Bieber Fever – NBA All Star Weekend

Notice how I’m learning a thing or two about titles and SEO. If that title doesn’t bring in the mass traffic I don’t know what does. I was actually pretty impressed with Justin Bieber and his bball skills. For being such a major draw I’m not sure where he learned how to play basketball. Not that he’s amazing or anything but he can play the game. You’d also think as a 27 year old male I’d have major discontent for Bieber but he really doesn’t bother me that much, actually not at all. He’s just really talented and gets a ton of attention but he seems to handle it well.

In bizarre fashion I’m sitting in, not drunk, on a Friday night I have the time to blog and dissect a pathetic attempt at entertainment which was the celebrity basketball game. Watching overweight, aging players like Mitch Richmond and Jalen Rose isn’t that exciting. Let’s not forget the slew of B list celebs like Trey Songz, Michael Rappaport and Rob Kardashian. This was just a complete nightmare of a game and why on Earth is AC Green taking mid range jumpers and trying to pad the stat sheet. The Rookie-Sophomore game was moderately exciting but it’s not a serious game so who really cares.

In between the game Jeff and I were watching this show on ABC which was a hidden camera show where they were trying to set people up. One scene had underage kids asking random passerbyers to purchase them alcohol. Maybe 10 out of 100 agreed and it was pretty stupid. Then they had a guy who had aids at a diner serving food and they set up actors to act like they were appalled that a person with aids was serving food. This was staged to try to see what type of reactions they could get from the people in the diner. Essentially it was like Punked except it was supposed to be serious since it was on ABC. The show was a complete joke but I still watched it. Now that’s an entertaining Friday night if I’ve ever seen one.

Frostbite 5 Miler

Tomorrow at 9am the Frostbite 5 miler will start. I probably drank a bit too much on Wednesday but I don’t think that should effect me for Saturday. I’m feeling pretty good and did a short run today to confirm that. I’m looking to go sub 30 minutes and anything better would just be a bonus. The weather looks like its going to be beautiful which is awesome for me and my aversion to run in the cold. Based on last years results that should get me about 20 of 1500. I had a pretty lackluster year last year and hopefully this run will start me off on a good note for the season. I have maybe 6 runs on the agenda this year with the Broad Street and Distance Run being the main ones with some 5k’s tossed in there. I’m in good shape from a speed perspective but I think I could use some longer runs in my repertoire to increase the endurance. I am healthy and expect to turn some heads with a nice time at my old age. I’ll bring a camera to get a picture or two.

I still apologize for the ads on the side now but I don’t think they are too distracting and if anyone finds them annoying, please let me know. The benefit of the ads is that if I am able to make some money for doing something so easy and stupid, I’ll probably post more and try to build the most traffic possible. I still flounder when it comes to specializing in something. When serious sites try to build traffic they focus in on creating content. My content is so random that it really doesn’t fit in anything. Hence my problem. I’m just hoping to be entertaining and hope that works.

Oh Rachel

I had a feeling taking a Facebook comment, and then calling them out, from someone I know was a risky move. Fortunately Rachel isn’t serious when she calls my blog shitty. To quote Jess Baker “she laughed and said what a prick…” Personalizing blog posts is a way to develop readers though because the reader can assume that I have the ability to put them into a post at any time which creates interest. It’s all in good fun though and I’m probably just jealous because love isn’t winning in my life. She said it was a “SLOGAN” (LOL!!!!!) but I’ve never heard it before. Is it famous? Who said it? Who uses it? I would also like to point out that the insult of “prick” is not used nearly often enough. Also Rachel, don’t write on my wall, that could have been done by a private message. EVERYONE doesn’t have to know. Just kidding. No I’m not.

To answer JKash’s question on why I didn’t post about basketball on Tuesday is a simple response which was summed up perfectly by Bud. We started they game up 4-0 and they went on an 84-37 run. Not only were they bigger but they shot the ball way better. They also played better defense and I don’t think we would beat those guy once out of 50 tries. I think we could maybe get them once in a hundred. I airballed two foul shots which was just as embarrassing as the 40 point loss. There you go Jkash, happy now?

