Buck County Country Club Golf Experience

3 of us played at Bucks County Country Club today. It was pretty hot at about 90 degrees and the course wasn’t too crowded. They told us just to show up without a tee time to give you an idea of how crowded it was. At $60 dollars with a cart, I think it’s a bit overpriced. This was their normal rate and not twilight. A 45 dollar price tag would seem more appropriate. They have range balls to hit for free which is a nice amenity. The starter was kind and let us tee off on two instead of getting stuck behind a group of 8 which allowed us to finish in about 3 and half hours. We actually ended up playing 1 to finish off our 18 and than played the other 8 to finish 26 holes for the day. They didn’t say anything but I feel I earned that for 60 bucks.

I finished the day with an 87 which was pretty good. I was 41 on the front and only had one double. On the back I carded 2 triples and a double. I only lost 1 golf ball on the day and the course is pretty forgiving. Some fairways are narrow but usually an errant drive just hits some trees. I probably used driver on 12 holes and a 2 iron on the other two. We played the blue tees but they really weren’t much different than the whites. On my good drives I was going driver 8 or 9 iron into the greens so it really isn’t that long of a course. I thought the course was in pretty good shape for the lack of rain and played fairly. I would give this course about a 6.5 out of 10. If it was priced right I’d probably give it closer to an 8.

Forum

You’ll see that I added a forum at the top of the page. With all the participation that I get through the comments to my posts, I don’t exactly expect to get much out of this. It’s more of something to have but you never know, it might be a hit. I’ve created a couple of topics but feel free to create your own. Know that at least I’ll respond.

In other news, it’s the weekend. I got a bit too bombed last weekend and I need to keep it in check this weekend. I’m considering doing the Sea Isle 10 miler next weekend so that would give me some motivation not to get wrecked this weekend. I also plan on playing golf a couple of times this weekend. We are probably going to play Riverwinds on Saturday and Lederach on Sunday. It’s just CK4 and I on Saturday. If anyone reads this and is interested in playing call, text, or email me.

Fantasy Football Studs Part 2

A few days ago I gave my thoughts on 3 of my top fantasy players for the 2011 season. Here are 3 more that will fly a little under the radar.

Jimmy Graham – TE
jimmy graham
In the last 7 games of the season he averaged 36 yards per game. Not spectacular but in his last 3 games he had 4 TD’s. He’s 6-6 and weighs 260. Drew Brees is one of the best QB’s in the league and he has underachievers in Colston and Moore. Graham is going to be the starter and I assure you he will be a quality TE this year.

Kenny Britt – WR
Kenny Britt
Yes, he got arrested during the off season. He plead not guilty and probably won’t be reprimanded because it was during a “lockout.” Can Kenny Britt play football? Even with Kerry Collins at QB, let’s look at the numbers. He averaged 72 yards per game and had 7 TD’s in his first 7 games. Yes this includes a 225 yards, 3 TD game vs the Eagels but it still shows the potential. He was injured and he missed the next 5 games. I think you know he’s not playing 16 games when you draft him for one reason or another. He finished the last 4 games of the season and averaged 85 yards per game and caught 2 TDS. If he falls into the later rounds, he’s worth a gamble.

Miles Austin – WR

I really like Miles as a player on a team with limited WR’s. People may think Dez Bryant is the next best thing but I just don’t see it. Romo and Miles have a strong relationship that Dez Bryant isn’t breaking up this quickly. Miles is consistent and his numbers are deceiving because Romo went down in Week 6. In the 4 games with Romo at QB, Miles averaged 118.5 yards a game with 2 TD’s. The rest of his season was still pretty good but I promise you he will go later in drafts than he should.

Better by Comparison

Sometimes things and people benefit from being better by comparison.  Here are a few examples.

