Sober Saturday

A rare Saturday entry because I didn’t go out last night and didn’t even have a sip of alcohol. Reason being, my dental implant somehow got loose and that led to the area of the gum to become infected so now I have to take penecillin and then get the implant looked at and possibly removed and replaced. Complete nightmare but there’s really nothing I can do. I was smart though because I went to the dentist only a day or two after I noticed my mouth not being exactly right and obviously had good reason going. So I stayed in and bet on the Sixers and the Knicks which both covered and watched the movie the Town. I went to sleep early and got 10 full hours of sleep and am feeling amazingly good on a Saturday compared to my normal hangover.

Just a quick review on the Town. I thought it was a pretty good movie but completely unrealistic. I can’t understand the whole dating part of the movie between Claire and Doug. Just seemed really dumb. Why is a bank robber starting a relationship with a key witness in the bank he robbed. I think Jeremy Renner is an awesome actor for being a little guy and was easily the best actor in the movie. I don’t really understand all the rave reviews of the movie because it didn’t really have a great storyline. I thought it was kind of stereotypical of a bank heist movie. Ck4 commented that it reminded him of Set it Off and I have to agree. I also watched Extract which was a Mike Judge movie with Joel Bateman, Mila Kunis, Ben Affleck, and Kristen Wiig. The movie had an Office Space feel to it and Joel Bateman was eerily similar to Ron Livingston. I was entertained but certainly can’t say this was a fantastic movie. It had some funny parts when the partner called the employees dingus and dingleberry’s but it only grossed 10 million and with a cast like that it had to lose money. I’m not sure what they are thinking when they produce this movie because I can’t imagine they thought a lot of people would want to see this movie.

Just a few random thoughts. I bought what were called “boxers” on the label and when I open the pack they feel more like boxer briefs. I don’t like how they cling to my legs and suffocate my nuts.
Jess Baker told me she liked my Jersey Shore post and I always wonder the type of people who just refuse to like the show. Have they ever watched it? Do the people who think that the show is moronic understand that the people who like it KNOW that that show is moronic. I understand that when so many people like something it’s a natural tendency to not want to be part of the crowd. The way these characters interact though is really fascinating because it’s such an unusual social environment and their attitudes make for such wild encounters. Good clean fun.
My final observation is that when I stayed in Friday night not drinking or doing anything but watching sports and movies, I get the feeling way more people do this than I think. I literally get wasted and go to the bars 50 out of 52 weekends both Friday and Saturday and this was just a completely different experience. However, I did like it. I slept for 10 hours of real sleep and not drunk sleep. I woke up today feeling sober and good. Although I don’t have any good stories and nothing entertaining happened, I’m not sure that’s necessary for anything. Sort of sad that it takes me this long to realize this but I’m getting there.

The Real Resolutions

I wrote a few that are longer term and require some effort.  Here are some things that I should change that really require minimal effort but are difficult to achieve.

