Fantasy Football Recap – Week 1

My teams went 2-3, but the good kind. In the two wins I had the most points scored in the league and in two of the losses I had the 3rd and 4th most points scored only to lose to a higher total. The 3rd loss was pretty ugly. That’s really what fantasy football is all about, maximizing the point values in each league. I really only botched one league where I could have won but I played the Chiefs D against the Bills, which I thought I was being smart but if I just played my drafted D, I would have won. I do have some thoughts though about Week 1.

  • I did a brief overview of my waiver wires and there are a few TE’s who catch my eye as worth picking up. There are a few QB’s too but I probably wouldn’t waste my waiver wire position to get them, just see who becomes a F/A after the waiver period.
  • I expect to see Steve Smith have a big year. Cam Newton threw for more total yards in one game than Brady did for the span of career until last night. If Steve Smith is on your waiver wire, obvious time to put in the selection for waiver.
  • Drafting Sebastian Janikowski is one of the smartest moves I make in the draft. Everyone says how all kickers are the same but that is completely false. Rather than take a player who is going to sit on my bench in the 11th round, draft Sebastian and watch him drill 63 yard fg’s to end the half. He becomes a more consistent player than a RB.
  • A few guys who I think are going to be busts are LeGarrett Blount, Dwayne Bowe, Knowshon Moreno, Shonn Greene (again) and anyone on the Colts. Too early to tell? Perhaps, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
  • Some great late round picks turned out to be Steve Smith, Jordy Nelson, Kenny Britt (no surprise), Welker, Tolbert and Reggie Bush. I think these guys will be good all season long.
  • My final thought deals with the waiver wire position. You want to be #1. You don’t want to waste your spot on stupid picks. A stupid pick would be putting your spot in for Cam Newton this week. My plan is to wait and pick from the remains as F/A and keep my position. If I see a guy who I think needs to be picked (like Steve Smith), I’ll submit it. It’s very important to have a high waiver wire position. I know this is only week 1 and now would be the time that it matters least but when guys start getting injured, it’s important to get the back up for much needed points.

Being Boring

I didn’t go out at all this weekend and pretty much just did nothing of much interest. I paid 5 bucks for True Grit which I found pretty slow and boring. I actually fell asleep at the end and turned it off without really caring what happened which is unusual for me. I woke up on Saturday and went golfing with the Shee at Shannondell which is found in Valley Forge. Neither of us played particularly well and I chalk this up to playing down to the course. At 49 dollars this price was a bit steep for its value. After that we played some mini golf with the Wevs who was back in town and I once again reigned supreme at Mini Golf. After a big win down the shore vs Bake, I came back against the Cohens like nothing had changed. After that Shee and I went to Harrah’s which I documented earlier. I went to sleep early on Saturday and woke up early on Sunday. I’m just about the 3rd book of Game of Thrones which has been occupying my time. I also started Mad Men which is fairly interesting.

Obviously Sunday is fantasy football so I will add a few thoughts. I’m in 5 leagues this year and it looks like I will go 2-3. I beat the poop out of Evan with a Stafford, Calvin and Kenny Britt combo. Gusto is going to lose to me because I had Steve Smith and Calvin against him. Bill Schmidt laid the smackdown on me and even though I probably will finish with the 2nd highest point total for the week, a loss is a loss. Those were my Yahoo leagues, all of which were good showings. My two in ESPN were a complete debacle. Mendenhall, the Chiefs D and Vincent Jackson all let me down in the one league and the other was a no show by Chris Johnson, Owen Daniels and not playing Steve Smith. I still have a shot but 4 guys totaling 70 points is unlikely. I was pretty happy with my teams though and think that this is only one week of a long season.

Wyncote Golf Course – Holy Heather!

On Friday, Bake, the Shee, Ck4 and myself all decided to head to Oxford to play Wyncote Golf Course. This course holds some different invitationals and is also the place they hold High School districts in the Eastern PA area. It was about an hour from where we are in PA and the drive is pretty slow if you take US 1. We probably should have gone the blue route most of the way but we were following the GPS. The Shee managed to get a speeding ticket on the way there so for anyone reading this, you’ve been warned. At a ridiculously cheap price of 41 bucks at 11:24 on a Friday, we were pretty pleased.