Ambler Bball

Team Baker moved to 3-0 after a hard fought win on Tuesday night. We played the team that we beat in the first round of the playoffs in the fall league. They beat us in the regular season when they had one of their better players but we won when he was absent, he was there on Tuesday. We played really well as a team and even though I don’t think they game ever got further than 7 points, I don’t think we ever lost the lead. Our offense was carried mostly by our best weapons in Bake and Ck4 but everyone contributed. We were up by 7 or so at halftime and ended up winning by 7. Play of the game goes to Casey who got burned by his man on D with a minute 30 left and we were up by 3 or so, I picked up his man and he was going hard to the basket. I didn’t want to foul so I did my best to contest but as the ball went up Casey jumped out of the building and pinned the ball against the backboard. We recovered the ball, went up two possessions and won the game. We move to a combined 6-0 in both leagues and are playing the best basketball as a unit since we started. I know most don’t really care about bball but I figure I’ll make a post.

Bball and Rut

We played a Manayunk Bball game last night w/o our usually best player, CK4 would resent that, and ended up winning by double digits. Chad probably fired up close to 25 shots but he’s obviously our best offensive weapon so no one really cares. I think that’s one thing about our team and maybe the reason why we win, we just let our best offensive players takes the shots. There’s no complaining about not getting shots and everyone just goes along swimmingly. Jkash even busted a J right in some big oaf’s eye which was a rarity (no offense). He even fouled a guy who was coming down into the lane and the guy’s comment was “I think he raped me…).” Once again though we were out sized and came away with the W to go to 3-0 in that league with a game on Tuesday in the Ambler league.

In other news, I don’t have much going on. Just to give a brief update on things and what I’ve been doing. I’m halfway done the first season of the Soprano’s and I’m really enjoying it. If you have the 2nd season, and want to help me out, I will pay to have you ship it to me because it’s running $31 bucks. I’ve also been playing a ton of poker with mixed results. I fancy myself pretty good at heads up and jump started my bankroll that way. Then I won a 12 dollar 45 man on Saturday night at 3am after coming back from the bar. I have about 400 in my account and am really just waiting to breakthrough with a multi-table tourny win. I got 36th of 617 and have made runs in bigger fields but just can’t walk away with the W. Playing sort of makes me lazy but I’ve been hitting the gym and am still active. Until I go busto again, be prepared to have me periodically update my poker situation in the blog.

One unusual thing that has happened to me is that Dunkin Donuts raised their price of the combo I get to 4.17 instead of 3.86. Most people would just move on but this throws a huge monkey wrench in my daily routine. I like to have change in my car for various reasons but what this new price is doing is making me use a quarter instead of getting .14 cents back. I don’t have an unlimited supply of quarters and it’s starting to worry me that my change supply is going to dry up. Things like this are what really bother me. Now you might say, use a 5 dollar bill and get the .83 cents and problem is solved but it doesn’t work this way. If you have a change amount <.15 cents, you should try to use change so you don't have to make the cashier count out the change and fill your pockets with nickels and dimes. The sad thing is that every single day this event transpires, it's going to bother me until it gets to the point that I'm just going create a dept with rows and rows of .17 cent increments. Problem solved.

I’ve also been listening to a lot of Anberlin and I just think that this might be the best band I’ve heard in a long time. How can you tell if a band is good? If you play their CD and you don’t have to skip songs because they are all good. Gusto gave me all their music and I just start it and let it play through. I may post some of their better songs to give my readers a taste. That is all.

1st Bball Game – Ambler League

Coming off a championship run in the Fall league we had high expectations for game 1. We didn’t have Ck4 so our offense would be a little light but hopefully by outplaying the opposition we would get the W. At no point do I think either team had a lead by more than 6 points. We were pretty bad but they handed us the game on a silver platter. They missed so many foul shots at the end and screwed up royally by calling a timeout they didn’t have and giving us a chance to tie the game. Bake must have hit clutch 3 after clutch 3 to keep us in the game and we found ourselves in a 2 minute OT. We missed our first possession and sent them to line where they went 1 for 2. On ours, Jeff gave me a pass that barely made it through and I incredibly (the layup wasn’t incredible it was the fact that it went in) made a lay up to get us up by 1. Then they took a bad shot and I can’t remember exactly what happened but they were inbounding the ball, down 1, with 6 seconds left and this complete doofus threw it right to the guy I was standing next to and I hit it away and we gained possession. We were the better team but they outplayed us. If it wasn’t for Bake draining something like 7 threes on the night, we’d have been toast. Very lucky to come away with the victory and this team undeniably needs to practice.

