Top 10 Streaks in Sports By Difficulty

This post was suggested to me by Brookes and I think it’s stupendous. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed researching it. My biggest factor for judging difficulty was the feat of the streak and the level of competition.

Julio Cesar Chavez as a young boxer.

Julio Cesar Chavez as a young boxer.

10. Julio César Chávez 87 straight boxing victories
Floyd Mayweather is 41-0 and at the end of his career to give you an idea of how tough Julio Cesar Chavez was. Fighters today just don’t fight as often as Chavez did. Starting in 1980, he was fighting nearly once a month for the early stages of his career and still getting in the ring 6 times a year during the run. 13 years after he started he drew a fight to Pernell Whittaker. His career lasted 25 years and he won 107 fights. Arguments would be made to the quality of opponents but a 13 year run doesn’t happen overnight and boxing isn’t one of those non-contact sports.

Opposing teams did not want to see Eric Gagne in the 9th.

Opposing teams did not want to see Eric Gagne in the 9th.

9. Eric Gagne 84 consecutive saves
A tainted streak as Gagne admitted to using HGH but impressive none the less. He sported a .83 era, 14 K’s per 9, only gave up 3 homers, and inherited 23 runners and 0 scored. The next closest closer is Tom Gordon who had 54. Keep in mind that in the midst of Gagne’s streak of consecutive games saved, he has lost games after entering a tie contest — but those don’t count as blown saves (espn). Further reading on this streak can be found here.

Gretzky hoisting the cup on the Edmonton Oilers

Gretzky hoisting the cup on the Edmonton Oilers

8. Wayne Gretzky 51 consecutive games with a point
The Great One is oh so great that this record most likely will never be touched. Mario Lemieux holds second place with 46 games  followed by Wayne Gretzky again with 39. Mats Sundin holds 3rd place with 30 games. Gretzky averaged nearly three points a game during that stretch, with 61 goals and 92 assists for 153 points. When you are head and shoulders better than your competition it’s easy to accumulate a streak like this. This isn’t even putting the competition down, it’s saying how good Wayne Gretzky was. Averaging 3 points a game statistically makes this streak possible. However, no one else in hockey has ever done it for as long as Wayne.

John Wooden and Bill Walton- key components during the 88 game streak

John Wooden and Bill Walton- key components during the 88 game streak

7. UCLA Bruins 88 game win streak
John Wooden is possibly the most underrated coach of all-time. This is probably not true amongst basketball intelligentsia but the general public isn’t keen to UCLA basketball in the early 70’s. UCLA was the most dominant college team of all time when it comes to college hoops. Notre Dame gets the prestigious honor of being the team that ended UCLA’s streak in ’74 AND also beating them in ’71 to reset the streak. UCLA won 3 national championships during the run and 7 consecutive championships starting in ’67. Famous greats on these teams were Lew Alcinder and Bill Walton.

edwin-moses

Edwin Moses using his patented 13 steps through the 400 meter hurdles.

6. Edwin Moses 122 straight wins in 400m hurdles
Edwin didn’t lose a race from 1977 until 1987. He won 2 Olympic gold medals in the 400 meter hurdles at the 1976 Montreal games and 1984 Los Angeles. He still holds the 2nd fastest time in history in the 400m hurdles at 47.02. When he lost to fellow American Danny Harris, 21, said Moses, 31: “I ran a good race, and the guy that beat me is 10 years younger and ran the race of his life.” To set a record in 1983 and still have it be the 2nd best 32 years later shows how dominant Moses was during the stretch. It’s hard to lose when you are that much better than runners 30 years later.  Never getting tripped up by a hurdle too is noteworthy.

71Lakers

The 71-72 Lakers anchored by Wilt the Stilt

5. L.A Lakers 33 game win streak
The 71-72 Lakers were led by Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West. Wilt had shifted his game to defense, averaging 14.8 points — his first season of less than 20 a game — and 19.2 rebounds while West and Gail Goodrich drove L.A.’s attack from the backcourt.”(nba.com) The streak was broken by the Milwaukee Bucks who sported a roster of Kareem Abdul Jabar and the “Big O” Oscar Robertson. The Heat were the latest team to make a run at it peeling off 27 in the ’12-13 season led by Lebron.  33 games in game like basketball against professional competition is the definition of consistency.  Read more about the 71-72 Lakers.

4. Detroit Red Wings 24 consecutive playoff appearances
A city with a hockey history that cannot be matched. For 24 straight seasons the Red Wings have made the playoffs. The next closest is 10 years by the San Jose Sharks. Pats on the back all around to management, players, and coaches. They have developed a winning culture that provided 24 years of success (soon to be 25 as they sit tied for 4th with 3 other teams) and 4 Stanley Cups. Greats include Steve Yzerman, Sergei Federov, and Niklas Lidstrom.