The course was crowded but we still managed a little over 4 hour round. We played from the white tees and I think that measured something around 6,000 yards. The picture below is going to represent my biggest peeve with the course.


Whether you call it fescue or heather or cocksucking motherfucker, it’s everywhere. Probably on every hole you’ll find this high grass that gobbles up your ball. I don’t really blame the course for this. If you keep your ball on all the fairways and are close to the greens, you’ll be fine. Start to stray though and you’ll have a round like I had Friday. In total I lost more than 12 golf balls. This amounts to 12 penalty strokes and makes your score balloon. This makes the course frustrating and I was knee high walking through the grass all day. Nevertheless, I still think this is a good course at a tremendous value at 41 dollars. I wish I would have played better but I think I was about 108. The heather even had Bake come undone for a hole carding a 9 on a par 4 which is uncharacteristic. Ck4 managed a 10 when he was hitting from heather to heather and the Shee played the best out of all of us keeping the ball on the course. The course is well kept and the holes are challenging. I would like another shot at it but I wouldn’t make the hour drive to do so.

Life Update

I’m going to be terminating insertnamesucks.com. I don’t have the motivation to tend to two websites properly. I have enough trouble updating this one. However, instead of letting that site ride off into the sunset, I’m going to update some of the posts and post them on this blog. To the 3 readers of that last website this will be a bit redundant, but I hate letting work go to waste. I might change the domain name of that last site and focus on some really specific category and dedicate a blog to that. We’ll see.

In other news, I went on a long run yesterday and did manage to run 10.5 miles. The pace was at 6:40 mile pace through 8 and that was a pretty good indicator of what shape I’m in. I probably finished the last 2 in 7:30 to 8 pace which was pretty lackluster but I’m about 5-10 lbs over ideal running weight and I can feel it as I get tired. Plus my shorts started digging into my waist and the lining was killing my thighs. Too much info I know. I haven’t officially signed up for the half yet but there are still 18 days to go. I feel like I can put in some good runs between now and then and be ready for it.

I know some people don’t care about fantasy football but some probably do. I had a second 10 person, non ppr, draft last night and I drafted the all-pro team from 2005. I picked Rivers over Manning which may have been a mistake. I gambled on Chris Johnson and took McFadden in the 2nd round. Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd, and Miles Austin make up my WR’s. Owen Daniels at TE and the Packers D. I got Tim Hightower and Rashad Jennings as RB back ups, and took Carolina Steve Smith and Lance Moore as WR back ups. I think this was a better draft than last night and that stems from having the 6th pick instead of the 9th. We’ll see.

Fantasy Football has Arrived

I had my first draft last night and somehow find myself in 5 leagues this year. It’s a bit overwhelming but I do find it fun so I’m not complaining. It was only a 10 team league and I thought I made out OK considering I had the 9th pick. At 9, I passed on both Michael Turner and MJD and went with Andre Johnson. Coming back Rashard Mendenhall was still around so I snagged him. I don’t see either of the aforementioned back having big years and I’m just not going to pick a RB just on name. This may have been a mistake but its what makes fantasy football interesting. I got Vincent Jackson in the 3rd round and Gates in the 4th. I know most people don’t draft Gates this early but he has the potential to be a top 10 leader in points among RECEIVERS let alone TE’s. If I didn’t get him then, someone else would get him. Romo was my next pick and I took Fred Jackson as my other RB which I wasn’t happy with but I chose him over Ryan Mathews, Beanie, and Benson. I got Brandon Marshall and Joseph Addai next and I think choosing Addai over Ryan Grant might have been costly. I did manage to get James Starks as another possibility at RB. The Jet’s D, Santana Moss, Lance Moore, Rashad Jennings and Pierre Thomas rounded out my team. There are certainly some question marks at RB but I felt like I got some depth.

I also watched the new Entourage on HBOGo. Not the one this past Sunday but the actual new one and it was horrible. It’s the second to last episode and the whole show is a mess. The Sloane-E thing is boring as hell, Vince’s love for the Vanity Fair writer seems so lame to conclude a 8 season series. Turtle becoming a millionaire because of Vince was a giant “who cares.” The whole show was pretty bad and I think it needs to be put to rest.

