Jim Harbaugh on Colin Cowherd

I’m not one of those guys who sits at home and watches sports all day so I only heard this interview today after reading Cowherd’s newest book and having him reference it. I’m a Harbaugh fan and Colin is growing on me. Here’s the interview starting at the best part.

I read in the clip comments that Harbaugh doesn’t like Cowherd but that isn’t what it felt like to me. It was that Harbaugh doesn’t give away information. He’s a head coach and it’s in his nature not to share any part of him that might hurt him in the future. Now maybe I’m completely wrong and he hates Cowherd’s guts but I’m not so sure. Here was the tweet after the interview.

And this hilarious tweet posted 2 weeks ago.

Evander Holyfield is The Real Deal

Evander Holyfield

evander-tyson-530x317

Tyson – Holyfield 1

It was 1996 and Mike Tyson was fighting Evander Holyfield for the first time.  I was told that Mike’s favorite punch was trying to hit the tip of his opponent’s nose bone through his brain and this left me fearing for Evander’s life.  Vegas felt the same way as Evander opened as a 20-1 dog only to settle at 6-1.  This wasn’t the ear fight and is considered one of the greatest heavyweight fights of all time when Evander stopped Iron Mike in the 11th.  Evander not only stood up to the baddest man on the planet, but earned his respect and proved he was the better fighter.

You Don't Want to Fight This

You Don’t Want to Fight This

“I knew it was going to be a tough fight.  Fighters know.  Evander, he has an incredible competitive spirit.  He’s not like me.  He’s not going to point in your face and tell you you’re going to lose and it’s going to be a bad ass show.  He’s not going to do that.  But he is that way.  He shows it in the ring.  He’ll be all these things I am, talking I’m going to kill you, but it’s in the ring. He just waits.  That’s just what he is.” – Mike Tyson

30 on 30 – Chasing Tyson

chasing_tysonThis post is obviously inspired by the 30 on 30 called Chasing Tyson and reviewed the years leading up the 2 super fights in ’96 & ’97.  Evander is not just a role model but an athlete who should be studied for his achievements and overcoming many challengs.  Evander wasn’t meant to be a heavyweight.  He came up from the Cruiserweight class and got there through hard work and determination but was outweighed in most fights.  This reduced his knockout power, made his bouts run longer, but no one could ever question Evander’s heart.

Tyson - Holyfield 1991

Tyson – Holyfield 1991

He was soft spoken and didn’t get himself into trouble out of the ring.  People knew he was a great fighter but pretty much didn’t care even when he won the heavyweight championship by beating the same Buster Douglas who beat Mike Tyson in 1990.  The world watched Tyson’s every move because they are drawn to the creation of energy and Evander didn’t do so anywhere but in the ring.  He was going to fight Tyson in November of 1991 when Tyson went to jail for the hotel room incident with a beauty queen.  This should have been the best fight of the decade when both fighters were in their prime (Holyfield 29, Tyson 25).

This is what happens when your opponent knows they can't win.

This is what happens when your opponent knows they can’t win.

In the years following with Tyson in jail, Holyfield went 5-3 with 2 losses to Riddick Bowe and 1 to Michael Moorer.  When Tyson got out in 1995, he fought 4 times that lasted a total of 8 rounds.   This set up the highly anticipated Tyson-Holyfight bout.   Tyson was 30 and Holyfield was already in his mid-30’s.  Holyfield shouldn’t have won on paper but his heart was bigger than the typical fighter.  After this fight Mike showed the greatest respect for Evander and truly realized he had been beaten by a superior boxer.  Sure the 2nd fight didn’t go as planned as Mike bit both of Holyfield’s ears in the 3rd round and got disqualified in one of the most bizarre spots in boxing history.

article-0-1A6EB31600000578-903_634x380

How did I let this happen?

