Bands and Songs

My Music Taste

musiccomplementWhen I posted the song 7 Years by Lukas Graham it had 395k views. In about 5 weeks, it now has 4.1 million views. This is hardly patting myself on the back but I know a good song when I hear it. I also listen to the most up to date music which means that I get first crack at identifying songs. The best sources for new music is every Friday to search the new releases on the Spotify section and I particularly like alternativeaddiction and the unofficalalt18countdownplaylists for what Sirius AltNation is playing. I’m out of the pop game so don’t look to me on that. Without further ado, here are some songs.

St Lucia – Help Me Run Away

Only 16k views and released on Jan 21st. I’m picking this as early as possible. The hook is catchy which unfortunately will be the song’s downfall. I’m a big fan of the lyrics though. At around 1:10 you hear the word “America” followed by the lyric, “pulled me out of the shadows” which happens to be my favorite part of the song. St Lucia is a one man band by Jean-Philip Grobler who was born in South Africa. There are other St Lucia songs on Spotify that have upwards of a million views but you may have heard Dancing on Glass which is being played by AltNation.

Panic at the Disco – Impossible Year

Their new album Death of a Bachelor was released a few weeks ago and they had been releasing singles weeks prior so there were only a few songs I hadn’t heard off it and Impossible Year was one. Brandon Urie really nailed it on this song. I love the lyrics and the pace of the song. It’s not going to be one that you’re rocking out on at a party but it’s a fun song to relate to if you are looking to be mopey. Don’t Threaten Me With a Good Time and LA Devotee are other tracks to listen to off the album.

Nobody Wins by Brian Fallon

Brian Fallon went solo from the Gaslight Anthem and came out Nobody Wins. It doesn’t have the same rock feel of Gaslight music but it’s a story type feel of reminiscing about the old days. This song will not make it to radio because it lacks the punch of mainstream feel but I like the song.

Hozier – Someone New

I hear the collective groan. How can someone who is claiming to be up to date on music come out with a song that has been played nonstop for the past 6 months? I would only like to point out that the lyrics are a masterpiece. The song being titled Someone New I interpret as the artist jumping from girl to girl. The line “I fall in love just a little or a little bit everyday with someone new” is saying how there are unique qualities to every person to like. My favorite line of the song, “love with every stranger, the stranger the better.” He’s looking for the most individual, weird character traits and that’s what gets him off. I’ve heard the song hundreds of times and it doesn’t get old for me because I keep thinking about its lyrics and that is what makes Hozier great. I was skeptical at first but really came on board the more I listened.

Most Spotify Followers 2015

spotify-genericThis is the 3rd year running I’ll be updating which artist / band has the most Spotify followers.  The cool part about this is seeing who makes the biggest leaps upwards from past years.  This essentially shows if the artist’s career is trending up or down.  Spotify being the biggest streaming music provider with nearly 80 million listeners is perfect for data dissection.  Onward to the list. 2013 and 2014.

2015 Most Spotify Followers

20. Flo Rida – 3,721,124 followers

flo-rida

Your hair is cut too crisp to be taken seriously.

What the fuck.  How do I start out with Flo Rida?  I looked hard for someone to steal this #20 spot but couldn’t find anyone.  Kanye.  Imagine Dragons.  I’d even take Vance Joy.  Flo Rida, the king of the hook will not go away.  It should be noted that he did go from #5 last year to #20 this year so this is most likely the last time we see him.  Thank heaven.  I’m listening to him right now to get the feel and his words are inaudible and then the hook comes.  Dance music at its finest.  Talent is not found here as he only added 300k followers which is negligible in comparison to the rest of the list.

Beyonce and Blue Ivy

Beyonce sort of makes me sad because she isn’t even trying anymore.  She really doesn’t have to.  She’s a mother to Blue Ivy and her past success will keep her near the top off of reputation alone.  It doesn’t hurt that she’s married to Jay-Z.  An ultimate power couple, unlike Kanye and Kim, who do it the right way with talent.  The song 7/11 has 147 million listens and I remember hearing that being played this year which isn’t so shabby.

18. Nicki Minaj – 3,729,423 followers

nikkiminajNicki failed to change her logo which we know is a no-no.  Having a fake body has given Nicki more than her rat-tat-tat rap.  I’ve read a few interviews about her in Rolling Stone and she seems like a no-nonsense, workaholic business woman.  I respect her game, not her music.

17. Lana Del Ray – 3,824,581 followers

Um, nice hat.

Um, nice hat.