Blog Traffic

Blog traffic is through the roof and it’s getting absurd. I had 90 unique visitors and they are arriving from countries like Brazil, Turkey, France, and Indonesia. Suri Cruise isn’t even the reason, people are just being directed to this site. I’m grateful that I’ve increased traffic by more than 100% in 3 days but there’s absolutely no reason for it other than Google is sending random people my way. It’s baffling. I write 400+ entries and have never had more than 40 people visit the site in one day and now we’ve doubled traffic because I wrote one thing on celebrity’s. At this point I feel like I’m at the mercy of Google. I have no idea what it’s looking for and it’s up to me to satisfy its needs. Talk about pressure. I guess the one thing I can learn though is that whatever I was doing for the past 400 entries wasn’t nearly as gravitating as my past few. I also vow to not put ads up unless I can achieve 500 unique visitors in a day. If that becomes the case, I think I’d be foolish not to earn some money for my efforts.

As an ongoing project, CK4 and I like to come up with ideas that can potentially make a lot of money. We’ve nixed his ideas of a walking ladder and a dollar menu for pets, and have tried to focus on a more realistic approach. The one that was thought up tonight is called forever-life. We are going to concoct an elixir that will prolong your life years. We are going to charge a steep price tag for how essential and in demand this product will be. Little do the people know that they are just going to be buying some sham but with expert marketing and some smooth talking, all we’d have to do is nail a couple of billionaires who are looking to try their hand at a 5,000 dollar gamble for eternal life. All you need is a few hundred gullible people and I’d be happy to live my life on an island far away from the world.

In all seriousness though, a fantastic idea that Yahoo or someone should implement is to play out Week 17 in fantasy football. The difference being that you can challenge a person and obviously through internal betting amongst themselves, you play out a fantasy game instead of the season being over. Yahoo could even charge for this and I guarantee people would be doing this all over in their leagues. Give me Sam Levin one more time in my ESPN league and I’d pay 5 bucks to run it again with us wagering on the side. I think it’s a good idea.

I won’t go into my driving range that’s also a bar or my fatheads that are all porn stars. I sometimes wonder if I had nothing to do to entertain myself and I just locked myself in a room with a pen and paper, what other ideas I could come up with. Everyone knows that the majority of start ups fail but I think if I ever came up with something that I thought would work and I had the passion to make it work, I could be profitable. It has to be something I’d want to do though because no one wants to spend time doing something they don’t like.

Quick betting update – I lost 60 on the Falcons last night and won 25 on the Vikings tonight. I have a little over 100 bucks in my account and that makes me up +600 for the season for a unsuspecting profit in a sports betting season. I also collected from 3? leagues in fantasy football and should have been 4 if Steve would have paid out the 2nd place finisher like any normal league. Stocks like Agen and Siri are also leading the charge into a new year. Good luck to all.

Nothing Doing

I went to the gym yesterday and ran 5 miles in 29:15. The funny thing about treadmills is that they aren’t all the same. LA fitness specifically has one turbocharged machine that is labeled with a 95sp or something like that and it lets you speed the machine past the usual max of 12.0 mph. Not only is this machine the fastest but it’s also the most stable. If I can’t get this one particular machine, then I’m usually not too happy. Point being that I’m not really sure if that time is legit or not because it’s a treadmill, but I’ve used a lot of treadmills and the one I used is the most consistent and best, so I give that time some credibility. I also want to document it so if I ever look back at where I was at 27 physically, that’s not half bad for an old man. I know I’m a treadmill snob. I’ll get on the machine, start it up and if the console shakes or the cup holder makes noise, I get off and find a new one. I also sweat more than any individual in the entire gym. After I get done with the treadmill, it looks like it’s just been through the car wash. It’s amazing too that not once have I ever fallen off or ever felt that I was near falling. I wonder what the maximum speed is that I can lose footing and keep myself up with my hands if it came to that. Enough treadmill talk.

Holiday break is upon most people and it’s a fun time to spend time relaxing, reading books, watching movies, and staying fit. Instead of all those enjoyable activities, I usually spend mine buying cases of beer, getting drunk, trying to pick up girls, and then dealing with hangovers. Some girls recently ask me if I’m a player and I just have to laugh at the accusation. Yes I do go out fairly often to the bar to attempt to pick up females but my success ratio is pathetic that I can’t possibly be a player. This next break though is a good time to go out though and I’ll see if I can note any conquests in this blog. Honestly though I just go out to have a good time and anything that happens, it just happens. Usually I’m too drunk to be coherent anyway. Now if people wanted to hold that against me, no argument from me there.

This is a short day at work and then I’m going to get myself a nice JRP cheese steak, hit the gym, and then prepare for doing nothing. Kristen and the Noise is at Mad River tonight and Big Ben is getting ready to lay a goose egg. CK4, good luck in the championship game but the Championship Wild Turkeys are going to gobble gobble their way to victory. The line was -14.5 for the Steelers / Panthers but I think it’s too many points for a team that put up 19 points vs Buffalo, 13 vs Baltimore, 23 vs Cincy, and 17 vs the Jets in their last 4 games. Carolina stinks I know, but people will lean towards the Steelers and you want to against the public is what an article I read in the Wall St said today.

