E-A-G-L-E-S OH YEAH!

Steve McGrath was nice enough to invite me the Eagles game at no cost. I jokingly asked how far down on the depth chart was I before I got the invite. Higher then Sam was the answer. Jon Bond and I drove over to Steve’s to drink some beers before heading over to the game. Steve’s sister’s place isn’t the ideal place to watch football due to the TV being a ViewSonic and the lack of NFL Redzone but we made it work. I brought over exactly 7 beers and Steve had a 30 pack that between 4 of us we were going to kill. I don’t get to hang out with Jon Bond too often but he cracks me up because in my own mind I think of him as a 75% person. If Bond was in a bar fight and he was telling the story he would say it was him vs these two huge meatheads when the reality is it would be him vs a girl and teenager. Everything he says is with great intensity and sounds really exciting but if you use a 3/4 factor, then you’re probably closer to the reality. But he’s entertaining and we get along fine. There were 4 of us and the other person was a girl named Margaret. She’s from Kentucky and pretty nice. She’s a girl who can drink beer instead of the chicks who only drink hard alcohol which is a nice quality. She also says Fo Sho, dig it, and drinks Bud Heavy as I learned it’s called down South. Steve rounded out the crew and knows how to have fun. Once we made our way to the Subway he was sure to point out how much of a Colts fan I was because I didn’t have any Eagles attire. I really didn’t mind much and found it pretty funny. We got to the parking lot and finished off the case which I thought was a good job for an afternoon of drinking. We missed DeSean’s first TD but still got there within the first quarter.

I personally find the game more enjoyable watching it on TV but it’s all about the experience. I feel like I miss out on certain finer points and it’s difficult to tell the yardage sometimes. Plus the lines for concessions and bathrooms are insane. At one point I really had to pee and left at the perfect time before the rush hit the bathroom. So I’m waiting for my turn and the quarter ends and I’m standing in line just about to go before this massive line starts forming behind me. So it’s my turn and the stream isn’t coming so I’m just standing there for what seems like eternity and I’m getting the feeling the person behind me is wondering what the hell I’m doing so I just panicked and left without going. An extreme case of stage fright. So I sat back in the seat and waited till the line subdued and then went back at a less extreme time. Very nerve racking. The Birds ended up winning and the night went off without a hitch. No problems in any regard and the traffic was easy. All in all a good experience for my first Eagles game which was a long time coming. I got back at around 9, watched Dexter and then bit the dust as I was exhausted from drinking all day.

Quick fantasy update as I will not go undefeated for the 3rd straight week. Sam Levin knocked off my team in Steve’s league for control over 1st place. I’m up on Wagon in both leagues but neither is over as he has Monday night players out the ass. Should be close though depending on what kind of game is played. I did win in Bud’s league and will take 1st place after tonight’s game. I also made one bet on TB which proved to be a winner. Fun day all around.

Birthday

I find the attention that the birthday generates as mostly unwanted but it’s only one day a year so I just suck it up and deal. I didn’t really do many exciting activities, so I don’t have much to share. I went out to dinner with my family and their others which turned out pretty good compared to the direction I thought it was headed. We were going to go to Redstone in Plymouth Meeting but that was a 3 hour wait so we went looking for a place called Plaza Azteca and they have the wrong address listed so we were driving around there searching for that. Once found it proved to be a decent spot with a wait not so bad and everyone had a reasonable time. They even sang the birthday song for me which Nicole sadly missed. At night we just went to Mad River and everything was pretty much standard.

This is the biggest fantasy football week of the season for me as I have to play CK4 in both leagues and Sam Levin in my other league which is for 1st place in the standings. Playing Chad is like playing a raging bull (Jeff uses that) and fortunately Steve McGrath invited me to the Eagles game so I get to miss watching the games with Chad. Essentially this boils down to another day of getting wasted but I’m game. I felt pretty awful yesterday and even manually puked for the first time in years. That’s probably not true but puking is far and few between for me. As a Philadelphian it is said to say that I’ve never stepped inside the Linc so I can finally cross that off my list of things to do in Philly. Everything else is good though and I’ve survived another year and now get to feel older than I did. Oh boy.