Evander can’t be forgotten though and it seems like he slips through the cracks.  He didn’t have the power as a heavyweight which never gave him that knockout pizzazz.  He held the heavyweight title belt 4 times which has never been done before.  His mild manner kept him out of the spotlight and he ended up having a 27 years fighting career fighting all the way up to age 49.  He ran into some financial difficulties and now does some oddball commercials and stars on Big Brother and tells people that being gay can be fixed.  I still enjoyed learning more about the man who conquered the evil that was Mike Tyson.

In Gronk We Trust

rob-gronkowski.vresize.1200.675.high.94My fantasy teams are starting to fire on all cylinders going 4-0 this week.  I’m resting in 1st place (6-2 & 5-3) in two leagues, 6th in one, and 9 of 10 in the other.  I’m primed for playoff runs in 3 of the 4 and haven’t counted out the other.  It’s important in fantasy to never give up because that’s what weak willed owners do when they feel like luck is not on their side.  These middling weeks are when the allure of fantasy has worn off and people don’t pay as much attention on the waiver wire.  Never say die.

I’m stuck $230 in Draftkings through 8 weeks.  I read that 90% of the profits made on these sites are won by 1.5% of the players.  I’m not in the 1.5%.  Considering the amount of time I spend trying to beat these sites, I’m beginning to realize it’s a pipe dream to make a profit.  Either way I still have fun putting a few entries in the Million.  Losing 40 bucks a week is still reasonable entertainment but I have a feeling that will even out further as the weeks go on and I deposit less money.

sports-betting-money-managementBetting made a full 180 for me.  I’ve deposited exactly $400 dollars into Bovada and just cashed out $350 and have $150 in my account which puts me up $100 on the season.  This is far more impressive than it looks considering the amount of games I’ve bet.  I was riding the Shee’s heater and two separate times I’ve sank my own ship when making a run.  The Eagles cost me $300 last week and this week I dropped 3 straight (Titans, Steelers, and Jets) for $350.  No problem.

I’m aware these posts don’t hit much of the 7 person audience but it’s the halfway point and why the heck not.  I was also going to write about how much of an asset Gronk was but turns out I have him on 3 teams and the one team in 1st doesn’t have him.  Too lazy to change it.

The Sixers Stink!

Trust the Process!

17,000 people turned up to see the Sixers lose by 28 at home:

sixers

hinkie_witnessI didn’t watch this game so my comments are strictly based off of the boxscore.  30% from the field is abysmal.  Isiah Canaan is not an NBA player let along a starter.  Who’s J. Sampson?  Nerlens FG% is what player’s who don’t have a great feel for the basket shoot when there are no other options and he has strong defenders on him (Favors & Gobert).  It should be noted they were down 25 4 minutes into the 3rd so essentially out of the game by halftime.  What a joke.  I will be watching this team close to 0 minutes this year.  I beg others to do the same because what they are doing is disrespectful and horrid to the fans.

DraftKings SMH

You're a snake, you asshole.

This is Ethan Haskell who used the private info.  You’re a snake.

The big story out now is that a mid-level employee of DraftKings placed for 350k in a FanDuel tourney in Week 3.  Things get interesting when it’s leaked that this employee had prior knowledge of player ownership % prior to the tournament starting.  For those who don’t participate in DFS, this matters because us laymen don’t get this info until the contest starts.   Why does this matter?

This week, 49% of people in the DraftKings Millon used Karlos Williams and only 16% chose Devontae Freeman.  If you knew this info ahead of time, you’d probably be more apt to fade Karlos and pick Devontae.  The idea being that you don’t want the same players that everyone else has because you tend to fall further into the pack.  Differentiating your lineup helps tremendously.

Integrity is Questioned

Csuram88 placed in the Top 25 in Week 4. He had 250+ entries in the million.

When gambling is involved, people look to cheat.  This scenario is far worse because it’s actually the house that’s cheating the players.  Not directly but the checks and balances involved for this growing industry are not satisfactory when their employees are using private information for their own personal benefit.  The players are outraged because the sites are already cleaning house that the least they can expect is a fair game and that’s not what they are getting.

Who Cares?

