My Least Human Quality

Deaths this year – Prince, Bowie, George Martin (the Beatles, not RR), Garry Shandling, and even Chyna passed this year. There are millions of more people who have died in 2016. I don’t care.

princeWhen people die it’s like the world ended…for them. Let’s me go jump into Lake Minnetonka with my Walkman and really experience Prince’s music now that he’s no longer living. I probably haven’t dusted the tape off since 1986 but now that Prince is gone, it’s time I really start to show my support. When people die the flood gates open for all the phonies of the world to act like it’s the biggest event since sliced bread.

Dude, there's like, something on your head.

Dude, there’s like, something on your head.

This isn’t saying that I have no emotion towards death, just not celebrity death. If I haven’t met them on more than one occasion or had a conversation lasting longer than “hello”, I’m not going to go apeshit once they pass away. I literally had the Billboards on for 1 minute last Sunday when the Weeknd came up and dedicated the award to Prince. I have no problem with someone saying that a dead person was influential, but I wouldn’t break down and cry over it. Weeknd said he didn’t even know the man. I also don’t think he broke down and cried but that would be my point if he did.

hanseljpgObviously if my immediate family and friends passed, I would 180 this entire stance but I don’t grasp how people get choked up when people they have never met before die. The same way we look at the below quote as ridiculous, is how celebs dying makes me feel. Prince. Prince would be another hero. I never knew him or listened to the music, but the fact that he existed and made it, I respect that.

I wasn’t like every other kid, you know, who dreams about being an astronaut, I was always more interested in what bark was made out of on a tree. Richard Gere’s a real hero of mine. Sting. Sting would be another person who’s a hero. The music he’s created over the years, I don’t really listen to it, but the fact that he’s making it, I respect that. I care desperately about what I do. Do I know what product I’m selling? No. Do I know what I’m doing today? No. But I’m here, and I’m gonna give it my best shot.

Hard Work is the Key to Life

Do you think you’ll ever retire?
I don’t know what that is. There’s always some way to serve. And I never felt like I had a job. –
Prince

howardandstevemartinSome people are born with talent and other’s work for it. On an interview with Howard Stern, Steve Martin explained how he isn’t naturally funny and it was hard work that vaulted him to stardom. Tweaking each piece of his act until it was perfect was his motive. I read similar thoughts from Prince in an article for Rolling Stone.

prince

“The Kid” in Purple Rain

Prince had to be reminded to eat. He’d rather not interrupt his work than eat. This is the devotion you have to have to your craft in order to rise to the highest levels. It’s the same story over and over again. Grow up with some struggle with your family, fall in love with whatever it is you were born to do, don’t stop doing it until you are the best. Literally spend every second of every day performing your craft. How hard can it be?

Unfortunately not many people are given the opportunity to do this. Life gets in the way. The large majority of us may be moderately talented but not ungodly gifted. So it is possible for us moderately talented people to achieve next level status we just have to stop eating.

Put those advertising dollars to work.

There’s this other little problem that’s called work. I love when people say, “I love my job. It hardly feels like work because it’s what I love to do.” Most of us don’t feel that way. I like that my job gives me the flexibility of a non-corporate environment but I’d rather spend my time Photoshopping ridiculous pictures onto celebrities and writing about news stories. All I’d have to do is take a few writing classes and blog incessantly. I bet I could get more readers than I have currently.

Is there any point to this post. Not really except that it’s the same idea for success. Work hard. Give your entire being to your work. It’ll take months, years, or decades, but eventually you’ll see the fruits of your labor as long as you aren’t a pussy and understand what work is. Most don’t.

The People-less World

2 examples from this weekend that show that activities are better when it’s just your group, and no one else around.

