Brand’s Inequality of Life

Russell-Brand-Revolution-BookUnlike Gourlay educating you on a pigeon, I’m going to attempt some heavier lifting explaining a few points from Russell Brand’s book Revolution.   I will hardly do justice to his full explanation but I will hopefully describe points I found thoughtful.  The book is a plea for people to start a revolution against the unfair principals of capitalism, the Gov’t, and corporations.

The 10th chapter used an example of how monkeys feel inequality.  Here is an experiment (it’s old but it was the first time I’ve seen it) with 2 monkeys that are told to perform a task (give the rock back).  As a reward, they are given food.  The first time Monkey1 performs the task and gets a cucumber while Monkey2 performs the same task and gets a grape.  No problem on the first try but when Monkey1 gets a cucumber for the second time…well, see for yourself.

The point is that monkeys prefer fairness the same way, most humans do.  A focal point of the book is finding ways to separate this huge distinction between the super rich and lower class.

One idea is to reduce security. Security is what separates the wealthy from the poor.  It’s what makes you accept that this is the way it is.  An excerpt:

“The definition of being rich means having more stuff than other people.  In order to have more stuff, you need to protect that stuff with surveillance systems, guards, police, court systems, and so forth.  All of those somber looking men in robes who call themselves judges are just sentinels, whose job it is to convince you that this very silly system in which we give Paris Hilton as much as she wants while others go hungry is good and natural and right.”

orwellfootballIf the powerful had to live a life without security, and common people were able to interact with them without interference, what do you think would happen?  I bet the powerful people would act completely differently because their actions would ultimately lead them to face to face with the people.

This leads into an idea that says to remove titles.  “One of the most remarkable things you learn when you work in a position of political influence is just how much titles separate the wealthy and the politicians from the citizens.  Ordinary people will use a title before addressing someone,  and that immediately makes that ordinary person a supplicant and the title one person of influence.”

He goes on to make the point that the Queen of England is merely a person.  She’s only a Queen because we say she’s the queen.  She’s not a magical being or an actual queen.  She’s only queen because the people are stupid enough to believe she’s the queen because the rich and powerful say she’s the queen.   It makes zero sense.

99percentneedsaraiseI’m a big believer in the notion that the rich have too much money.  The system is in place to protect these wealthy people so that they continue to get richer and the poor stay poor.  I have no idea what can be done about this but I have 0 doubt this is what is happening.  Ahh fuck it.  I’m going to watch another Shark Tank so I can be one of the rich people and segregate myself from the poor.

Being a Student of Shark Tank

shark-tankI’m rarely an early adopter of TV shows. I like the word to get out that the show is incredibly good and then I’ll binge watch to catch up. Rarely is a network show on my list but after hearing from numerous people that Shark Tank is a quality program, I’ve begun binge watching. There have been 93 episodes and I have probably watched about 50 from all seasons in the past 2 months which I think gives me a good perspective on what was happening in season 1 compared to season 5. These are my observations.

The Sharks

Robert+HerjavecRobert Herjavec – Net Worth $125 Million – Nice guy who enjoys the outdoors, running, cars, and is a family man.  He is the tech guy who grew his own 3 person business to a hundred million dollar company.  He tends to have morals and stays away from unethical deals.  He can get upset with Mark how he bullies the entrepreneurs into making deals.  He seems like a nice guy.

Lori GreinerLori Greiner  – Net Worth $50 Million –  “Queen of QVC” – Lori is known as the warm blooded shark and I applaud her for not getting bullied by Mark.   Her main selling point is that she can get the product on QVC which gets tired.  She has a good head on her shoulders and connects well with the women.  My one pet peeve is when she says “and for that reason, I’m out”.

Barbara-corcoranBarbara Corcoran – Net Worth $140 Million – Marketing & design expert.  She is the #1 shark in terms of making your product look presentable and the best to sell on a store shelf.   She made her money in real estate and gets along with most people.  Extremely likable and I enjoy her personality even though I believe she is the easiest to replace.

kevin-olearyKevin O’Leary – Net Worth $300 Million- Mr Wonderful is the best shark.  He is never on the entrepreneur’s side and only thinks about his own wallet.  Most of his deals involve some perpetuity where he collects forever on the sales of the deal.  He will always low ball and isn’t afraid to tell people when their idea is stupid.  Especially likes the wedding and funeral industries.  My favorite move by Kevin is when he tells the pitcher that “anyone can come in and do it”.  I picture him sitting on a yacht in the Mediterranean, sipping a $10,000 bottle of wine, and counting his money.  His catch phrase is either “stop the madness” and “it all leads back to Mr. Wonderful.”

daymondDaymond John – Net Worth $250 Million – Fashion and manufacturing expert who is highly regarded for his opinions on clothing.  Daymond says the least so it’s difficult to know what he is thinking but he has a keen sense of an idea and how to scale it.  He is one of the sharks who has a night life which is a nice change of pace compared to everyone else.