  • Flossing daily.  I’m about a 2 flosser a week currently but it was usually never the till a year or two ago and my dentist yelled at me and I just decided I’ll try to do a better job.  I could obviously make it happen but I always forget on weekends and that’s about 3/7 of the week and the other half is whenever I remember.  No reason for bleeding gums
  • Using fluoride.  I just hate it beyond belief.  It tastes horrible and then you can’t eat for 30 minutes after and the minute I have to swish it around is usually the worst minute of my day.  Restoring enamel can suck my left nut.
  • Changing my diet and eating healthier, in conjunction with not spending for most meals.  The majority of meals I eat are taken from the freezer, put in the oven, and cooked for 30 minutes.  Never any veggies or fruits.  It’s fried chicken or pizza and I could do a better job mixing it up a bit.  However I will add that I don’t really drink soda and I very rarely eat dessert like ice cream or brownies.  It’s funny when Jess Baker or Jill bring baked goods they just hang out because I just don’t partake in that.  I also should make breakfast or bring lunch because I the cash I spend on lunch certainly adds up when I do it 10x a week.
  • Keeping things cleaner and more organized.   There’s really no excuse to having things filthy and out of place.  People who lack self pride and have no discipline are the culprits and even though I’m aware of this trait, I still could do a better job.  I don’t have a spotless attitude but things that are neat just tend to have a better outcome and a little effort over time makes this happen.
  • Keep a daily log.  It’s not unusual the world log is in blog but I think if I had a notepad in my pocket and wrote down things I thought about during the day, I’d have more things to check up on and more concise thoughts.  JC would be the ultimate influence on this bullet point and I agree with him as I’ve gotten older, if you write it down, it has a better chance of getting done.
  • Read more books and do more research.  It’s embarrassing when you don’t know who the Secretary of State is (Hilary Clinton) or Bush Sr.’s VP (Dan Quayle).  Just stupid stuff is completely at my fingertips and when I don’t know something or just want to learn about something, it’s just a keyboard away.  I’m completely honest that my history is awful and I usually just reason “who really cares?”  But it’s more the big picture that to understand situations and make decisions, it’s better to have more information then less.  Sort of off reasoning from my original posing of a question but I think it’s somewhat related.
  • Just caring more.  Instead of plopping down in front of the TV watching the Jersey Shore, opening books or learning about something constructive has to have much more impact on my future.  Sure it’s awesome to know if Vinnie is banging Snooki but in the bigger picture, this won’t have much impact.  I will still watch it more but finding a passion or hobby of something you really like to do is how one can become successful.

That’s it.  Simple things that I’ve arrived at after 27 years of this Earth.  Aside from getting into a more constructive daily routine, that’s all I got.  I’ll keep you posted.

Start being good at things.

First let me describe what I have to go through to get back into form.  After waking up 10 times in 45 minute intervals last night trying to sleep and waking up in cold sweats or hot flashes, I had a rough night sleeping (I think pregnant women only get hot flashes).  I spend today wishing I was someone else at work and literally drinking as much water as possible because these ill feelings are brought on by dehydration.   When I got back home I literally sat in front of the TV complaining because you need people to know you feel like shit so they don’t bother you.  I watched Cool Runnings and felt inspired by it.  I’ve seen this movie before but certain parts brought on chills.  Specifically the part when Junior tells Yul he can live in Buckingham palace if he sets his mind to it and the ending scene is obviously moving.  Just a good all around movie.

When Junior is looking in front of the mirror with Yul Brenner and Yul asks what do you see and he can’t reply and Yul steps in and says “I see pride, I see power, I see a bad mother who don’t take no crap from no one.”  So after another year down the drain I looked in the mirror.  I still have a deformed lip from the 13 stitches that occurred 6 months ago.  I don’t think people can see it so well but I notice it everyday and try living with something like that and it’s just not fun knowing that people probably are like “wtf is on your lip.”  So we will tally up 2010 as another year of something moronic I did when I was wasted.  I also notice my now 5 teeth capped after re-breaking the capping on two that I previously broke.  This whole debacle set me back 5k and unfortunately the lesson still hasn’t been learned.  It’s sort of a shame too because I do other things well like keeping in good shape and function properly at work.  My diet is still pretty poor but it doesn’t seem to have such a negative effect on my life.   The New Years Resolution “to start being good at things,” becomes the titles of this post.

I couple of New Years goals that come to mind:

