Who Listens to this Shit?

Taylor Swifts Vagina

Taylor Swift Camel Toe

Taylor Swift – Shake It Off
The song is about the media getting on her shit and her shaking it off. The second verse speaks to her doing her own thing and the critics don’t see that. Wild dance moves try to distract from the terrible song. That’s seriously all the substance to the song. Don’t worry, it’ll be listened to by millions of fans and brainwash everyone.  I forgot to add a picture of Taylor Swift’s camel toe for SEO.

Katy Perry – This Is How We Do
Do what? I listened to the whole song and still have no idea what we are actually doing. A few of the lyrics:
Playing ping pong all night long, everything’s all neon and hazy – I find no double entendre here so we just play ping pong
This is how we do, yeah, chilling, laid back – This is pretty much not doing
Day drinking at the Wildcats, sucking real bad at Mariah Carey-oke – I’ve heard this lame joke before but can’t put my finger on it
This goes out to all you people going to bed with a ten and waking up with a two – Odd lyric.

What You Should Be Listening To

I understand people have their own preference of music and it’s wrong to judge but these songs are so far ahead of that pop that it’s not even close.  Follow my AltNation playlist for the most up to date alternative.

Trolling the Music Net

I basically beg people to follow my AltNation playlist on Spotify because I consistently add songs to my playlist weeks before they hit the radio full fledged. Either way, I have a lot of time in my life to listen to the radio and have a pretty good handle on new music. I lost it today when I was listening to Radio 104.5 and heard these 3 songs in a row: Pretender by Foo Fighters, Panic Switch by Silversun Pickups, and then Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance. Here are the years released respectively 2007, 2009, 2006. I’m sorry but this is the worst type of genre for a radio station to play. These songs were popular 5 years ago, we got sick of them when they were popular, and 5 years isn’t enough time to bring them back. I tweeted Radio 104.5.

People like hearing songs that are either 1) New or 2) Old songs that never die. If I ever have to hear Electric Feel one more time I’m jumping into a pool with a TV to get a real electric feel. I know the radio station is limited to what they can play but AltNation on Sirius consistently dominates Radio 104.5 with new music. Which leads me to my next situation.

I’m not sure why stations haven’t pick up Battle Cry by Imagine Dragons but it’s a decent song and from my understanding the first single since Night Visions. I decided to post this on the Alt Nation Facebook page. I tried to use @ImagineDragons and embed the video in the post and it kept coming up saying that it couldn’t be posted. I tried it 5 times with the same message before giving up. Little did I know, it was posting each time. This led to this little back and forth.

Obviously I don’t care about Gina or Oscar but there is a certain satisfaction to fucking with people on the internet. I’m pretty sure there is no downside and unlimited upside. My friend even called me today to discuss my internet tiff which almost made me feel like a real man coming back from a real fight. I’ll continue these shenanigans because they make for good entertainment.

Horrible Songs You Shouldn’t Listen To

Ahh, the power of a title.  If I put “awesome songs I know you want to listen to”, no one would listen to them.  At least this way maybe you won’t even read this text and skip straight to songs which I think are worth listens.  I should also point out that I don’t claim to be on the cutting edge because I hear these songs on the radio and if they get them, they aren’t cutting edge.

Future Islands – Seasons (Waiting On You) – The sole purpose I made this post. It may be 4 months old but it’s the first I’m hearing of it. The singer’s voice is awesome.

Maroon 5 – Maps – This was premiered 2 days ago. I’m not a huge Maroon 5 fan but the song is worth a listen

Regina Spektor – You’ve Got Time – I started watching Orange is the New Black and this is the title song. Came out a year ago but it’s not bad.

Wolfgang – Black River – A band that gets overlooked. Consistently putting out quality.

Wild Cub – Colour – The follow up to Thunder Clatter.

Panama Wedding – Uma – This song is growing on me.

Killer Soundtrack Songs

Wonderful songs are found on movie soundtracks.  I even create playlists on Spotify that mimic soundtracks exactly.  Here are a few songs that I urge you to listen to if you never have.

Mary’s Prayer by Danny Wilson
From the Something About Mary soundtrack, a Farrelly brothers movie, which usually have dynamite soundtracks.  Lining up with the main characters name adds to a great song. A Jeff favorite.

If You Were Here by Thompson Twins
I will always watch 16 Candles if it is on. The Samantha Baker / Jake Ryan romance is about as good as it gets. The kiss scene across the birthday cake is amped up with the fabulous song by the Thompson Twins.

Bad Reputation by Freedy Johnston
Another Farrelly brothers soundtrack from the movie Kingpin. It’s hard not to pick Showdown by ELO during the bowling scene and Bill Murray’s wild hair.

Everybody’s Talkin by Harry Nilsson
Midnight Cowboy is a decent movie but it produced an A+ song. It’s used many times throughout the movie and has a nice rhythm to it.

The World Ain’t Slowing Down by Ellis Paul
Round it out with the 3rd Farrelly brother movie Me, Myself, and Irene. Awesome song that relates to everyone at some time or another.

