Ck4 Birthday Bash

Sitting here on my second beer I’m surrounded by characters of the round table. It’s Ck4’s birthday and he’s whining that he “ain’t feeling so pretty this morning.” We went to Jack’s Place last night saw Kristen and the Noise. It was a pretty fun night that started with us playing drug dealer and then playing a dice game called 3 man. It was entertaining when Laura added the rule that the drinker had to compliment the roller. Without this rule the game would have been pretty average but this made it much more interesting. Anyway, everyone got pretty drunk before we went out and beers were only 2.50 at Jack’s Place which was awesome. Late night, Ck4, Jeff and I were down by the bay and the sky was really neat. I know that sounds really gay but we were star gazing for constellations which were illuminating nicely by the bay. Ck4’s the man today and we are about to head down to the beach.

! and too many letters

I just finished reading Chuck Klosterman’s book Eating the Dinosaur and he is a much more intelligent person than me. I know this as I sit here trying to think of it’s then me, than I, then I. He is able to explain ideas on why people do things instead of the way I do by just saying “I think they’re stupid.” I’m going to quote a paragraph from his book to give you an idea of what I mean:

“If you’ve spent any time trolling the blogosphere, you’ve probably noticed a peculiar literacy trend: the pervasive habit of writers inexplicably placing exclamation points at the end of otherwise unremarkable sentences. Sort of like this! This is done to suggest an ironic detachment from the writing of an expository sentence! It’s supposed to signify that the write is self aware! And this is idiotic. It’s the saddest kind of failure. F. Scott Fitzgerald believed inserting exclamation points was the literary equivalent of an author laughing at his own jokes, but that’s not the case in the modern age; now the exclamation point signifies creative confusion.”

I’m obviously not smart enough to put this in words as well as Klosterman but I agree completely. I think the majority of the population is just confused. I’ve written before how I don’t just throw exclamation points into my writing and I’m happy to see some validation to my thoughts previous to reading this book. The same thing applies to people who throw a ton of letters while texting into words to try to be cute. They aren’t stupid people they are just confused about being an individual because society has made them think that this form of writing is accepted. All their friends text this way so they are going to do it too. By trying to be different, they are just conforming.

So where am I getting with all this? I’m not really sure. It’s not like from now on anyone who texts me with words spelled like this “whhyyyyy”, I’m going to stereotype as a moron. It really has nothing to do with that. I’m think I’m just trying to make myself feel better about my own human existence. When I see Bud send texts and emails with perfect punctuation, I think it says something about his personality. He’s a no nonsense conformist who doesn’t like breaking the rules. It’s not entirely true but still I think it’s a good example for the post. I sometimes don’t like capitalizing my texts so that should give you an idea of the rule breaker I am. I also want to point out too that there is such a generation gap with me and “young adults” that I’m probably becoming an old fart. When I see facebook updates like Thx, I’ll c ya, my head spins. As every person getting older thinks, the younger generation is doooooomed.

One other thing I took out of the book was authenticity. People who lie aren’t people you want to be around. They will never be successful, and if they are, it’s usually done underhandedly. Honest people who tell the truth have a far greater chance at “making it.” It’s why I hope this blog will eventually catch on. I don’t fabricate story’s and I try to be as honest as I can with my posts. I give you my thoughts straight from my brain as I think them. This is my work. Rnningfool.com is me. I don’t steal ideas and this is something that even if I never achieve stardom, I know I can be proud of. If you’ve read this post this far you’ll know that you are reading my work and everything that comes along with it. I hope you, the reader, take something productive out of reading about my life because this is my reality.

Golfing w/ Bastardi

Ck4 and I played Avalon Golf Course on Wednesday morning as a twosome. Little did we know who we were about to be paired with, Joe Bastardi and his son. Going into the round I had no idea who Joe Bastardi was but Ck4 was absolutely giddy. He was the weatherman for AccuWeather for 30 years and apparently left and started out on his own. He was an absolutely fascinating guy who has quite a personality. He was talking to me in the beginning and saying things like “what do you think happens when the carbon dioxide levels in the northern hemisphere merge with the ridge and the trough and injection into cold fronts.” I just stared at him and said you aren’t speaking my language. He was very intelligent and a super nice guy. His 15 year old son shot in the 70’s to boot. Plus he’s a body builder so his muscles were as big as my head. The round was pretty entertaining and even though neither of us played particularly well, it was pretty fun.