  • Breaking 60 minutes in the 10 mile Broad Street Run.  I was just under 61 in 2009.  A dud last year at 62+.
  • Playing a sub 80 round of golf.  I hit 84 from the blues at Bucks County this year and if I just put forth the effort to practice, this is still a stretch.  Putting and chipping specifically need work to make this a reality as my driving gives me an absolute shot at this goal.
  • How about being a viable scoring option in Basketball.  My inability to shoot or make lay ups is honestly a complete waste of growing up playing basketball.  Devoting some time to hitting the gym and getting in pick up games is really all this takes.
  • Weighing in at 170 would be losing a few pounds that is only there because I consume 30 beers a weekend.  To think how much even better shape I would be in if I took care of my body is really something I’m considering at my final few years of peak athleticism.
  • Not losing a single dollar at a casino or sports gambling?!?  This goal is also eaten alive by alcohol consumption but at my age of 27, I’ve completely learned that there is no money to be made doing this and to think otherwise is kidding yourself.
  • And this goal, as easy as it may seem, to get through weekend #1 sober.  I’m confident I can make it through Wed & Thurs but a full thru to Friday and Saturday is such a rare occurrence, that I might just do it to do it and see what type of lifestyle accustoms it.

The Jkash Cleanse

I can’t really explain why but when I woke up on New Year’s Day, I felt like a million bucks.  No hangover, no ill feelings, just felt awesome.  Awesome is the new word of the year by the way.  Now comparing that day to yesterday and slowly  creeping into today, we have a different story.  After going to the bar in the afternoon with Hafer, Hetrick, the Sheee, CK4, Jkash to watch the PSU game, I think I had 3 or 4 shots of scotch-whiskey and a couple of beers.  Then went back to the apt and slept till 8 and then started playing beer pong, then went to Mad River where I was getting double Rum and Cokes and as Chad can give an eye witness, I wasn’t making it back without his help.  So I woke up yesterday feeling like death and that has pretty much continued into this morning.  I went to sleep at 9:30 last night and even that wasn’t enough to make me feel better.

As the title states, I’m going to see how long I can go without drinking for a while to see if I can restore some order to my dysfunctional life.  The last entry I wrote was on Wednesday so I guess I have to at least update on a few things that have taken place.  Thursday I found some random girl to make out with but nothing else transpired, not even a number.  Friday was New Years and we had some people over.  Jeff and Sam came over with their GF’s which was a pleasant surprise.  Rock stopped by too which is good because we don’t see each other very often.  The night went off pretty much without a hitch aside from people coming in and trying to take a bottle, but I wasn’t involved.  That brings me to where I started writing in paragraph 1.   I made contact with the 38 year old an sent some retard text messages like “do you want to ride and train” and “are you wearing crotchless panties” so I’m pretty sure that’s not going anywhere.  I think it was a joke to begin with anyway as getting myself involved in a situation like that is ludicrous.

Blog traffic reverted to it’s previous ways and there will be no selling out.  My life needs to get back on track after a while of goofing around.  I may try to just lock myself in my room and only going out to go to the gym.  We’ll see what happens this weekend and if I can even pull off the Jkash cleanse.  I know it’s best for me and you’d think eventually I’d be able to live a normal, sober life but it hasn’t happened.  I know this has also been a pretty random, everywhere post with no real content but I’m just not in the right state of mind to be entertaining or exciting.  So that’s it.

Amusing Pick Up

Ck4 and I went to Kildare’s for their happy hour and I got their wings and had a few of their specialty beers. Ck4 had to leave at 7:30 because he had a business call at 8 and as we are about to leave this lady comes up and orders a car bomb right next to me. I had ordered a shot of Jameson before I left just for the fun of it and her and I were making small talk and ended up doing the drink together. Ck4 said he had to go and I had to decide if I wanted to leave or amuse myself by talking to this woman. Well naturally I decided to stay. Get this baggage. She’s 38 and has 3 children. She’s still married in New York but her husband is married to another women in PA. Now the girl that her husband married is her lesbian lover. To top it off, she tells me that she was laid off from her job at as a teacher, she’s writing a book on fashion, and she was just boned by one of her students recently. Now I couldn’t tell if she was banged earlier in the day or earlier in the week but she was telling me how much it hurt because she hadn’t been fucked in 6 months and how tight it was even after having 3 kids. She wasn’t too bad looking but she had that trashy feel to her. I obviously got her number…

Magic Hat Howl vs Sam Adams Winter Lager

I was searching around some beer forums and read how some of these people write reviews and I refuse to write a review like that. Apparently the five categories are appearance, drinkability, smell, taste, and mouthfeel. My categories are does it get you drunk and do I enjoy drinking it to get drunk.

