Adding to the Losing

Last week’s Monday post was titled “miserable”, this week is more of the same. The Phillies and Eagles seasons are over. I briefly wrote about the Phillies and I’m not completely shattered by it. The Eagles are the sloppiest team in the NFL right now. Penalties, fumbles, terrible coaching, you name it they have it. Our football team in the Manayunk Sport and Social got worked on Saturday. We were down 28-24 or something close at halftime and ended up losing 58-30. Our defense didn’t stop them from scoring a touchdown one time the entire game. It was ugly. I did have a little bit of winning betting on sports this week winning 4 college football games in a row and one MLB game. I took that into Sunday where I put 140 bucks on Cam Newton and the Panthers which covered. I then proceeded to lose that money by betting on the Bronco’s and the Falcon’s. It’s still sort of free money so I’m not complaining. My fantasy teams also took it on the chin as I’ll go 1-3 with one game looming. I need Calvin to go for about 13 points to salvage a terrible week and beat Evan.

I’ll probably won’t be posting after tomorrow because I’m going to Atlanta for a roofing show and then spending some time in Ft Lauderdale with the Rock. I could use a break as this monotony of work and play is getting boring. The same way this blog is. I know I haven’t been putting much effort into it but it sort of comes and goes. Sometimes I feel like I have interesting things to write about any other times zip.

Decay

I feel like I owe my readers some life update because the majority of my posts lately have been about random topics that strike me throughout the day. I’ve come to the conclusion that these are generally more interesting than my life. After the Distance Run last Sunday I stopped running. Aside from a Bball and Football game I’ve been loafing around watching TV, reading or something else. My Beatles book, fantasy football and random TV has been occupying my time. It’s funny because I’m actually bored writing about it so I can only imagine how you must feel reading about it. It’s just the same routine day in and day out. Work, few hours of freedom, sleep, work… I don’t dislike working but these weeks are really running together. I do get to go to Atlanta in a few weeks for a sheet metal show and then visit the Rock in Ft. Lauderdale for a couple of days. That’s at least something to look forward to. I’ve also been in the market for some wireless speakers and a new computer. With all these songs I have access to, I am sort of limited to listening to them in my room. Hooking up nice speakers that can used for the TV and to play music from my computer or phone would bring me into 2011. Also, the computers out there are really cheap. I like the touch screens where all the hardware is built in the monitor. I’ve always found laptops to be annoying and just prefer a keyboard and mouse that isn’t set up for a tiny person. This computer is almost 6 years old and it still works but it’s time I upgraded to something more modern.

Shop til you drop

I have been living a life of boredom for the past few weeks. This is done by choice but if you read my post a few weeks ago, I wrote that I was going to try to take this half marathon seriously and not get wasted on the weekends and try to train for it. This plan was mostly brought to fruition aside from the training part. My weekends have been plain and boring and I’ve been feeling relatively healthy. Tomorrow at 8am after, hopefully, an hour and 20 minutes of running, I will end this little project. It’s nice to feel the same way each morning but I just miss some “excitement”. Perhaps this is the alcoholic in my talking but I will refer to a Family Guy episode where they show two potential life paths of Peter. One in which he never drank and had geeky friends and a straight edge life and another where he was a drunk and all the bad things that happen. The moral is moderation and I believe that this is what I will strive for in the future.

On Friday night I played some poker and got into an interesting pot. I had 33 and the flop game 346. I bet 10 into the pot and was called by one person. The turn brought a 3 giving me quads and the fat woman, who the player to the left of me referred to as Jabba the Hutt, checked and I bet 15 hoping not to lose her, she called. The river brought a 3 card flush and money signs were going off in my head. She bet 35 bucks and I Hollywooded for a moment and said raise and put out 35 chips. She heard the raise and said something to the effect, I call whatever. Obviously this is music to my ears and I then ask does she have to call my bet, I’m all in then. They bring the floor over and the idiot lady is given the option of what she wants to do when I bet 250 into a pot of 80. She ends up calling anyway and turns over a straight and I doubled up in the first 30 minutes. I only left with a 50 buck profit due to some bad play and bad luck.

I woke up early on Saturday and went to get a haircut. I had some really awkward conversation with the barber and we talked about golf a little and he told me the same story he told me the last time I had him. I just didn’t have the banter to make the talk any less tough to get through. After that I went to Barnes and Noble and bought the 4th book in the Game of Thrones Series, Chuck Klosterman’s “Killing Yourself to Live” and a book about the Beatles. I also went to Modell’s and I will predict this franchise will be out of business shortly. They have no customers and a lousy selection. I also went to BestBuy and bought a Squeeze greatest hits CD and a James Taylor album out of the $4.99 bargain bin. Next I went to the mall and will comment on the overpriced Auntie Anne’s stand which charged me $4.82 for a monster lemonade and a pretzel. That was my morning and it felt pretty good feeling sober and spending some money on material goods.