2 Week Betting History

In the past two weeks, I’ve gone 16-6 with my sports betting picks. Sounds unbelievable I know considering I’ve been bouncing around from NFL to NBA to College Football. What’s more unbelievable is how little I actually know about each of the sports. My general philosophy is that you don’t have to know specifically about the teams but a dissection of the line with a combination of whether the team is playing well or on a losing streak. 3 of those wins have come off of Sixers covers and that’s because the Sixers started off the season poorly, have a bad record, and have just started to play much better basketball. If you can take advantage of situations like that where their record might be 6-15 but they lost 3 that they should have won, these are times when the shitty team can cover against big spreads. Tonight they square off against the Nets in New Jersey as 2 point favorites. The Nets haven’t covered in their last 5 and the Sixers have in all of their last 5. I’m going to put myself out there and say that I think that the Sixers are going to cover this spread. I’m not going to bet my house on the game and it has setup written all over it because that simple analysis is what the bookies expect the public to do. The fun part about gambling is that if you think that is what they want you to think, you take the Nets. I try not to over think games though because it just makes for a mess. Stay tuned.

Monday Night Miracles

It has become household knowledge that crazy things happen on Monday nights when fantasy sports are involved at 200 Green Lane. I will delve into the football action in a paragraph or two because I’m first going to write about the Monday Night Miracle that almost happened in our Championship basketball game for the Y league. It was us, the all white team, vs an all black team w/ one white guy. We started the game in a 3-2 zone that worked well for us last time we played this team. Unfortunately it didn’t work so well this time. All of their players were draining shots and we couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. We weren’t pulling any O boards and were turning the ball over which led to fast break points by them. We finished the first half with 14 points and I think were down 20 or so. We opened the 2nd half in man and it proved to be a little bit more effective. We were hardly cutting into the lead for the first 10 minutes and then all of a sudden the D was forcing turnovers and we found ourselves down 4 points with less then 2 minutes left. Jeff had a chance to cut it to 2 with foul shots and uncharacteristically missed two. That was the last real chance we had to make a run at it. Jeff certainly isn’t to blame because everyone had opportunities. The other team was obviously on the edge of their seats and it was good we made it a game instead of getting embarrassed. We were just outsized and outshot but there’s always next year.

The real Monday Night Miracle occurred in the Houston-Baltimore game. I only had one fantasy playoff game this week because my other 3 teams had byes (brag). I had Andre Johnson and Boldin and he had Eli Manning and Cundiff, I entered down 14 or so. If you watched the game you know what happened, Johnson went huge with a 25+ point game and a huge TD at the end of regulation to give me the lead by 1. Boldin added another 2 points in the OT which made me safe from a Billy Cundiff less than 39 yard fg. To make matters all the better, I put 50 bucks on Baltimore -3. Meaning Cundiff could kick a 40 yarder and push my bet and lose my playoff game. As luck had it, the Ravens got a pick 6 to win the bet and cinch the playoff game. This win in Bakers league has me facing off against JKash’s Moisturizers and then potentially facing the other brother CK4 in the championship. Oh how sweet that would be. I get Sharon in the 2nd round of Bud’s league and Het’s Ballers in Evan’s league. A 4 for 4 sweep would be tough to pull off but I’m certainly hoping for it.

I find the Phillies getting Cliff Lee to be a bit like the Miami Heat putting together their trio. I’m not sure if anyone else feels this way but isn’t there way more gratification from winning when you aren’t purchasing the best team? The San Fransisco Giants winning the Series with that team this year, would be so far and away superior than if the Phillies were to win it in 2011. I honestly find it difficult to root for teams like the Phillies are putting together. Wasn’t there something exciting about having Jamie Moyer on the mound, knowing he was going to get shelled, and still winning baseball games? Considering the amount of baseball I intend to watch my points really have no meaning but I’m entitled to my own opinion.

Just to finish on the Dexter season finale. I certainly didn’t find this season has enjoyable as others. Jordan Chase as the villain just didn’t do it for me. I obviously thought the Tick Tick Tick was hilarious but he just didn’t have the same aura as the Trinity Killer or the Ice Truck Killer. The Quinn storyline with Liddy was sort of unusual as well. Deb and the end sequence wasn’t exactly great either because I thought it would be cooler if she knew Dex’s secret. It is still a good show but I just thought this season was kind of ho-hum compared to others.