Sports Emotion!?!

I think I just felt some emotion after watching the Sixers game tonight. If you know me you know that I have little emotional attachment to sports but tonight was different. Watching an 0-3 team get sent to OT on a miraculous 3 ball and then lose in OT was really sad. I’m not a huge Sixers fan but I hate having a team that’s 0-4 because it takes all hopes of any potential of the season if it starts to get worse. Even if the team starts 5-10 at least you know if they go on a run they can get back to respectable. 4 games without a win is starting to look bleak. I just hope they don’t fall further in the sinkhole.

I’ve gotten back to normal life today. The stock market has been doing well. Hopefully good news on SIRI earnings on Thursday will make me some money. Work has been busy and we’ve had a flurry of orders. I hit the gym today and got back on track after a 5 day hiatus. I only did 3 miles in 17:40 but I felt strong lifting so I expect to get stronger as the Winter nears. It’s one things that changes in my life. I start going to the gym more instead of long distance runs which allows me to add some muscle and not looking like a pipsqueak. So I’m in a good mood am expecting good things to come.

It’s kind of funny the amount of shoes I have, I feel like a girl. I’m looking around my room and I count 18 pairs of shoes. I have 2 pairs of sandals, 4 pairs of dress shoes, 2 bball shoes, 1 work shoes, 3 regular walking around shoes, 4 pairs of running shoes, 1 pair of cleats and a pair of golf shoes. At one point or another I do wear each and every one and they are starting to get to be a nuisance for the amount of space they take up. Another funny thing is I’ve fazed out collared Polo shirts for plain t-shirts. I decided that I don’t care that much about my look and I’ll go as casual as I can for everything. Shorts are also put away for the winter and my sweaters and sweatshirts are going to take over. I’ve developed a pretty decent long shirt wardrobe but I like to add some fresh gear each year. In college I used to always wear hoodies with no zipper but I’ve swapped over to hoodies with the zipper. I feel like they are more versatile and have a more presentable look than the degenerate drug dealing hoodie sweatshirt. I’ll probably buy a few more of those as winter progresses. I’m sporting 3 pairs of jeans and will have to add a new pair or two. It’s well known you don’t have to wash jeans as often so you don’t need as many pairs but I feel like I have a favorite pair that I prefer over the other two. I need to add another favorite so I can rotate two instead of a one rotation. This doesn’t mean I never switch, I just prefer not to.

Another change winter makes is that I like starting my car before I get in it. There is nothing worse than getting into a freezing car and waiting for the heater to warm up. Today I was freaking out because I woke up at 7:10 and the traffic gets bad around then and I knew I was going to have to face the cold in my car without any warm up. Tomorrow I’ll try to wake up before 7 so I can get a nice 5 minute warm up. These sort of events are paramount to having a good day. I love being under the comforter when it’s cold surrounding the room and you know that under the blanket is the warmest you’ll be for the rest of the day. I HATE getting out of bed in the morning knowing I have to brace for the cold. Obviously my shower walk is terrible in the cold and I could write a whole post about that if I wanted. I obviously prefer summer but I can get used to icy temps and make it work. I really feel like i was rambling throughout this entire post but I’m starting to get the feeling people don’t even care. People will read what I write because it’s better than doing other things that they don’t want to do. I also think people use this as a comparison to their own lives and see how someone goes about their days and what makes them tick. It’s sort of one sided for me as I constantly share and get no feedback but that’s the breaks. I have a few ideas for future posts so I’m hoping to make some progress in the upcoming days. I know I lack pictures and real entertainment but I’ll see what I can do. Till then.

CK4 Grabs Rebound!!!