I purchased the Magic Hat Howl about 3 weeks ago. The artwork on the case and bottle is cool looking and I’ve had some Magic Hat’s like in the past that I’ve enjoyed. I’ve also had the #9 and Circus Boy, neither of which I cared for. The Howl is a black lager that is 4.6% abv. Bottom line, I didn’t enjoy the case. Yes I finished it, but no I wasn’t enjoying the beer, just drinking it for it’s alcohol. It just wasn’t a good tasting beer and at such a low abv, there’s no excuse for that. Another miss on Magic Hat’s list for me.

At 5.5% abv, this beer will get you drunk. I just find this a great tasting beer that goes down easy. On Sunday I drank 7 of them in 4 hours and ended up having to take a nap. This isn’t your let’s get fucked up beer as it tends to make you go to sleep than party til the morning hours. This is just a very smooth lager that I will order hands down over 80% of other beers. There is one drawback, it makes you fart like no other. I can’t explain it but I will attest to this last statement.

Couple Days Off

So I didn’t go to work today which gave me a nice little 4 day vacation. It’s given me some time to catch up on some reading and watching TV. My family got together on Christmas and did a little gift exchange which I think can be ruled as a success. Sam got me a case of beer, the Soprano’s first season, and some other intangibles. Jeff got me a dozen Pro V’s which I’m sure to shank in the woods first few times out. I got Jeff a Beer making kit, Sam a wireless mouse for a laptop that was mouseless, First Season of Dexter for my mom, a shaving kit for my dad, and I got Laura a scarf from Calvin Klein which got me to 100 dollars and a 10 percent savings. Sorry Laura. We had the Schmidts over and then saw some relatives and it was a Christmas that went off without a hitch.

The next day I went off to Barnes and Nobel and bought some books. I got the Girl Who Kicked the Hornets nest (which annoyingly is only a hardback and Laura wasn’t enthusiastic on reborrowing from her friend), the first Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, and a translated version of the Canterbury tales (I read these were entertaining). I finished Harry Potter last night which was under 5 hours of reading which isn’t much when you have nothing to do. It’s geared to the simple, teenage mind but I see where it’s mass fan appeal stems from. I haven’t decided whether I’ll finish the series or not but I’ll consider it. I’m going to start Alice tonight and see where that takes me.

I finished the first season of Modern Family and the show really grew on me. I always puts myself beyond network Sitcoms but this cast of characters has something that draws you into liking them. I honestly have nothing bad to say about the characters like how annoying one is or how I wish they’d off that one. Every scene with Gloria is captivating for obvioius reasons, Phil’s humor is priceless, and I found Alex to be my favorite character even with her limited speaking roles. Two thumbs up from me on this show and I’m going to watch the 2nd season on Hulu.

No Monday entry would be complete without some mention of Fantasy Football which is sadly coming to an end. The Wild Turkey’s won the Shiva Bowl against Ck4 in undramatic fashion blowing his team out by over 100 points. I’ve never had any success in Evan’s league so it feels good to get off the shnied. Just to point out though, this is the 2nd out of 3 years that a Stortz has taking down the championship. I have a trophy that I’m going to doll up and make it the TC for an entire year. I’ll have pictures in a soon to be post. I lost to Sam Levin in the ESPN league which has no 2nd place prize. For being as inept as he is, he won the regular season, most points, and the playoffs. I’ll take down Bill and Bud’s league if Roddy White and Garrett Hartley go for less than 25 points which is about a 50/50. Not to leave out, I beat Chad in the 3/4 game too in Baker’s league. Sorry CK4, I haven’t beat you in 4 years?!? Owned.