Info from the NYTimes

We hate you and your reaction from all the commercials.

We hate you and your reaction from all the commercials.

Eilers Research, which studies the industry, estimates that daily games will generate around $2.6 billion in entry fees this year and grow 41 percent annually, reaching $14.4 billion in 2020. So high are the potential financial rewards that DraftKings and FanDuel have found eager partners in N.F.L. teams, even as league executives remain staunch opponents of sports betting.

Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys and Robert K. Kraft of the New England Patriots have stakes in DraftKings, which recently struck a three-year deal with the N.F.L. to become a partner of the league’s International Series in Britain, where sports betting is legal. In addition, DraftKings has tapped hundreds of millions of dollars from Fox Sports, and FanDuel has raised similar amounts from investors like Comcast, NBC and KKR.

WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!

It doesn’t feel right.  Not only are the lowly players playing against DraftKing Pros who submit hundreds of entries, but also against employees of rival sites.  What’s weirder is the actual NFL teams have rooting interest in the success of these sites!  The fucking fuck!  This has to compromise some aspect of this “fair” contest.  Oh, Jerry’s personal assistant heard that Christine Michael is going to get all the touches this week and inserted him in his lineup.  Where does it end?

This doesn’t actually effect me because my wagers are minuscule compared to others but I no longer think the playing field of this industry is even.  When I go to a casino, I understand my odds aren’t 50-50.  When I pay DraftKings their fee, I expect to have a fair game.  That is not happening until regulation steps in and corrals these assholes.

The Eagles Players…

STINK!

People are wondering why they are losing with lousy excuses that the NFL figured out Chip’s offensive scheme and the Cowboys knew the plays as they were being called.  Guess what?  It’s not that complicated.  The Eagles offensive players just flat out aren’t that good.  Let’s get started.

962364_1280x720Sam Bradford –  His career record is 18-32-1.  His QB rating for a season has never been higher than 52.  Now what happened to me was when I heard they got Sam Bradford initially I cringed.  When he killed in the pre-season, I had huge hope.  Now I’m back with him being a lousy QB that his record indicates.

RB’s – DeMarco has a hurt hammy which is just another blow.  He hasn’t looked great with 11 yards on 21 carries which is a far cry from an 1,800 yard season.  Sproles looks spry and Matthews is a ghost.  However, I think the bigger problem is…

OL – Peters, Johnson, and the undersized Kelce are the foundation. Allen Babre and Andrwho Gardner stink. Losing Mathis and Herremans is being felt right now.

rileyWR – Easily the worst part of the Eagles offense. Matthews is a 2 not a 1. Agholor has played 2 total games in his career. Riley Cooper is not an NFL player. These players drop passes and don’t get open.

Defense – After a rocky 1st half against the Falcons, they came to play in the 2nd half keeping the game tight. In the 2nd game, they held Dallas to 6 points before giving up the Terrence Williams TD after being on the field the whole game and Byron Maxwell being “exhausted”.  Kiko is out again (shocker) and Maxwell is one of the worst coverage men in the game currently. Good luck.

Week 2 of Football Sucked

These first 2 weeks have been rough.  Where to even begin.  Well, lets start with where I was last year.

Good to know I’m equally bad this year. I didn’t keep track of my win totals betting but I know that I’m down exactly $200 Bovada dollars on NFL and College. My college record is 1-5 which a monkey could pick better and my NFL is not much better.

dklineupI didn’t deposit any cash into Fanduel so I was playing with last year’s money but that’s down to $13 from $50. The only deposit I made into DraftKings since I won $100 bucks on some golf tournament is $100 and my balance is $45 which means I’m down around $150. Even worse is if you look back at that one post I put my lineups in, the team that was my best didn’t even get entered in a tournament which I can’t explain.

Fantasy is not going great as I’m 2-8 this year losing one game by .6 and another by .3. My teams are scoring points but I’m hitting fire in my matchups.