Too Much EDM Hurts the Brain

edmThis past week I’ve been listening to the Avicii Spotify radio station and came across music that I liked. I’ve never gave this type of music a shot before and figured it couldn’t hurt to expand my knowledge. First and foremost, I hardly know anything about the genre so I’m not even sure if the “kids” call it EDM anymore or if it is going by some other names like trance, techno, or house music. Either way I figured Avicii is one of the most popular with crushing hits like Hey Brother and Wake Me Up so why not start there.  I’d guess he’s not considered pure because of how mainstream he’s become and the real fans hate the sell outs. Start with the most popular though seemed reasonable.

wnd_8a8ab6f8c73bec43d142bd97b98afa03The station plays the main artists like Avicii, David Guetta, DeadMau5, Tiesto, and Calvin Harris.   Considering these are some of the biggest names in the industry, I was exposed to the biggest hits as well as deeper cuts.  To my surprise, I’d already heard most of the tracks without even realizing it.  Herein lies the problem.  What I’d already heard were the hits (which are no doubt catchy) and the lesser songs flat out aren’t worth listening to. On most 2nd level tracks, lyrics don’t separate these songs so they go strictly on beat and feel.  It all sounds similar to me and out of the hundred or so songs I listened to, I liked less than 10%

[dropcap background=”yes” color=”#333333″]The Drop- The exact moment when you realize you’re about to have diarrhea.   AKA, when the beat drops.

[/dropcap]

pillsNow the songs I did like, I really liked.  If I didn’t think they were incredible songs I wouldn’t have listened to as many as I did.  I think what separated the good from the bad for me was the hooks and beat changes used in the music.  I needed some lyrics to keep my attention.  If it was pure beat, I fell into a trance of not caring, and not listening, to what was playing.  A confusing aspect to me was that songs get remade a handful of times by many artists and then who knows what remix is worth listening to. Avicii remixed his own previous album which is just remixing your own songs?!? Confusing to say the least.

I’ve created a playlist on Spotify that shares the songs I liked but I know most people won’t use it so I’ll add a few Youtube clips. Based on the amount of views on the songs I posted, it’s clear I’m not present in this music.  If DJ Weens is reading this post, all suggestions would be appreciated.

Music in the House

I had a few experiences this past weekend at bars that play music and have some thoughts about what is played.  There was also a jukebox at one of the bars which is a good way to test out how an audience of unknowns reacts to music.

Sing-A-Longs

42-25434331_685Songs that everyone knows are considered sing-a-long songs.  Say It Ain’t So by Weezer is a prime example.  There are a couple of facets for a song to reach sing-a-long status.  #1 is that people need to know the words.  Not every word but the primary chorus is a must.  It takes time for people to learn songs like this so these types fall in the older music category beginning with early 00’s and everything before.  This is prime white people music and activity.  I was at Time on Friday night and Green Day’s Welcome to Paradise came on and the black dude next to me was like, “what the fuck is this?”  I also think it’s funny if a hip hop song is played and there’s a word that sounds like Pooh’s friend, do you sing it?

EDM

db1I have grown to like EDM.  I don’t do the drugs that generally make this scene better but even still, the science behind creating this music is fascinating to me.  The control of the beats per minute and how the crowd reacts is awesome.  I also find that this is great drunk music, as in, the drunker I get the more I like it.  Unfortunately it helps if you have some “rage” dance moves but even with a simple head bob or fist pound, you can fit in.  Another anecdote from the weekend, Weens was hammered at Morgan’s Pier and fits into th EDM scene and in my mind kills it on the dance floor.  Overbearing perhaps but you could tell it wasn’t his first time in this atmosphere.

Pop

taylor-swift-dancing-3-newMy least favorite music category.  Smith’s on Friday night was a relevant example to playing a lot of pop.  If Timber comes on, you are in a pop bar.  Girls love this music because it’s what they are listening to currently but I find the music difficult on the ears and even harder to dance to.  This kind of music is cringe worthy and I usually run to the bar.  I also have a dislike for early 2000’s pop like the Backstreet Boys.  Personal opinion, I feel like a homo singing a long to anything by the Backside Boys.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Hip Hop

phaset-bl17-resize-LST079864I don’t go to too many places that solely play Hip Hop but I’m out of the game of what’s popular in this community.  Back when it was Snoop, Dre, Tupac, and Biggie, I knew some music.  Since 2000, I couldn’t name a song.  Even when the songs from the aforementioned artist come on, I can’t really get into it.  For me it isn’t bar music.

Classic Rock

don_t_stop_believing-1You won’t hear much Classic Rock in a bar unless it is a white person, sitting down bar.  Bars that have this setting sometimes have a jukebox and that’s when people will play older songs that they like.  I’ll give a quick suggestion, don’t play Don’t Stop Believing by Journey.  Overplayed classic rocks songs aren’t just overplayed at this point, they are played out.  A personal bar favorite that I played on Friday was One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer because it’s 8 minutes long and a fine drinking song.  That’s the key, if it makes you want to drink, it should be played.

A Space Oddity

spaceoddityI’ve had 2 Spotify coincidences that are unbelievable.  I couldn’t make this stuff up.  Evan sends Jeff and I an email titled, “This is Major Wevs to Stortz Control”.  This is the body.