Brandi Passante
Brandi Passante looks good
Brandi from Storage Wars is a great example of better by comparison. She benefits greatly from the fact that there isn’t another girl on the entire show. She’s relatively attractive, say a 7, but considering the fact she’s the best thing to look at on the show, she becomes a 9. Good face, skinny, pretty hair and a bitchy attitude, she gets it done. I guarantee there are guys who are drooling over this girl as they watch the show. I also want to add that I know the reason for Storage Wars popularity, it’s the intrigue and curiosity of what’s inside these random storage units. People LOVE what they don’t know. There is a sense of excitement from purchasing a unit that you don’t really know how much it’s worth and you look like a genius from being able to pick out a good locker. People eat up the unknown. Darrel, the gambler, is the thriftiest, worst character on the show. Plus they overvalue everything. They put a used golf bag at 50 bucks and you can buy brand new ones better than that for 50 bucks. Sorry I’m watching the show as I type this and expressing my frustration.

Kevin Love
Kevin Love
This is a little unfair and doesn’t fit exactly into this post, but being the best player on the Timberwolves is like being the most popular kid in the Glee club. Is he as good as his stats say? Doubtful. He is better because he has no one else on his team who is any good. He does it all on a bad team and he looks like an all star. What happened to Chris Bosh’s numbers when he went to the Heat? For accuracy, the Timberwolves were 27th in the league in FG% and 1st in O boards. Also note that their PACE factor (an estimate of the number of possessions per 48 minutes by a team) is #1 out of all 30 teams. Kevin Love played 36 minutes per game and is the Timberwolves. He looks good but is completely OVERRATED.

Facebook

Fairly obvious but they have no competition. Show me another social website that has 700 million users. It doesn’t matter if Facebook is good or not because you are going to use it no matter what. Even if another social website had a brilliant interface and applications that can suck your dick, you still wouldn’t join because you’d be all by yourself (as you are with google+ now). Status updates on Facebook are just annoying at this point and it’s whole chat system makes me feel completely back in middle school. I get advertising spammed and flooded with virus links. Facebook makes me feel like a digital stalker sometimes. It’s really not all that great but there isn’t anything better, therefore, it’s amazing.

Fantasy Football Studs for 11′

I feel like I’ve earned at least a tad bit of credibility for my performances last year. In 4 leagues I took 1st in two leagues, 2nd in one, and 3rd in the final one. I obviously got lucky in a couple with key pickups like Brandon Lloyd and LT, but in one league I drafted Apete, Jamaal, and Darren McFadden so get at me dawg. Obviously all this information is my own and there are plenty other better sources than me so don’t view this as the end all, just what I think.

Jamaal Charles
Jamaal Charles
Yes, I’m going to take him early. Ideally you want the 10-12th pick and you take Jamaal with your first pick. He lead the league with an avg of 6.4!!!!!!! yards per carry. The next closest guy was 5.6. If he gets more carries, which he should, he’s the #1 RB in the game. I’m being unbelievably stupid divulging this information but this is going to be his even bigger breakout year. To boot, he was 14th in receptions among rb’s which is great for ppr and 9th in total yards. The guy is a stud and worth a 1st round pick. He drops to the second round and you’ve got yourself a huge steal.

Darren McFadden
Darren McFadden
1st round pick? I don’t see why not. 1,157 yards in 13 games last year. 47 catches for 507 yards (6th among rb’s in yards for 13 games!). 10 tds! Yes he’s on Oakland and morons talk about sharing time with Michael Bush . WAKE UP! He’s young at 24 and ready to break out with a better season than last year. Avoid injuries and you’ve got a stud. Drops to the second round and you snag him up.

Roddy White
Hot Roddy Flipping
Led the league with 115 catches which is dynamite for ppr. That averages to 7 points per game PLUS any yards he gets. He got in the end zone 10 times and he’s Matt Ryan’s (a up and coming ELITE QB) favorite target. This is really a no brainer and the question really becomes how early do you get Roddy? I’d probably pass on him until the beginning of the 2nd round and I’m taking him with any late 2nd round pick.

