Obligatory Football Post

Week 4 is in the books except for one matchup against Ck4 in Bake’s league. I have LeGarrett Blount and the Tampa D vs Josh Freeman and he is up 7 points. I give myself a 75% chance at winning this game. Now in the past I’ve had some run ins with CK4 that didn’t play out my way but it’s not nearly as bad as he’d like to think. I traced our head to head stats all the way back to 07′ and we’ve met 9 times. The overall heads up record is 4-4 and I won in our Championship game last year that I stupidly decided to split the prize money so essentially we tied even though I doubled him up. He’s like Little Mac from Mike Tyson Punch-out and I’m always like Soda Popinski. You would think I would have a huge edge because of my physical superiority but for some reason he just never goes down without a fight. I should be in good shape come Monday night as long as Blount doesn’t put up a doughnut. Assuming I win that game, I’ll move to 4-0 in that league. In the other leagues I’m going 2-2 and there is no Monday night miracle. It’s sort of annoying because the 2 wins come in leagues I’m already winning in and the losses in leagues I’m losing in. I’ll move to 3-1 in two leagues and 1-3 in the others. I lost by 2 points in one game and Morrison will blow me out in the Schmidt’s league where I just can’t buy a win. I’ve been rolling in the other two and Hetrick helped me out this week basically not putting up a winning score. All my teams were solid again and with 2 “mistakes” being made where I played Denarius Moore over Steve Smith and Hightower over McGahee. I’m basically in 1st or 2nd in 3 leagues and close to the cellar in the other 2. It’s still early and I won’t give up. Luck is involved in fantasy football and you just have to stick with it sometimes.

Betting wise I proved pretty strong this weekend. With a little more luck, I almost hit a 7 team teaser. I hit the first 5 in the 1pm games, won the Giants and Denver +19 broke it up in the last game. It was 20 to win 200. I bet on the Saints and the Giants (thanks Shee) which covered and then made a nice 50 dollar bet on the Ravens which won to give me a 90 dollar profit for the week. This puts me almost exactly even for the season and gives me a little bankroll in Bodog. Because I’m a degenerate gambler (I haven’t been), I’ll probably bet on the Colts +10.5. I know they stink but Tampa Bay isn’t exactly firing on all cylinders on offense. It just seems like a weird line to me and I think everyone will jump on Tampa Bay which is why I like the Colts. Evan will most likely beat me in Fanduel for the 3rd week in a row and it’s starting to get a little humiliating. The defenseive points were insane and his 35 from the Ravens sort of blew me away.

Primetime Football Week 3

Short a few guys we entered week 3 2-0. Down the Shee and Kope, plus Madison and Evelyn; Bud, Becca, Amber (yes Amber) and a girl who I wasn’t introduced to filled in. The game started off with a big play on 4th and short to CK4 for a nice first down pick up. After that it was another romping. New girl caught a very nice catch for a TD for our first score. Our defense held and than we just kept piling it on. Becca had a nice pick, I had a pick, the defense was pretty average as usual but it just didn’t matter. Jess Baker had an acrobatic catch, JKash with some nice grabs in the middle, Gusto made some tough ones. Baker *threw 0 picks the entire game and it was 35-14 after half time (they may have had 7). Ck4 even got to play Q for a little while hitting me on a long bomb that I didn’t get in the end zone robbing us both of 6 fantasy points. There was little entertainment and the only person I failed to mention was Bud who made some nice stops early on D and almost got his face taken off when CK4 threw a bullet at his head 2 yards away in the end zone. Amber also commented how she didn’t know what she was doing and people trying to help her would tell her “don’t get in the way.” Or maybe it was “try to get in the way.” I don’t remember. 3-0 with a tough match up against the Hill next week.

NFL RedZone – Get it!