“Pretty cool vid – last day available.  Apparently Bowie to Bowie only gave him rights for 1 year or something like that.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaOC9danxNo”

The Oddity

So I click on the link in the email and start watching a video by Chris Hadfield singing Space Oddity. He’s an actual astronaut who went to space.  All is normal until I hear a repeat of Space Oddity playing through my speakers.  What the fuck is that repeat?  I thought Jeff must have clicked on Evan’s link and I was hearing an echo but I verified that the sound was coming through my speaker.  Much to my amazement, my The Best Of Pink Floyd: A Fool in the Door radio station (best station I’ve ever had on Spotify by the way) started playing Space Oddity.   What.  The.  Fuck.  You are telling me that Spotify started playing the same exact song that I was listening to through a randomly timed link sent by my friend.  The odds to this are astronomical.

The 2nd occurrence came when I heard the song Stolen Dance by Milky Chance on AltNation.  It wasn’t available on Spotify at the time so I listened to the song on YouTube for a while.  The song had 30million views and had been out for over a year.  Well what do you think happened?  Spotify added Stolen Dance to its database.  This is incredible that after a year of not adding the song, they add it 2 days after I notice it isn’t on there.  I should also add that Milky Chance is quite a duo from Germany and worth listening to all of the 4 songs on Spotify. For the lazy and those who don’t have Spotify. Absolutely worth a listen.

A New Way of Music Success

Who can forget getting to the end of a download and having it stall.

Who can forget getting to the end of a download and having it stall.

2014 – Burying the CD

My music knowledge is above average.  I know a little about a lot and have a decent finger on the pulse of today’s music.  I’m by no means an expert but I do know that the internet has changed the way music is delivered to the public’s ear.  Applications and software like Spotify, Pandora, Youtube, and Itunes have decimated album sales and a new way of identifying popularity should be put in place.  Views and listens should dominate instead of album sales.

A declining trend

A declining trend

The top selling album in 2013 was Justin Timberlakes “20/20 Experience” which sold 2.43 million copies.  This was the lowest total in the 22 years since Soundscan has been tracking sales.  When I first read this number I wondered what was the breakdown of what is considered an album sale.  The answer is that vinyl is 2% of album sales in the U.S; digital albums comprise 40.6% and the CD is 57.2%.  Digital sales dropped for the first time EVER in 2013.  More info on the music industry of 2013 can be found in this Billboard year end review.  This isn’t surprising considering the aforementioned apps are delivering music on a subscription basis and eliminating album sales.  Why would you buy an album for 10 dollars when you can get a month of Spotify and listen to a million times more music for a month?

Just Got Paid

Just Got Paid

Let’s time travel back to the year 2000.  Can you guess the #1 selling album and how many units it sold?  N’ Sync was the hottest boy band and said Bye Bye Bye to the 9 million CD’s sold mark.  This was the tip of the iceberg when it came to CD sales for a single year.  The best selling album of all-time is Michael Jackson’s Thriller and it has moved 51-65 million copies.  These numbers are staggering when compared to the pathetic 2.4 million copies the best selling album of 2013 sold.  With these current numbers being so out of touch with reality, the system must be changed to downloads and listens.

2014 – All Hail Spotify and Youtube

Spotify and YouTube are the best ways to listen to music currently.  Spotify’s catalog is insanely big and they have new music updated quicker then you can run to the store and get it.  YouTube is still the premier place to display new music in video format.  Everything else should be considered secondary.  I’ll add a quick footnote that ITunes tracks downloads and I assume this is an OK measure but it isn’t free so why you’d pay for a single or album download, I have no idea.  The smartest music listeners pay a monthly subscription to Spotify to listen to their music.  You can listen to any song, any time, any device.

Cd's are going the way of listeners like this.

Cd’s are going the way of listeners like this.

Therefore, Spotify listens and Youtube views should be a new music standard.  The songs should have a cumulative number and that should be the new ranking.  Fuck album sales.  No one gives a shit that the Frozen Soundtrack has moved 2.3 million units when compared to the astronomical number of listens and views.   What is far more interesting is that Katy Perry’s Dark Horse has 270 million YouTube views and 113 million Spotify listens.   The problem is that I can’t find who is tracking this information on a week by week basis.   I can see total views, but let’s get a count of this on a week by week to really understand what music is being listened to.  Someone needs to do this!  Rolling Stone, read this post and start finding a way to track these two networks and publish this info.  Far and away better than album sales.

Katy Perry Crowd Surfing

Found this gem on Reddit. This is what happens when you are top heavy. I would have loved to be underneath her and allowed to put my hands all over that body. Actually this was the best comment on Reddit.

She panicked and forgot basic crowd-surfing technique.

You can see the moment when she realizes she’s crowd surfing in a dress and she tucks up her legs to protect her modesty. Instantly all her weight is now resting on half as many people as it should be; without proper weight distribution she plunges through the crowd.

Lesson learned: keep your body spread out to maximize support, and go with the flow. Expect gropings because they’re unavoidable.

My hands go where?

My hands go where?