I have virtually nothing to write about Lana Del Ray.  Her album Honeymoon came out in September of this year and she mystifies me that she has this many fans.  There must be a following in some country where all they do is listen to Lana Del Ray to pump up her numbers.  She was 10th last year so she’s going the wrong way.

16. Adele3,849,997 followers

adele25

HALLLLO!

Adele released Hello on Spotify and is currently the 3rd most listened to monthly artist.  Let’s face it, she’s huge.  She not only has a booming singing voice, but she is working with Max Martin who is the king of producing pop.  She is a bit overweight, recently a mother, and identifies with hundreds of million of females everywhere.  Her album isn’t even released on Spotify and Hello already has 293 million listens.  It’s historic.  She added 1.5 million Spotify followers this year alone.  More tracks to be pulled off of 25, I’m sure.

15. Skrillex – 3,913,451 followers

Skrillex_Press_Shot_Spin#9 on the list last year and only added 900,000 followers.  The only news I’m aware of is that Jack Ü is a duo made up of Skrillex and Diplo which is new.  He’s part of the Justin Bieber Remix as well.  I was going to write about Skrillex and Ellie Goulding but it looks like they broke up in 2012 which just means I shouldn’t write any more about Skrillex.

14. Taylor Swift – 3,947,286 followers

Admit it, you got a boob job.

Admit it, you got a boob job.

Not allowing her music on Spotify is such a power move that it’s sickening.  It actually makes me dislike T Swift.  Her hashtag is #justsayyes.  How about doing that to Spotify music?  Your songs are played all over radio so what’s the big deal? You’re just pissed because you’re only going to make $100 million this year instead of $110.   Blank Space, Bad Blood, and Style were here huge smashes this year even though the album 1989 came out in 2014.

13. Bruno Mars – 4,000,306

How did Bruno Mars add 1.4 million Spotify followers to move from 14 to 13 on this chart?  The answer is one song, Uptown Funk with Mark Ronson.

“HE IS THE BEST SINGER I’VE EVER HEARD IN FRONT OF MY FACE. I’VE NEVER BEEN PUSHED THAT HARD VOCALLY. – Adele

12. Calvin Harris – 4,165,949 followers

taylor-swift-3-435Dating Taylor Swift you SOB.  Talk about a career move.  How Deep is Your Love with Disciples (I could have swore it was Ellie) didn’t hurt his already strong reputation either.  Calvin moved from #17 last year to #12, so I’d call that a solid year.  He has also been the highest paid DJ the last 3 years. Plus you got Taylor Swift.  What a life for a guy named after a comic book.

calvinharris

11. Katy Perry 4,175,063 followers

katyperry2You’ve got to change your Spotify logo, Katy.  Who are you paying to do this because they are dropping the ball?  Katy knows that touring is the way to make the big bucks and that’s what she is doing.  No new music for most of the year but Katy stays in the spotlight by doing the Superbowl last January.  No big deal.  When Katy roars, people listen.

katyperry

10. Justin Bieber – 4,291,818 followers

#prayforselena

#prayforselena

Even with the bad boy image, and the hog that dropped, Biebs keeps producing hit jams.  He is currently the most listened to artist with regards to monthly listens.  This is because What Do You Mean and Sorry are blowing up the charts. His album Purpose was even met with positive reviews.  Even if you hate Justin Bieber there is one certainty about him, he produces pop that gets played in clubs everywhere in the world and the ladies love him.

9. One Direction 4,529,257 followers

150413-news-one-directionTalk about tacking on followers.  Adding on a cool 1 million 2 years ago and 2 million this past year, this called doing work.  I’m not a teen girl so my information about Harry Styles and whoever the rest are is going to be weak.  It appears that an album called Made in the AM achieved pretty good results based off of the amount of listens it received.  Wasn’t their rumors of Harry quitting?  Upon further research, it was Zeyn who quit.  Who knew?

8. Drake – 4,630,880 followers

kendall-drake

Drake and Kendall

Adding about 2 million followers and moving from #11 to #8 is a strong year from Drake.  Buoyed by the success of Hotline Bling and the album called What a Time to Be Alive, Drake is earning checks and snapping necks. I read some reports he is seeing Kendall Jenner which is a scary thought.  Rappers and Kardashian’s go together like white on rice.  Didn’t change his logo though which is pretty weak.

7. Avicii –  4,559,028

Avicii-700x352Fire logo.  Last year I wrote about health rumors about Avicii and I have no clue if that is still the case.  I’m sure it’s easy to get caught up in drugs living the DJ life.  I’d say this was a pretty successful year for Avicii considering it would have been impossible to top last year with Wake Me Up and Hey Brother.  His 2015 hits Waiting for Love and The Nights were still decent.  I haven’t listened to all of Stories but I bet I’d enjoy it.