  • ThinkstockPhotos-513447301On Friday, the forecast called for rain and I was looking to play golf with Bud and Chris. We arrived at the course and the employee said he was expecting heavy showers shortly and didn’t think it was a great idea to play. We decided to give it a try considering we drove an hour to get there. The rain was on and off for the first 6 holes and then stopped completely. We had the entire course to ourselves for the final 12 holes and it was a golf dream come true. No waiting. Perfect pace of play. No distractions. We walked the course in 3 hours. You can’t ask for a better round of golf.
  • pOt0dk7On Saturday, I bowled with Sam and Jordan. Any experienced person working the register staggers the lanes when it’s not that crowded. We were one of the first people there and they put us on 11. In the next 15 minutes, the cashier put groups on 16, 15, 14, 13, and 12 leaving the middle lanes completely open. Instead of bowling next to Liu Kang and his 2 little ninja’s, we asked to move lanes and bowled with no one else around until we were just about finished. Bowling can be fine when you are surrounded by people who enjoy improving but can suck when you have little tykes using the Stegosaurus and bumpers.

Both examples point out how it’s better to be doing activities when it isn’t crowded. Aside from a bar, and even this has to have an ideal number, more people equals less fun. More waiting. More time wasted. More chance of idiots.

2016-04-24-1461512457-3567665-Driverlesscar1433This leads me to the next topic which is going to be driver-less cars using the GPS to take you from A to B. No more Uber where you have an insane driver who is blasting music and going 100 mph. Based off of previous experiences, I won’t be against not having to deal with a person taking me places. As I mentioned, dealing with people you don’t want to is not one of the joys of life. This will be my future mantra, the less people = the more fun.

Setting a Standard

After reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values, I developed a better understanding of quality. Quality is how good or bad something is. In life, you should always be striving for the best quality of any and everything.

Self

Lion-and-KittenI chose the Arnold featured image because it speaks to exactly what it means by achieving the greatest quality body. Your body is your vehicle through this life. Those that don’t maintain it immediately speak to their value system. We all aren’t going to be Arnold but setting a high standard for yourself and your body is as good a place as any to start.

User Comments

One thing I’ve seen going to the gym, is you never see people laughing or making jokes on your expense, for lets say, not lifting enough or not doing the exercises perfectly. This is because all those people that look great now and lift 100kg, they had to work hard to get there and know how it feels to be a newcomer.

This might seem shallow, but this is exactly the reason why I (and probably many others) don’t find overweight women attractive. No one wants to be fat, if you are that tells me that either you don’t care about your own well-being enough to work out, or you do care but are too lazy to work for a change. Either way I value personal health and work ethic too much to be in a relationship with someone that doesn’t. (And let’s face it, being obese isn’t attractive either)

# of Views

tdy_or_charlie_150501.today-inline-vid-featured-desktopDepending on how many views or comments content gets speaks to the quality of the subject. If I write a post that generates 0 comments, I can be fairly certain that I didn’t do a very good job. Videos on YouTube that get millions of views aren’t randomly getting these views. There is a compelling factor to these videos which is driving said traffic. Being able to know ahead of time whether content will go viral is an incredible skill that shows your ability to see quality. The smart minority of civilization strive to understand this.

Betting

oosthuizen-swing

The perfect golf swing

Betting is a good way of showing that you can identify quality. Betting on sports is more of a “fuck you Vegas” than it is about making money. I want to prove that I’m smarter than the odds makers. This is obviously not the case as I’ve lost thousands of dollars sports betting over my lifetime but I don’t play over my head, so I got that going for me. This is why you see me recommending golfers like Louie and horses like Exaggerator. I see quality and want to make a name for myself as being able to identifying quality. Alas, I seem very good at picking 2nd place which is a great way to lose money.

My High Standard

7m1uI0NAll I want to do is bowl a 300 and I’ll be satisfied. I’m not going out to bowl and have a good time (which I do anyway). I want to start every game with a string of strikes until eventually I roll 12 in a row. I’m well aware that I’m not going to be a professional bowler but I’m also not trying to be a squid. Once I get tired of bowling, I’ll move on to another endeavor but for now, I like to bowl to continuously improve my standard. I try to do this with all that I do.

You Didn’t Ask For It, You Got It

Google Maps is Better Than Waze

Clear as day.