A long career awaited for Brett Favre

A long career awaited for Brett Favre

3. Brett Favre 321 consecutive starts (including playoffs)
For a QB in football to play for 18 straight years while not missing a game due to injury is unreal. Brett wasn’t the most mobile QB so he avoided taking collision like hits but football is a sport where every game you can get injured. I can’t even imagine how many times he played through broken fingers, twisted ankles, and bruised hips. Peyton Manning was the next closest QB with 208 that ended in ’11. Jeff Feagles holds the record for most consecutive games played with 352 but that’s no where near as impressive.

Joltin' Joe

Joltin’ Joe

2. Joe Dimaggio 56 game hit streak
To get a hit 1 time for every 3 at bats is considered being a great hitter. All it takes is one game in a very small sample size of at bats to have to start over again. Plus pressure starts building when you’re 0-3 at bat the final time with a 40 game hitting streak on the line. This man laughed in the face of pressure and rolled it out 56 games. He had 91 hits over those 56 games, batted .408 and struck out just five times. It should be noted that the streak would have went to 75 if Ken Keltner’s glove didn’t make two great catches. Pete Rose was next closest with 44. Jimmy Rollins was the last closest player with a 38 game hit streak in ’05-’06.

Cal Ripkin breaking Lou Gehrigs streak of 2130 games.

Cal Ripkin breaking Lou Gehrigs streak of 2130 games.

1. Cal Ripkin 2,632 consecutive games played
My top honor goes to the “Iron Man” Cal Ripkin besting Lou Gerhig’s consecutive game streak by 532 games. 16 straight years of playing baseball and never missing a game. No streak has the dedication as a man that Ripkin’s does and that’s why it’s the best. Time against man is a constant battle and to avoid injury or sickness for this much time shows more commitment to a sport than can be asked from any one man. He was incredibly talented to boot. Sure it’s baseball and not the most physically demanding sport but 16 years is 16 years and no other schedule asks as much from an athlete. Incredible.

PSG vs Chelsea

180185“Ici c’est Paris”.  At 2:45pm today I watched my first Champions league match ever.  PSG is one of the richest French team’s and Chelsea is atop the EPL standings.   The line was -115 for PSG to win and a draw gets the bet back.  Brookes liked PSG at home and that was enough for me.

The draw of the Champions league is that it’s supposedly the best teams in the world duking it out for the championship.  The round of 16 started today which is done in a format that I find fair.  Each team plays 2 games, one home and one away, and the goal differential separates ties.  This is fairer than a knockout round and limits upsets.  HOWEVER, this method favors the better teams and from what I can tell, there are about 7 teams that realistically have a shot to win and the other 9 are longshots.  The odds to win:

Bayern Munich
Real Madrid
Barcelona
Chelsea
Atletico Madrid
Manchester City
Arsenal
Juventus
Paris Saint-Germain
Borussia Dortmund
Porto
Bayer Leverkusen
AS Monaco
Basel
Schalke
Shakhtar Donetsk

henchozWith my bet on PSG, I was met with an early Chelsea goal in the 35th minute.  Halftime came and went and Cavani (a Brookes favorite) tied it at 1 on a sweet header.   The game ended 1-1.  It was the first time I got to watch Zlatan Ibrahimović who stands a mighty 6-5.  He doesn’t seem to move much but makes magic when he gets the ball.

Eden HazardI enjoyed the game completely dominated by PSG but unfortunately didn’t win or lose my bet.  I feel the “meh” feeling of a game that doesn’t end in a win or loss.  Hazard for Chelsea was fouled 9 times which is ridiculous.  The whole soccer fouling I’ll never understand.  The players take dives and the refs are blowing the whistles whether they see contact or not.   It’s weird.

Sixers Sense of Sam Hinkie

Pablo Torre from Around the Horn

Pablo Torre from Around the Horn

Sixers article from ESPN magazine found here.

It’s a long article written by Pablo Torre that has good insight and is informative if you can get the entire way through it.