6. Coldplay – 4,758,615

coldplay2A Head Full of Dreams is a very good album.  Adventure of a Lifetime and Hymn for the Weekend are already making waves and I predict Fun and Amazing Day will also produce singles.  This band is the definition of adapting.  I’ve learned to respect their early through today’s music and am not ashamed to say I enjoy Coldplay’s music even if Paul Rudd says they are gay.  Let’s not forget they are performing the 2016 Superbowl which is pretty much the biggest gig on the planet.

5. Eminem – 4,806,521 followers

Eminem's daughter Hailie

Eminem’s daughter Hailie

Still gathering crowds, Eminem is ageless.  He’s actually 43.  His song King’s Never Die was a colloraborative effort with Gwen Stefani done this year.  He also produced the soundtrack for Southpaw.  I like Eminem because his lyrics are well thought out and he spits rhymes in a manner that is unique to himself.  Even though i’m not into his music like I was when I was in high school over a decade ago, I will always give his creative energy the benefit of the doubt.

4. Ed Sheeran – 5,333,595 followers

X_coverThe #1 biggest mover on this list.  He went from the #12 spot this year to #4 and added 2.6 million followers in one year.  How does this red haired, pudge ball do this?  He released an album called X.  He makes the panties of every girl in the world drop.  Have you heard Photograph?  Thinking Out Loud?  I See Fire?  Christ, the album was 24 songs of heartache.  At 24 years old, this Brit dominated 2015 unlike any other.

3. Rihanna – 6,003,159 followers

rihanna1When you are Rihanna you don’t have to do much.  She is working on a new album called Anti which has the songs FourFiveSeconds with Kanye and Paul McCartney and Bitch, Better Have My Money.  She really is the queen and will excel at whatever she puts out because she sings like a cross between Fergie and Jesus.  It should also be noted that she is into ODB and he doesn’t feel the same way.  Her life is waking up in Barbados, getting high, singing some songs, getting drunk, doing whatever the fuck she wants.  Not bad.

2. Maroon 5 – 6,313,086 followers

adam-levine-3-600

Adam Levine on the Voice

Overtaking Rihanna for the #2 spot is Maroon 5.  This happens when you release an album like V which has smashes like Maps, Animals, and Sugar.  Plus Adam Levine is on the Voice which has to soar his popularity as well as the band’s.  It doesn’t hurt that every girl wants his nuts.  I’ve heard him on Howard Stern and he actually seems like a nice guy.  This band is not going anywhere so get used to them by the top.

1. David Guetta – 7,355,889 followers

vinilo_decorativo_logo_david_guetta_by_emilykatycateditions-d6a5i19The DJ who no one knows anything about.  He’s French.  He’s 48.  I have to imagine his age and worldly appeal have a lot to do with his popularity.  He also works with the most famous, talented artists such as Sia, John Legend, Ryan Tedder, and Sam Martin to name a few.  I personally don’t know much about David Guetta.  Apparently 7.3 million people do.

Hozier – 977,173 followers

A highly anticipated 2nd album can only bring Hozier more to the front.  The self-titled album Hozier has wowed the music seen with thoughtful lyrics and songs you want to sing.  I hope he keeps firing on all cylinders and doesn’t fall off like many other artists have when making their 2nd album.

Beatles Get Added To Streaming Services

As of 12:00am Thursday, the Beatles can be streamed. They have been added to Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, Google Play, and Amazon Prime. What impact does this have?

Stream Your Music!

Image: The Beatles pictured on 6th September 1963

Your fans are happy as well.

I’m deleting every MP3 from my hard drive. I can’t think of reasons to have them except when I’m low on data which is rare.  I use Sirius when I’m in my car so I understand that traveling could be an argument to why you shouldn’t delete them. I look at MP3’s as hoarding.  You don’t want to get rid of them because you think at some point in time you’ll need them.  You won’t.

With the Beatles finally making the move, there just aren’t a lot of songs that you don’t have available to stream.  You pay $15 dollars a month, you can stream music from your phone to your wireless speaker, and you are a database of music that has never been felt before.  You have access to new songs on the day of their release.  There is no waiting to get the new CD. You have music at your fingertips.

So lame.

So lame.