I know I threw out some pretty cupcake picks but I’m not sure everyone really understands how good the players are I highlighted. It’s not until someone puts information in front of your face do you start to believe. I’ve always had the philosophy of never drafting a QB with the first round pick because the difference in great QB’s isn’t as great as the RB’s. Why did I win the league last year? I had 3 RB’s in the top 10 who didn’t get injured, simple as that. I can even back this up with some data from our league last year. Notice what round the manager drafted a QB and what place they finished:

Round QB was drafted 1st – 3rd place (picked up Vick btw)
”                 ”                 ”   2nd – 9th
”                 ”                 ”   2nd – 6th
”                 ”                 ”   3rd – 5th
”                 ”                 ”   3rd – 8th
”                 ”                 ”   3rd – 11th
”                 ”                 ”   3rd – 10th
”                 ”                 ”   4th – 2nd
”                 ”                 ”   5th – 5th
”                 ”                 ”   6th – 1st
”                 ”                 ”   6th – 4th
”                 ”                 ”    7th – 12th

People who drafted QB’s in the 4th, 5th, and 6th round took 4 of the top 5 spots. AND the guy who got 3rd didn’t even use his 1st round pick and was vaulted by Vick’s performance which shows he didn’t even need his 1st round QB pick. This did not happen by accident.

I’m going to give one more tip that I shouldn’t give. Picking up injured or suspended players in later rounds is a brilliant idea. For instance, CK4 got Roethlisberger real late and after the 4 game suspension, he became his starting QB. I picked up Sidney Rice and Santonio Holmes last year, who didn’t play til at least week 10, and by week 16 not only did I have my core of RB’s, I had another 4 WR’s to choose from.

Paying attention to diamonds in the rough and consistent performers is way smarter than going for sleepers who don’t pan out. Drafting rookie RB’s is the biggest gamble of them all by the way and in my opinion ill advised. I’ll just throw out a few more names who I’m probably going to stay away from MJD because of Jennings and injury, I would have said APete but with McNabb at QB he should be just fine and Shonne Green who just never seems as good as the hype.

Jay Cutler is a complete douche

Look at this guy in this picture and tell me his not an asshole? Now if Jay Cutler were in this room with me now would I be telling him he’s a douche? No. He’d kick my ass and he might even be a really nice guy. Am I saying he’s a douche for calling of the wedding? Nope, because she’s probably a nightmare and he realized that putting up with her for the rest of his life was something he didn’t want. However, this picture just inspires this post. I can’t look at this guy and think he’s a nice guy. He’s is the poster boy for the term douche bag. I don’t even like Kristen Cavallari and haven’t seen one thing she’s ever done but I know she probably has terrible taste in men. This poor girl was probably so excited for this wedding. I’m sure she doesn’t need to work and probably spent tons of hours planning and this guy says no thanks. Sweet little cutie is probably crying in her room day and night but my guess is she’s probably better off.

Just to make this post a little more interesting. He is an average QB. He’s 34-34 as a starter. He completes 60% of his passes and has 104 TD’s to 79 picks. That’s a 1.35 TD to pick ratio. Brady has a 2.53 lifetime TD/INT ratio. Also Brady in 2010 was sacked 25 times compared to Cutlers 52. Is it fair to compare him to Brady? Obviously not, but still the guy is just average and should get an attitude check. Do I have any base to call Jay Cutler a douchebag? No it’s just my viewpoint and has no merit. Take it accordingly but he will never play on my fantasy team.

Golf

I played 53 holes of golf in the past 2 days. Ck4 and I played Pinecrest on Friday and Raven’s Claw on Saturday. Nobody was on the course and we just kept playing. I shot a 92 at Raven’s Claw through 18 and another 45 on the second 9. I was high 90’s at Pinecrest. One interesting thing was that it takes me about 20+ holes to make a birdie. We played from the blues both days and that makes Pinecrest significantly more challenging. It was pretty hot but fun.

The blog has been getting a lot of random traffic from the Kate Upton Video and the hot pole vaulter. Google really works in mysterious ways. I haven’t been updating much but than again, I haven’t really been doing much. This is really just a post just to post. I watched Young Guns which is an 80’s western with Kiefer, Emilio, Charlie Sheen and even Lou Diamond Phipps, about the tale of Billy the Kid. It was decent. I have nothing else to write.

