Being a Champion

I am not a champion. The past few days a perfect examples of that. As you continue to get older and mature you learn things about your body that show up through repeated habits. After a long day of drinking on Saturday (I will add though that at no point was I out of control which is a wonderful improvement), the Shee and I decided to play golf on Sunday. Long days of drinking dehydrate your body and you don’t recover in a simple chug of a 32 oz Gatorade.

Golf started when I blasted a nice drive up the middle and then a sweet 4 iron to about 50 yards on a longish par 5. I found it odd that I was able to hit some good shots even though I didn’t feel full strength. After a birdie on 8 and a bogey on 9 I came in at 45 before things fell apart. I slammed out a 9 on 10 and an 8 on 11 to discombobulate the round. I just started completely sucking and didn’t even finish a full round because we left early due to slow play ahead. The point of this though was that I’m better than a 45 and far better than a 50+ on the back. The only way that happens is when my body is unable to perform physically. This is the whole point of the story. If you want to perform your best, your treat your body like it deserves to be treated. I can’t be surprised that I suck when I don’t feel well. I remember one time in Softball I was 0-8 for the day. Attribute this to alcohol abuse. It just doesn’t happen when I play at full strength.

The title of this posts explains why I’ll never be a champion. A champion doesn’t let himself fall into the trap of alcohol like I do. Now just to continue my realistic opinion of myself, even if it weren’t for alcohol, I would never be one of the top people in just about anything. After reading the Advanced Theory book and the authors ability to name about 100 so called advanced artists, you see the percentages are unlikely to really breakthrough and make a name for yourself. A great line from that book though was that usually the advanced are the people with the greatest talents and are the hardest workers. When I translate this to my life I find myself trying hard at various things and never really excelling at any one thing. Jack of all trades, master of none. There’s nothing wrong with it but it’s my self evaluation of myself. I believe a post like this is a realistic though.

Made in America

So I’ve obviously been updating this blog less often than past time. An obvious reason for this is because I’ve stopped writing about what I’m doing. I could write a post every hour about what I did the last hour. Since I’ve eliminated these types of posts, I have less to write about. The reason for why I’ve stopped those types of posts is because I’ve been doing them for years and they just aren’t that good. HOWEVER, I will write about things I do that are actually interesting, not going to mall to buy a new pair of shoes (if those posts interest you than you might have to take a step back and observe your own life)(I will however write that I think I have good opinions on those types of things).

I spent $91.26 on a Made in America ticket this past Saturday that headlined with Jay-Z, Skrillex, Passion Pit, and Calvin Harris. Jeff and I drove to the city on Friday night to avoid any oddball traffic on Saturday. We went to a bar called Time Friday night which was pretty funny. It was a decent time highlighted by something unusual towards the end where I said something to this hot girl (I believe it was inaudible) and then she looked at me and then it seemed like the entire room was just completely staring at me. I honestly had no idea what the hell was going on so I just turned around and left but it was seriously bizarre because I don’t even think I said anything.

We got up at 9 and got some breakfast and then headed over to the Shee’s place to drink some beers and break a piece of couch that didn’t fit into his apartment. We did that and played some caps before heading back to 210 where Jeff forgot his phone and then made our way to Steve’s for some more beers. I think we got to the concert at 3:30 and they didn’t even check my ticket to get in. 24 oz beers were selling for $11.00 but I don’t think I had more than 2. The whole day was a complete and utter blur. Not in that I don’t remember anything but it just went by quickly. The techno tent was certainly an interesting site. After Jay-Z performed people started heading out and we went over to Morgan’s Pier for a little while. At that point I couldn’t drink anymore because I was malnourished and just went back home at 1:30 or so. Nothing really crazy happened and I still sit here thinking that this isn’t that great of a post. I do think people find these somewhat readable though because they didn’t experience it.

Blog Update

I haven’t had a post in about a week and I think that’s a good thing. I’ve spent some time thinking of different posts that I think are way, way better than the bs I usually write about. For all those that tune in daily, I’m curious to know how the human brain works and why you continue to check back. How long would it take of no posts before you stop checking? My intentions though are to spend some time this weekend and just bust out about 5 entries and unleash them all at the same time. That way you get bombarded by my material and hopefully come out of that experience saying “those were pretty good.”

Nothing Doing

There’s honestly nothing going on right now to write about. Jeff returned from New Zealand which is somewhat newsworthy for people inside my family but not for my blog. I’ve been playing basketball a fair amount which isn’t exciting. I haven’t really been doing a whole lot aside from the normal day to day work, play, sleep. My mind isn’t coming up with interesting blog topics because I’m not devoting anytime to thinking about it. Normally things just pop in my head but that hasn’t been happening. It’s a server dry spell and I don’t even care. Readership might be dropping but I don’t think many people read it anyway. If I drop from 8 people reading to 7, I think it’ll be alright.

Freddie Mercury is Dead!

In a classic question by my Dad while reading a section on Tribute bands in the USA Today Life section, “which one of these guys is Freddie Mercury?” “Freddie Mercury has been dead for 20 years.” “He has?” Now for me this seems like pretty general knowledge that the lead singer from one of the top 25 rock bands of all time died from Aids. How you could have been alive since 1991 and not have had this little tidbit come up is astounding. After thinking about it for a few more moments, I began to think that maybe to someone who has no interest in music this could slip by. If you quizzed me on whether random politicians were dead or alive, I’m sure I’d look like a fool. Ted Kennedy? Yassar Arafat? It’s the same type of perception deal that comes along with most things. Just because you think it’s obvious because you know, doesn’t mean that everyone knows. JC couldn’t give one iota about music. I used iota, which is a very small quantity, because we were playing golf and the word jiffy was used, which is a very short time. To me it’s just one of those things that one of your goals in life is to gather (and retain) as much information as possible. In a sense you could say this post was used to call out my dad, but in reality it’s to point out that we’re all human beings and know things we care about.