Of course you have cunt-inued artists like Adele and Taylor Swift who don’t want to play the game but they are the rare case.  Streaming music is the only growing source of music.  The music industry works like this. You become popular by streaming, make a little money as people play your songs, then make bigger money performing live.  Eliminate the idea that album sales are going to be your main source of revenue.  Fuck paying .99 per download.  Here’s the financial breakdown of industry revenue:

Physical – In 2004 revenue was $12 billion from CD sales.  It has since declined to $2.3 billion in 2015.  Who still buys CD’s?
Streaming – Streaming has grown to $1.9 billion in 2015 and continues to grow.
Digital Downloads – Have averaged around $2 billion for the past 7 years but will decline rapidly once people realize they are retarded for paying for songs and albums.

8c2622e70133d2e80b00e81b353c908657d5e7f6Streaming is the only source that is growing.  Did you know Spotify paid Led Zeppelin millions for the exclusive rights?  Why do you think they are doing this?  Duh.  Recurring revenue is the best way to build a business and you need the most popular artists to bring in new subscribers.  Spotify is up to 20 million paying subscribers and 80 million free users.  That’s 80 million people who are listening to ads which is by far the dumbest waste of time when you consider it is $15 dollars a month.  GET WITH THE PROGRAM.

As a Beatles fan, I’m happy that they have opened up their catalog.  They are one of the world’s greatest bands and now I can listen to songs I never knew existed without spending hundreds of dollars on CD’s. Merry Christmas from The Beatles.

Lukas Graham – 7 Years

I would recommend listening to this song.

Lukas Graham is an actual band and not a person. They are from Denmark and chart topped with this single 7 years. I can only see 2 of their songs on Spotify but I believe they have an album. I’d like to think I have a talent for hearing songs before they blow up and with “only” 395k, I think this one has a way to go. The way the story is told through life is enjoyable.

BOY

Music can bring emotion and I wanted to use this video to trigger it.

I love this video. First off, this is the first time (as far as I know) BOY is playing in front of a United States audience in Brooklyn. They are from Germany and Sweden. The reception is unbelievable.

BOY-press-pic-II-high-by-Debora-MittelstaedtPicture yourself from Germany or Sweden and you’ve produced some music that was good enough to warrant making an album. You have no idea what to expect coming to America. You’ve heard it’s a big place and the land of opportunity but this is only hearsay. Then you start playing your song and HOLY SHIT, the audience can sing along with your music! BOY must have been floored. It’s one of those life moments that are indescribable. This is one of those times I’m super proud of America.

[dropcap]”You’re giving us goosebumps.”[/dropcap]

From Valeska’s mind:

At :53 – “Do they know the words?”
At :57 – They do.
At 1:01 – Uncertainty and joy.
AT 1:08 – Overwhelmed.
At 1:22 – Compose.
At 1:33 – Performance rises.
At 1:58 – Feeling it?
At 3:56 – What just happened?

BOY released an album in September of 2015 and I didn’t hear a word. The video above is not just a sweet moment but it’s a staple of how good their music is. The members of BOY’s names are Valeska Steiner and Sonja Glass. I have no idea what BOY means as a title. I enjoy their music.

BOY-WEWEREHERE-COVERTheir new album is titled We Were Here. I can’t comment on it because I’ve just started listening to it. I want to add though that I don’t enjoy most female artists. I like Alanis Morrisette, Indigo Girls, Natalie Merchant, and a few others I could name if I wanted to think about it further. I think BOY’s sound is filled with emotion and I liked all 8 tracks of Mutual Friends.

Taylor and Katy Have Bad Blood

katy-perry-taylor-swiftI was in my car listening to Bad Blood by Taylor Swift when I started considering the song’s lyrics and how it’s a response to the feud she is having with Katy Perry.

My younger self would have said, “Taylor hates the bitch because Katy hired some of her crew during a tour in an attempt to sabotage it and Taylor wrote a song about her”, and I would have left it at that.  As I’ve gotten older I tend to ask more questions about the reasoning behind why artists do what they do and how this is probably just a ploy to get more listens.  Then I thought, why the fuck am I thinking about this and why do I care?

Why Do I Care About Taylor Swift and Katy Perry?

Taylor and KatyI know neither of them personally and I don’t listen to their music that often, however, I’m fascinated by the lyrics to this song and their meaning.  Does Katy really live with ghosts?  Was there ever really mad love?  What were the exact bullet holes?

The brain power behind labeling it as a response to their “bad blood” is the genius behind the promoters for Taylor Swift. They are getting me to care about this feud even though I shouldn’t. Why are celebrities put on a pedestal where we (the plebeians) care about their every move?