NFL RedZone

If you like football and you have cable, you should watch all of the NFL games on RedZone. It’s 7 bucks a month for the Sports and Entertainment package and there isn’t a better way to watch football. For whatever reason whenever I get into a fantasy football conversation I always ask the question, “You watch the games on RedZone?” If the answer is no, you aren’t talking to someone serious about fantasy football. You get to watch action from EVERY SINGLE GAME WITH NO COMMERCIALS! Plus it’s always the most exciting part of the game, when teams are going to score. Where else am I gonna see footage from the Carolina – Jacksonville game and know that the game was underwater and that’s why the stats are so far below what they should have been. Just looking at a stat sheet won’t show you that. Plus reviewing stats on NFL.com is so atrocious that I have to address this issue. I don’t want to watch a video that takes 10 seconds to load about the game when I click the game link. All I want to see when I click on the game center is the stats. No video, I shouldn’t have to click “analyze”, just show me the stats. Without RedZone, this would be my only method of knowing what is going on in other games. However, this way I can actually watch the scores and see if they happened by a fluke play or if they guy is seriously skilled aka Torrey Smith.

I have to take this paragraph and explain from a technical end of things how professional and polished the red zone production staff has gotten. Scott Hanson will reference obscure players names from every single team seconds after the play has happened almost instantly. He’s probably more in tune with the game than the commentators calling it. The way the top fantasy performers numbers show over top the screen is a great addition. The fact that there is 0 downtime throughout 6 straight hours of broadcast makes Scott Hanson the hardest working man on Sunday in my opinion. I’m sure the crew that backs him up deserves a ton of credit also. Top notch production, A++++. These guys have it down pat.

I’m from Philadelphia and if I had to choose a team to root for it would be the Eagles. I watched RedZone over the Eagles game this week. It really wasn’t even a difficult decision. 1pm has become my favorite time of the week waiting for RedZone to start. The buildup to the greatest programming on television is worth the price of admission. It’s 7 dollars a month! If you are anything like me, you are paying less than 2 bucks a week to watch 6 straight hours of football at the highest level that has ever been produced. Stop being a penny pincher and enjoy the experience that is football. If I ever have to sit through another game on Sunday with commercials, I’m going to be disappointed. Football isn’t the same without RedZone and I would really appreciate it you agree with this post, liking it because this rave review should at least convert 5 people to RedZone.

Lets talk Football

I know much how Laura loves these football posts. I’ll start with how Primetime performed in the Manayunk sport and social league. We had a double header that started with a game against a team that was supposedly 2-0. Baker at the helm moved the ball on the first possession for a TD and the team never really looked back. Bake was spreading the ball nicely to different targets like Kope, Ck4, Jkash and Gusto for gains. The defense wasn’t especially good but this team wasn’t either. I’m not sure what the final score ended up being but it was a bloodbath. An interesting injury during the game was when Anna deflected a ball with her hand and it ended up bending the finger backward. I heard it wasn’t pretty but I never got a good look. *Here’s a good look.

The 2nd game was a little closer than it should have been. Kope had 2 really nice picks to start off and that brought his season total to 4. Big Steve also recorded the first sack of the season towards the end. The game got to a 1 score game after they caught our defense sleeping on a female play where they used the girl as the QB and surprised us. On a big 3rd down play, Bake through a great pass to Kope who got it down to the one yard line. Barring any mistakes, this game was wrapped up. HOWEVER, Bake forced a pass to Kope and it ended up being bounced up and picked. This gave the other team a chance to score with :33 seconds. They failed and we won the game by a score to improve to 2-0 and well on our way to defending the championship.

My fantasy games are basically over and I will go 3-2 this week. Kenny Britt going down will effect my future but this was a pretty good week for me in terms of scoring. I picked Gronkowski off of basically every waiver wire and am reaping some benefits. I also have RUN DMC, Calvin and Wes Welker on a couple of teams so this week bumps my scores nicely. I will lose at the hands of a Schmidt for the 2nd time in a game that I put up an average score but just got beat by a team that couldn’t miss. 3 of my other games were me putting on a complete beating. I scored the most points (so far) in 2 of the leagues for weekly totals and pretty much never trailed. The other game I lost is with a team I think is good but just can’t seem to score enough points. I don’t mind losing in games when my guys do well and I just get beat. But games that my team puts up a stinker make me feel like I’m mismanaging. I’ll be 3-0 in one league, 2-1 in 2 leagues, and 1-2 in two. With Britt going down, two of my 6 stars this year are going to be injured (Charles and Britt) for possibly the season. Miles won’t play this week and Roddy, Run DMC and Jimmy Graham are all making me right so far. Britt and Austin were 1-2 in receiving points coming into this week and McFadden will lead all rushers after this week. Ok, Laura, I’m sure you didn’t read this far but this post is over.