We had a game at the new Ambler Y and I must say I was incredibly impressed with the new structure. I read that the old one was built on a 3 acre land and the new one was something ridiculous 28 acres. We were playing a team of guys who were reasonably talented basketball players but lacked the basketball fundamentals and had little team chemistry. Even with that being said we went down 27-10 to start the game. That was the case for the first 10 minutes of the game. With Jkash being out for the second straight game with a shoulder injury we were running 6 people. After their initial barrage we started playing an uptempo game and started filling it up. Ck4 and Jeff were doing some scoring and we were just outplaying them on the boards and getting open shots and offensive rebounds. We ended the half 36-30 with our lead. The game never really got much closer than 4 points and we held them off. Bud came up with the title to this post and I thought it was pretty funny because CK4 probably, ok he keeps his own stats so he did, drop 23 but it’s hard to say how much of the other stat lines he fills up. He did have an assist to me I must add, but I was probably 2-15 from the floor and 2-8 from the line. I’m not sure I’m looking at the rim when I shoot and it was pretty bad because I don’t really take bad shots but I just make easy shots look bad. We moved to 5-1 with 3 more cake games and one more tough one before the playoffs. I’m going to give a quick fantasy football recap and I know these aren’t that fun to read but I’m doing it anyway. I went 4-0 for the 2nd straight week and was high scorer in 2 leagues. I moved to hold the number 1 spot in Evan’s league, 2 spot behind Jkash in Bakes, 1 spot in Steve’s, and holding the 2 in Bud’s. This has been a blockbuster fantasy year and hopefully my good fortune continues.

As I’ve done in my last few Monday posts, I’ll review some TV that I watched. I thought Dexter was pretty good but the main thrust of the episode was unrealistic. I don’t mind too much though as I like the Lumen – Dexter relationship. Boardwalk isn’t really developing into anything anyone cares about but I’ll still give it a chance and just assume they will tie some good plots into each other. I liked the Eastbound but it was nothing special. I think Kenny is more likable when he acts like he’s doing the right thing. I really liked the owner of the Charros with the sword in the beginning. I still have to watch Weeds but it’s getting late and I’ll do that tomorrow.

BBall Actually SIRI

So we had our first loss in the Ambler Y basketball league last night. It was a good game throughout and finished in OT with us losing by 3. The first half was tight and I think finished tied. They started the 2nd half with a nice run to put them up 9 or so. We made a nice comeback due to some hot shooting from CK4 who I’m sure doesn’t mind me mentioning he had 16 of our 36 2nd half points. Evan had some key buckets too that kept it close. The other team had 3 really quality players who could shoot and had good moves. Bake would say his D got dominated but the guy he was covering was just a really good player. I should have played better missing some easy layups and going 1-5 from the line which is really embarrassing and could be argued cost us the game. It was very competitive and the league will boil down in the end to 4 teams who are are pretty equal in skill. A fun night of bball nonetheless.

So I wrote a post about the word actually and how I feel into a rut saying it. Now that I’ve been on the look out for the word I hear it non-stop from just about everyone. I’m not sure the word has any point to it and can be omitted from speech. Unless you are correcting someone, everything is actually. It’s just a buzzword to give the person time to think of something to say instead of stuttering with uhh’s and umm’s.

I also wanted to write that Sirius Radio stock has been given a shot in the arm and will soon cross the $1.40 barrier. I read all the haters saying how music apps are too strong of competition and Sirius won’t succeed but I’m pretty sure that it will be around to stay. Not only is the company finally turning a profit but this will allow for further innovation to the product. They receive revenue because it’s a subscription service and they also have channels that make money due to advertisements. Most channels are ad-free but some do have ads. I have 99 problems but listening to radio ain’t one. BOOM! Hit me. I just cringe every time I have to listen to AM/FM. It’s constant flipping around and generally when you flip all the stations have commercials at the same time. I just assume peons put up with the radio because they don’t know any better. I know it’s difficult for people to consider paying money for a service they assume should be free, but generally stuff you pay for is going to be better than the free product. They’ve added a Pearl Jam radio station devoted to their music which has my attention of late and Alt Nation is the best music out there. I know I own the stock and am a complete pumper but I believe this is a good long term play that people can invest a small sum of money and see decent returns.