Miss Avalon 2011

We basically put our foot down and said that we are going to catch a fish this year so we took out a charted boat. We woke up at 7:30 to catch a boat by 8 and arrived on time. There were about 20 of us on the boat and our group was Ck4, Jeff, Nicole, and me. After the first 15 minute we knew we were in for an experience. The water from the boat kept coming overboard and splashing us. Considering it was 65 degrees out and none of us had anything more than a T-Shirt, it got cold fast. We arrived at a spot after 20+ minutes and put our lines in. I caught a tiny fish within 5 minutes and that was just a tease. Jeff reeled in a monkey fish which had to be tossed back. Next is started raining and things started turning South. The best word to describe the condition was miserable. Everyone was complaining and it was really cold. After the last stop I reeled in another 3 inch behemoth and that was the end. Miss Avalon did nothing wrong but we certainly didn’t have the time of our lives. Ck4 is still fishless which is really sad considering the amount of effort we’ve put in to catch something.

StortzFest 2011

Appropriately titled by one Mark Weller, we are on vacation in Avalon for the week. We went to the WhiteBrier happy hours at 6 or so and it was absolutely packed. None of use were drunk and it made for an awkward time. I’ve never seen a more entertaining happy hour though. After that we had a monster game of Scattergories that included about 12 people. Basically we had two people to a team and I’d say the game was successful considering the amount of people. I had Ck4 on my team so I was the only team of 1. Also to mention, Jess Baker brought over some friends to so it wasn’t a complete sausage fest. After that we went to the Princeton which I thought was entertaining but not too many things of interest. Bake had one to many Hoegardens and was talking up a storm to this young broad. I woke up at 9:30 today feeling fine and went for a run which brings me to right now. It’s 12:26 and I’m watching Ck4 and Jeff cut up some fish and try fishing off the dock. Apparently this is the year we catch a fish. I’ll check in now and then with this blog but don’t expect my full effort. We’ll see.

My Life

I’ve been writing mostly posts about my thoughts on things and not my life. With a change of pace in mind, I’m going to give you a detail by detail description of my Tuesday, June 14th and you’ll see why I don’t write about my life that often.

I woke up at 6:45 and slept in till 7:08. I drove to work listening to music, mostly classic rock, and decided to get something to eat. I went to Johnny’s for a sausage, egg, and cheese and I have this one OCD trait about me that I hate when this PGW truck parks on the side. It’s this big truck and something trailing it that makes it take up the entire side parking and their parking lot is a nightmare because if you pull in forward you have to back out directly onto Delaware Ave. Anyway, I’m at the light about to make the turn and take a guess who pulls in directly in front of me, PGW truck. That tilted me and also the place was packed so I drove down the street to the gas station and bought a microwaveable breakfast sandwich and a Half and Half Nantucket Nectar for 6.50! After calming down I went to work. Work was bearable and I’m going to skip ahead to 4:30 when I’m leaving.

I drive back and decide to go for a run. I left at 5:45 into a slight drizzle. At 6 it started to rain harder and then by 6:15 it was a torrential downpour. I put up about 9 miles at 6:30-6:45 pace. Immediately after running I cut a blood blister from my foot because my socks were soaked and made it bad on my feet. I took a shower and decided I needed a new shower curtain and bathmat because they were getting gross (probably already gross). I go to target and buy a 5.99 curtain liner and a 9.99 bathmat. I also stopped at Boston Market and bought a half chicken with loaded mashed and stuffing as the sides. I came back home, put up the shower liner, placed the bathmat down and then cleaned the entire bathroom spotless. Shower, sink, toilet, it’s never been so clean. I watched some of the Phillies, then a thing on Tom Brady and the 6 qb’s beneath him and here we are. I’m going to read a book called “The Day the Dollar Crashes” for 15 minutes and then I’m going to call it a night. My biggest concern today is that I hope I didn’t give myself a stress fracture running. There you go ladies and gents, 6/14 wrapped up into one blog entry. Was your day any better?

Who wants to win?

I know someone is going to read this and think I’m lecturing him but that is just 100% incorrect. I’m writing this post because I’m sharing with all of you my general life philosophy from my experiences. Starting off this post, it’s better to win than lose. I think everyone will agree that no one wants to lose. Winning is more fun, it makes you feel superior, it boosts self esteem. There is a sense of accomplishment to winning. Everyone wants to be a winner. So why am I writing this post? 3 examples from this recent weekend.