I’ve gone to the gym early in the last few days and have been feeling moderately healthy. I’ve cut both treadmills runs short though because I was feeling lousy. I notice my strength increasing though on the select machines I use. I should have a good week though of working out with not much to do. Half day at work tomorrow and then I’ll probably go to the gym and see if there are any pick up games. With the roads like they are because of the inconvience of a snow storm, combined with the holiday season, I don’t expect much action at work and it’s still good time for taking it easy. I haven’t been black out drunk in a while now so my stories are lacking. I’ll update when I have something to tell.

To the Sheee

I’m writing this entry for the Sheee who is stuck at work on Christmas Eve. Yesterday he asked “why am I the only one who has to work on Christmas eve?” Like a dick, I answered “because your a peasant.” He brushed it off but I’m not insensitive to other people and no one like to be called a peasant. Bottom line Sheee, you work for one of the most respectable banks on the planet and even if they grind you tooth and nail, it’ll become a prestigious position. Much more recognizable than an employee at Stortz Tools. So just so you know I respect the position and the amount of time that goes into working there.

Now, I got ridiculously wasted last night at Mad River because I didn’t have to work today. Kristen and the Noise was playing and I love Kristen. She has a tight body and can sing amazingly. She doesn’t quite top Sofia Vergera on my list of girls I love but I wouldn’t say no if anyone asked me to see them. Lindsay, my #1, shared with Lauren, was working and this is another girl I love. Mad River gets expensive after there specials and it’s nice to know someone working there who knows how to make a good mind eraser. I actually did an experiment of taking a Vitamin B supplement to help cure a hangover and the dehydration factor and it barely worked. I still woke up at 12:30 and didn’t know how I got to my bed. I think I remember having fun…

Today is Christmas Eve and I have nothing to do. I bought all my presents and am considering going to the Gym to play some BBall even though I’m not exactly feeling up to it. Maybe I’ll go home and spend time with my family because it’s that time of the year. To all the people who read my blog, thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy writing it. Thanks again.

Nothing Doing

I went to the gym yesterday and ran 5 miles in 29:15. The funny thing about treadmills is that they aren’t all the same. LA fitness specifically has one turbocharged machine that is labeled with a 95sp or something like that and it lets you speed the machine past the usual max of 12.0 mph. Not only is this machine the fastest but it’s also the most stable. If I can’t get this one particular machine, then I’m usually not too happy. Point being that I’m not really sure if that time is legit or not because it’s a treadmill, but I’ve used a lot of treadmills and the one I used is the most consistent and best, so I give that time some credibility. I also want to document it so if I ever look back at where I was at 27 physically, that’s not half bad for an old man. I know I’m a treadmill snob. I’ll get on the machine, start it up and if the console shakes or the cup holder makes noise, I get off and find a new one. I also sweat more than any individual in the entire gym. After I get done with the treadmill, it looks like it’s just been through the car wash. It’s amazing too that not once have I ever fallen off or ever felt that I was near falling. I wonder what the maximum speed is that I can lose footing and keep myself up with my hands if it came to that. Enough treadmill talk.

Holiday break is upon most people and it’s a fun time to spend time relaxing, reading books, watching movies, and staying fit. Instead of all those enjoyable activities, I usually spend mine buying cases of beer, getting drunk, trying to pick up girls, and then dealing with hangovers. Some girls recently ask me if I’m a player and I just have to laugh at the accusation. Yes I do go out fairly often to the bar to attempt to pick up females but my success ratio is pathetic that I can’t possibly be a player. This next break though is a good time to go out though and I’ll see if I can note any conquests in this blog. Honestly though I just go out to have a good time and anything that happens, it just happens. Usually I’m too drunk to be coherent anyway. Now if people wanted to hold that against me, no argument from me there.

This is a short day at work and then I’m going to get myself a nice JRP cheese steak, hit the gym, and then prepare for doing nothing. Kristen and the Noise is at Mad River tonight and Big Ben is getting ready to lay a goose egg. CK4, good luck in the championship game but the Championship Wild Turkeys are going to gobble gobble their way to victory. The line was -14.5 for the Steelers / Panthers but I think it’s too many points for a team that put up 19 points vs Buffalo, 13 vs Baltimore, 23 vs Cincy, and 17 vs the Jets in their last 4 games. Carolina stinks I know, but people will lean towards the Steelers and you want to against the public is what an article I read in the Wall St said today.