Primetime – Week 6

The other team made us look a lot better than we probably are and this week was a total one sided affair. The score ended 28-0 but they had few scoring opportunities and no real offensive threats. Plus I think we had 2 picks on two plays that were QB’s by girls. To have a girl QB doesn’t make a whole lot of sense because the field gets really congested and if they don’t have great arm strength, they just lollipop one that is asking to be picked. We had 4 int’s in the first half by Evan, Bake, and CK4. Jkash went down for a set of downs after landing on his shoulder funny. We only had 1 sub but it didn’t even make a difference for this game. Ck4 even got to play QB for a few plays. He also displayed a typical crybaby attitude when we were going to let Jess Baker take some snaps at Q and instead of handing the ball over he childishly throws the ball behind everyone in disgust. Certainly not a big deal but at 27 to still be acting like this hysterical. Let’s also add that passing to girls isn’t part of his arsenal. I’ll never forget CK4 crying after a 7th grade bball intramural lost after Chris Duntzee made some miracle bs fast break shot because Trevor Stutz shot the ball with 5 seconds left instead of holding. I don’t think he’ll ever forgive Trevor. Bottomline though was the game was an easy victory.

My fantasy football #’s were dynamite this week as I had McFadden in two leagues. A brilliant move to bench Kenny Britt in my one league and deciding to play Maclin and TO instead was my one mistake. I did manage to sweep all 4 leagues though so I should have a 2nd in Steve’s league, a 3rd in the Schmidt’s league, a 2nd in Baker’s league, and The Turkeys will be in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd depending on Miles Austin’s performance. All in all I’ve been pretty hot in fantasy and almost know what I’m doing.

I watched all my TV for Sunday too and I’ll just keep the trend going with what I think about each episode I watch. Eastbound and Down I thought returned to its glory and I was cracking up for the first few minutes. The way Kenny and his Dad would lie to each other had me rolling. When he called Stevie the poon was also classic. When they said the kid Casper was 15, that was ridiculous because he looked 30. I like when they leave that Mexican baseball crap out of it. I watched Dexter and even though Julia Styles is annoying me I still think the show is good. The Quinn / Dexter rivalry reminds me of Dexter and Doakes. I think the side murder plots aren’t nearly as good as anything that has to do with Dexter. Boardwalk Empire was OK but I think the show is losing some luster. I think the show is good but I don’t leave episodes the way I used to leave after watching the Wire. Californication is starting up again and that’s always a good show.

I had 30 viewers on a Sunday which is an astronomical number compared to what I’ve been getting so that was encouraging. People seem to find this blog when I write about Manayunk and the bars so I have to keep that in mind when tailoring my posts. Bball is on Tuesday night and I’m going to Pittsburgh on Thursday for the first time in a few years. I probably have to get a halloween costume just so I don’t feel left out.

BBall

Quick basketball update. We were 3-0 moving into game four. The team we played is all black with one white guy. Like Chad would say, if one white guy is playing with a team of all black guys, he’s pretty good (he was just a good shooter). We went down early by as much as 13 in the first half but cut it to 7 at halftime. They made quite a few 3’s in the first half and we moved from a 2-3 to a 3-2 somewhere in that span. We opened the 2nd half with a few buckets and a few stops and basically evened up the score with 15 minutes to play. Without their 3’s, their offense was pretty bad and considering this was our first time ever playing a 3-2, I’m not saying we were playing shut down D. There was a period of time when Jkash picked up a couple fouls in a few seconds combined with some back talk to the refs. The Kashub’s used up 8 of the allotted 10 fouls which is typical of Jkash but unusual from the soft playing CK4. However, other aside from knocking his D, CK4 hit a big 3 with 2 minutes left that put us up 5 or so and even made a big block down the stretch. Our end game wasn’t great and they kept getting to the line for 1 and 1’s but fortunately they didn’t make so many. Bake played good again and we managed a 6 point win over a competitive team. Jess Baker and Mr. Baker, Sharon too, were all in attendance giving us our highest total attendance this season of 3. I expect a 33% attendance boost next week to keep us on the right track. We moved to 4-0 and this league is a better fit for us than the last league we played where we were 0-8.

Jkash and I also were considering seeing Jwoww but did the responsible thing and stayed in, so no good updates.