Clear as day.

Apple users just muttered, “you’re an idiot” but hear me out. First of all, know that Waze is owned by Google. Most IPhones don’t have Google Maps installed on them and Waze is significantly better than Apple Maps, so IPhone users are going to be biased towards Waze because they haven’t even tried Google Maps (what else is new).

interfacesI’ve seen both in action and prefer Google Maps because I don’t care much about the social interaction that Waze users revel about. Contemplating that people in their cars are reaching for their phones and tapping in that they just passed a police officer so that hundreds of other users can also be distracted by their phones to agree with this sighting is beyond me. From my understanding, Waze does provide a more sophisticated means of wrapping around traffic which I’m sure is great if you want to save 2 minutes off your 30 minute commute.

The real reason I’m dropping the hammer on Waze is that it’s strictly for driving. I want an app that does it all and I can’t begin to tell you how important Google Maps was when I was abroad. Seeing a map, entering a destination, and then having walking directions was incredibly useful. I’ve also driven hundreds of miles on road trips and have never, ever found Google Maps to provide false information. It’s reliable and rarely misses its time estimates.

User comment:

They try too hard to turn themselves to a social app while all I want to do is get from point A to B…

Exactly this. I have no interest in chatting via that app, not to mention I’m, you know, driving. Give me the alerts and allow me to post new ones, and that’s it. That’s what makes Waze useful.

Goose Island Makes Soft Beer

Goose_Island_BrewpubGoose Island was bought by AB InBev in 2011 for 38.8 million dollars and is no longer considered a craft brewery. AB stands for Anheuser Busch which make Budweiser, Corona, and Stella. What I truly don’t like is that Goose Island is still trying act like a craft brew. When I drink a Corona or a Bud, I know what I’m getting. It’s not faking me out that it’s being produced by a billion dollar company. I’d still drink their IPA if it was the best available choice but I’d choose Yuengling over it.  This goes hand in hand with the ridiculous notion of the beer named Budweiser to go by the name “America” this summer.

User comment:

“Sir, we’ve been slowly losing market share for years to craft brewers, what will we do?”
“Buy them out.”
“We tried that sir, it doesn’t seem to have worked. What can we do?!”
“I have one word for you: NATIONALISM”

The Sugarhouse is Turning Into a Good Casino

sugarhouse-casino-exterior2-900VP-587x0I’m proud to say at least I know that my money is being put to good use. I visited the Sugarhouse for my monthly donation last week and was surprised to see an increased amount of security which is a good move. It keeps the trash out. They also added a Geno’s Cheesesteaks and a Tacconelli’s for pizza to the main dining areas as well as a sit down steak house. The poker room has been moved out of the tent into an actual room and is fine to play at. The bottom line is that after 3 years of taken people’s money, they have expanded (a huge extra section and parking garage have been added) into what I consider is Philly’s #1 casino destination. It still has a way to go, don’t get me wrong, but improvements are happening at a rapid pace and I don’t see them stopping.

Here’s a live cam of the construction.

Running Fad Finally Fades

To quote the WSJ, “The running boom is over. Blame the millennials.THANK GOD!

This WSJ piece, How Millennials Ended the Running Boom, explains why races are seeing a decline in participants. A few tidbits:

  • MjAxMy04OGM1YjdkYjQ3ZTQ4MDY4The number of finishers dropped 9% in 2015. 2013 reached a peak of 19 million runners and the number dropped to 17 million this year.
  • The biggest drop in finishers are between the ages of 18-34. The reason being that millennials are fueling their fit need by other means like crossfit, boot-camp, weight lifting, and ballet.
  • More than 48 million people said they ran at least once in 2015. I laughed at this one.
  • The untimed Color Run dropped to 780,000 participants from 975,000 a year earlier.
  • Millennials are more interested in overall health and a new experience than in identifying a particular activity.

