny jokes to me are like “Okay, if he won’t sign, I’ll fire a bazooka up his ass, and take a giant shit down the bazooka hole!” I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with people who watch Network TV, it’s actually probably the opposite for people who can’t watch it, but I think there are two types of laughter’s, the chuckle from a lame joke of Network, and the die laughing on the floor from Party Down.

I sometimes have trouble switching topics so I just insert a line like this to set the record straight. I’ve been feeling really good recently, sobriety I know. My mind works a little better and I just feel better in general. I’m going to a Phillies game tomorrow which is somewhat ironic if you’ve read my past post. I’m just a spectator though without too much interest in the game so it’s really just about the experience. It’ll be a good distraction from Mad River Thursdays and I’ll feel good at work on Friday which should be nice. I’m also working up to the Phil’s 5k next Wed and then the 10k Mud Run next Sunday. If you visit my blog and have any interest, let me know. This also gives me some incentive to not get too lit this weekend which is probably a good thing. Business has been steady and it feels good to be productive again.

The best laid schemes of Mice and Men

I’ve been trying to post daily aside from the weekends and I sort of dropped the ball. Jkash and I were going to go to wing bowl on Friday but we hit a little snag. I should have known I was in trouble after drinking 6 beers before we left for the bar on Thursday, then did 2 shots of this Jim Beam combo, 1 shot of jager, and then a mind eraser. To prepare for the end of the special I probably bought around 5 more beers and was quadruple fisting at point point. I was fine coherently but ended up playing poker till 1:30. When you have a wake up time for 3:30, that amount of alcohol can be problematic. So we pathetically missed it and this was the low of the weekend. Friday and Saturday were kind of ho-hum. I proved my worth in quarters and told some girl she looked like Snookie but that’s really the most exciting part. I was complaining how I have nothing to write about and it’s still somewhat true. I did stumble upon one topic that is worth mentioning though.

There are good things, and there are bad things. Any form of presentation can fall into one of these two categories whether it be movies, songs, TV, or anything else. I want to explain why things are good. A commercial I particularly liked last night was the Simpson’s coke commercial. No it wasn’t funny and I’m not even a real Simpson’s fan (anymore). What I liked about it was the theme and the simplicity. Themes are a key factor in how things become good.

Let’s dissect. We are in a recession and tons of people have the feeling of losing money. This commercial relates to the average American. When something as simple as a coke can give joy to Burns, it symbolizes that money isn’t the only thing that can make you happy. A simple concept of a coke bringing happiness is what I constitute as a good commercial. You can substitute coke for anything, cotton candy bubble gum, asian massage hj’s, making snow angels (for some reason I made one on a high school track and it turned out perfect and it was like a scene from a movie where the character was enlightened with something unexplainable), any simple thing that makes you happy can overshadow a feeling of dejection.

I thought this Dodge Charger was another really good commercial. Once again we (not I) can relate to the experience a man goes through to appease his significant other. Once again, relating to the common person’s experience. All this guy wants to do is drive his Dodge Charger and for doing all these other things, he deserves it. When you can relate to the idea behind the commercial, it makes it that much better.

Here’s one that is terrible. It’s tries to be funny, it’s not. People don’t correlate your Snickers bar to giving them energy for a football game. All around bad. Even the simpletons should find this bad. I enjoy the cheap laugh just as much as the next guy but this doesn’t even make sense. The Doritos’s and the casket was also just as bad and I don’t want to embed it because it will make this post worse.

What really bothers me is that the marketing brains behind some of these commercials probably are not stupid people. And stay with me here. The people of America are so dumb that these marketers actually dumb down the commercial to entertain the non-thinking human. The two commercials I picked out are probably rated some of the worst among the masses. I’m not saying I’m smart but well thought out messages hit me harder than cheap laughs at this point of my life.