Cape May National Course Review

CK4 and I took off work on Friday to drive down to the shore to play Cape May National. It was about an hour and a half with no traffic from Philly. The rate was $65 bucks and we teed of at 1:15. Twilight rates are 50 bucks after 2:30. My first issue with the course was the prices for drinks, food and range balls. 6+ dollars for range balls and 3.75 for a hot dog. We got there at 12:30 and so hoping to get off early but the course was pretty crowded for a Friday midday. We hit some balls and practiced on their enormous practice green which is a real treat because you can chip on it. The staff was borderline incompetent and for some bizarre reason they have a shortage of golf carts. As people finished 18 they would drive to the starter, he’d wash the car (for no reason) and than send off the next group. We had a 1:16 tee time and teed off about 15 minutes late knowing that it was going to be a slow round.

Aside from those little nuisances the course is in fantastic shape. Green fairways, greener greens and this is even with a lack of rain. Another point to note was that there wasn’t even a 90 degree rule and your cart couldn’t leave the cart path which makes the round a tad slower. We played from the blue tees and there is even a set of black tees. The blues played tougher than the whites as it added about 600 yards and was right near 6,600 which makes for some long holes. I won’t go hole for hole but this course really makes you hit good shots. The holes are challenging and as our playing partner Lou said “you’ll be making a lot of donations to the golf course in the way of golf balls.” This proved true as I think I probably lost a half dozen balls but found another dozen. We shot 98 and 101 which wasn’t so hot but if you aren’t keeping the ball straight you are going to be adding strokes to your score. I actually was at 38 on the back coming to hole 18 but got a 9 to blow it up. After 18 we played a few more holes but it’s a pretty draining course. On one of the par 5’s on the back I had a nice drive up the chute and than a 4 iron that had me within 15 feet for eagle. Naturally I flew it too far past, missed the birdie, and than missed the par put. I hit the ball pretty well but still too inconsistent to put up any good number. Overall I’d give the course a 9 out of 10 in terms of difficulty and fairness but my real rating drops to an 8 with everything considered (cart path, value). I think at 65 bucks it’s reasonably priced for a shore course.

Bella Vista Golf Course Review

Ck4 and I drove to Gilbertsville to play Bella Vista. We’ve played here once before so I had an idea of what to expect. We payed 47 dollars for a 1 o’clock tee-time. They wanted to charge me $65 but I said their website was broken which allows you to play twilight at regular hours. We got off without a hitch and played from the blue tees which were 6,400 yards. The starter was pretty friendly but the guy at the register was giving me attitude because the site wasn’t working and he didn’t want to charge only $47. Anyway, we started off with an 8 and a 9 on hole one which was pretty sad. It’s a long Par 5 with and we both got off the tee but I flubbed two shots due to a tough side hill lie and then flew one out of bounds into white stakes. I dropped up by the green immediately tarnishing the round. After that I struck fire going 3 over for 7 holes and doubling 9 for a 43 in. Ck4 was 54. I was putting drives in the fairway and the holes were playing driver/wedge. The back nine opens with a par 5 which I flew a 325 yard drive down the middle only to flub the approach shot for my first real bad shot of the day. My tee shot on 11 was errant and I flew on OB on 12. I got it together with a few pars and a bogey until 16 where I tee’d off into someones house. I closed 18 with a double for a 47 on the back. Ck4 was 43 on the back for a nice turn around.

That put me at a 90 from the furthest tee’s on a pretty tough course. We finished the round in 2 hours 45 minutes for a round of speed golf. I think we played the back in a little over an hour with no one on the course. My main gripe for the course is lack of yardage markers. They have a 150 stake on every hole and I guess they feel that’s a good enough indicator. The 14th is the signature hole at the top of this post. It’s pretty intimidating. They didn’t let us play again after we finished and wanted to charge us 25 dollars for a replay which was annoying. As long as you keep the ball in play, this course is pretty fair. I thought the course was in very good shape and the value at 47 dollars is about right. Time of play was tremendous but I doubt it’s always like that. I do recommend this course though as one of the nicer courses I’ve played. Challenging as well. 8.5 out of 10, edging up to a 9.

