Rebel Against the Sixers!

Last night marked the 4th straight loss for the 76ers.  There is no reason to care about the Sixers this year and that’s why the fans should stop going to the games and supporting the team.

nerlens-NoelWhat management is doing is egregious.  Yes I used egregious and I barely know what it means but I know it’s pretty bad.  Management has taken a great basketball city and pooped on it saying that, “we’re preparing for the future”.  This sounds good but as I far as I know, it’s going to be the distant future and management saying, “hey we did it and it’s only 2033” doesn’t cut it.

It’s a cockamamey plan to think that high draft picks result in good players.  Nerlens Noel is 7ft tall and didn’t get a rebound until 2:40 left in the 4th quarter last night (he had 6 steals and 5 asst’s which is the bright side)!  He may turn out to be a star but he could also be a Michael Olowokandi.  This isn’t a fool proof strategy that the Sixers are implementing and there is a fundamental reason why I have doubts, they aren’t building a team, they are getting talent.

Sam HinkieTeams win.  5 players lose.  Spurs are the perfect example and I understand not many teams are the Spurs.  They haven’t had a lottery pick since 1997 winning at least 50 games a season.  Using the Spurs is only a model of what works and there are other ways to do so.  Getting Lebron James on your team helps as well.  Currently the Sixers have no superstar, questionable raw talent, no team chemistry, and a period of too many losses to feel good about.

Joshua HarrisIf the fans don’t go to a single game, what would the Sixers do?  The Sixers averaged around 14,000 fans last year to home games, way more than I thought.    Total people multiplied by the average ticket price of $30, times 42 games is 17.6 million dollars not including revenue from food and apparel.  Joshua Harris, the Sixers owner, should have to foot a bill for 20 million dollars during this little experiment and see how happy he is at the end of the day.  The fans have had enough with this losing on the weak promise of wins in the future.  I don’t support losing and neither should you.

The Rock and TC Gets Rolled Half Marathon

ive-made-a-huge-mistake (1)2 years ago I said I’d never do the Philly Half Marathon again.  For whatever reason 3 weeks ago I changed my mind and signed up.  I was in a mad rush to get myself in shape and this was a huge mistake.

What I’m about to display in this post is a horrible way to run a race.  In the 3 weeks I was “training”, I never did a constant run for further than 8 miles.  I’ve stressed before that in order to run a race successfully, you have to be able to exceed the distance in practice.  I learned the hard way.

I woke up at 6am and ate a single egg and a Chocolate Chip Chewy bar.  I rocked a deuce and felt pretty good all things considered.  I walked to the race which is about a mile and half from my house.  As soon as I met up with Nikkii and CK4, I had to take another shit.  This was not good.  I waited 10 minutes in line and had the runs which I knew was a bad omen.  I did little warm up and waited in the corral for the race to start.

2014 Philadelphia Rock n Roll Half MarathonMy first mile was 5:55 but I immediately had a sock problem as it felt like it was sliding in the shoe and this usually leads to blisters.  My 3 mile time was 17:33 which I knew was fast but I felt pretty comfortable and figured I’d give myself some room to fall off of 6 minute mile’s.  I followed that with a 5:50, 6:02, 6:01.  That was mile 6 and almost half way through the race.  At this point I knew I was fading a bit but was still pretty comfortable in all areas.  I rattled off a 6:12, 6:19 for the next 2 miles and started to know I was in trouble.  The 8 mile mark is near the bridge in East Falls and it was like a Mack truck ran me over.  My next mile was 6:33 as I tried to keep it together.  Mile 10 was done in 6:39 and my ten mile time was 61:12.  I knew this time was respectable and even at the current pace I would finish with a respectable time in the low hour 20’s.  It was not to be.

marathon_runner-468x472Mile 11 was done in 6:45 as I remember thinking, “wow, I feel horrible and I’m still able to break 7.”  This thought proved troublesome.  My foot started to bother me and it felt like my legs were made out of lead.  I ran a 7:32 next mile and I was only 1.1 miles away from the end.  Unfortunately my body completely broke down and in 2 separate times I stopped to walk.  When I walked, my brain felt dizzy and I felt like I was going to collapse.  I ran the last 1.1 in 9:16, which is incredible, and my finish time was 1:24.46 (6:27 pace).  I was passed by about 100 people in the last 3 miles and was so happy to finish the race that I once again swore it off forever.

I’m not sure how much of a difference it would have made if I started slower but that’s not my style.  I’m not a long distance runner and from now on I’m capping myself at 10 mile races.  My feet were blood blistered up and I probably took about 6 shits today.  It’s not been fun and it cost me $130 bucks and entire weekend of doing nothing for almost 0 satisfaction.  Fuck running.

A Moral Dilemma. What Would You Do?