Finished the weekend

I scheduled a dentist cleaning at 9:45 today so I have a few minutes to write. If it was 5 years ago I’d probably be waking up at 9:15 and flying out the door to try to get there on time but today I’m up early, showered, brushed, and even flossed. I can’t decide if I should eat and then repeat the cycle but that’s what is most likely going to happen. I hate cleanings because she always flosses really hard and uses that pick with some aggression. I end up spitting out blood and then she tells me that I have to start flossing on the reg yada yada. I still give myself credit though for going every 6 months even though they have tell me I have to do a better job 2 times a year for the last 10+ years. I’m going to introduce a concept that was new to me til Friday but after I gave it some thought, and after what I just wrote, it almost makes sense.

On Friday night at the bar a guy was telling us about “game-layer” which essentially turns life into a “game.” The description is that you receive points that you can in turn correlate into discounts and maybe only a status symbol. Stores supposedly give out challenges that if you complete them, then you get points. I’ll give an example of how I foresee this happening on a more practical scale. The dentist is tired of you having shitty gums so they offer you points every time you floss. When you get to a certain # of points, you get a quickie from the assistant. Something along those lines is how I see the point system working. As CK4 would put it “the million dollar question” is what are these points backed by. Once asked that I think most conversations stop. However I wouldn’t mind tallying point’s for every beer I drink and having a number displayed above my head of how big an alcoholic I am. I think it’s pretty interesting honestly. A link for the interested.

Some football talk real fast. I went 3-1 in my fantasy leagues but the one loss was by the Turkeys who relinquished overall first place in the league. It was a short reign at the top of one week. All my other teams will win though and that puts me at 4-2 in three leagues and 4-1-1 in the other and amongst the top in every league. I’m usually not so good at fantasy football so I’m happy to buck this trend for at least the year, as long as all my teams don’t self-destruct.

A quick betting paragraph. I went into the weekend up 150 bucks from the week before which, and I have been keeping close track, is an accurate total for “this football season”, notice in no way do I say I’m a lifetime winner, in fact quite the opposite but my records aren’t so sharp. Anyway, my two blog picks both covered (KC and Pittsburgh) and I also run lined the Phillies which won too. I did however lose the Colts, the Raiders, and the Cowboys. Fortunately I had 50 on the colts, 75 on the raiders, and 35 on the boys for a loss of 160. The games I won yesterday I had 131 on KC, 50 on Pittsburgh, and 75 to win 103 on the Phillies for a net total of about 100 dollar win yesterday combined with a big day yesterday to put me up roughly 350 for the weekend. So that puts me up 500 for the season finishing week 6. Considering I’m playing with profit and hate losing my own money, hopefully this money should carry me for another couple of months depending on good bankroll mgmt. I know it’s a lot to ask.

I didn’t get to watch any TV because I feel asleep early but I have a lot of catching up to do today. Some bad news, our bball game is on Tuesday night and I will probably have to skip JWoww. I think I’ll get over it. Not much else to exciting.

Rare Sunday Post

Whenever I’m able to post on Sunday, especially Sunday morning (it’s 9:34), it must mean that I didn’t have a late night on Saturday night. Now considering I was passed out by 7pm, that led to this rarity. I guess I should start with Friday night. CK4 beat me in beer pong 4 in a row and then we met Dooley and his friend at the Bayou. Nothing was really happening at the Bayou so we went to the Brew Pub and that wasn’t that great so I wandered off to Mad River by myself. As I recall the place was ridiculously packed. Things started to get stranger though and all the details aren’t really in my memory. I met Mael and he was there with some friends and I must have gotten in a cab to go home with them because at 6am on Saturday morning I woke up in place I’ve never been before. I sort of remember being a dick to this one kid but I can’t really remember the exact details. So I was pretty confused at that point and ended up walking back to Green Lane which was only about 10 minutes away. We had football games at 11 am so when I woke up at 9:30 I realized that I had two wallets in my pocket and I must have grabbed the wrong one when I was leaving the random house. I ended up returning it later in the day but still a bit bizarre. So that’s what happened to me before our football games.

Primetime was playing a double header and we had a good amount of players with subs and all. Nobody, except for Jkash, was prepared for Tee Shirt time so that idea isn’t going to take off. The first team seemed like they were going to be good but I think we ended up winning by 2 scores. There wasn’t really too much of interest other than we won. The second game was against the Hill who is pretty much the team that plays every season in every single sport, so they were pretty experienced. They had a fluke TD at the end of halftime that hurt us and they ran good routes. They spread their girls wide and their one girl had great hands for a girl. Bottomline was they won by one score on the last drive of the game. Our defense didn’t come through as they marched down the field on the last drive. There were no amusing stories.

