Jokes in a Public Setting

Everyone knows the internet never forgets and I deleted this comment, but still would like to share my thought process on it.

weens

1) I don’t think the sweater that Weens is wearing is ugly. I have one that’s almost identical.  My fashion sense is limited though.  I wore a Guinness sweat-shirt to a birthday party last week and Lauren McGrath said, “jesus, Tom, dress up a bit.” Coming from her I laughed.  I’m never best dressed though.

2) People on Facebook who see this comment have no idea that I don’t really care what Jordan’s sweater looks like. This makes me a jerk because I’m putting a sweater on blast in order to make a joke.

3) No one is going to laugh at this joke.  I personally found it funny for about a half a second but the Facebook crowd doesn’t have a sense of humor.  PC would tell me how much an A-hole I am and start creating groups like “Jordan’s awesome sweater.”  This is why the internet has become a sad place because my best course of action is to do nothing at all.

Is there anything wrong with comments like this?

diy-ugly-Christmas-sweater-ideas-14I’d say yes.  When I posted it, I knew it wasn’t right.  It’s like an instinct saying, “you shouldn’t be doing this.”  Especially because if Jordan wanted to internet fight, all he had to do was say how much of a pussy I am for passing out in the middle of the party and taking up an entire couch while there were 20 people in an apartment.  I’m certainly not one to be making fun of others.

Just a quick note, on Saturday I had my first few drinks at 3pm and didn’t eat a full dinner which is my own fault.  This lead to an early KO.  Not eating is 99% of the problem.  As I think back to the night, it’s like a few screen shots instead of a video.

The All Important Law of Human Conduct

I hope this post isn’t coming across as preachy but I find the info on point so I wanted to share.

How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie

winfriendsandinfluencepeopleThere is one all-important law of human conduct.  If we obey that law, we shall almost never get into trouble.  In fact, that law, if obeyed, will bring us countless friends an constant happiness.  But the very instant we break the law, we shall get into endless trouble.  The law is this: Always make the other person feel important.  John Dewey, as we have already noted, said that the desire to be important is the deepest urge in human nature; and William James said: “The deepest principal in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.”

You want the approval of those with whom you come in contact.  You want recognition of your true worth. You want a feeling that you are important in your little world.  You don’t want to listen to cheap, insincere flattery, but you do crave sincere appreciation.

The unvarnished truth is that almost all the people you meet feel themselves superior to you in some way, and a sure way to their hearts is to let them realize in some subtle way that you recognize their importance, and recognize it sincerely.

Reviews – “Win Friends”…was published in 1937

dalecarnegie“It changed my life” – Warren Buffet

“The most successful self-help book of all time… Carnegie has never seemed more relevant” – The Times

“It’s helped me immeasurably in life. I think everyone should read it” Jenny Colgan, Independent on Sunday

“a no-nonsense guide to being a better person…an easy-to-read, practical guide” Spirit and Destiny

Where I Am

Frank Underwood studied this book and manipulates it.

Frank Underwood studied this book and manipulates it.

I’m not even half finished the book but I learn a new thought with every chapter.  It’s not the first self help book I’ve read but it’s easy to read and contains powerful ideas.  There are times when you can sense the book’s thoughts working.  Let me illustrate (the book uses this frequently):

  • I had a conversation with the WB Mason driver who delivers our water.  Within 2 minutes of talking, he was telling me about his route and how he came from Marlton and how he knows the out skirts of the city and stays away from Center City.
  • The bartender at Fox and Hound gave Shee and I a bill for $42 dollars when it easily should have been $75.  It started when I told her it was impressive you could carry 6 steins at a time.
  • I talked with a contractor in California about his copper gutters.  I sent him a soldering iron that had a leak.  He was an engineer in the Navy and ended up writing an email on the make up of the tool and how he fixed it.  It was more impressive than what the manufacturer probably has.
  • The post I wrote about the stock option and all the fantasy football posts I write fit clearly in the italicized text above.  It’s a realization of this is why I write those posts.  It’s like, “trust me, you should listen to me.  I’M A PEOPLE PERSON.”

A Final Thought

Al Pacino playing Michael from the Godfather. Have you seriously not seen this?

Al Pacino playing Michael from the Godfather. Have you seriously not seen this?

I only wrote a snippet about the book and left out some of the most important aspects.  The basic principal is to engage the other person by talking about their interests.  This gets dicey.  There is a difference between honestly engaging and then engaging because you know how to engage.  I’ve walked the line a few times when I’m involved in a conversation and I know I’m taking it too far for the circumstance.  It’s a powerful tool to wield.  It’s also another reason why I hate sharing info in blogs because people know what I know as I know it.

Do You Karaoke?

Start: Be Drunk Enough For Karaoke

Saturday night was one of the few times I’ve ever been to a Karaoke that was small enough to not feel that weird about getting in front of a group to sing.  My life is sport and games, not song and dance.

This is exactly what it looked like.

This is exactly what it looked like.

