The Missing, the falling, the dropping

This is day 13 of my ankle injury and am finally able to start putting a little pressure on the ankle. My walking is still probably about a week off but that’s sooner rather then later. What is really bothering me is the title of this post. When you have crutches, everything is that much harder. When you miss dropping trash in the trash can then you have to annoyingly pick up the trash. Whenever I have to put the crutches in a spot, they have a tendency to fall over no matter what the situation. Carrying objects becomes a huge nuisance. If I pour myself a cup of soda then I’m challenged with the task of not being able to hold it while I move. That in turn makes me hop around holding the cup and obviously if I pour too much, it starts spilling all over the place. Plus virtually anything I carry gets dropped and then I get pissed off because I have to put too much energy to picking it up. I can’t wait for this nightmare to be over.

I finished the book Toys by James Patterson and it was quite an easy read. The book has 120 chapters or so and each on is broken down to 2-4 pages per chapter. It made me feel like a kid again. The story was just really rushed and what I considered major events would fly by in a page or two. Plus things get confusing because everything is set in the future so they have upgraded abilities and are able to do things not possible in real life. I’d say I moderately enjoyed the book but probably wouldn’t recommend it. The amount of time James Patterson put towards the novel reminds me of the Stephen King skit in Family Guy when King was pitching his next novel and he just picks up a lamp from the desk and says it’s going to be about a lamp monster. Same deal I think because this could have been a much better book with some thought put into it. If anyone wants to read it after my rave review, I’ll be happy to give it to you.

Need to drink vs abusing drinking

Laura called me “just to talk” and asked me how I was doing with my ankle and what not. She also asked if I was going out or if I was just drinking by myself. Just to clear this up, I’m not an alcoholic in the sense that I NEED to have a drink each night. Since this injury I haven’t consumed a sip of alcohol going on almost two weeks. I drink because I think it’s fun and makes life more entertaining. Now, I am an alcoholic in the sense that I 100% completely abuse drinking. There is no off switch when it comes to having enough. I pretty much drink myself into oblivion and even though this is a different type of alcoholic, it’s just as dangerous. I just wanted to clear that up so my readers know what type of drunk I am.

My brackets have been going pretty well as I never had Louisville advancing past the next game and actually had Richmond to the Sweet 16 in all 3. I’m still waiting for the last 4 games but I swept the 7:00 games. Bake’s pick is to take UCLA with the points so I jumped on board that as well. I’ve been devoting more and more time towards poker and have posted winning day 8 of the last 9 for a profit of 500 bucks in 10 days. I haven’t had any big days yet so I’m still waiting to break through but I can sense it’s close. It sort of nullifies any money I use for sports betting because it’s all pocket change. I’m also reading the book Toys and will post a review after I finish the book. It’s 368 pages and I’m already 200 of the way through in 3+ hours of reading so it’s a real shorty.

Broken Ankle Documentation – Day 9

Heel pretty bruised

This is where the break occurred

Nothing to be concerned about

I’m pretty amazed at the lack of information on broken ankles. I didn’t find any info about the hemotoma that occurred or what to expect after the initial break. I’m sure my daily readers are getting bored with these constant ankle updates but I really don’t have much else to talk about. I actually put on my right sock today by myself with only the help of leaning my ass against the door which was a huge accomplishment. Tomorrow I might even try to put my boxers on one leg at a time. Seriously these are big deals. I have a dr visit on Wednesday so hopefully that will shed some more light on how much longer for recovery. I honestly only want to be able to walk again without crutches and then I’ll be happy.

The absolute worst thing about this whole situation is my inactivity. I haven’t been able to exercise in a over a week now and I’m starting to notice my body getting, well, fat. I chow down a sleeve of oreo’s and then just feel disgusting. I see how people get fat now. It’s just do what I’m doing, but not being handicapped and having no self motivation to exercise. It’s somewhat pathetic honestly considering my daily routine to what I’ve been reduced to. People out there live this way on a daily basis. Sad but true.

Just to add a few reviews to the movies I watched. Jackass 3d is a complete waste of money. I thought the skits they included in the movie may have catered to the 3d aspect and they just weren’t that great on regular TV. I wouldn’t recommend Lost Boys to anyone and if anyone says it’s good, I have to disagree. The best thing about the above two movies is that they are both 90 minutes long. I know the Lost Boys was 80’s but I’ve heard about the movie so I figured I’d check it out and I prefer Twilight. Inception was thought provoking but hardly confusing. While I was watching I had some questions but then I read the Wikipedia and then what I watched made sense. I thought the idea of the person being in the dream having a physical form and then searching through the dream for information was pretty far fetched but whatever.