Sam Hinkie is the Sixers GM

Sam Hinkie is the Sixers GM

The first tidbit I take away is that Sam Hinkie is a secretive strategist who shares as little info as possible with the media.  Pablo’s 1st part of his article can be summed up in these 3 concepts that are part of Hinkie’s strategy:

1) Find injured prospects and foreign players,

2) Utilize a collective-bargaining-agreement-driven, pre-apocalyptic stockpile of second-round picks

3) Players who have long wingspans and are subpar shooters

My Take On Hinkie’s Strategy

Andrew Bynum Bowling1) Injured players can indeed provide value if they stay on the court.  It’s like drafting Arian Foster in fantasy football.  You know he’s great except he will only give you 12 games if you’re lucky.  Difference here is that his players are not even proven.   Foreign,  injured players, are even riskier.  It must be noted that Joel Embiid recently hit 48/60 from 3 in a shoot around so that’s promising.  Grade: C

One of the greatest 2nd round picks ever.

One of the greatest 2nd round picks ever.

2)  2nd round picks are also incredibly risky and flop more often than not.  To give you an idea of the top ranked active 2nd round picks:

1) Manu Ginobli (HOF)
2) Marc Gasol (Top 5 Center)
3) Paul Millsap (All-Star)
4) Monta Ellis (Scorer)
5) Lance Stephenson (Meh)

Fine players but none were ever top 10 in the league.  Grade: C

Now that's a wingspan.

Now that’s a wingspan.

3) This specific body type is somewhat mind boggling. What these players produce has both negatives and positives.  “Philly is forcing turnovers at a league-high 15.6 percent through the All-Star break but shooting a league-low 41 percent, is incentivized to wait on such a large-scale renovation.”  Grade – C

sixers-tank-logoA final thought on what produces championships:
FiveThirtyEight found that of the past 40 teams to make the Finals, their No. 1 player, on average, ranked in the 96th percentile in statistical plus/minus. The No. 2 player was 90th percentile; the No. 3, 79th.

Now correct me if i’m wrong but is the Sixers best player even in the top 79th percentile?  They have no superstar.  No leader.  No experience.  This team might be good in 2020 if all works out.  What kind of a strategy is that?  I’m not arguing what they were doing before was working but to automatically think that Sam Hinkie knows what he’s doing here is crazy.

The 258 Special

The Dude abides. Here are our text messages before a career game.

Bowling Screenshot

Bowling 2

Bowling 5

Bowling 3

That set up 3 person bowling at Facenda Whitaker. I brought my shammy cloth to wipe off the oil of the house ball.

originalFarva: What’s this?
[playing with cloth]
Rabbit: A chamois cloth.
Farva: Ha. Lucky guess. I just lost a buck. To myself.

Big Wevs came out of retirement throwing the dice ball and won the first game. The Dude took game 2 rolling a 225. I even added the pic on Instagram using the caption “rolling a casual 225 on a Thursday night”. I was pretty proud of myself besting my old high of 214.

Wevs took game 3 by ousting the Wads with 2 strikes in the 10th. This set up the magical 4th game. The Dude opened frame 1. Hardly ridden with negative feelings that the game was lost, the Dude rolled 8 straight strikes. Wevs has the video which I’ll try to get. I spared the 10 and striked my final ball for a 258. Career high and admiration from the entire alley. Especially the HIGH school stoners next to us.

A 258 game

The party ensued afterward and now I sit waiting for my next opportunity for a perfect game. Hilarious text after it happened.

Bowling 4

The 258 is a bit below an ace in golf but still a decent accomplishment. I had a few Jersey’s in the run so it was hardly ideal but I’ll take it. I finished 6 games with a 185 avg, the Wads was 173, and the Wevs dropped to a 155 after barely breaking 100 his last game due to thumb concerns. Also noted was Wads losing the first 5 games and being down 30 bucks and coming through in the final game with a 200+ to break even.

How Do I Become a Soccer Fan?

soccer_archery[dropcap background=”yes” color=”#333333″]S[/dropcap]occer season is upon us. I watched Harry Kane score 2 goals on Saturday and actually cheered with excitement.  Wait. Did I just write that?

I can already see it happening. Soccer in the USA is gaining in popularity and the soccer snobs will start complaining that average fans are infiltrating their passion.

“Soccer Snobs aren’t using their high soccer IQ’s or passion to grow the game by embracing fans of all types. Instead they choose to spread vitriol aimed at scaring the casual fan away.” – TheShinGuardian

With limited knowledge of “football”, I’ll attempt to describe what it’s like being a die hard NFL fan attempting to spend some time enjoying another sport.

International Leagues

7DAgKSTM

European Champions League

By far the most interesting aspect of the sport is its broad appeal.  240 million people play soccer in over 200 countries.  National pride for excellence helps propel the sport as seen by the World Cup every 4 years.  There are also national leagues throughout England, Germany, Spain… and even the USA that are played annually.  The Champions league is one of the most prestigious competitions that combines the best teams throughout Europe and gets remarkable TV ratings.