Latest Chinese Dog Craze

A new trend has EXPLODED in China’s upper class where people are
transforming their pets into miniature versions of animals or just dye them in
crazy colors. Pandas seem to be a big hit and are obviously their favorite.
This has become a huge industry and people are spending THOUSANDS on
professional hair dyes, salon cuts, accessories… you name it!

Adapting

It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change. – Charles Darwin

The older I get, the more I agree with this statement. I read in one of Malcolm Gladwell’s book that a few IQ points don’t make a difference once you reach a certain level. Don’t get me wrong when I say that we are all similar in intelligence because that would be far from the truth, but the point is that you don’t have to be the smartest person in the world to excel in something. The key to almost everything lies in the quote above. Whether it be business, personal relationships, or leisure activities, the key is adapting.

You could be the smartest person in the world but if you are stubborn and always think your way is the best, most likely you’ll be overtaken at some point. The year 2012 is much different than even the year 2002. What worked back then might not work now. The information that was paramount then could have changed 10 times already. That’s why it’s important to never let any one thought dominate the way you go about things. My golf game is a great example. I constantly ask people who are better than me for tips or information on how I can improve. I explain my problems and than hear their answers. This doesn’t mean that what they say is the gospel because it might be the way they look at it and that might now correlate with how I think about things. Constantly having an open mind though and listening and trying and working are the keys to getting better. It’s not me saying, “this is how I taught myself so this is how I do it.” That might work for Lebron but most of us aren’t fortunate to be have his skills.

Also, just because it was working, doesn’t mean it will still work. Companies see this all the time. They create something new and groundbreaking only to find that at a certain point down the road things can change overnight. If you can’t adapt (Kodak, Blockbuster, Blackberry), you will sink. Don’t forget, it’s not just adapting but maintaining. Some people do something stupid, try to learn from it, and then just revert right back to where they were. I think most of us are guilty of this because it’s easier for us. The best equipped people on this Earth are the ones who think on their feet and do their best to work with all their information and go about it with a good attitude.

Target Audience

I rec’d this message on Facebook (while I’m at work). This person is one of Sam’s friends. Any guesses?

tom
start blogging
i have a shitty job where i sit at a desk 8 hours a day and do 40 solid minutes of work

I have to imagine that this is probably the sole reason people check my webpage. I know I continue to disappoint with my lack of updates. As I was rolling through my archives I had some months I busted out 60 posts. Now I’m lucky to hit 20. It’s not that I’m not doing awesome things but they are just the same awesome things that I’m always doing. Which technically just make them less awesome. I have a few good ideas for posts but what’s been happening is I just sit down to write them and I find myself rushing through them (like this one except this idea for a post was pretty shitty). I do however take note of my poor effort and will do a better job moving forward. I want to point out that I like the addressing of me in the first message. It’s very pointed and direct. Tom. Start blogging. I probably would have capitalized it and used punctuation but kids these days. Who’s in for Trivia tonight?

Doing

A few things I’ve done:
Shot an 84 at Lulu Country Club (38 front with a breakfast ball on 1)
Shot Sam in the face with a Roman Candle after understanding the strength of Natty Ice
Rolled a 190 in bowling
Gained some thugs respect at Mondauk
Got a lap dance from a hot ass stripper named Patience who wants to be a CPA
Lost to Gourlay heads up in a poker tournament.

That’s been my life in a nutshell.

Staying Active

The one part of my life I haven’t been active with is this blog. I’m just not coming up with good material. That being the case (and still not having much material) I’ll give a run down of my weekend starting with my round of golf with Evan and Raven’s Claw. We played from the blue tees and there was almost nobody on the course because of the heat. I think we finished in just a shade over 3 hours. I finished with an 88 and probably drove the ball the best all season. I came home and went for a 4 mile run and was just toast. I passed out at 10pm only to wake up the next day at 8.

I then ran 8 miles down the powerline trails in Horsham which was a good start to the day. Next I went to Mondauk to play 3 competitive games of basketball and probably played the best I have all year. I wasn’t missing lay ups and even had a jump shot outside of 15 feet. After some relaxing by the pool with JKash, I went to PJ’s for the night which also turned out to be a pretty good time.

I woke up at 8 today to play a round of golf with CK4 at Bucks County CC. We teed off at 9 and finished by 1. I shot an 84 from the blues and Ck4 also had some memorable moments. The first being an unprecedented 6 putt on hole number 4. I started feeling bad after he was going back and forth 3 times but 6 was unheard of. Also he had a 18th hole debacle where I think he hit 7 or 8 balls off the tee and only the last one went found. I also failed to mention that he lost a sleeve of balls on hole number 1 which was a fantastic start. We had a good time though. I carded 2 birdies and even had a 3rd opp on 15 from 10 feet where I got a bogey. I could have easily been in the 70’s for the round.

I crashed after that and just woke up half an hour ago. I figured I’d update this blog even though I myself find this entry pretty pointless. Hopefully you don’t.