Throw in a week of accurately picking 3! games in a league where all you have to do is pick the team that wins and my hands are being thrown up in the air like WTF.

Obviously football is not an exact science. The idea of predicting events to happen before they do is not as easy as it sounds. Despite every huge winner on the DraftKings commercials, real life isn’t so easy. This season is obviously testing my resolve. On to week 3.

Gronkey Punched

Steelers-Patriots-Football-1You mean I took Gronk in 3 out of 4 drafts with the 4th, the 9th, and the 10th pick?  Was that smart?  Did he score 3 TD’s last night?

What about that draft where I took Tom Brady in the 7th round when it wasn’t clear how many games he was going to be suspended.  Was that a good play?  Do you think my team will be in good shape with Gronk and Brady?

Fantasy football and DFS is not about identifying good players.  Any idiot can tell you Eddie Lacy is going to have a good game.  It’s identifying the players who are head and shoulders better than the rest of the league.   Guys like Gronk, ODB, and LeVeon Bell come to mind.  Amari Cooper is going to be the next one.  You don’t want these guys on your team.  You NEED them.

THE Fantasy Football Post – Week 1

W0gMcI’m not a fantasy guru so take any advice I give at your own expense. I will however be participating in just about every form of football oriented activity from fantasy, to Draftkings, to Fanduel, to eliminator, to survival, and last but not least straight up action on games. It’ll be a wild year.

I’ll start with what I’ve found to be the most interesting in the DFS leagues. Here are my teams for FanDuel and Draftkings. It’s only Tuesday so there will most likely be changes come game time but you can see who I’m looking at with value. May have to click the pictures to see the teams.

DraftKings

Jameis most likely will be subbed out but he’s cheap and better than Tyrod and Cousins.  Bradford is the safer play but then I have to alter every part of the squad.  Value favors Lacy, Martin, and DeMarco at RB.  A-Pete and the ODB team is pure high risk, high reward.  I’m ALL IN on Julio this week with John Brown and Landry as cheap options who I just am looking for a solid outing. The TE in Rodgers is a huge risk but his price is so great to be the starting TE on the Packers. Seattle is the only defensive play this week.
dk

FanDuel

I’ve taken a different route picking more of players who I like to explode and not worrying so much about what is considered value.  I’m staying as cheap as possible with Tyrod and sprinkling a little J. Hill, Lacy, DeMarco, A Pete, C Ivory, and Jamaal.  I’ve tested teams with Davante Adams and A Hurns as cheap options.  ODB, Cooks, Matthews, Cooper, and Julio are all guys I like.  Olsen and Bennet are safer plays with more upside than Rodgers.  Chandler Catanzaro was offered to me as advice and I’d still stick with Seattle.
fd

Week 1 Games

  • bradyCovers has the Pats vs Steelers as virtually a pickem and the line going off at Pat -7 at home.  My general principal is to be on the opposite side of where you think the public is and with this game as an even draw it’s not a game to go crazy on. The Pats offense is going to be shaky with Brady having the entire off season drama, Gronk not playing a game, and the team having pretty much no star RB’s or WR’s.  With this quick take, you’d think to pound the Steelers.  Cool your jets.  LeVeon Bell is suspended and their defense is pretty much non-existent.  AB can’t win this game himself.  I tend to lean towards the Pats – 7.
  • Not this year toots. It's Lindsay Duke. Bortle's old GF.

Not this year toots. It’s Lindsay Duke. Bortle’s old GF.

GB (-6.5 & 67%) vs Bears, Miami (-3.5 & 65%) vs Redskins, and Carolina (-3 & 67%) vs Jags are the heavy action on Covers.   Green Bay vs the Bears is a divisional game at Chicago and the Bears are getting no respect.  I’d take the Bears as a home dog to cover but would stay away.  The Redskins are pretty much a joke this year and Miami is being hyped up as a playoff team.  These don’t always swing the way the public thinks and I expect a close game from Cousins and the Skins at home as another home dog.  Sticking with the trend, I’d bet on the home dog one more time as Jags +3 because the Panthers are going to be a lousy team offensively and the Jags will show an offense that no one has seen before with A Rob, Hurns, and Yeldon.

