Bowling for Dollars

Weens is Jordan Cohen

Weens is Jordan Cohen

Weens rolled a 278 last night.  That’s a pretty solid performance.   When you consider all the leagues that are rolled night after night it’s not groundbreaking, but it’s still impressive.  It should be noted that he took the perfect game into the 10th which is damn near the most anticipation that can be had.   It starts to get interesting around the 6th strike.  There were also 0 Jersey strikes in this feat.  Big Urn tried to save face in this game as I knew it was going to be a pic.

weens

The man, the myth, the legend…with a little dog.

To add to this story, we all threw in 10 bucks of which half goes to the person with the high game and half to the person with the high series.  In dramatic fashion, Weens ended up overtaking Mugsey for the high series by about 5 pins.  His final series was 1,000 pins after 5 games for an exact 200 average.  There you go Weens, an entire blog post dedicated to your feat.  One of the pluses of bowling with a blogger.  Oh yeah, Jkash was there too after we didn’t invite him about 5 times in  row. Adam bowled 3 quality games.  Evan and myself did nothing noteworthy.

Mountain Life At Lake Naomi

Lighting isn't my strong suit.

Lighting isn’t my strong suit.

This past weekend my family took a trip that was a little different than the norm. My mom planned / rented a house in the Pocono community called Lake Naomi. As most people head to the shore for MDW, we headed to the mountains. My mom and I drove up together in a quick 2 hour drive up the Northeast Extension. We got there around 4 and went for a walk to the clubhouse. This picture was taken by the “beach”.  I’m adding this sentence just so the picture below lines up appropriately.

When we got back I went for a run around Lake Naomi which was about 4-5 miles around the perimeter. Laura, Brookes, and my dad had all arrived when I returned and we ate some lasagna and meatballs for dinner. Jeff got in around 9 and we watched the basketball game before going to sleep. Wild night, I know.

The next morning we went out for breakfast at Jubilee which is a crowded restaurant spot.  JC’s stories had my mom cringing at breakfast.  Jeff and I made a tee time for 9:30 am. It was a little chilly but a perfect day otherwise. We got our guest badges which were needed for the course and played 9 holes.  Afterwards we went to Tobyhanna state park and walked around a bit. We then went to Brady’s Lake and almost got lost on a 2 hour hike. Many thoughts were pondered like the teapot god.

Family Pic

I should probably Photoshop myself and Sam in.

After getting home we went to eat at Robert Christians which looked like it never was updated from 1975. The 2 hour lengthy meal was entertaining and the food was delicious. JC made sure to tell us about his brilliant idea of a counter on articles of clothes that tells you how many times its been worn.  He even made sure to tell the patrons next to us.  Once again we got back at around 10, we were all pooped from the day.

On Sunday morning everyone woke up around 8 am and had some breakfast cooked by my mom. I went for a run around the lake before breakfast and it was quite enjoyable even though.  The morning was highlighted by Spurs game which won me 60, netted 40. We headed to the beach after that where I got unexpectantly sun burnt. Jeff and I played another 9 holes where Timber Trails got the better of us yet again. We had dinner at the club and headed back to the house to watch the basketball game which seems like I’m writing on repeat.

I colored a cat all by myself.

Jeff and I left on Monday morning around 8 and golfed with the Shee at Mainland. It was a beautiful day and I have to hope the cart girl reads this entry because she was a knockout. After the round I stopped over Matt and Jess Baker’s memorial day cookout for a few hours. We shot the shit and relaxed and concluded what was probably the first memorial day weekend where I can remember every detail.  JKash, Amber, and Jordan were also there which should immediately up readership at their mention.

how-lucky-i-am-to-have-something-that-makes-saying-goodbye-so-hard-64The hardest part about these vacations is that they end. We only get so many family vacations in our lifetime and the older you get, you know it’s one less. The working week picks up today and we are all thrown right back into the rat race. When you are young you don’t think about it this way because you always expect there to be another time. The reality is that the world doesn’t stop turning. I want to take this last sentence and say how grateful I am to have my family at this stage in my life who can still get together for a weekend like we did this week.  No worries, Sam.  Next time.