It must be the connection we have to their music.  The opening lyric to Teenage Dream is “You think I’m pretty, without any make up on.” (girls crave for this line)  Shake it Off (a song about not letting what other people say get you down) has 1 BILLION YouTube views.  BABY YOU’RE A FIREWORK!!!!!! (another up-lifter and no I’ve never felt like a plastic bag).  These all relate to human emotion in a very general sense which is why it is felt by so many people and why they have the power they do.

Back To My Car

You'll always have my heart.

You’ll always have my heart.

So now I’m back in my car thinking about all of this while Bad Blood is playing .  Why do I care about Katy Perry and find her magnificent breasts magnetic (why are these words so close?).   Why do I think Taylor Swift is a complete bitch for not letting her music go on Spotify?  Why do I wonder why there is Bad Blood when the answer to this question has precisely 0 meaning in my life.  I honestly don’t know.

This post started with no conclusion and I muddled through it with various observations but no meaning.  This is why I’m a two bit blogger.  I start a post with no end in sight other than the opportunity to post hot pictures of Katy Perry and to make some points about a feud.  Oh well.

FoTC Movie Being Written

Taken from an interview with Jemaine Clement

Do you feel like you’re going to be asked about a “Flight of the Conchords” movie every day for the rest of your life?

We have actually started writing one. But who knows if it will ever be made, we’ve written some notes for some different film ideas. We’re not down to the stage where we’re going, “The film is going to be like this,” it could be this, this, this, this, this.

Some Flight Clips to make your day. Share your favorite in the comments. I think if you just copy the URL into the comment section it actually embeds it.

Remembering N64 Music

4 hours of N64 game music found on one Youtube video.  I’ve time traveled 15 years.

n64hand1It’s hard to express the feelings that come along when I hear music from N64 games.  It immediately brings up memories of sitting in front of a TV holding my N64 controller “the wrong way”.  In comparison to everyone I knew at the time, only Eric Lubowitz could stand up, and exceed, my abilities.    I logged countless hours into many games but Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart, and Super Smash were my favorites.

Top 5 Tracks of N64 Music

Goldeneye – Train
trainFucking Natalya. If you tried to beat the missions on 00 Agent in a certain amount of time, you’d know that Natalya was the bane of Bond’s existence. Anytime you had to replay a level 100 times (or more) to beat the time, you start to get infuriated by the music. The train was a nightmare because you had to laser off the trap door and then run away at the end with Natalya surviving.

Mario Golf – Toad Highlands
maxresdefaultI’ve actually played this game more recently than I did as a kid. I was more of a fan of Hot Shots golf instead of Mario, although I dabbled in both. All the music on the courses is good but I like the chirping in the background on this one. It’s soothing and allows for a cool and collected round of 18.

Super Smash Brothers – Hyrule Castle Music
hyrulecastlen64This was always my favorite track. It was just perfect battle music. KO’ing someone to moon when the music upticks was rewarding. It didn’t hurt that I felt that Hyrule Castle was the best level out of them all.

Mario Kart – Koopa Troopa Beach
koopa-troopa-beach-mushroomI time trialed this board often. Making the jump 3 times to beat your best time was what this game was all about. You’d always be racing your ghost and that just made it more exciting.  This is another game where if you weren’t orange e’ing all over the place, you aren’t that good.

Goldeneye – Facility
Facility-1-How to Unlock: Complete Facility on 00 Agent in 2:05 or less. The beginning of this track brings me right back to the vents. I swear I played this level 1,000 times. Maybe more. This has to be one of the hardest cheats to unlock of all time. I would argue that unless you could unlock this cheat, you weren’t a good Bond player and that eliminated 99% of the population. Strafing was the only way to do it and this is what separates the strong from the weak.

Lil’ Dicky – Professional Rapper

The Anti-Rap = More Real Rap

First and foremost, I’m not a huge Lil Dicky fan even though he grew up in our backyard (Cheltenham). I’ve listened to a few of his tracks and some I enjoy but others I think are tough listening. That being said, Professional Rapper is a great track. Dicky’s self awareness shines through in this song and having Snoop back him up gives it credibility.

If you wanna do this, then you won’t get far acting like a little bitch
Nah, that’s my niche!
Don’t get offended by this, but that’s the market y’all missed
That’s the target I’ll hit
And that’s the heart of my pitch
I wanna do this whole thing different

lil-dicky-philadelphia-tourDicky knows his target and hits it with “funny rap”. It isn’t the traditional rap but he’s creating his own method of delivering content. He hits and misses on various tracks (and 90 minutes is far too long for his album) but even though I don’t consider myself a “dickhead” yet, I’ll give him a chance.

And my favorite line from Snoop

Why does everything you say sound so soft?

The next best track and definitely worth listening too as the hook is tight.