Runners are Finally Falling Off

JC-Docklands-HR-30-1140x570People who take running seriously can’t stand fake runners. When they show up in full running gear and their gut is hanging over their shorts, we know you’re a poser. Being fake is the #1 reason why people won’t like you and this sport has millions because it’s so easy to do and get away with it. For people who really like running, we do it because we enjoy it and it keeps us in shape. You don’t sign up for a race and call yourself a runner. It’s nice to see this finally winding down.

399762_447438601975817_1357129758_nLet’s face it, anyone can run. Ian McGrath turned himself into a decent runner. The participation in these races grew out of control with every Tom, Dick, and Harry signing up for a run. It became the “in” thing to do because not only was it a social event, but it made you look like you took your health seriously. Now all these other vipers are popping up with their boxes and dojos and drawing runners away. I’m cool with it. It makes me happy that someone would rather push a sled with 0 lbs on it 10 ft than run 4 people wide on a 6ft track. Hallelujah.

The Ellipsis

This is a real life example that I thought was ridiculous. Here is an email back and forth I had with a customer who we sold some product to. I’m also going to point out that I’m not a grammar wizard so it’s mere observation because I’m sure a grammar Nazi could pick my shit apart at will.

maxresdefaultI wrote:
Vicki,
Can you verify that this is the size that you would like?

She wrote:
This is correct….thanks.

I wrote:
Sorry I spelled your named incorrectly. It’s a 170-T. This is what you’ve ordered in the past so I was making sure.

She Wrote:
That is what is says on the box…but I also show T170B? But the sizes are the same.

She wrote:
Thanks…and I didn’t even notice….

The Misuse of an Ellipsis

ellipsisImmediately after I hit send on my first email I looked back at her e-mail and noticed I misspelled her name. I make it a practice to never screw this up so I was immediately going to fire off another email acknowledging when I received her email saying “this is correct” with her ellipsis. In the back of my mind I considered that she was using the ellipsis as a way of pointing out that I spelled her name wrong, but this was probably reaching. Now when she uses her ellipsis in the 2nd email, I can she has no idea how to use an ellipsis. The capital “but” after a question mark is also not proper. At the end, the ellipsis is being tossed around like a red headed step child.

I did quick research on the Ellipsis and this sums up my findings.

i84eqNow, on to the other use of ellipses that you frequently see in e-mail: the ellipsis that’s used to indicate a pause or a break in the writer’s train of thought. “Ellipsis points suggest faltering or fragmented speech accompanied by confusion, insecurity, distress, or uncertainty.”

You should not replace all normal punctuation with ellipses. You should not allow the sweet lure of ellipses to muddle your ability to write a complete sentence. To quote the book Grammar for Dummies, “Using ellipses in this way can get annoying really fast.”

Whenever I write, I do it as I think. Like that comma after write, I just paused in my thought and added a comma. Same thing there. I honestly have no idea what the rules are for commas or the rest of grammar which is why I don’t fuck with it. I’m not using exclamation points unless my mind was blown. I certainly am not using an ellipsis unless I’m 100% positive it works in the sentence. When I know I don’t know it, I don’t use it.

Hot Girl Complains About Millenials

First things first, this video doesn’t get 5.7 million views if she’s not hot.