These Posts Are Going To Be Good

I apologize for the slow posting but I have about 4 posts in drafts right now that I’m not sitting down and doing.  I’ve decided that I’m going to try to do more research before posting and up the level of quality for my posts.  Usually it’s whatever pops in my head but since that only works so well, I know I need to do more.

mongolsThe biker gang violence in Texas for some reason fascinates me.  I bought Hunter S. Thompson’s book about Biker Gangs in the late 60’s and started reading it.  I  intend to finish that, which will take a few days, and then write a post on biker gangs in their current state with the latest investigation headlining it.  Anyone else think the bar being called Twin Peaks is awesome?

Another post in the pipeline is to have a recap on # of viewers of season finale’s.  This became a light bulb for me after reviewing the numbers of the finale of Mad Men when compared to others.  The point I’d focus on is why the quality of later seasons tend to dip (seeing it big time in GoT this season) and how that affects viewers.

75421eacfaab9a264ada311e69a0d9aeI also want to write a post on the decline of baseball as a whole and why youth (7-17) baseball participants has dropped from 8.8 million to 5.3 in 15 years.  There was an article in the WSJ that I read today that had a lot of good points but I think I could expand further for the decline and give reasons on how to swing it back.

As you can tell, these posts aren’t usually sit down for 30 minutes and write a post.  I actually have the time to write but I’ve just been occupying it with more mindless activities like watching Mercury Rising, the Iverson doc on Showtime, Montage of Heck on HBO, and also Playoff Bball.   So stick with the site.  I’ll spend some time tonight and then tomorrow morning before I’m away for the weekend to get some material up.

My Life in a Nutshell

No this is me in a nutshell!

I’ve had a pretty normal week but this post will use bullet format to describe a few of the highlights.

    • Bowling-trick-shotOn Wednesday night my first bowling league concluded.  Our team finished with a 13-27 record which was good for last place in the league.  I used JC’s 16lb ball for the very first time in this league and rolled a 237 my very first game.  Easy game.  My average started out at 190 after the first 3 games and finished at 150 after a league’s worth of games.  I sprinkled in a 247 as well which was good for high score of the entire league.  It won me $100 bucks.  It should be noted that in a handicapped league, scores like these are horrible because even though you win the game most of the time, you screw yourself for games after due to the raised average.  I am partly why our team finished last.
    • His was better than mine.

      His was better than mine.

Last night we played in the championship game in our rec bball league.  We were tied at halftime and lost by 20.  My top play was when Evan was backpedaling and the back of his head collided into my forehead.  Our team must have had 30 turnovers.  I also went 0-4 from the foul line.  It was humiliating.  I feel like a worse version of DeAndre Jordan.

    • Dillion Harper, a pornstar, favorited my tweet.  I’m not sure how she pronounces her name.  Is it Dill-E-on?  Or is it Dylan?   She’s hot.

Historically Low Traffic

Your site isn’t getting traffic because your content isn’t important or useful enough. It’s that simple. You’re not raising the bar, helping people, entertaining them, changing lives, and inspiring your readers to take some form of action. If you were, your audience would grow. Trust me.

blog-traffic-downI must have upset Google because my traffic is low.  After getting 800 people from a Reddit link, I’ve been punished and logged 131 people yesterday.  Considering I think the blog is at an all-time high, this is disturbing.  I pretty much always think the blog is at an all-time high by the way.

This post however isn’t going to be an all-time high post.  This is a “my brain isn’t working 100% and I’m not able to produce a great post so you’re going to get my shitty weekend report.”