Afterwards

Phil’s 5k was tonight. I probably placed about 20th of 700. I ran a 17:45 which should equate to 5:50 miles or so. I felt pretty good throughout the entire race but I’m just not in good enough shape to run a formidable time. If you look at the top 100 time for the race, I’d say about 10 are over the age of 26. The bottom line is that I’m not getting faster. I did out sprint a female in the last 50 meters to say that I wasn’t beat by a girl which should give me some credibility. A 5k goes by fast compared to longer races and I will admit that’s about as good as I can do.

After the race I decided to go to the bar. I had one shot of rumplemintz and about 6 beers. It messed me up pretty good considering I didn’t eat dinner. I ate a roast beef sandwich at Kildare’s but I was pretty much spent after beer number 6. Don’t forget these beers are pints and they are at least 5% abv. I was/am pretty drunk as I’m typing this but I figured people appreciate posts in different forms. I’m listening to Jim Croce by the way. Songs in order Operator, Time in a Bottle, I got a name.

Tc’s Challenge – Self Evaluation

You can score yourself at home and than challenge me to a ten event decathlon if you think you’re better than me. Scoring is based on a 5 point scale, 5 being the highest.

Basketball – 3.5 – Since 3’s average, I consider myself a bit better than average. I think a 4 is being a bit generous as I can’t shoot all that well. I don’t play much anymore and just have no touch. I understand the game better than most though and I can run the floor, rebound, and play defense. Better than average, but not amazing. I potentially could be a 4.5 if I played more and could hit a jumper. There is no way I could ever deserve a 5, even with all the practicing in the world. Steve Nash is 6ft and is a 5. I can’t think of many other whites who are my height and a 5 in basketball.

Tennis – 3 – Not much to say here. Ck4 and I have been playing about once a week and I’ve improved considerably from just starting. A new racket certainly helped. My serve is little to be desired and I have enough trouble just keeping the ball in play but with my athletic ability, I think would deserve an average rating. With practice this could easily rise to a 4 as I find tennis to be pretty routine.

Ping Pong – 3 – I’ve been a 4.5 before though. Back in college we used to play everyday and I was good. This is a pretty simple game that you just need to play to get better. It’s completely a feel game. If you can start slamming balls that cross the net too high on a consistent basis, you can beat any simpleton.

Foos Ball– 3 – Another game that I used to play a ton in college but haven’t touched since. Pretty foolish to put on this list but to have the skills to pass back and forth between your front line and to foos opponents, I think I deserve at least an average.

Running Events – 4.5 – One of the few things that I technically “practice”. Anyone who can run 6 minutes miles for multiple miles deserves a better than average rating. I haven’t time trialed myself in a mile recently but maybe sometime this week I will to give you an idea.

Golf – 4 – I think I’m an above average golfer. Not to mention I keep score properly so I actually get legit scores. I can drive the ball 300 yards and with a little practice I’m pretty confident I could be a high 70’s, low 80’s golfer consistently. Golf is really a practice sport that just requires time. Anyone who has decent hand eye coordination can play golf.

Beer Pong – 1.5 sober, 4 drunk – When I play pong sober it’s like trying to throw a marble into a dixie cup. I have no feel at all. Once I start getting a few drinks, the idea of thinking how to shoot the ball fades away and I can start zoning in. I was better in college when I used to play every week but now it’s just something to do to pass the time. I’m decent but nothing extraordinary.

Quarters – 4.5 – Another game I’m better at when I’m drunk. I’ve rarely found too many people who I THINK are better than me in this game. People claim they are the best but when I’m on, I win. I’ll concede I’m not very good when I’m sober.