Why People Over the Age of 40 Say Our Generation Sucks

  • 9v34qWe are just existing and not contributing anything to society.  – Let’s not forget we are revolutionizing the way people listen to music (Spotify), pay for goods (Venmo), connect (Facebook) and transportation (Uber ((technically the founders are 37 & 39 but who’s counting)).
  • Our generation doesn’t have the basic manners that include, “No Ma’am, and Yes Ma’am.” – This isn’t generational. It’s universal.
  • download-17We don’t hold the door open for ladies, much less our elders anymore. – Ladies want to be treated like everyone else and old people are living longer and longer that they are becoming more independent at their old ages.
  • We listen to obscene music that degrades women and pretty much glorifies drugs and crime. – Business 101, give the people what they want.
  • We start to cuss now to prove a point. –  This is how people can tell your serious.
  • We use words like Bae to describe someone we love. – Not sure how this is much different than Honeybunch or Stud Muffin.
  • We idolize people like Kim Kardashian and shame people like Tim Tebow. – Dat ass thoWe only shame Tebow because he’s a shitty QB.
  • We’re lazy. We’re really entitled. – This blog has been quite a bit of work for absolutely nothing.
  • We want to make a lot of money and have free education but we’re not willing to put in the work. – Most of my friends have jobs.
  • boomersWe spend more time online making friends and less time building relationships. Our relationship appearance on Facebook is more valuable than the foundation it’s actually built on. –  It’s called living in 2016.
  • Our idea of standing up for something we believe in means going on Facebook and posting a status as your opinion. – I could write it in my diary and feel really good about my thoughts or I could share them with people to get a collective view and advance my opinions based off of further interaction.
  • We believe the number of followers we have reflects who we are as a person. – It’s called influence.
  • We don’t respect our elders. We don’t even respect our country. – I have no idea what this means unless you consider Donald Trump becoming our President a reference to the second part.
  • We’re stepping on our flag instead of stepping up to volunteer – Wat?
  • We mock the men and women who are are fighting for us but we praise the people that are fighting each other. – Wat?
  • We are more divided as a country than ever before and I think our generation has a lot to do with that. – Wat?
  • Everything that used to be frowned upon, is now being celebrated. – Wat?
  • Nothing has value because we take advantage of everything. – Wat?
  • MJarMERWe have more opportunity to succeed than any generation before us yet we don’t appreciate the opportunity that we have now. – This doesn’t even make sense.
  • Now I guess I see why we are called Generation Y, like, why are we so entitled because we don’t deserve to be and we were raised better. – This girl should climb back into her rock in Southern Mississippi and let the real people of the world figure these issues out.

Funniest comment:

This chick is hilarious. Please remove your head from your ass and actually look back at history before saying anything on behalf of a generation. First of all, the platform that I see your content on is Facebook, which was invented by one of those damned lazy millennials and that you also deem as universal bad in your rant. So already 0/2. I could sit here and disprove all of your assertions, but you probably don’t even know what an assertion is and frankly it appears as if you are just a brainwashed little lap dog that is looking for a pat on the head. Go be uneducated, complacent and refuse to make an actual fact based critical argument.

The dirty secret of millennials is that we know too much. We know that the game is currently rigged so hard against normal people that real actual change is needed. You are the equivalent of an naive British loyalist during the American Revolution. Me and the rest of the millennial generation will go ahead and prevent climate change, fix the federal government, develop interplanetary travel and invent great things without you.

My First Impressions of SnapChat

snapchat-focusI’m not sure if everyone understands how to use Snapchat but I most certainly don’t. There’s some weird way of adding friends by making your tips touch. Very personal if you ask me. Also it took me a few weeks before Evan showed me that you have to hold down the video button on the filter for it to take footage. I also just learned yesterday that after you take a picture you can swipe left or right to add location based text or images. With the learning curve behind me for the most part (I think), I’ll give you my thoughts on the usefulness of the app.

This was definitely not sent to me.

This was definitely not sent to me.

I know I’m late to the party and “the kids” have been snapping since 2011 but I get a kick out  of utilizing video that isn’t as formal as YouTube. Each video to your story lasts 6 seconds and this gives it an impersonal feel. I posted one video of myself hammered and didn’t have to worry much about the idiot I looked like because it would be erased in 24 hours anyway. I also am aware you can send private messages to friends by video which is a funny way to deliver a message. I’m sure pics like the ones to the right are also popular.

I pretty much have no idea what people post to their stories so for me it’s completely new. Jordan was saying people use it to post a snippet of a cool location they are at. I’m generally using it for any time I’m wasted and feel like wasting 6 seconds of someone’s time. With about 15 friends on my friend list I’m not exactly getting huge exposure but I’m enjoying the short time I’ve had it.

One question I had was I took a with the filter but then is the only way to get it to myself by taking a screen shot?