Billy Horschel

Billy Horschel

Billy Horschel won the Tour Championship on Sunday for a huge payday. He won $1.4 million for the tournament and another $10 million for winning the FedEx cup. He outplayed Rory McIlroy in the final round to win by 3 strokes. I won $200 dollars off of him winning this tournament by placing a 10 dollar bet on a 20/1 shot. I only partly made this pick.

At 11:17 on Thursday I asked the Shee, “Who do you like in golf?” He replied, “Horschel.” That was the end of our texts. I looked at the lines. Looked at Horschel’s last few tournaments seen below.

horscheltournaments

I decided to put 10 dollars on him and no one else because he was obviously hot. Now that I’m $200 dollars richer, does Adam deserve any piece of the pie? The only thing I can say is that there is probably a 0% chance I would have put any money on Billy Horschel without that one word answer. What’s fair?

Does Adam deserve a cut?

PYT/Shady Backlash

A local burger joint, PYT, received a $.20 tip from LeSean McCoy. The place is within walking distance from me so I’m pretty much an expert on this subject matter. Initially news was the below receipt was fake but I would strongly disagree after what you will read below.  (I heard through the grapevine that PYT adds 20% to the bill automatically which would change my perspective entirely on everything).

Shady’s Response:

Here is the owner’s response to the situation:

A MESSAGE FROM THE OWNER:

I would like to address the LeSean McCoy tipping situation and our role in it.

For starters, I take total and complete responsibility for sharing this receipt. It was not our server’s decision, it was mine. I am to blame.

I decided to take action after some serious thought. And while I’d like to apologize to Mr McCoy, I cannot in good conscience do so. I stand by my actions one hundred percent.

Mr McCoy and his three companions came into my place on Monday afternoon, and immediately the whole staff was excited. Mr McCoy is a skilled athlete and is one of our beloved Philadelphia Eagles. A true Philly legend and a sports hero. Understandably my staff was really pumped, especially on the heels of they terrific win the day before. (Go Eagles!).

Mr McCoy and his friend sat inside at a booth next to my management and next to me. They were given excellent service. Impeccable service. If anything, our server was a little nervous as was our food runner, because they are big, big fans.

He and his group, from the moment they sat down, were verbally abusive to our staff in the most insulting ways. The derogatory statements about women and their sheer contempt for the staff serving them wasn’t the end, however. After Mr McCoy and his group left I looked over and saw their server, my friend, with his head bowed down and with a very confused look on his face. I took the receipt out of his hand and I couldn’t believe that anyone could be so callous. Mr McCoy had left a .03% tip for our staff. Our staff that was beyond excited to see him walk into our burger joint and was excited to serve him. That’s twenty cents on a tab of over $60. Twenty cents that our server has to split with the food runner and the bartender. Two dimes from an insulting multimillionaire.

I bet Mr McCoy is usually an awesome dude. And everyone has their bad days. But I’m from Philly and have had the pleasure of meeting many of our bad ass sports heroes. Ron Jaworski I met as a kid and I love. Iverson I loved. Mike Schmidt! You name ’em. I love all of our athletes past and present. Hometown heroes who treat those below them with some respect. And maybe Mr McCoy was having a “bad day” after his big victory all that, but the reports of him receiving “bad service” is a complete slanderous lie, and my crew here is better than that and deserves better than that.

At the end of the day, I did what I felt my heart told me to do. And I don’t want anything from Mr McCoy, but…maybe an apology to his server who gave him excellent service would be cool.

Again, I am the owner and I take full responsibility for my actions. Eagles fans, I feel ya. Id be pissed too. But a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do and stick up for his friends.

Hate mail should be directed to tommy@pytburger.com. I will respond to you right after I catch up on this mornings hate mail.

Without getting into what the majority of idiots care about 1) LeSean being cheap 2) the owner being a dick for posting something when it should have been a private matter, the real question is:

IS BAD PUBLICITY GOOD PUBLICITY?

bad-publicityPosting this online by the owner is a sneaky move that blew out of proportion.  The owner serviced McCoy properly, got jipped, decided to make a fuss about it online, and now he has thousands of hate mail and publicity that was completely unexpected.  This is by far the one of the cheapest advertising campaigns in history.  I’m not even sure there is much negativity from PYT’s perspective.

  • The amount of people who won’t eat there because they are McCoy fans and hate for this to happen to him <5% of Philadelphian’s
  • The amount of people who can’t believe an owner would do something like this that won’t forget about it in a week <1% of Philly
  • The amount of people who had never heard of PYT before this incident ~thousands upon thousands of potential customers

Bottom line, by making Shady look like an ass, you exposed your business on a scale unthinkable at the time of posting this receipt. Shady should actually getting paid for this publicity.  I guarantee service will be top notch over the next couple days.  I may go by and take a picture just for research.