Kevin-HarringtonKevin Harrington – Net Worth $450 Million – Infomercial guru.  Replaced by Mark Cuban after season 1.  He wasn’t bad by any means but he also wasn’t good.  Mark was a significant upgrade.  Kevin was somewhat boring and was a duplicate of Lori’s business prowess.  2 sharks with the same skillset had to be altered and dropping Kevin was right because his television presence was not as significant as Mark.

cubanMark Cuban – Net Worth $2.7 Billion –  Has the biggest reputation, the biggest attitude, and the biggest bank account.   He is brash, decisive, pushy, and rarely backs down from his opinions.  The Mavs shtick gets old though because it’s all the presenters ever gear their pitches to.  The entrepreneurs also have a fascination with dealing with him where they will take worse deals just to partner with him.  When you are 10x richer than the other sharks, I can see why,  He’s perfect for the show but I view him more as a heel than a hero.

My Observations

  • shark-tank-changing-angel-investingThe success stories are irrelevant when everyone succeeds because of the notoriety of Shark Tank.  The show has turned into an investors dream when after the show your idea gets exposed to millions of people.  I would much prefer to see company’s failing or overcoming obstacles.
  • Mark hates stories.  Whenever Lori or Kevin start with a story he has already heard, he starts rolling his eyes.
  • Mark and Robert have a personal feud.  Mark doesn’t respect Robert and Robert is constantly seeking Mark’s approval.  This does not happen all the time but Robert is always looking over his shoulder at what Mark is doing or thinking.
  • kevinKevin’s perpetuity deals.  Funniest character on the show.  Constantly working deals that pay him forever without him doing anything but setting it up.  I find him to be extremely savvy although his people skills are negligible.  He knows what he knows and does it to perfection.
  • People who get on Shark Tank only for the exposure is becoming more frequent.  This was not the case in the beginning when the deals were mostly 50k for 25%, instead of multi million dollar deals.  I saw one where a guy was asking for 3% for 250k and had little need for the money and was strictly there for the exposure.  Cuban freaks out when he believes this is the case and rightfully so.
  • After the pitch when the person is thanking the Sharks for their opinions is one of the funniest parts of the show.  When someone thanks a shark for turning them down Mr Wonderful would say, “what are you thanking me for, I just told you the idea stunk?”
  • Dopey music making an idea look dumb is so unbecoming of NBC.  I get annoyed when the camera zooms in on a face or essentially leads the audience into thinking a certain way.
  • Taking offers has gotten absurd.  The sharks will bully the entrepreneurs and tell them they have to make a decision right away when it’s unfair because they haven’t even heard any other offers.  Then they childishly say they’re out when they wait.  The best line I’ve heard was, “With respect to everyone else, I’d like to hear the other offers.”
  • The amount of deals the sharks are taking is becoming unmanageable.  With 93 episodes and about 4 deals per episode, that’s roughly 150+ deals assuming half of the people walk.  How can 7 people manage 20 deals each?  Something is fishy and I wouldn’t be surprised if many deals fall through after being accepted on the show.

Best Reddit AMA Answers Part 2

This being the second AMA recall I’m doing, I’m learning that not every AMA is entertaining. I could have pulled every answer from Bryan Cranston’s AMA and it was gold. This post was like pulling teeth finding “the best” lines and I still don’t think they are that great. Either way, I spent the time to put it together so here we go for part two.

If you could give us all some wisdom, what would it be?

Open at your own speed, but open.
Dig what’s happening to you.
By “dig” I mean get into it. There are lessons for you there. And when it gets uncomfortable, that’s an important time to open and dig. There’s treasure in them thar hills.

Do you really like white Russians?

On a rare occasion, I will have one when I am feeling like having something particularly sweet, like drinking a dessert. I like my russians without too much milk, not too much Kahlua, just the right proportions.

Do you prefer smooth or crunchy peanut butter?

Well, that kind of depends on the mood I’m in, you know? Right now as we talk, I think if somebody offered me that, and I had some bread, or some celery, I could do a peanut butter sandwich crunchy or smooth, I think I would go with crunchy peanut butter with the celery. Right now I’m kind of in the mood for celery and some crunchy peanut butter. But next time I might go with the smooth, you know?

“Get off my plane.”

Hello Harrison! Who would win in a celebrity boxing match: Han Solo or Indiana Jones?

The promoter would win.

good-guy-keanu-reeves-55287What do you think about the picture of you sitting on a bench looking sad?
I think that a picture can tell a thousand words, and none of them can be right. Or true. I’m absolutely a very happy person.