On 19th and Chestnut there is a restaurant called Fuji Mountain that offers a private room with karaoke equipment. It was Sam L’s birthday and he rented out the room. There were probably about 25 people ready to sing and a vast database of songs that were accompanied by odd Asian music videos. Steve started the party off with a decent version of Gangsta’s Paradise and I applaud his selection. Sam made an attempt to follow with Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen and my learning of karaoke begun.

  • First observation is it’s imperative to sing songs that everyone knows.  Don’t Stop Me Now is an awesome song but aside from me and Sam’s brother, I don’t think people have heard of it.  This means that if you are a below average singer / performer, you are going to bomb.  People can’t help you out if they don’t know the song.
  • maxresdefault

“Don’t you want somebody to love?”

It’s ok to be bad.  People expect you to be bad.  However, it’s one thing to be bad for 2 minutes and a whole nother (how is that not a word?) to be bad for 5 minutes.  Song length is important.  Hearing someone drone on for 5 minutes to Bullet With Butterfly Wings (Sam and my duet) is not conducive to entertainment.

  • Finding group songs is key.  Yes, there are two mics but there are 30 people in a room.  When more than half the crowd knows the song, the performance will be turn out better even if the performers suck.  I learned this from songs like Party in the USA, Say it Ain’t So and Bohemian Rhapsody.
  • Everyone looks like Katy who does karaoke

Everyone looks like Katy who does karaoke

A personal observation was that songs are not that easy even if the words are in front of you.  In Da Club came on and it’s a song I probably haven’t heard in a decade but still knew the chorus.  I had the mic in front of me and couldn’t even start it.  Know your limits.

Having a party where anyone can come and settle up at the end is a horrible idea.  It doesn’t work because there will inevitably be people who leave midway through and won’t throw up any money.  This leaves the burden on the people who stay until the end.  A couple of suggestions.  BYOB.  Front money for an open bar.  Have a bartender.  The first option is the worst option.  Either way, still a fun night.  Happy Birthday, Sam.

Who Would Pay This?

This is the newest method of traffic enforcement that I’m aware of as it’s never happened to me before. Honestly, I didn’t even know this was legal. You know when you see a “speed enforcement” by aircraft and just start laughing. This is how I felt getting this while I was on a sale trip from a camera on the road.

Montgomery County, MD Speed Enforcement

14 mph over! Look at all the other cars in the picture? You think they all got speeding tickets too? What a fucking joke. I have no idea how I feel about paying it. What’s the worse that can happen? If I ever get stopped in Maryland I have a demerit on my record? What’s it matter? Fuck it. I’m a pussy peasant.

The Way Things Tend To Be

Long weekend complete.

Pretty successful all around as I don’t feel like death today and kept myself out of trouble.  No need to rehash every minute so I’ll post a few highlights.

    • I’ll win some DraftKings money this week which will be the 2nd or 3rd time of the year.  I put up 174 and still have Gary Barnidge to play.  If he scores 10, I estimate I’ll win 60 for the week which will make up minor headway on the 500 I’m down for the season.
    • 1335923360_brokeI was all in twice this weekend in my sports betting account which occurred due to poor BR management.  I bet 100 on the Eagles and then 150 on the Cowboys.  I luckily won a Bears bet to get my account to 100 and then the Sixers on Friday night to get it to 150.  I lost a 4 teams teaser on Sunday getting 3 of 4 correct but closed with the Seahawks and Broncos which has me back to 150 and down 150 for the weekend which I’m ecstatic at.  I’m sure I’ll find some more action tonight.
    • ChessSetI got back into chess which keeps me entertained.  I played to a 1075 and hope to get back 1100 and up to 1200 which is the highest I’ve ever been.  If anyone ever wants to play me, rnningfool on chess.com.
    • Sam tweeted about JC’s bullseye which had to be the highlight of the Thanksgiving.

  • My fantasy teams went 2-1 with one game pending against the Shee.  I’m a dog currently but I’d be hard pressed to say I have zero chance.  Shee’s fate will depend on the moves of Buck Allen and the arm of Josh McKown.  Should be fun.  Either way it appears I’ll be sending 3 teams to playoffs in 4 leagues which I can’t complain about.
  • CVCH4I2U8AEQMqWI had an unusual situation in a league where I changed my team name to “you’re not in first” and my logo to mock my opponent.  He took is personal and started an attack.  Not only did it make him care about his team which has little realistic chance of making the playoffs but it just got awkward because each one of my subsequent name changes and logo changes was misconstrued.  Either way it looks like I’ll win the game and I can move on from this and learn that some people take team name changes to heart which I didn’t expect.

New Theme

your-website-sucks-quit-making-excuses-and-fix-itThere will be complaints.  I myself am complaining.  Please understand that I’m not a website developer and I have to trial and error every goddamn setting known to man.  It’ll take some time until I get it right.

The site isn’t showing up properly on mobile.  The yellow background looks like puke.  The fonts are too small and the colors blend in so nothing can be seen.  There’s a stupid thumbtack on the feature image…

To be perfectly honest, I’ve only been working on it an hour and even though I crashed it once with a fucked up plugin, it’s been pretty quick.  I have way more flexiblity over text and size and I still need to decide if I like the continue reading aspect vs the posts all at once.  Any opinion?