  • I shot a 119 on a golf course this weekend. This is not winning. This is about as far from winning as I’ve ever been. For reasons that were probably health related, I couldn’t hit the ball. On hole 1 I plunked one 5 yards into the marsh. Same thing on hole 2. I was barely making contact and yes it was frustrating. Did I let it ruin my round because I wasn’t playing the norm? Did I start throwing clubs? Was I a sourpuss all day? No. I finished the round with my head as high as it could be held shooting a 119. What difference does it make what score I shot. To get respect from my peers? I’m not firing out 76’s like Bake. I’m going to be around a 90’s golfer for my life and I don’t see what that prizes await me in life. My point is that I’m not going to let a bad round ruin my mental state on the course or away from it. It just doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

  • On Saturday, Steve and I lost the first 4 or 5 games of beer pong in a row. This next statement is a complete fact for me personally, I can’t play beer pong sober and one person isn’t going to beat 2 very often. Some people start feeling an inferiority complex if they lose. Not me. When I play beer pong, I’m actually winning because I’m losing. My goal is to get drunk and I’m drinking all my beers. As the night wore on and Shee started to get too drunk because he can’t drink like grads from Pitt, we started winning. Try playing me in beer pong 20 games in a row and see who starts winning the drunker we get. My point is once again, people who win at beer pong don’t get the hottest chicks, or the most money, or really any prize except bragging rights. I don’t feel pathetic because I lose at beer pong and the outcome means very little to me. Do I try to win and try my best? Of course, but I don’t really care if I lose.

  • A final example came on Sunday during a tennis match between Me and the Shee vs Bake and CK4. It’s an odd matchup because Shee and Bake are far better than Chad and me. We lost badly the first set 6-1 mostly due to my poor play. However, the Shee never gave up hope and was encouraging the entire time. He didn’t let losing get him down and was in it for the fun and not the competition. He was helping me out on where to play and where to direct shots, all around good teammate. We ended up winning the next set 8-6 and then start dominating with a 6-2 beatdown followed by a 6-1 thrashing. With a good attitude and not caring about winning but rather working on team chemistry and strategy it was a complete reversal after the first set. Notice at no point do I say I’m not trying as hard as I can to win. It’s just if you lose, you lose, that’s it. You can’t let it get you down or frustrate you. I really believe this concept goes along way.

I do want to point out one final thing. The people who achieve the greatest ranks only care about winning. MJ would not have losing and he would devote his entire life to winning. The best people in the world probably all think like that. Being the best at what you do is a strong quality to have. I don’t want this post to come across as a Peter Gibbons mindset that I don’t care about anything. For the rest of the 99% of the population who won’t be the best at what they do, it’s about giving it your best and hopefully things work out. You can’t fret too much over results because most likely they aren’t deal breakers. This may be a losers mentality but it makes my mental state that much easier and I feel good all the time. I may not always perform my best but that won’t stop me from having fun trying.

    Beach People Problems

I know the 6 day hiatus between posts is probably killing some of my fans but I am back now for a week and then I get to spend another week down the shore. I spent the last week down in Ocean City, Maryland which I think is accurately described as Sea Isle on steroids. The whole atmosphere is just juiced up down there. Naturally the week we picked to go down was senior week and there were loads of young girls walking around, which is a great if you are a high school senior but I’m 27 now. I think most girls who are 17 just consider you a creep when you get to be 27. We were making jokes about things from the 90’s that would pass for a relevant ID check. One girl didn’t know what Seinfeld was which just blew my mind. Do you know who Gordon Bombay is was another funny.

I’m not really going to go into a day by day account of what I did because I just don’t feel like explaining what I did for 6 days of nothing. The title of this post is going to be my theme. I also want to point out if you know me you know I’m not racist and I’m just trying to be funny. If you get offended you can give me a dead arm next time you see me. Basically my week consisted of beach people problems. My red cup that contained my beer kept getting sand in it. My beer was pouring out with way too much foam on the beach. It was 100 degrees on the beach instead of 90. The water on the beach is a couple of degrees too cold. My sun burn is itchy. The bars are too far apart. You get the idea. The weather for the week was perfect and there wasn’t one day I didn’t get to the beach. I also prevented becoming a lobster this year because I used sun screen smartly.