It’s 8pm now and I’m pretty much sitting here listening to music and reading a book by myself. In a sense I find it fairly sad that I don’t enjoy socializing without alcohol but for some reason I just feel better staying in alone and just reading. I’m well aware of my mishaps and abuse of alcohol but spending weeks like this proves that I can be sober, I just have to change my typical behavior. Whether it’s good or bad I’m not really sure but it is a change of pace and I certainly feel healthier. I don’t expect a bang up time tomorrow but it should be a good start to a Sunday filled with football.

Dear City of Philadelphia Parking Violation Center

Dear rulers of the roads,
I am outraged at the size of the ticket I just received at 4:24pm on 9/16/11. I am a resident of the city and am in town to pick up a race packet at the convention center when I park my car along side the curb at Arch and 12th. I saw a Kiosk about 15 steps back and proceeded to pay $1.25 to allow me to park till 4:49 (I have the receipt). I arrived at this location at 4:22pm. There were cars behind me along the curb and I knew I was only going to be a short period of time and I was not blocking any traffic. I picked up my packet from the convention center and went back to my car to find a traffic violation for $76.00. The time was 4:40pm. While inside for 18 minutes, I was given a ticket after a two minute period. Now, I presume I must have been in front a no parking from here to the corner but I didn’t notice it while I was parking. After two minutes I was ticketed an insane amount of money for the violation. It makes sense the city hires hundreds of traffic cops when they charge $76.00 per violation. I didn’t commit $76.00 dollars of violation fees during this 18 minute window. Enclosed is a check for $20.00 which I feel is a fair amount for this minor inconvenience. I also find the threats that you will charge “significant” late fees upon no payment to be a little totalitarian. Please accept my apologies and payment and we can move past this incident.

A proud citizen of Philadelphia,
Tom Stortz

Being Boring

I didn’t go out at all this weekend and pretty much just did nothing of much interest. I paid 5 bucks for True Grit which I found pretty slow and boring. I actually fell asleep at the end and turned it off without really caring what happened which is unusual for me. I woke up on Saturday and went golfing with the Shee at Shannondell which is found in Valley Forge. Neither of us played particularly well and I chalk this up to playing down to the course. At 49 dollars this price was a bit steep for its value. After that we played some mini golf with the Wevs who was back in town and I once again reigned supreme at Mini Golf. After a big win down the shore vs Bake, I came back against the Cohens like nothing had changed. After that Shee and I went to Harrah’s which I documented earlier. I went to sleep early on Saturday and woke up early on Sunday. I’m just about the 3rd book of Game of Thrones which has been occupying my time. I also started Mad Men which is fairly interesting.

Obviously Sunday is fantasy football so I will add a few thoughts. I’m in 5 leagues this year and it looks like I will go 2-3. I beat the poop out of Evan with a Stafford, Calvin and Kenny Britt combo. Gusto is going to lose to me because I had Steve Smith and Calvin against him. Bill Schmidt laid the smackdown on me and even though I probably will finish with the 2nd highest point total for the week, a loss is a loss. Those were my Yahoo leagues, all of which were good showings. My two in ESPN were a complete debacle. Mendenhall, the Chiefs D and Vincent Jackson all let me down in the one league and the other was a no show by Chris Johnson, Owen Daniels and not playing Steve Smith. I still have a shot but 4 guys totaling 70 points is unlikely. I was pretty happy with my teams though and think that this is only one week of a long season.

Sheepish

sheep·ish- adjective
1. embarrassed or bashful, as by having done something wrong or foolish.

I don’t know if everyone knows what this word means but I got to experience it for about 2 hours yesterday playing poker. I was playing at a table with a guy he raises 100% of the pots to 10 dollars. In one hand I made it 25 with AQ over his 10 and 4 people other than him called. The flop came A75 and with 100 in the pot he made it 60 and I pushed my stack which he called. The board ran out bricks and he tabled A2 for an early double up. The big pot happened about 2 orbits later which brought about this post. He made it 10 preflop and I made it 60 which only he called. The flop came 249 all diamonds and I checked to him. He had me covered still by the way and one of my Kings was a diamond. He bet 125 and I called, I had about 350 still behind and the pot got to around 400. I don’t remember the turn but it was a brick and he pushed the river. I thought for about 5 seconds and called thinking this guy usually has any two and my KK could still be good at this point and I probably have an out if I’m wrong. He had actually flopped a flush a flush and I was drawing at 7 outs. The dealer brought me a diamond and it shipped a 1,200 dollar pot my way.