Future Ambler Fall Bball Champs?

Well that’s going a bit overboard but we did have our first game Tuesday night for the Fall League. We added two new players in Kope and Mike and said goodbye to our sniper Evan and my brother, both of whom relocated. The first game was against a team that wasn’t very good and there was an unusual turn of events 4 minutes into the 2nd half. Kope threw the ball off their player and the far ref said it was our possession. The other player seemed to think we convinced the ref it went off him and he cursed off the ref. The ref than told him to stop giving him the death stare and he did it again. This got him 2 T’s and he got kicked out of the game. We were only up by 6 at that point but after that little incident, we ended up winning by more than 20. We were pretty rusty for the first game of the season but hopefully we’ll improve. For Bud, Casey, CK4 and myself, it was virtually the first time playing since winter ball.

Our team is pretty interesting in the sense that we are all 6ft tall and pretty much play the same position. Ck4 and Mike are basically both scorers and good shooters. Kope is a good addition because he’s athletic and can help us put the ball in the basket. Bake is our most well rounded player because he can shoot and direct the offense. Casey gives us some quickness and handling that we lack. Bud is solid and won’t turn the ball over or take bad shots. As long as I make my open shots I can be efficient which is a nice way of saying that I can help out by not screwing up. We also have a 6-6 guy who I’m not even going to say he’s on our team until he shows up to a game. This should be an interesting year and hopefully we can make a run in the playoffs.

Rock and Roll Results

Race Results

I finished the race in 1:22:12 which I think is respectable. That averages to a 6:17 pace. I think it’s interesting that my second 5k was faster than the first but you can see I really didn’t have any strength in the final 3 miles. 275 out of 16,000 though isn’t too shabby. I’d rate my conditioning about a 7 this year and I just didn’t put in enough long runs to really feel like I gave it my all. These past two years have been pretty weak from me in terms of race results. I feel like I put in decent effort but just never enough to really see my potential. Oh well.

Jamaal Goes Down!

In what is obviously the biggest news story of this entire year, Jamaal Charles is going to be out for the season with an injured knee. This is dire news for all fantasy owners who picked Jamaal with their first pick. Fortunately for me, my favorite player is on none of my teams due to picking 10th and beyond in almost every draft. I want to remind everyone of the 6 players who I said were going to be big this year. McFadden, Britt, Austin, Graham, White and obviously Jamaal. All of these guys are big names (aside from Graham) so it’s not that spectacular but the first 3 guys I named are tops in the NFL. I’d argue McFadden might be THE BEST RB in the game this year. Britt is playing out of his mind and Austin’s 3TD’s last night is no joke. I’m even a little heart broken for Jamaal because I know how much he loves the end zone and this injury is going to prevent him from getting there this entire year.

In my 5 football leagues I have already won 3 games outright. As long as Hakeem Nicks doesn’t go for 22 in a PPR I will win a 4th. I’m not even sure he’s playing tonight. The one game that it looks like I’m going to lose is against “tall guy” who I know reads this blog. I’m up 20 points and he has Bradford and Ahmad Bradshaw going tonight. It’s always favorable to be ahead and not playing catch up but barring anything unusual, these two guys should get 20 points. That would give me a 4-1 record for the week which is obviously pretty good. My teams have been putting up big numbers with a key pickup from the waiver wire with Gronkowski last week. All my teams are pretty solid and I haven’t been plagued by any injuries. So far so good.