Weekend Sum Up

I haven’t been posting to many updates to anything mainly because I’m not doing anything. On Friday, I went to the ER because of this:

So blood started going into my toes so I decided it was probably a good idea to visit the hospital but as it turns out it’s only a hematoma and there was nothing to do but elevate it and ice it. I played a good amount of online poker. I watched Jackass 3d, the Lost Boys, and inception. I can tell I’m still a week or two from even walking which still blows and I’m just hoping the ankle heals back to normal because it feels really funny trying to walk. As of now, life is slow.

Slow 3x

We aren’t Yeah 3x by Chris Brown quite yet. I’m just starting to get used to everything taking 3x as long to do. Waking up, getting ready, moving, and just about anything else I can think of takes longer. I also hardly move around so my intake of food has been significantly less. I ate breakfast today at 9 and it’s 2pm and I have no feeling of hunger. I’ve honestly just been playing gobs and gobs of online poker because I don’t have to move and it entertains me. I’ve final tabled 2 of the 180 mans in the last 2 days with a 3rd and a 7th. I also got 24th out of 1650 people in a $11 dollar turbo. I have a feeling this weekend is going to contain more online poker then I know what to do with but it’s only a matter of time before I break though because I’ve been playing some really good poker. I even cashed 4 out of 4 180 man tournaments which is pretty impressive in itself.

I’m still unable to walk so my thinking of only a few days to let it heal and at least I’ll be able to walk again was incorrect. I have this walking boot but the ankle is still pretty purple near the ligament damage so it’s not even close to fully healed. At least the swelling of the actual ankle has gone down. The walking boot doesn’t really help though because I still can’t walk right without the crutches. At first I was pretty depressed but now I just want to get through these couple of weeks and at least walk again without feeling handicapped. I really have a new found respect for people who have to deal with an issue like this on a daily basis because if people with problems similar to mine are able to accomplish things, and I can’t accomplish shit with all my features in tact, I must be doing it wrong. I’m going to remain sober and probably be a hermit this weekend but I just don’t see any reason to jeopardize the recovery by trying to do anything “fun”. I have a post on normalcy that I’m working on and will hope to finish up by Saturday that I think is pretty funny.

Day 5 on Broken Ankle

So I’ve reached day #5 of my busted ankle and I spent the full day at work. I’m limited to sitting and talking so that sort of makes my duties easier to fulfill. It’s hard to get distracted when you can’t really do anything else. I’ve gotten used to crutching around but it’s a slower process and traveling longer distances can get tiring. I almost bit the dust today when I tried to take a shower and put some pressure on my bad ankle and nearly slipped. Everything you do can easily turn into something worse if you aren’t careful. Sleeping was annoying because I tried to sleep without the boot and then my ankle would start to turn in a weird direction and that would be mildly painful but enough to wake me up. I then decided to just sleep in the boot and that sort of helped but mid way through the night I ended up kicking that off. The worst part about this is trying to take something somewhere. It’s extremely difficult to clutch something in your hand and take it somewhere while on crutches. The holding of the item and the holding of the crutch don’t coincide so well. Someone needs to make a pouch on the crutch. I also don’t feel comfortable going anywhere on crutches. I just feel like a giant inconvenience and not only that but it’s a hassle to reach into pockets or move out of the way. I’m just hoping this heals faster than expected.

I’ll stop blogging about this whole process because it’s not that interesting but I still have to get my frustrations out of my system in the early going. I can’t imagine coming up with too many creative topics in the near term as my interaction with people will dwindle. When I was sitting in the room at the doctors yesterday I could overhear these females talking about this other girls hairstyle and this one lady much have said “it looks good, it looks great, I love it” like 3 times in a row. There would be a slight stop to the conversation and she would just blurt this phrase out. If I could have walked I would have gotten up and strangled her but alas. I’ve lost the feeling of depression now because I won’t need any surgery and it’s basically let it heal on its on which is finally a break. Everyone always uses that joke too and now I’m just like ha. Aside from people laughing when I’m hopping around or calling me a gimp, I should be able to make it through this unscathed. At least it provided for 3 days of blog material.

Search Terms

750 unique people found my blog yesterday which is pretty much off the chart. I almost had a day where 400 people showed up but yesterday was tops by far. You break an ankle and then all of a sudden people start noticing you. I had people pushing buttons to open doors today, asking how I was feeling or do I need anything. The extra attention is sort of annoying but producing more web traffic has always been my goal of maintaining rnningfool.com. Early on it was strictly for my own personal record keeping but now I’d like to see it prosper. I thought an interesting post would be to delve into some of the more unique search terms that people have put into Google to arrive at my site.

– Just to get the main ones out of the way “suri cruise”, “tatyana ali”, “Ashley Banks”, and “Alex Mack” all produce.

– Someone got here with “you clipped me” a little which is a reference to the career builder commercial which was funny.

– “Black Men in Manayunk” also had a hit which is funny because I literally think <5% of the population in manayunk is black.

– “Drunk Sofia Vergera” had a hit. I wish I had a story with this.