  • Win me that money.

    Win me that money.

Bucs (-3 & 56%) over Tennessee is going to be my pick of the week.  Jameis will ignite this team with his legs if all else fails.  Not having Mike Evans may sway my vote here but I have no faith in any part of Tennessee.  They have one of the worst defenses in the league, no good RB’s, Kendall Wright is decent, and a QB who is playing for the first time.  Of course you could make this argument about Jameis but the home team is the play in this game.

NFL Win Totals – Over/Under

post_25I’m not putting my own money behind these predictions and neither should you. I thought it would be fun to give a quick blurb and guess whether the O/U will hit and then see how well I did once the season ends. It also shows who are the worst teams in the league and who you should be looking to start your fantasy players against.

Sea – 11 Wins – Over – Their defense is superior to every team in the league.
GB – 11 Wins – Under – The loss of Jordy is substantial.
NE – 10.5 – Over – Reggie Wayne saying the team practices too hard is an indicator of the environment.
Ind – 10.5 – Over – Gore, TY, and Andre Johnson should be enough fire power to maintain.
Den – 10.5 – Under – I’m not sold on CJ Anderson and Peyton is another year older.
Phi – 9.5 – Over – If Bradford and the offense click like expected, this is easy money.
Dal – 9.5 – Under – A strong O-Line won’t help shitty RB’s.
Bal – 9.5 – Under – Seemingly find ways to win with players that I think are bad. Not this year.
NO – 9.0 – Under – Spiller and Ingram are not nearly as dynamic as people think.
Mia – 9.0 – Over – Tannehill is improving and Landry will help at the WR spot. Lamar Miller could shine.
SD – 8.5 – Under – Keenan Allen who is only one player and relying on Melvin Gordon is a crap shoot.
Pit – 8.5 – Over – The offense seems so prolific that this bet should be simple but it won’t be.
NYG – 8.5 – Over – Lot of weapons on offense. I wouldn’t sleep on this team.
KC – 8.5 – Over – Jamaal is a beast and Maclin will help Alex Smith.
Hou – 8.5 – Under – Weak at the QB position. Watts, Wilfork, and Clowney can’t save this team.
Det – 8.5 – Under – Aging stars and unproven rookies lead to disappointment.
Cin – 8.5 – Over – Hill will power this team to victories
Car – 8.5 – Under – No receivers will be their down fall.
Buf – 8.5 – Under – Tyrod Taylor is not an NFL QB.
Atl – 8.5 – Under – Consistently underachieves.
Ari – 8.5 – Over – Palmer and John Brown will spread the offense for Andre Ellington who I think sucks but the defense will prevail in close games
STL – 8.0 – Under – No idea how they will win 8 games with no WR’s and a running game with ???
NYJ – 7.5 – Over – Fitzpatrick and Geno will prove better than expected and Chris Ivory will break out.
Min – 7.5 – Over – Liking this offense with Teddy, AP, Charles Johnson, and Mike Wallace.
Chi – 7.0 – Under – No more B Marsh, an aging forte, and hurtish Alshon is trouble.
Was – 6.5 – Under – Team is in complete disarray with Kirk Cousins who is not nearly as good as people think.
SF – 6.5 – Under – Problems galore with Kapernick regressing and Hyde being average and unproven.
Cle – 6.5 – Under – Moneyman and McCown are not good.
TB – 6.0 – Over – Jameis will improve this team as Doug Martin finds his 2012 form.
OAK – 6.0 – Over – Amari Cooper and Latavius Murray will break out.
Ten – 5.5 – Over – I like Mariota’s chances to improve this team.
Jac – 5.5 – Over – Bortles will improve with A. Robinson and Hearns helping his cause.

16 overs, 16 unders. I wish I knew a little more about the defenses of teams because that factors in tremendously but I don’t have the research or time available.