A couple more examples away from TV. Paranormal Activity. I watched it this weekend. Bad. Badder than bad. There was absolutely no good from this movie. Maybe if I watched it in the theaters it would have had a better result but honestly this was the biggest piece of shit work I’ve watched in a long time. I’m not even sure it was a movie. How they filled 86 minutes is beyond me. I remember at 54 minutes thinking, has anything happened yet? It can’t be a good movie for the following reasons. The girl wasn’t hot. There is no feeling towards either character. You could care less if either one dies at the end. There is no theme, no message. The point is to try to scare you and I really didn’t even think they did a good job at that. I honestly can’t think of too many worse movies. Kazaam?

A final focus on what makes something good. Let’s take songs. Whose on top right now? Taylor Swift. Why? She sings about common themes that everyone can relate to. Love, growing up, everyday stuff. Obviously talented too, but her songs are moving to people. What’s not good? Carry out by Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. Doomed from the get-go. No beat is going to save this ridiculous concept. I’ve only listened to it once but it’s hook is carrying something out, and that pretty much makes zero sense.

So next time someone asks your opinion if something is good or not, forget the glitz and the glam and try to give an intelligent answer. Like when Jordan Cohen tells me Eragon is a great movie, I just have to take into consideration that the special effects were taking over his mind and turned his brain into jello. It probably could have been a fire breathing dragon flying around for two hours and it would have kept him on the edge of his seat. Sorry Jordan, but for some reason you just come to mind when I think of someone who talks up movies.

24 & Celeb Rehab

So I really don’t have much going on right now and that has me turning to TV. My poker playing has been poor and aside from NFL playoffs I don’t intend to place any bets. I really need a productive hobby but for now, nothing will have to do.

I’m entertained by 24, simple as that. I find the show’s unrealistic parts hilarious and wonder how you can have so many smart people working on one show and have so many minor details just stand out. Jack was talking to the ballers in complete daylight, yet the explosion occurred in total darkness within the same hour. Plus the bro has eyesight to pick up one random guy walking into a house a quarter mile away while he was playing bball. When Jack got the shit beat out of him by Dom, there wasn’t even a scratch. And my favorite, why is Freddie Prinze Jr, Agent ORTIZ? Other than the minor bs and that Jack saves the day time and time again, I thought the first 4 episodes were pretty entertaining even though I swear the commercials are more time than the actual show. Plus, whenever it starts flashing that it’s x:57 and you know there are only 3 more minutes until you have to wait a week again, it’s pretty much TV torture. One last 24 tidbit. The wagon just finished watching and he asked why did she do that to the Russian in the shop, I said “she’s just forcing his hand.”

I watched the first two episodes of the celebrity rehab with Dr Drew and this is one of the best shows I’ve watched. I’m going to go back and watch the first two seasons just because I’m that entertained by this one. Rodman and his whole stance just blows me away because I can really relate. He’s there because the court is making him and he doesn’t really think he has a problem, the guy just likes to get smashed here and there. I love the footage of him at the bar too because he’s a monster man and the shot glasses are like thimbles. I really can’t even write about it because you have to see it to get it.

The real thing that amazes me about the show is the females. When I watch shows like this it just completely proves to me that I have no idea what girls are looking for out of relationships. The girl who had a seizure at the end (which was shocking) took beat down after beat down and then when she talks to Dr. Drew she mentions the word “love”. He looks at her like she’s from space and says “that’s not what love is.” I think because of my upbringing and not being exposed to all the crazy matters that these people have been through, I just can’t understand how people rationalize. I am really drawn to the real life – real problems. I like this show over 24 on account of the last sentence.

Movie & TV Review

This first sentence will direct you to the bottom of this post of a link that is a must click.

I’m going to 180 from my Disney broads post, but I have to admit, personifying Disney characters is a funny post. I was the one who made the first comment on my post so I don’t think anyone took it too literally. I’m just trying to dig myself out of a hole to anyone who read that post and thinks I’m messed up in the head. Something to take out of it though is that strange shit does run through my brain and I really don’t have to many limits on what I’m willing to comment on.