Amusing Myself

I finished the Girl Who Played With Fire and although the book wasn’t as good as the first, it was a decent read. The ending is completely ridiculous and the way things came together was a little odd but I couldn’t put it down for the last 100 pages or so despite it being absurd. I haven’t decided if I want to read the 3rd in the series but probably will just to pass some time over this holiday break. Also I like to have a good grasp on what is popular at the present time, even though these books are years old. I would go into detail on what I liked or disliked about the book but most people aren’t going to care.

On the same note of paying attention to what people are watching, Bake lent me the DVD series of Modern Family. Everyone always says how good of a show it is and I’ve watched the first 6 episodes to test it out. First off, it’s network TV and its jokes don’t really fit my crude, dirty humor but the show is entertaining. I wouldn’t put this show anywhere above shows like The League or Californication, but it has its moments. Sofia Vergera is the best character far and away and it has nothing to do with her mediocre acting. Since it’s network TV she is usually covered up by non-revealing clothing but it really makes you look forward to shots of her in her gym clothes or anything else low cut. It’s actually better than seeing her naked because it leaves it all to the imagination. I could probably write more on Sofia but just to keep this readable, the show is well written and I give a lot of credit for finding funny things to happen without any lewdness or profane material. I don’t find the kids all that funny. Cam and Mitchell have their moments. Phil has probably become one of my favorite characters only cause he’s really awkward and he crushes hard on Gloria and I like how they do that subtlety. Claire is a good backbone and I think they make Jay’s character too hard but it’s good for the show.

Just another quick TV update after I read an article about the 20 worst shows of the year. They had Glee up on the list and I have to agree wholeheartedly. The show really took a dive with all these themed episodes and the storylines just got lost and stupid. I haven’t watched an episode in months now and can’t say that I really miss it. The had Boardwalk Empire on the list as well and I am also going to agree with this. I know CK4 thought this was an awesome show but it really just wasn’t compared to things like the Wire. It was slow and boring at times and the more I think about the season, the more I agreed with the articles review. They had Treme on there as well and I see how it made the list. I watched it in it’s first season and the action just wasn’t there. A horrible show that made their list was Running Wilde with Will Arnette and Keri Russel. I heard Will on Howard Stern before it was set to air and you could hear it in his voice that he was basically begging people to like the series. I watched the pilot and there wasn’t one funny scene and it was awful. Shows that I intend to watch that people like, The Soprano’s has passed my life and I’ll try to watch it in it’s entirety. I also want to watch Breaking Bad and Mad Men.

Things are just moving along otherwise. I managed to take 2nd place in a 180 man tourny for 400 bucks which I promptly split in half playing some bigger stake games. I wrote yesterday that I cashed out 500 in my sports betting account which is still off of my initial 50 dollar deposit in week 1 of the NFL which if I do say so myself, is pretty impressive. I still have 100+ dollars remaining in Bodog even after a pretty atrocious pick of the Sixers last night. It’s still profit so I’m not complaining but due to some poor bankroll management recently, I still have a ways to go to make up for some losses. Money just swirls around me from winning to losing and it probably should be my key New Years Resolution. Whether it’s poker, sports betting, stock markets, strip clubs, I tend to err more to the spending side then the saving side and at my ever increasing age, it’s probably time to wise up a bit. Alcohol tends to lead to these wild decisions and that obviously goes hand in hand with my last sentence. If you read my prior 427 posts you’ll see that this isn’t the first time I’ve wrote this and if I went back to exactly one year ago today, I’m sure it says the same thing. However I am who I am and even though I have my faults, there is some good behind my ways. What good is it? That’s a question for the ages.