This leads to the MLS and the USA national team.  I watched the USA in the World Cup in 2014 and they did great to make it out of their group only to lose in the next round.  How does a country of 316 million people lose to a country of 11.2 million people (Belgium) in the World Cup?

  • The MLS has only been active since 1996.  Germany’s Bundesliga, the football league with the highest average stadium attendance worldwide, was founded in 1962.
  • Eldrick "Tiger" Woods at a young age.

Eldrick “Tiger” Woods at a young age.

Lack of USA soccer role models certainly plays a part.  Landon who?

  • Other options for sports.  Basketball, baseball, and football are other popular options for young athletes.  These leagues in the USA are far more lucrative than the paltry salaries offered by the MLS.
  • The USA does not dominate the sport.
  • Where the hell are the riots we hear about in Europe?
  • The sport itself.

The Weakness of Soccer

Boring SoccerSoccer fans will never admit that their sport is boring.  Tactical play.  Strategy.  WANTING TO TIE!  All of this turns high level intelligence into a snooze fest.  Many games end with one team scoring one time.  Heaven forbid you have to watch a game that ends 0-0.    If this wasn’t enough to turn you off, there’s more:

  • flopping_soccerFlopping.  Constantly throughout games players flop to get calls and are rewarded for being good at being sneaky.  As a sports fan rewarding bad behavior is bad for the sport.
  • 45 minutes followed by 45 more uninterrupted minutes.  If you aren’t bored after watching for 5 straight minutes you have to watch for 9x that to get through a half.  Worst part is if you get up to take a leak during that time span you might miss the only few seconds of excitement.
  • The leagues are unbalanced.  Teams that have the most money get the best players. No salary cap means that teams the top teams usually stay the top teams.  Hard to get excited as a Leicester City fan.

The Verdict

world-cupI’m a sports betting fan.  I like the idea behind putting my money on a sporting event and watching it.  It gives me rooting interest and I genuinely enjoy sports.  Plus the games air at 7:45am on a Saturday morning which means morning drinking which is better than day drinking!

I’ve never given soccer a chance though because I find the game slow.  I watched a USA – Panama friendly match on Sunday and it was watching paint dry.  I can’t imagine I’d get more excited watching a MLS game without money behind it.

The English Premier league interests me strictly because of the rivalry’s involved.  The idea of a Champions league where Bayern Munich can play Real Madrid excites me further (they lost 5-0 last year).  I want the best of the best.  Don’t tell me the CONCACAF is coming to Philly and we aren’t sleeping until it arrives.  Just a joke Gourlay.

Let’s not forget Alex Morgan.

Thanks @karakeoughboz for this hilarious vid. Had to share since I had no idea she was filming! #houstonfun

Do You Bet on a Winning (Spurs) Team?

I woke up at 7:30 am to watch Spurs play Arsenal.  Since I like to gamble and football is finished, soccer fits the bill.  Yes, I just used the word since.  To make life interesting I put $75 on Spurs to win $125.  The pick em’ and moneyline for soccer still confuse me if anyone wants to explain.

harry_kane730-1

Harry Kane

Harry Kane is a player to watch.  The only goal (2) scorer on Spurs from the one game I’ve ever watched.  Spurs dominated the game and pulled off a 2-1 victory to move to 4 in the standings.   Harry Kane is in the right place at the right time.  Tremendous game today to win me $125 dollars.  He earned pride more valuable than money.

The key to take away from this game is that the underdog won.

If you can FIND the underdog, you can win a lot money.

So you must ask yourself, who do I root for?

I look to the Sixers as guidance.  Why would I root for them?  Because they can’t get any worse and it’s the floor of celebration?  Rooting for talented teams that win when they are not supposed to is the answer for sports.  Sixers are still years away from serious competition but Spurs could be the real deal.

Blue is Bill Belichick’s Favorite Color

bluegatoradebet

Bill-Belichick-gatorade-620x400This was my pride and joy bet on Super Bowl Sunday. Other sites seem to say that it should have been 15/2 so I feel a bit jipped but either way I can’t complain.

My other prop bets didn’t fare so hot. I had Julian Edleman to score the first TD and LeGarrette Blount to score at some point in the game. For some inexplicable reason I wasn’t paid off on the name Katy Perry being mentioned more than 2 times before halftime. I also won the mention of deflated balls under 3. My $150 on the Patriots was correct. All in all I broke close to even coming out on top a little bit.