Now to two movies that I watched recently, 7 pounds and funny people. I’ll start with the former as it was suggested by Evan Cohen who tends to maybe give movies a bit too much credit. I just read the Wikipedia page on this movie and it claims mostly poor reviews. However, I sat through the entire movie, giving it its chance, and I must say it was one of the most touching movies I’ve seen. I can see why people would call it terrible and boring, but I found the good nature of Will Smith’s character to be enjoyable to watch. There is really no action throughout the entire movie and I wouldn’t say it was very exciting either. At the end when Rosario Dawson and Woody Harrelson hug, knowing how fortunate they were to have Will Smith’s character in their lives, I was really moved. I sound and feel like a complete homo writing this but I don’t watch too many movies of this type and I really thought it was pretty good. I was entertained for two hours and wasn’t disappointed by the ending, which is more than I can say about this next movie.

Funny People was moderately funny and the ending was really awful. Adam Sandler played a weird role for him. He wasn’t one of his goofy characters but was actually real. His lines weren’t meant to be funny but were meant as a real person playing a real role. It was sort of bizarre actually. Seth Rogan lost some weight and they harp on it with a few jokes but he looks sort of skinny and unfunny. Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman were good for a few laughs and I thought the girl had a funny/good vibe to her character. I’m really sick of Leslie Mann. I guess guys think she’s attractive but I really don’t see it. I don’t think she’s very funny and she’s one of the main girls in all Apatow’s movies which is becoming too much. The movie is 2 and a half hours which is way too long considering nothing really ever happens. A couple funny parts, no good themes or lessons, moderately entertaining, poor ending. One star movie and a wasted 5 bucks. I like James Taylor.

Onto TV. I’m not really going to spoil either of these next two shows. Dexter is just awesome. Arthur has been really developed throughout the whole season. I like how he has a behind the scenes persona as well as the normal life. I sort of think the Rita-family life is getting stale and the LaGuerta-Angel thing bores me. Everything with Dexter and Arthur is spot on though. I can’t wait for the next episode.

The other show I watch is Californication. The upcoming episode is the season finale. I don’t really see this season coming to as big of a climax as there was in the first season. I actually am having problems remembering what finished in the 2nd season. I thought these last couple episodes have actually been dragging a bit. When he had all the girls in his apt with Rick Springfield, that was just pure genius. Runkle and Marcy in the bathroom was a quality scene but the Hank and Karen stuff is mediocre for lack of a better word. It’s ok, but wild man Hank Moody steals the show.

It’s 1:25am now and I have to get up at 6:45 to get to work. I’ve been getting up before 7, 4 out of the last 5 days and I’ve just been tired. I’ve been getting back from work and going to sleep only to wake up and not fall back asleep till now. I miss college days of staying up late and not having to get up till I wanted to. It’s so cliche but you don’t know you have it good until you don’t have it anymore. Our first basketball game is tomorrow which will be interesting. I haven’t shot a ball since the summer and many people can attest, I couldn’t shoot so well then. We’ll have to see

A final sentence. I’m the best Clue player in this house and will accept any challengers. I also think I’m the best at gin but not as strongly as I feel about Clue.

I also have to show this movie created by my roommate, Evan. He is a deranged individual. Enjoy. Fancy Pants Nance

10/20

I watched the Goonies because I thought it was a movie that I should just know about. There are all kinds of these movies that people talk about and if you’ve never seen them you just feel like a dope. I put the Goonies in this mix just because you hear about it from time to time. Basically this movie is horrendous. What a waste of an hour of a half. The bad guys weren’t. The kids were annoying and the plot was retarded. The fat kid Chunk loves Sloth? How does the Mom give birth to Sloth? Chunk you just met Sloth how can you possibly love him. The whole thing was dumb but most likely because I’m about 10 years older than the target age group.