I also came home a day early which seems ludicrous I know but I was finished after 5 days of partying. I went on a stretch on Thursday of 14 straight hours of drinking beers. I would guess I consumed about a case of beer by myself, probably more. I just couldn’t do it anymore. I’m a quitter. I was partied out and I left for my health. I’ve hardly ate anything today and I have to assume that’s my body working off the thousands of empty calories I put into it. But I survived without any incident with coastal highway or any injuries. Things went to plan and I have no complaints. I was even made a rookie of the fun police with my strong stand on why people should swim in front of the life guards and why you need to look both ways 100 times crossing coastal highway. I might go into some more detail later but I’m tired right now.

    What in the World?

There are two things that are happening in today’s world that are really throwing me off. #1 being the weather and natural disasters. They seem more prevalent then ever. Here’s a clip of a tornado owning a river which I thought was absolutely awesome. Let me mention this is MASSACHUSETTS! Why on Earth are they getting this?

With this ridiculous heat at the beginning of June, the record breaking snowfall the past few winters, the Earthquakes in Japan and Haiti and not to forget the subsequent tsunamis. This year is going to be a record for most deaths by tornado in the Midwest. People, things are out of whack. Whether it’s global warming or whatever, something is going on. I’m just so happy to live in Pennsylvania where things seem to just be moderate. There aren’t any real natural disaster to worry about except a little snow here and there. I can’t predict the future but it seems that we are headed for more records.

The other thing out of whack is our parents and facebook. I’m starting to notice the baby boomers are gravitating towards facebook. There is nothing wrong with this trend but everyone knows that once old people start finding things cool, they start to lose their cool. Sorry Mark Zuckerberg but this is reality. I know you are trying to take over the world with Facebook but what this baby boomer trend does is have the younger generation start looking out for more cool things. All you hear these days in the corporate world is Facebook this, Facebook that, but I’m predicting that Facebook is entering it’s maturing age. There is a business life cycle of something, growth, maturation, something and I’m about ready for Facebook to start to phase out.

    Finishing the day

I feel like I’ve been jam packing a lot into these 90 degree days. After work today I played Ck4 in tennis for about an hour and a half. I’m going to leave out the score to save him some face but losing to me in tennis is pretty blah. It was the 3rd time I’ve played this year and I really do see dramatic improvement with each outing. Starting from a complete noob each time I play gets to be embarrassing so it’s nice to feel like there is some progress being made with 3 playing attempts in under a week. It starts with just hitting the ball over the net to trying to hit it to a side of the court. I find the game to be average and the workout is not nearly as good as people say. Everyone, from soccer players to tennis players, always think that whatever they do is absolutely the best workout. After tennis today I went and ran 3 more miles because it wasn’t enough. Sure it’s a lot of stop and go but you get tons of resting and how much running are you really doing? Plus I’m in much better shape then Ck4 which gives me a huge edge as the games progress because I’m not really any better.

I also don’t ever get any opinions on whether people like my referencing to Blake Lively nude pics. I just think people are scared to voice that they actually look at them. Pornography is the primary purpose of the internet. Everything else is secondary. Now I know that people can’t view those pics at work but I’m trying to bring traffic to this site and I’m attempting they #1 way I know, smut. It didn’t work by the way as my traffic is still as normal as usual. I know some of you looked though. Pervert.

I’m glad the poll worked out the way it did. It’s so obvious to me that the phrase is “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.” Meaning, YES, it is to good to be true. By putting the isn’t on the end all you do is confuse the hell out of the sentence to the point that no one understands it. So it isn’t too good to be true? Then it’s true? It isn’t not true? You get the point and I’m glad my readers have some intelligence as Ck4 was the only voter for the isn’t.

I also went to the mall and bought a book on the failing dollar, a new pair of Nikes, and some Polo’s, shorts, and a bathing suit. I don’t really love shopping but I don’t mind spending money on goods that are I gain possession of unlike alcohol or gambling. After that I watched the movie The Kingdom with Jamie Foxx. It was made in 2007 and I found it to be a solid 2 star movie. Problem with watching it now is that I can guarantee I will never hear a reference to this movie for the rest of my life. Not a special movie or anything, just a decent 2 hour flick. If I didn’t watch it, nothing would be any different. I’d probably have two extra hours of time to blog. It was a pretty jam packed day though and I’m tired sitting here at 11:50. Going to sleep.