So after that Gusto and I started drinking and playing poker. I bought a Sam Adams variety pack and to anyone who likes beer, this is one of the best variety packs I’ve ever had. Seriously, Sam Adams as a brewer gets a 9 out of 10 and the only reason I don’t give it a 10 is because I don’t like giving out 10’s. Problem was they are usually higher alcohol contents and I probably had 9 or 10 in a 5 hour period and I was ready to pass out. I probably could have rallied but it wouldn’t have been good for anyone. So I have no good stories from last night but I feel fine now and will go to they gym once my laundry finishes up. Tanning is later. So passing our early does have it’s advantages. I feel good now and can do things during the day other than just sit there. I plan to read some more of my book and then write a few entries that I have been stirring up.

I’ll add one sports betting paragraph. Dooley was big on Pitt so I made a stand and put 131 dollars on the Panthers and they actually came through. Then I put 75 on the rangers at +122 and put 82 bucks on Iowa which hit too. So I went 3 for 3 and 4 for my last 4. Now that I’ve established myself as credible (yeah right…) I will give my picks for the day. I’m riding Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs at +5. I also think the Steelers at -14 is probably going to happen because Colt McCoy is going to learn what it’s like in the NFL against a top D.

Tee Shirt Time

Jess Baker, nice comment on the last post, the tee shirt time would be a pretty funny trademark to open every football game with. Huck, if your on a heater, share the wealth and just let me know who to take. I’m pretty much just monkey throwing a dart at a selection of games. That addresses my comments as I wrote on Sam’s wall, everyone gets anxious to read the comments on posts but people don’t like taking the time to write them, so I obviously will address them when people write them.

There have been some developments in Green Lane lately which I hesitate to bring up but I think are too funny not to. Evan has a co-worker who isn’t so well versed in the English language and whenever he asks Evan how to do something and he gives him the answer, he responds with “that’s what I was thinking.” Obviously this isn’t what you were thinking if you didn’t know how to do it. So this has pretty much taken our comments by storm and for whatever reason this line can find a barrel of laughs time and time again. Basically if I post questions like why the fuck would you do that, the right response is always “that’s what I was thinking.” Just give it a try it’s pretty hilarious.

The Shee and I also find the Pauly D “Oh Yeah’s” hilarious. Anytime during football and there’s a big play you just erupt into “OH YEAH, BIG PLAY, OH YEAH.” The voice obviously has to accompany it but this is also hilarious. Spontaneous “CABS ARE HERE,” are also acceptable. Jwoww is coming to Mad River next Tuesday and I’d expect a pretty big turn out. It’s only Jwoww but still, it’s going to bring a huge crowd. 2 of the 3 bartenders I know who usually serve me cheap alcohol are no longer employed there so I’m on a new mission to find new friends who will serve me cheap booze. It’s been a while since I’ve had this issue but paying full price at Mad River can get pricey so I need to work quickly to find some cohorts.

To some not as entertaining news, I watched Weeds too which I thought wasn’t too bad but nothing really happened in the episode. I feel like they are just kind of stringing along a season with nothing really happening. It’s entertaining but not necessarily anything I’d call a good show. I thought Boardwalk Empire was kind of weak with not much really going on. I hate to say it but this show better start developing fast because I feel like the action is a bit stale. Dexter was decent but I wish they would have strung along Boyd to another episode and maybe gave him more abilities than just a one and done kill for Dex. The sideplot with the heads seems sort of dumb but I’m not going to make any sure thing comments because this show seems to get better as it goes along. I also watched Kenny Powers and they just missed the mark a little bit. He’s still funny and I love how he refers to the people as villagers but it doesn’t have as good as a plot as the first season. That’s it for TV and my fantasy team was 3-1 this week and I have +.500 records in all 4 leagues which is pretty good. I’ll be away for Wed and Thur so my updates may not be there, but my traffic has been weak anyway so I’m not sure too many people will be very concerned.