On Saturday the Stortz clan met up with my mom for some brunch and to celebrate Mother’s day.  Laura liked a place called Kanella’s where I had some salmon infused eggs which were interesting.  We walked around Rittenhouse for a little after to check out the art and parted ways.  I then met up with Gourlay and crew at Frankfurt Hall for a few hours.  I made a mistake and didn’t eat after the brunch and after 3 tall beers at Frankfurt Hall I was toast.  My younger self would have continued getting plastered but I went home and passed out at 9pm.  Life is tough at 31.

hole7ravensclawShee, Jeff, Mike, and I played golf yesterday at Raven’s Claw.  My scorecard had me shooting a 91 and edging out Jeff and Adam by a stroke.  Jeff’s scorecard had something completely different.  It was a fun time though and the only part I’ll remember is chipping in from 20 yards to save a 9 on a par 5.

I didn’t exercise once over the last 3 days and feel like a piece of shit.  I should be back on track by tomorrow.

My Hoarding

I was cleaning my room last night and noticed the top of my dresser was filled with trinkets or objects that don’t ever get thrown out. Here was what they looked like.
Nostalgic Counter Top

  • Far left is a picture of Evan, Justin K, Celeste, and myself from December 5th, 2013.  Why do I still keep this?  I honestly have no idea where else to put it that’s not the trash can.  Apparently this photo op drew the fine line of being important enough to me not to throw out.
  • A pin the says “it’s my fucking birthday” was given to me almost 18 months ago.  Lauren McGrath made it (or bought it) and it was cool enough for me to not throw out.  I didn’t wear it once.
  • Above that is about 20 bucks worth of casino chips to Valley Forge, Sugar House, and a few AC casinos.  A voucher for $1.60 is also present.
  • There are 4 coins which hold some type of currency but they aren’t a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, so I have no idea what to do with them.  The far right is a $1 and the one to the left is $.50.
  • Below the coins is a gift card for $50 to a Steven Starr restaurant.  I just don’t use gift cards.  I used JKash’s $50 dollar Express gift card to by a 3 months subscription to Brazzers.
  • The far right are 2 wedding invitations that are upcoming.  I keep these so I don’t forget to go.

Same Problem

I’m having the same issue that Sam had when we upgraded to WordPress 4.2.1. The theme that we were using wasn’t compatible and the only way to get the posts to show is swapping the themes. Naturally I didn’t have a proper backup. I’m working on re-installing the old theme with what I’m hoping are proper updates. Stay tuned while I work out the bugs.

Igloo Desserts Heats Up

Ice cold in the Igloo

Ice cold in the Igloo

Igloo Desserts on Gray’s Ferry here in Philly gets my stamp of approval.  With 2,100 likes on Facebook at a 4.6 rating through 69 reviews, I suppose I’m not the only one who approves.

Now normally I wouldn’t go out of my way to express my support but the business model of this frozen yogurt establishment is rock solid.  My suspicion is that this shop is set up like thousands of other yogurt shops but dessert is a rarity for me so I’m out of touch.  My observations when I compare it to Dairy Queen which I’ve enjoyed in the past:

  • Self Serve machines in the back

Self Serve machines in the back

Yogurt is served out of self help machines instead of by an employee.  Brilliant.  More people can serve themselves at a time thus creating more revenue.

  • Only a few employees (maybe one), a cashier and a person who makes sure the machines produce, are needed.
  • The customer makes the dessert better than an employee would.   I could be stretching a bit here because I’m downplaying the ice cream “professional”  but I know the exact way I want to make my ice cream and I know it’ll be the way I like it.  Empower the consumer.
  • Price is done by weight.  No complaints as I got my fill of yogurt for under $5 bucks.
  • I was skeptical because my impression is that yogurt sucks.  However, I could hardly tell the difference and left feeling satisfied and fulfilled with the experience.
I consulted with this bro before I wrote this.

The website is professional and they keep up with social media.  I noticed also that with only 2 locations it’s not a chain with no human touch and customers support small business.  I can’t speak to how healthy it really is when I put 5 scoops of crushed up snickers bar on my dish but apparently it’s a push against “ice cream”.  This approach to serving dessert is a home run in my mind.  From someone who generally finds reasons he doesn’t like something before he does, I enjoyed it.