Hickory Valley Golf Course


CK4 and I played Hickory Valley on Saturday afternoon. I went to Dick’s on Friday and bought a new set of irons and a new Driver so this was my first time using the new set. The Pro at Dicks’s was really helpful and got me hooked up for what I considered a good value. Anyway, the course is out in Gilbertsville which was about a 45 minutes drive. There are 36 holes and for a course which is in pretty good condition, it was unbelievably priced at 26 dollars with a cart. We were on the “ambassador” course which is the lower end of the two. The course is pretty tight and the holes were pretty average. We played from the tips which was still on 6300 yards. This being the first time I played with my driver, I couldn’t get off the tee at all and it proved difficult to score. Ck4 hit the ball well for a 90, I was 97.

The real fun began after the first 18. It was 4 o’clock and drizzling and we jumped on the Presidential course. This course is usually $36 after 3 but free worked for us. After 18 holes, Ck4 and I were pretty warmed up and ready to go. I would recommend this Presidential course. The holes are way more open and very well laid out. Through the first 18 I was hooking driver after driver but I got it together and started hitting some bombs on this 3rd nine. We played 1, then 11, 12, 13, then played 2-10 playing 2-3 twice because the group ahead of us was slow. At one stretch CK4 and I put on 7 pars, 2 bogeys and a birdie in 5 holes. We didn’t have to wait at all and it was a lot of fun. I’d really like to see what 14-18 looked like but I really thought it was a fun time. The ambassador course is probably a 6.5 and the Presidential an 8.5. If you look at if from a value standpoint it’s easily a 10 out 10. Even the time wasn’t terrible as it took us about 4 hours 15 minutes and we had to wait almost every hole.

Philadelphia Eagles “Dream Team”


I just watched a segment on ESPN and although it’s nice to be the center of the spotlight, it’s weird seeing the Eagles labeled as “the team to beat”. I laughed out loud when Vince Young said we are the dream team and the reporter declared it as the biggest boast ever from a back up QB. So the Eagles have signed Nnamdi Asomugha, Ronnie Brown. Jason Babin (again), Vince Young and Cullen Jenkins and now they are shoo in to win the Superbowl? Comparisons are being made to the Miami Heat. Am I missing something here? I will say in this post and mark my words “Mike Vick will not have as good as year as last year.” Somehow last year, after being in jail, Mike Vick was able to hit targets. He couldn’t pass worth a lick on the Falcons. Was it a fluke or did he actually improve after being in jail? DeSean is one hit away from the end of his career. Shady had a break out year and I’d be amazed if he was as good. Being in Philadelphia it’s hard not to just jump on the band wagon, but I really try to be a realist with my observations. Now this one isn’t racist (ok maybe it is) but black quarterbacks don’t win Superbowls. I know it’s not a fair because Trent Dilfer won a superbowl and if I were the QB they still probably would have won. The fact that there is all this talk about how good they are is going to be their downfall. Something bad will happen, the players will get frustrated, team chemistry will collapse and there’s another season down the drain. Don’t say I didn’t tell you.

Lederach Golf Course Review


On Sunday afternoon, Bake, the Shee, CK4 and I played golf at the Lederach Golf Course. Their twilight was at 3:30 so we payed 45 dollars each to ride. The course seemed empty but we were waiting pretty much every hole. That being said the round wasn’t particularly slow and we finished in 4 hours or so. We played from the green tee boxes which were in between white and blue much to the chagrin of CK4. There are a few things about this golf course which make it unique. The first thing you notice is that the fairways are huge. This is not a course you are going to lose a ton of golf balls on. I think I lost 2 the whole day and I was spraying balls all over the place. This aspect is certainly favorable to average golfers. The next thing to note is that these greens are normal greens. The undulation is pretty significant and the greens are huge. This led to a ton of 3 putts for me.

From the golf end of things, this course really has it together. The price is right, the course is in good condition, it’s challenging and I thought pretty fair. A couple of not so good things are 3 dollar Gatorade. 2 water fountains on the course which provide luke warm water and not a single cooler with water. This was absolutely the worst part about the course and to go to the trouble to have such a nice course and slack on the water is not looking out for the players. Ck4 said that there weren’t any paper towels in the bathroom either. The bar seemed nice and clean though and specials seemed good. I’d give the course a sold 8.5 out 10. I’m not complaining about the price or really anything at all about the course, just some minor flubs in my mind. Just to add, I finished with a 98 and that included a 10 on a hole where my pitching wedge snapped in half and a 9 on a hole where my 3rd shot on a par 5 would have been green side but instead was 3 feet out of bounds and I re-hit like I was supposed to.