The best comment:

You guys should make a McCoy burger…  Two dime sized burgers served on a toasty roll.

TC getting jump kicked by AB in week 1

Week 1 did not go according to plan.  After a lucky 5-2 day betting weekend on college football which netted +80 dollars, the NFL was none too kind.  The final tally was 0-5 losing $170.  The Jets lost by half a point. The 4 team teaser lost by 1 point by 1 team (Eagles late TD burned it as the other 3 teams were money).  The o/u of the 49ers game got no where as the Niners didn’t score in the 2nd half.  I hastily took the Cowboys after the 1pms for an action induced bet that went South.  Not the start I was looking for.

My Fanduel  action was just as bad.   I entered 4 teams in 4 $25 dollar leagues and only 1 has a shot at cashing with it riding on Michael Floyd.  As long as he doesn’t get shut out I should get 2nd place for a net loss on the week of around $40.  Fantasy was equally bad as the Shee’s Orange Julius put a beating on me in the late night game.  Ck4 blew me away with Matt Ryan.  G-Rama turned me to mince meat when my entire team failed to show up.  I was only able to deliver one knock out from the team that I thought I had the worst draft with.

Losing-PokerThese are the types of weeks that you don’t read about.  However, it’s important to keep appropriate records and take responsibility for sucking.  I’m sure I’ll make a pick tonight but I’ll post it on Twitter as it gets closer.

Current season

College –   6-2   +117

NFL – 0-5   -170

Speed Training for the Philly Half

Philly Rock and RollI signed up for the Philly half marathon yesterday out of the blue.  I haven’t run more than 7 miles once in the past 4 months.  Either way I was boosted by my time trialed mile and decided I was in good enough shape to make a run at it.  I’m starting in good shape but not endurance running shape.  Here’s my plan over the next 19 days.

  • Try to eat healthier and eat more fruit.  Laura asked me when was the last time I had a fruit or vegetable and I answered a month.  I lied.  It could be 3 months.
  • I started yesterday running 8 miles all at one time.  Most of my runs are 2-3 miles at a fast pace, short break, then back at it for 2-3 more.  I did 6 at 7 minute pace and was pretty dead by the end.  I warmed down the last 2.
  • Knowing that 6 miles is my starting point of non-stop running, I’ll gradually increase my mileage over the next 20 days.  Today I’ll try to do 7 straight with a 2 mile warm down.
  • If you can’t complete a practice run at the race mileage, you most likely won’t do your best.  By the 20th rolls around, I want to have gotten up to 13 miles non stop.
  • With such a short time frame, I have to watch the alcohol intake and make sure I don’t miss many days training.  I know Sam doesn’t take many days off but I’ll schedule at least 5 during this time to make sure I don’t get injured from asking more than my body would feel comfortable with.

The Ace Heard Round the World

I haven’t posted in the past few days because I stopped worrying about work and the blog.  It was a needed break but it didn’t amount to very much in terms of content or even clearing my head.  However, yesterday something did happen that rarely does.

Ck4 Hole in OneOn the 6th hole on the red course at Limekiln, Ck4 hit the perfect shot.  The hole was playing around 110 yards and Evan led off with a wild shot to the right that hit a tree and bounced in the fairway.  Baker than hit a nice shot that didn’t hit the hill of the green or else it would have been a close shot.  Ck4 stepped up to the tee box and hit an arcing shot that was almost perfectly straight.  The ball hit the green, started rolling towards the hole, and we could tell it was close but it was uncertain how close.  Ck4 and Evan started running up to the green to see how close the shot was and that’s when the ball dropped in.  I was still near the tee box so as I saw them running I could see the ball on the hole.  It must have been centimeters on the lip of the hole for the ball to drop but it certainly did.

A 1 was carded and it’s always fun to be present for a hole in one.  Ck4 also dropped a 40 ft putt on 18 to card a 38 back nine which was also pretty darn good.  This was probably the high note of the weekend.  It should be added that we almost didn’t play golf because it rained from 3:30 to 4:30 and we were just waiting for it to clear.  It indeed did clear for the exact time it took us to play golf and before it got dark.  Quite a show.

Roxborough High School Alumni Mile

This is an actual picture of the Roxborough Track

This is an actual picture of the Roxborough Track

This post is about more than a mile.

Today I decided to test my physical limitations by time trialing a mile. I texted Sam to meet me at the Roxborough High track and he would stand as a witness. I hadn’t run on a track in about 2 years so I expected the unexpected.

During my 4 years in Manayunk I used to run the track once or twice a week. Living in Philly doesn’t allow the same privileges so I was fairly excited to see what kind of shape I was in. The reason I decided to test myself was because I hadn’t drank a lot this weekend and I’ve been playing ball regularly. I warmed up with 3/4 of a mile and Sam arrived at the meet time.