I’ll work on correctly some of the aesthetics but this new theme is a step in the right direction.  It will take me some time to get it right though.  Hold tight.  It’ll take at least a few weeks and I’ll blog as usual through it.

My First Time Firing a Gun

m4a1It was Friday afternoon and Alex invited me to the shooting range.  I’ve never fired a weapon before and thought that it was an activity that I should have at least experienced once.

I had no idea what to expect.  I envisioned individual booths with bullet proof glass surrounding it so everyone was safe.  Not exactly.

shooting-rangeWhen I met Alex and his buddies I wouldn’t say I was nervous but I also wasn’t completely calm.  They ask if you’ve ever shot a weapon in which I sheepishly said I hadn’t.  The guide said that an instructor has to go over some instructions before you fire it.  He said to never put your finger on the trigger unless you are prepared to shoot.  Never point the gun in a direction you shouldn’t.  He also said if you do that, he fires back.  Guns make a situation real.

He went through the motions of loading the weapon and set it up for me.  When all was ready, he said to fire.  I aimed the laser sight on the board and pulled the trigger.  What a feeling.  Firing a weapon that has such lethal power is empowering.  You can’t truly understand the damage a bullet would do to you without firing it.

We took turns firing his assault rifle and hand gun and it’s not an activity that you are immediately good at.  As you can tell from my shooting…

bullets

Shooting gives an understanding of what it’s like to be in legitimate danger. I was a little bit nerved that anyone in the shooting range can turn a weapon and fire away. I know my friends aren’t going to do anything crazy but how do I know that older gentlemen 3 booths down isn’t some nut case. As much as I thought it was cool firing a weapon, I don’t see it becoming an activity I will do on the reg.

People Are Bad, MmmKay

I quickly shopped a bullet hole in his head.

I quickly shopped a bullet hole in his head.  He had no blood.

Abdelhamid Abaaoud was killed today which should make the world a bit safer.

In other news, I squeezed into a parking spot last night and was a foot away from the curb which was a lot.  The spot was so tight though that going back and forth 20 times wasn’t worth it at 11pm considering I only was going to be there for 8 hours.  It’s a one way street too so there should be no problem with spacing on the road.

When I went to my car this morning, there was a puddle of liquid under my car.  It did not rain last night.

carpicThese two events are pointing out horrible people in this world.  Obviously you are only reading this with one side of the story.  If you asked Abdelhamid who the horrible people are, I’m sure he wouldn’t say himself.  If you asked the shithead who let his animal pee next to / on my car, he’d say it was the idiot who made the park job.

original_459This is why I’m starting to dislike people.  I know I shouldn’t.  I know it’s better to go through this world happy and full of cheer.  However, when 128 INNOCENT people are getting killed, cheer is not what I feel.  My gut feeling is that 20% of the world are good people and the rest are shitheads.  They don’t know that they are shitheads but going through life with such anger towards other human beings is not the way to go.  Even man who let his dog pee on my car, what’s your problem?  I’m doing nothing that affects you whatsoever.  Let it be.  Let it be.

Back to Blogging Basics

This was a background I was working with.

This was a background I was working with.

So I’m pretty pissed off right now because I’ve spent the last few hours trying to upgrade to a new theme, only to break it, then revert back to my old theme losing information along the way. I purchased a new theme that looked great in the preview and then when I try to install it, it looks like a piece of shit. That being said, I’m 3 days off from blogging and unable to put up my Fargo recap as my mind is blown. I’ll try to get on track. In the meantime I did place a wager on Holly Holm and picked the Texans outright.

In Sam’s Abscence

rockymountainhighSam took a trip to Denver to ski high mountains and eat in high places.  I do not believe he will have the time to blog so I’ll have to hold down the fort while he’s gone.  You can see my Photoshop efforts are paying off.

I have no premise for this post.  It’s more of a sit here and write down a few ideas.  I wrote 3 posts yesterday which isn’t a realistic goal on a daily basis.  I also ran 29:02 on a treadmill for 5 miles.  This probably sounds egotistical but I’m not keeping a running log anymore so this helps me document what shape I’m in on what date.

I had dinner with my mom last night at the Iron Hill Brewery in Chestnut Hill.  She called the back dining area “stuffy”.  I thought to myself that I rarely hear the word stuffy.  Then I thought that was an accurate description.  This gave me the idea that you should always be trying to use the best word to describe a situation.  This would be displaying intelligence.  It’s why I never try to use the word thing when I write.  The word thing is a cop out for non thinking.

amsterdamI also booked a trip to Europe which will be fun.  I’m flying into Amsterdam on February 1st and staying for 9 days and flying out of Vienna, Austria.  There is a roofing show in Stuttgart on the 3rd and 4th but aside from that my mission becomes to get from Stuttgart to Austria in 5 days.  I’ll have some help along the way.