Head Spinning

Of course the best blog in the world has nothing more than text as its first impression.

Of course the best blog in the world has nothing more than text as its first impression.

Gourlay’s blog returns and my life is once again complete.

Not so much actually.  My life has been a whirlwind of activity that I can’t even keep hold of.  I have so many activities planned that I’m in need of a planner.  At no other time in my life have I felt the need of a daily planner but I think I’ve reached full adult.

picard_ashamedIn complete display of being an idiot, I double booked a weekend with two trips.  6 months ago I committed to an annual team relay from Gettysburg to DC (last year’s write up).   Without realizing it, I also told Adam and Evan that I’d go to Punta Cana on the same weekend.  The latter trip was booked on Friday and I felt sick to my stomach on Monday once I realized what I did.  What to do…

air-fees-color-webI knew I could back out of the AOR but it would have been the wrong choice as a responsible human being.  I ended up calling Expedia and getting a full refund on the hotel no problem but I had to incur $300 of fees to get vouchers to American Airline.  They wanted to charge $600 but it was a “courtesy” for me being an idiot.  How airlines make money 101.

I wish it ended there.  I have a bowling league on Wednesday and a basketball league on Thursday.  This Wednesday there is an AOR meeting which I have to choose between and then I have a trip to Baltimore for work related business that will have me missing basketball.

Not to mention that the new Stortz website launched today and it is accompanied with ordering issues and failing re-directs all over the place.   I’m thinking of walking in the Duplicator:

Calvin and Hobbes Duplicator

I’m sort of a fly by night kind of guy where I make plans and then just make it happen. Lately though this isn’t possible because I’m learning that different locations make regular events problematic. Without a doubt I’ve been traveling more lately and it does involve some lifestyle alterations. All is good though now that Goodies is back. Whew!

Evan Gattis Welcomes Me to Fantasy Baseball

I joined a fantasy baseball league having minimal fantasy baseball knowledge.  I used my resources and had Brookes and Bud draft my team for me because I would have done an awful job.  At the end of the day I had a team put together for week 1 which completed on Sunday.  I lost 206 – 188 but had one stinging position from the man below.

Gattis-ID

My catcher went 0-20 with 12 strike outs and 1 walk for a total of -11 points. To think that a person who didn’t swing at any pitch would have been better than Evan is painful. His pitiful performance aside, it only took a week to get a better understanding of what type of a team will win.

  • Relief pitchers who don’t get saves are shit.  Brookes is a big Ken Giles fan but 2.5 points once in a while isn’t going to cut it.
  • Hitters who don’t hit home runs are shit.  6 pts per dinger.  If I guy goes 2-20 and his two homers count for 12 whereas another guy goes 12-20 on all singles, they are scoring the same total.  Hypothetical obviously but it demonstrates the power of the HR.
  • Gotta Stream.  Evan told me a story of how someone in his league was pissed he was streaming pitchers.  LOL.  I’m hardly a good owner but I should have been hawking Sunday starters on Wednesday.  To lose a game by 18 and knowing I wasn’t even prepared with a stream is noob city.
  • A starting pitcher who is also a reliever!  Jackpot!
  • I find myself looking to pick up players who I’ve heard of and this usually leads to aging athletes.  I picked up A-Rod (against Brookes request but power is key) and Ubaldo Jimenez who I know was good in 2010 and that was about it.  It’s difficult for me to pick up rookies or young players because I’ve never heard of them and have no idea their potential.

Major League 2Does fantasy baseball make me like watching baseball more?  No, it doesn’t.  However, I like being competitive and this is another means of testing wits.  With past fantasy football success, I think I’ll be able to overcome the struggles of having no idea what I’m doing to climbing the ranks.  I feel like the Cleveland Indians in Major League.