Evan whoooooped me in fanduel with good picks of V-Jack, F-Jack, J-Best and M-Staff. They had about 20 TD’s each and my picks were all pretty lousy except for Ryan Fitzpatrick. That cost me 5 bucks but I’m game for another shot week 3. Consider that a challenge. You’ll also notice the worst bet made in the history of bets taking the Chiefs +8.5 yesterday. I haven’t been betting much and that pick looked pretty lame brain.

Philly Rock and Roll Half Marathon

I woke up at 6:45 feeling good and ready to run 13.1 miles. I wasn’t really hungry and didn’t feel dehydrated whatsoever. I ate 1 cinnamon pop tart and drove to the race which started at 8. I met up with my mom and sister at my corral (2) and basically told them I’m just looking to finish. Now, I looked back at some of my past results and was 1:24 last year and 1:19 both years before that. My expectation was somewhere between 1:20 and 1:30.

I started the race slower than previous years with the plan to not die after 10 miles. I crossed the 4 mile mark at 26 which was even a little faster because of the delayed start. I felt pretty good throughout the beginning and ran a 6 minute mile between miles 4 and 5. I can’t remember my exact time but I hit the covered bridge, the 9 mile mark, still feeling like I had some juice in my legs. At this point of the race I had probably passed hundreds of people and was only passed by a few which was an advantage to starting slow. At mile 10 I started to lose pace a little bit and people started to catch me. I sort of finished the race in a relatively slow pace but it wasn’t a crawl like last year. My clock time was 1:23:30 and I expect that to drop by 30 seconds to a minute. I felt pretty good and was just happy to finish. I’m glad it’s over with for another year.

Sunday’s are one of my favorite days of the week because of football, specifically for the fantasy aspect. I also am play the Wevs in a Fanduel match which should also add some excitement. I’ve been going back and forth between Vincent Jackson and Santana Moss. I have Gates on the team and just think Moss is going to have a huge game. With Marshall and Andre Johnson as my other WR’s, I’m sort of torn. I also couldn’t decide between Fred Jackson, Joseph Addai and James Starks. Lots of mediocrity. I’m also in agreement with Evan in Dallas -3 and I took the Chiefs +8.5 because I think they just weren’t ready for week 1. On to football.

Fantasy Football Secret – Targets and Carries

I’m not nearly as good as I think I am at fantasy football but I still have my own theories on what makes a player good. I have to laugh when I hear people before the season begins telling me how good a guy like Benjarvus Green-Ellis or Mark Ingram will be. The key to good fantasy players is carries and targets. It’s what makes an average back like Cedric Benson (25 carries) a must start. Now take a guy like the “law firm” and notice he only had 7 carries with Danny Woodhead getting 14. You just can’t play Benjarvus if that’s all the carries he’ll get. Javhid Best had 20+ carries this week and as long as he stays healthy looks like a decent back. A line like 20 carries for 40 yards is way more appealing to me than a guy who had 5 carries for 60 yards. Consistency is key to fantasy football. Guys who put up donuts will lose you football games. Guys like Benson who touch the ball that many times are going to be more consistent even in their bad weeks. Targets are the same idea. Receptions are a good indicator of how often a receiver gets the ball but a target is more important because it shows how much the QB is looking in his direction. This is why Steve Smith was a good pick because the pre-season report was saying how often Cam was looking to give him the ball. This is just my advice to try to find consistency. A guy like DeSean seems like a good fantasy player but he’ll have 3 catches for 150 yards some games and 0 catches other games. Wes Welker consistently catches 5+ passes for yards and TD’s. Consistency is the key to winning and if you want a fair evaluation of how good your back might be, look at how many times he’s touching the ball.

Novak Djokovic is from another planet

His head is longer than it is wide. This guy is a super freak. Every time I look at Novak, I think about the Swedish guy from this clip.

This guy could get so much pussy that it’s unheard of but he probably acts just like the fool in this video after a match. Look at this awkward martian!

This is the best tennis player in the world?!?! He just seems so foreign that anything he does is far out. He is one of a few people who sits in a pressurized egg to recover from matches. I seriously think that he might be an alien beamed down to take over the tennis world. Apparently he has a super hot girlfriend named Jelena Ristic which makes his life all the better.

To sum it up, he is owning life.