It also wouldn’t be fair not to mention bowling with Bud and the Shee on Sunday. Lane conditions weren’t as strong as they were at Facenda last week and scores reflected it. The Shee beat me by 2 total pins when I double guttered the 9th frame for reasons unknown. It definitely wasn’t the 2nd pitcher I drank. Mention to Bud’s left handed shot which was used about a dozen times on that sticky 10 pin.

Sitting here on a Monday at work feels like torture. This day sucks.

The Big Berdych Has Flown the Coop

czech-republics-tomas-berdych_clazxttc4zjx1hidtohs54tdn

Tomas Berdych

Betting on tennis is fun.  Coming off of two strong wins predicting Tomas Berdych would cover 1 1/2 sets (he had lost the last 17 matches) vs Nadal and than outright picking Warwinka (+125) to defeat Nishikori , I was thinking tennis was easy money.    I was going to send a group text saying to pick Tomas Berdych outright against Andy Murray.  He was +120 and coming off of a huge win with major momentum.

The match was on at 3:30 this morning which I had no intention of watching.  For some inexplicable reason I woke up at 5 am and decided to check the match.  It was only in the 3rd set after a 76 minute first set that Berdych won.  I decided to go to the gym and watch it on a treadmill.  I got 4+ miles in this morning only to see Berdych lose in the 4th set.  I’m glad I didn’t send a group text to bet on Berdych like I wanted to.

This leads me to the Super Bowl.  The line opened at a pick em and now is the Patriots -2.  My initial thought was it was going to be a Patriots romp with Sherman and Thomas hurt against the Packers.  With 2 weeks of healing my opinion is wavering.  The bet feels like a trap.  I already put $150 on the Patriots at -2 because I was scared the line would move to -3.

zhombaegu2otx9xtvfikIn 2007 the league made a rule change that the road team could use their own footballs.  Since then the Patriots have dominated the league with fewest RB fumbles.  Is it possible that the Patriots play every game with a deflated football because there is less chance to fumble it?  That also has me thrown off.  I’m sure I’ll make a post closer to game time about where my action is but for now i’m all over the place.

Let’s Talk Kyle Korver

Today must be Kyle Korver day because I learned 3 tidbits about him that are incredible.

  • Of the 181 shots Kyle Korver has made this season, only 9 have been unassisted
  • He has possessed the ball for less than 2 seconds before all but 5 of his 3pt attempts. (He made all 5 of the others)
  • He has shot 254 three-pointers this year. He has taken 0 dribbles before 232 of them.

To show that he’s not just a 3 point specialist, this hammer jam was Korver’s first slam in more than two years and just the 16th of his career.

TeddyKGB_PAYTHATMANHISMONEYThis dunk comes alongside a bet with Elton Brand. Brand bet Korver $100 bucks that he would hit a 3 before Korver dunked. I completely stole the Gif from dimemag.com but it was so appropriate and I rarely use a Teddy KGB reference.

Non-basketball fans with no understanding of the game would say that these stats show that he’s useless by himself. However, this would be incorrect logic for the below reasoning:

A defender has to guard Korver for the entire possession because he’s always a threat to score. Whereas a traditional isolation-reliant player who can “create his own shot” is primarily only a threat with the ball in his hands.

kylekorver1Korver has become the NBA’s best pure shooter. He will never be looked at as more than a role player for the exact reasons these stats highlight. When compared to a do it all player like Stephen Curry, the difference is clear.

A team like the Atlanta Hawks, who are 37-8, have found a role for him and it’s quite painful knowing he was a Sixer for 4 years and was traded for Gordan Giricek and a protected first-round pick. Now a potential all-star, you see a team who has no idea how to utilize a skilled player. Nikola Vucevic also comes to mind.

Who Still Likes the New England Deflatriots?

patriotsThe report is that 11 or 12 PATRIOT game balls were under-inflated during the AFC championship game.  This was checked at halftime and found to be true.  Whether or not it was rectified in the 2nd half is unclear.  If it was, they blew out the Colts even worse in the 2nd half with normal balls.

Underinflated balls are easier to catch and was noticed when a Colts player intercepted the ball in the first half.  In bizzare manner, Patriots staff would have had to take air out of the balls after they were checked 2 hours before the game in some super sneaky way that no cameras caught anything.  This is probably easier than you’d think.

New York Jets v New Engalnd PatriotsDid it alter the outcome of this game?  Most likely not.  Is it strange?  Absolutely.  If you are Bill Belichick you have to be shaking your head and asking how did we get caught?  The game was 50 degrees so there is no excuse that balls under inflate in the cold.  Once again the Patriots test the limits of gamesmanship and will not come out unscathed.  I’m still going to bet on them in the SuperBowl.