We made small talk and I told him I didn’t need his assistance and would time it myself. I started off hot running a 67 quarter. I knew it was too fast but the adrenaline was pumping to start. My half time was 2:20 so I had a nice 10 second cushion on a sub 5 pace. I was fading a bit on the third lap and ran a 77. I still had 8 seconds of space and finished with a 79 which was good for a 4:56 mid.  I was pleased.  It was fun running with Sam afterward while he was doing his work out.  I miss this track interaction.  Today gave me a chance to return to a place that I’ve spent a lot of time at and see how things change while still staying the same.

Kids on a trackSam’s almost 23 and I remember being his age and living in Manayunk, working out at the track, and getting drunk on weekends.  At 30, I can’t explain where the time goes. I’ve lived for 8 years longer than him but I remember those days like they were yesterday. Today was a wake up call that the clock never turns back as much as you may want it to. This is the most depressing thought there is if you think about it. I’m not going to get hung up on that though because it leads nowhere. It’s important to always be advancing in life even if you are running circles on a track.

5 Advanced Fantasy Football Moves

Fantasy-FootballAn inflated title but anytime you use the word advanced you garner attention.  2 simple words describe Fantasy Football’s popularity and this is a universal lesson for business 101: Gambling & Unpredictability. Nothing draws people in more than trying to guess the outcome of what is going to happen over the course of a season in order to win money and one up their buddies. It’s also a game where everyone can participate and luck plays a major factor. There is no better time of the year as drafts get started all over the country.

trich

Don’t be fooled, TRich sucks.

1. You Can Make a Bad Pick in Rd 1

There is no bigger draft disaster than having your first round pick be a dud.  Doug Martin, Trent Richardson, Arian Foster, Ray Rice, and CJ Spiller were let downs last year.  Tell me how many teams won their league with these players on them?  The days of drafting a RB in the first round have been compromised.  I’d much prefer Calvin Johnson, DeMaryius Thomas, or Jimmy Graham as my first round pick if I’m uncertain after the top 5 RB’s.  You know what you are getting.

2. Late Rounds Draft Picks are HUGE!

People seem to discount the later rounds but steals are a plenty.  Players like Knowshon Moreno, Alshon Jeffrey, and Josh Gordon were all in the later stages of last year’s draft.  Taking flyers on guys like Bishop Sankey, Kelvin Benjamin, Cordarrelle earlier than “experts” say can pay off with big returns.

Doug Martin

3. Get Guys Who Get the Ball

CJ Spiller is the perfect example of someone who is an easy RB1 if he gets the ball.  Instead he splits carries with Fred Jackson and leaves tons of yards on the field.  Doug Martin and DeMarco Murray fit this bill and perform with consistency if given the opportunity and avoid injury.  Kendall Wright and Julian Edleman were great examples of pass catching WR at the end of last year.  I’d rather have a guy who has 8 catches for 50 yards than 1 for 80.

Titus Young got arrested twice in the same day

4. Take a Chance on the Injured and Suspended

Many people don’t understand that fantasy isn’t about winning every game.  It’s about making the playoffs and letting your waiver wire prowess shine in the later weeks of the season.  Having guys like JG, Ray Rice, or Dwayne Bowe at the end of the season just because they are missing the first few games makes sense.  Percy Havin consistently falls in this category aside from this year.

5. Stream the Defense and Kicker

A league commissioner put up a vote to ditch the kicker and defense positions and I’m uncertain of the argument against the positions.  They score points and affect outcomes.  Kansas City was one of the top ranked defenses last year and probably went undrafted in 90% of leagues.  The unpredictability of this position is why you have to keep them.  2 years ago the Seahawks were playing the Cardinals with Josh Skelton at the helm.  It was the first week of the playoffs and I opened up a huge lead on Bud with A Pete and Montell Owens running wild.  I thought it was pretty much in the bag until Seattle went off for something like 40 points and it came down to Matthew Stafford unable to throw for 40 yards in the 4th quarter of MNF.  Best win of my fantasy career.  Manhandled Domination Station in the next round in case he forgot.  Play the match ups.

Easy Golf Money

Henrik is going off at 7-1 right now which means that my bet is a huge winner after round 1. Rory is obviously the huge favorite as he’s probably the best player and been red hot. I watched him hit one OB on 10 and get a double bogey, get a bogey on the next hole to put him even, and then birdie 5 of the next 7 holes like a douchebag. He’s the only one standing between me and 300 bones. Louie won the long drive if that means anything. He shot a 57 once.

At Mossel Bay, Oosthuizen has shot 59 and 57. “The 59 was better,” the club’s manager, Bertu Nel, said on Sunday. “Tougher conditions. Word got out that he was shooting a low score, and 50 or 60 members came out to see him finish. He had to make a putt from off the green for 59, and he did. He has what we call BMT—big match temperament.”