Californication is nearly the best series on television. Hank acts like a dick and all the girls swoon. He’s got a 23 year old stripper, a beat looking TA and a 40 something milf. Runkle is owning the show and I’m just really entertained with each episode. If you don’t watch this show you really are missing out.

Evan and I bet the over in the Phils game last night which was set at 8.5. I know it’s really sad but I could care less about the Phillies and if I have money on the line I’m rooting for the bet. Rollins saved the bet and got the Phils a W so that was good all around. The thing about the Phillies is that I’m not going to be a bandwagon fa(n)g. I didn’t root for them during the season and I’m certainly not going to start going crazy because they are probably going to the World Series. I’ll enjoy watching the games but I have no rooting interest. People who jump on the Band Wagon are what Holden Caulfield would call phonies. These are the worst types of people and cannot be trusted. If you are behind your team when they blow, then this is your time to cherish. I personally don’t get emotionally attached to sports teams, but that’s just me. I actually find it hard to get emotionally attached to anything because the rollarcoaster to me is not worth it. Flat and boring for me.

TV

I’ve watched 2 shows that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone. First one being Community on network TV. Generally network TV sucks, this show was no different. The main character sucked, Chevy Chase wasn’t funny, the foreign guy was forced stereotype retard, and the rest of the cast was no better. I didn’t think there was a funny part in it and won’t be tuning in again. This show follows the office and that is another show I just don’t get. Everyone raves how funny it is and maybe if you’re in an office atmosphere for a job it’s funny, but to me it just seems painfully dull. Does Michael have brain damage or something? I’ve seen a couple of episodes and I know his character is supposed to come off as dopey but I just can’t laugh at the stupidity. I laugh more at the way Kevin looks and talks than the things he says. Everyone thinks Dwight is hilarious but I think he’s mentally retarded. Jim is a smug a-hole who I just want to punch in the face. The girls on the show are all blah. I feel like everyone is overacting. I just really don’t get it. True, I’ve only seen a handful of episodes and maybe haven’t given it a chance but it just doesn’t make me laugh. Given the fact that so many people say it’s the best show I’m going to watch some episodes on Hulu but if I still think it sucks I’ll write about it.

Don’t watch bored to death on HBO because the title is telling. Jason Schwartzman is boring and Ted Danson has seen better days. I may watch episode 2 just to see what happens but I wasn’t amused at all throughout the pilot. What I can’t understand is how people who produce this stuff think its good. If I was working for HBO and watched that past episode, I’d be embarrassed to show it to the public. It wasn’t funny or gripping and the main character sucked. I’m probably hard on a lot of pilots but it’s for good reason. When I watched Californication for the first time 2 years ago I came out of the pilot saying 1) they showed me a nun giving out a BJ 2) they showed me Mia’s boobs 3) and the main character has charisma and is watchable. I gave the show a chance and it turned out to be one of the best shows on TV. I have no problem giving a show a chance but the first episode has to be entertaining or else I’ll move on.

I watched the curb and entourage as well. Regarding Curb, sometimes I think they play out Larry’s rants about weird stuff too long but its still amusing. I didn’t really think the first episode was all that great but I’m sure the season will be good. Leon being an 82 man is hilarious considering they are in LA. I always heard black people like the heat but 82 tips the scale. Entourage was pretty good for a change. I like the Ari-Lloyd feud and hopefully Ashley will say goodbye. I don’t know about anyone else but I have no interest in Turtle or anything that goes on with his character. I hope Jamie moves to New Zealand so Turtles character can stop being such a puss. I still think the season has been weak but at least this week was entertaining.

If I could find out to put this in the smallest font I would. I watched the first couple episodes of glee and the show isn’t bad. Putting all the gayness aside considering its about glee club, the show is well done. They have good character development. The cheerleading coach combined with the principal make for a hilarious duo. The dancing and singing stuff isn’t the reason why I watch the show but it’s still performed well. I won’t review this show due to its homo tendencies and it’s completely on the opposite end of the spectrum of what I usually watch but I’m honest about what I think and this show should probably not be canned.