– “if i have two jack daniels and coke drinks how drunk will i be”. I’m hoping any one of my posts helped this individual out.

– “most people, due to fears of dying alone, will marry some jackass because they think nothing better will come along. they’re usually right”

– “What is Shawn Bradley doing now?” – probably couldn’t shed any light on this one.

Broken Ankle Xray Update

I went to an orthopedic specialist today and he confirmed it was a break. The good news though was that I don’t need to have surgery and I don’t even need a cast. They put me in a walking boot which I will most likely have to wear for 4 weeks. I think all in all this was relatively good news. I still need to rest it though and walking on it still isn’t happening but at least I can shower now with some regularity. I took a bath last night for the first time in so many years and basically had my one leg sprawled out of the tub and it was completely uncomfortable and washing myself with my own water still had me grossed out. Luckily I made it out of there alive and no further damage or slips. I have a follow up appointment in a week but for now we begin the healing process.

In an unrelated / sortof related topic, I find the percosets to not really have too much of an effect and I don’t understand why people who aren’t injured like them so much. I’ve noticed that my mouth seems to always have cotton mouth which seems to be an effect of the pain killers. In one bizarre dream sequence, after I took a percoset and fell asleep, I felt like I had a female robot voice trying to jerk me off. I’ve never in my life had a dream like that and it was pretty wild so maybe the percoset had an effect and if so, maybe I’m wrong on why people like them so much.

That’s the Breaks

That’s a picture of the swelling that a broken ankle will do to you. Here’s a post describing the ER experience. Safe to say I’m out for any type of athletics for the next 6 weeks, most likely 3+ months. I received some texts and emails asking why I’m slacking on my posts and the easy answer is that handicapped people tend to do things slower. This whole process is pretty much a nightmare as it slows me down considerably at work and any type of cardio exercise is not happening. Meaning my Broad Street run is out the window which really sucks. It also means over these next 6 months I’m probably going to get fat due to lack of exercise which is going to make me have to eat healthier to compensate.

The one thing I’ve noticed is that random people take pity for a cripple. Everyone always tries to move out of the way or they say excuse me. I’ve never received this kind of treatment in my entire life. I also notice that people say it can be a good time to gather your thoughts and think about things but I have to admit I can tell I’m going to get bored and this is only day 3. I have a meeting with a specialist tomorrow who can shed further light on the situation like what to expect in the future. The reality is that I should be able to come up with more blog posts then ever due to lack of things to do. I went to work today for 3 hours or so and just the moving around and the constant action was agitating my ankle so I know that I have to cut back on that in the future. This pretty much eliminates all activities for me for a while but I’m going to hope to turn this into a positive and maybe fix a few things in my life. Aside for devoting more time to my blog I also get the chance to catch up on reading which I’m going to look forward to. I apologize to anybody who interacts with me for athletics or social events because I’m pretty much going to be living in a cave moving forward.

A few things that bother me from the micro perspective. The crutches smell like hospital which means every time I have to go somewhere I have this smell lingering and then I have to wash my hands and that starts to dry them out because they are getting washed so much. Also showering is nearly impossible because I can’t get this splint wet. With that being said I haven’t showered since Sunday night. I’m actually going home to take a bath which really disgusts me but I don’t have any other choices. I can’t wear jeans properly because they don’t fit over the splint so I’m forced to wear these nylon pants which makes me feel like I’m supposed to be exercising non-stop. Even the little things like hopping around gets bothersome because using the crutches for every movement isn’t fun either. Just finding places to put the crutches is difficult because they have such bad balance and they insta-fall and since they are like 5 ft tall they start hitting anything in the area. This experience will certainly make me appreciate having two legs to a further extent.

New Site

I’ve decided to buy another domain name and create another site. I already have the idea and hopefully with the increase in traffic to this site, it will be easier to kick start the other. It should only take me a day or two to set up word press and I have chosen a theme with a myriad of ideas so it should never go stale. I think it will give me some more direction compared to this site which took me almost two years before Google found it. I haven’t really decided what I’m going to do with this domain name. I obviously figure on keeping it but how I’m going to decide on which content on which site will take some thought. I do think that this is going to be a good idea though or else I wouldn’t do it. It may be a tad extra work to keep two sites going but honestly what else am I doing right now. I’ll put a link to it in my blogroll when I put it live.

Just a quick Angry Birds update. I 3 starred every level in the Halloween version as well as the season’s. I haven’t played the original but the graphics seem terrible to these last two so I don’t really see any reason to. I’m pretty happy to say that I hope this is the last video game I ever play because the frustration involved with this game does not make it worth playing for a significant time. I probably spent between 10-20 hours playing it so it brought me back to my high school days of completely wasting time. There is literally no gratification received from finishing this game. At least in some games on playstation they’d give you an ending or something but this was just completely nothing which just reinforced my will of never wanting to play a game again. Me vs the computer is finished.