Video Games – 2 now, 4.5 back in the day – I pretty much stopped playing all video games on all systems. I’ve had my moments though in many games on many platforms. The obvious front runners for what I played the most are Bond and Perfect Dark, Starcraft, Warcraft, Diablo and Soldier of Fortune. I played all the other Resident Evil type games as well but the above mentioned consumed thousands of hours I’d guess. I was way better than average in all those games too. Now, I stopped playing because it was truly a complete waste of time. No physical exercise, no real benefit, nothing really. Maybe some hand eye.

Poker – 4.5 – I’m confident I’ve played more poker than 98% of the population. Aside from the real grinders and super intelligent, I’m the next level below. My cash game record is profitable and I’ve made some deep runs in tourny’s that potentially could have netted some big paydays. Problem was it occupied a lot of my time and I wasn’t making enough money to make it truly worthwhile. However, I still have the experience and I’ve played thousands of heads up tournaments, which should give me an edge over most. Even though I’m pretty rusty now, I’ve put in some time to learn the game.

*Chess – 3 – Event 11 is a game I find particularly fun but no one ever wants to play. Once again I dabbled with Chess in college and learned a few opens but people on Yahoo would whoop me which lead me to quit. However, I think I’m probably better than most people who just have never played. This can be substituted for any of the above.

Well everyone, there you go 36/50, that’s 10 events and I welcome challengers. The purpose is for me to show you my self evaluation, have you do your self evaluation, and than prove to you that, most likely, you aren’t being real with yourself. I could add a day of drinking in the event list and that would be a fun one. That would really be a competition I’d welcome challengers.

Back to Form

Just a quick “what I’ve been doing lately” update. I’ve been really annoyed with some nagging injuries lately. I’ve had this burn on the top of my middle finger for 2 weeks now and you’d be amazed how everything just happens to come in contact with it and it stings like a wasp. My toe nail on my big toe is falling off but it’s not completely off, so it hurts when the nail get lifted up but can’t fall off. My mouth has an annoying sore by the gum line which just popped up. I also have had terrible stomach cramps since after the 10k which I can’t explain and have finally started to go away.

Just to comment on the mud run 10k because people seem to be impressed. A 10k is 6.2 miles. My time was 43:30 which averages out to 7:15 miles approximately. I’d guess I’m in comparable shape to when I ran a 5 miler back in February in 29:38 which was 5:56 pace. In the 5 miler I got 26th place to give you an idea of the competition for this 10k. Now the 7:15 is much faster than an actual 7:15 pace. Each obstacle is just adding time because, for the most part, you aren’t advancing, just either stand still or slowly moving forward. I count at least 11 obstacles with the mud pit wasting at least 30 seconds. My estimate is that it was around a 6:30 pace and the rest wasted on obstacles. This isn’t an incredible time and most people will look at a place rather then a time. I’m not nearly as wowed by my performance as others.

I’ve been entertaining myself in a multitude of ways. First off, I finished the Soprano’s Season 2 on DVD this weekend and I really enjoy the show. It just seems real(er) to me. The story lines and the characters just have an appeal and I’m going to continue on with season 3. I’m caught up with True Blood, Curb, and Weeds as well. In my mind, none of these shows can hold a candle to the Sopranos. The shows are just old and the plots are just reaching. Curb has been my biggest disappointment because the situations just feel so forced. True Blood has lost it’s mind. At first it was just Vampires and now we have necromancers, wolves, panthers, and fairies. Weeds needs to stop because it is mildly entertaining but it’s ruining its reputation as a good show. Also, I’m about 100 pages into the second book of Game of Thrones called “A Clash of Kings.” I find it to be well written and keeps my attention. I’ll give a review when I finish.

Phil’s 5k is coming up on Wednesday so I’ll participate in that. I would be happy with anywhere between 17:30 and 18 minutes. I was 17:56 last year so that will be something to improve upon. I haven’t really been doing much else but watching TV and movies. My hand is really preventing me from most activities. I forgot to mention I watched The Empire Strikes Back and now just have to watch Return of the Jedi to feel complete. I can’t figure out why Princess Leia is so important. She’s the princess of a planet that doesn’t even exist, what does she rule?