He took the beat very well and I had to sit there feeling like I just completely ratted a huge pot. This isn’t really a fun feeling because the guy has a tendency to not forget a 1,200 dollar pot so fast. Not to mention this guy was a Kimbo looking fellow with a beard about a foot long. This guy was a complete professional though and didn’t berate me or say anything so this process of people getting over this monster pot wasn’t so bad. Nevertheless, I have the feeling of an undeserved 1,200 dollars in my wallet. So my Saturday 3 hour session resulted in a 770 dollar profit which I’m happy to deposit in my bank account. I’ll take it.

Unemployed

Since I’ve graduated from college, I’ve been employed for all but 2 weeks. These past two days are what it feels like to be unemployed, a feeling that is completely new to me. Our building didn’t have power for the past two days due to a fire underneath the street and it did some damage to the electric supply. When you don’t have power, you can’t really work. Yesterday the traffic was maddening and with no power to boot, I stayed home. Today I drove in thinking there was going to be power and there wasn’t. Now it’s 10:15 and I’m sitting at this computer typing a blog post. This is like not having a job and being able to do whatever you want. The sense of freedom is pretty nice but I don’t really have anything to do. I’ll probably go for a run but for the most part, this would get old fast. I finished the Soprano’s series yesterday (a complete separate post to come) and I will probably start Mad Men but sitting her for hours watching shows can only keep you entertained for so long. It’s just a weird feeling. I’ll probably sit here and create a bunch of posts for this website. Keeps me busy.

My last few days

No this is not a morbid post like the title might suggest. I’m just going to recap a few of the more interesting things that happened to me over the long weekend.

  • I watched Sam’s XC race on Saturday and I have a video of the race that I just need to figure out how to get from my phone to youtube.
  • I bought a new 12′ Acura TL. I was able to turn my car in (even with a cracked windshield), put 500 bucks down and lower my payments by 50 bucks.
  • I played poker for 8 hours on Saturday at Harrah’s Chester and lost a bit over 200 bucks. I played pretty average. I lost a big pot with AK on a KT4 board against the opponents KT. I won a big won with 58 on a 557 board against 68. I lost a big one with KK on a QJ8 board where some maniac who played every hand flopped a straight. Basically it was just a huge waste of time.
  • I shot a 90 at Bella Vista from the Blue Tees which was pretty good. I also had a drive that went 365 yards.
  • I took an elbow to the face playing ball on Sunday that sent me to the ER and required 3 stitches. I probably could have done without them but the cut was pretty deep as my tooth punctured my mouth. I also got a tetanus shot which completely made me feel ill on Monday. My arm was killing me and my body felt so weak. I had flu like symptoms and just felt awful. I still feel pretty bad today.
  • My 3rd fantasy football draft took place last night and I’m pretty sure I drafted a good squad. Peyton Manning dropped to pick 60+ after I already got Romo and now I have great trade value which should give me a huge edge in the league. My last draft is tonight and then the season commences on Thursday.

The Sun is Getting Too Close

I completely understand, when you get older, you just don’t care about fashion. This picture is quite a find though. This was taken at Sam’s XC race and it stars my dad and another man with the same fashion sense. For whatever reason, JC thinks this is a cool look but to find 2 guys who equally appreciate this look, standing at this close of a vicinity, is something else. This is an ok color for a smoking hot girl in a bikini or for someone who wants to be seen in the dark but this color is just pushing it a little too far. Back when I was in grade school I used to rock a neon pink shirt that I thought was totally rad but that was back in the day when I could get away wearing anything. I thought this was a dandy picture though and wanted to share it. Any other people’s parents wear great clothes like these?

Life Update

I’m going to be terminating insertnamesucks.com. I don’t have the motivation to tend to two websites properly. I have enough trouble updating this one. However, instead of letting that site ride off into the sunset, I’m going to update some of the posts and post them on this blog. To the 3 readers of that last website this will be a bit redundant, but I hate letting work go to waste. I might change the domain name of that last site and focus on some really specific category and dedicate a blog to that. We’ll see.

In other news, I went on a long run yesterday and did manage to run 10.5 miles. The pace was at 6:40 mile pace through 8 and that was a pretty good indicator of what shape I’m in. I probably finished the last 2 in 7:30 to 8 pace which was pretty lackluster but I’m about 5-10 lbs over ideal running weight and I can feel it as I get tired. Plus my shorts started digging into my waist and the lining was killing my thighs. Too much info I know. I haven’t officially signed up for the half yet but there are still 18 days to go. I feel like I can put in some good runs between now and then and be ready for it.

I know some people don’t care about fantasy football but some probably do. I had a second 10 person, non ppr, draft last night and I drafted the all-pro team from 2005. I picked Rivers over Manning which may have been a mistake. I gambled on Chris Johnson and took McFadden in the 2nd round. Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd, and Miles Austin make up my WR’s. Owen Daniels at TE and the Packers D. I got Tim Hightower and Rashad Jennings as RB back ups, and took Carolina Steve Smith and Lance Moore as WR back ups. I think this was a better draft than last night and that stems from having the 6th pick instead of the 9th. We’ll see.