Keanu i believe that i read somewhere that you have a genius iq level, so why did you go into acting? I mean based on your intelligence you could have done a lot of things. Why acting?
I’ve actually never had my IQ tested! And you know, in terms of acting, it was just something that caught me from such a young age. In a way I had no choice because it was the choice.

Main-Mike-Tyson-ClassicMy question is have you been able to defeat yourself in the game “Mike Tyson’s Punch Out?”
I have lost to Glass Joe before.

Hardest opponent you’ve faced inside and outside of the boxing ring?
Me, Mike Tyson.

What is your biggest achievement in life?
Stop drinking and using drugs.

Hey Champ,
As a former professional athlete that was suspended from boxing after your biting incident, what are your thoughts on Luis Suarez getting suspended from the World Cup for his habit of biting opponents? What drives highly competitive athletes to bite? Is it all instinct? Intimidation? Do you think he got what he should have, with regards to suspension (he’s done it THREE times)?
I think it is just the heat of the moment, really hot blooded and really competitive. The heat of the moment takes over us, we are really competitive and lose bad judgement in our thinking. Sometimes you can just become highly frustrated.

Mike could you explain the face tattoo for us?
It is the Maori symbol from the ancient native warriors.

Hey Iron Mike. I’m old enough to have seen your whole career. You were an amazing and punishing boxer. Who was the toughest opponent you ever faced?
Probably Holyfield and Razor Ruddock

Being Michael Richards

A few minutes ago was the first time I watched Jerry Seinfeld’s, “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.”  On the final episode of Season 1, shot on Sept 27th, 2012, Jerry sat down with Michael Richards, AKA Kramer from Seinfeld.

michaelrichardsoncicgcI’m happy I started with this episode because I have a feeling not every episode was this personal.   Michael Richards is known for two things 1) Being Kramer on Seinfeld 2) Freaking out at a comedy club and making racist remarks towards an audience member who interrupted him and said he wasn’t funny.  Here’s the clip in case you want to get the full idea behind this post.

richardsinwigoncicgcThat clip happened about 7 years prior to the taping of CiCGC and it’s obvious it still has a dramatic effect on Richard’s life. At the 6:22 mark, Richards says, “are we really going in there, are you serious, with this many people? We’re not normal people.” He proceeds to bring out a wig and sunglasses and goes into a disguise in public. Jerry just plays along. This was the first insight into Richard’s life and how he wants to stay as far away from the public eye. Jerry comments about the costume, “Oh Michael, free yourself.”

The heart of the episode strikes at 14:02 when Richards says:

“I think I worked selfishly, and not selflessly. It’s not about me, it’s about them (the audience). Now that’s a lesson I learned 7 years ago when I blew it in the comedy club. I lost my temper when someone interrupted my act and said some things that hurt me and I lashed out in anger. I should have been working selflessly.

I busted up after that event 7 years ago, it broke me down. It was a selfish response, I took it too personally and I should have said you’re absolutely right, I’m not funny. (To Jerry) …and thanks for sticking by me…it meant a lot to me but inside it still kicks me around…”

michaelrichardsinpublicIn the last few scenes Richards is with Seinfeld meeting fans and he looks uncomfortable. Like he’s had so many experiences from bitter fans in the past that he feels like an outcast. It’s really a sad thing. He made terrible mistake that lasted 2 minutes on stage and you can see his life hasn’t been the same for 7 years.

I wish I would have made this post 2 years ago when it first aired but sometimes it’s better late than never. I posted the apology below and that doesn’t turn out that well either in my opinion.

A Traffic Whore Loves an Ally Lyons Train Wreck

Internet TruthI’m at my best when I’m at my worst. The post I wrote yesterday about boobs and death contained links to the site which is hosting the Fappening as well as a horrid shot of Hope Solo (I apologize if you clicked that not knowing what to expect). Not surprisingly, I suppose, it boosted traffic to the point that I’ve already exceeded this months best day and it isn’t even 8pm yet. This goes to show that all anyone ever wants is what they aren’t supposed to have.

brandi-mug-shotHow did this blog generate hundreds of visitors years ago? I posted a Brandi Passante picture next to a similar girl from a mug shot. Was it her? I have no idea but I named the picture appropriately and got tons of traffic (and still do).

Where did today’s traffic to my home page come from?  One must presume that since this is a huge influx of traffic, it must have been something I posted recently and the only thing that anyone would care about is naked pictures of celebrities! This is primary purpose of the internet: to spread stories and pictures that you aren’t suppoed to see,

Ally Lyons Scandal

Ally Lyons

Ally Lyons

To continue with my inappropriate posting, I first saw this on Barstool but the story is about a girl in high school, taking a picture of her giving a blow job to some dude, in front of her friends, and posting it to Instagram. You can find the link through the Barstool link or on the subreddit trashy.  These are a few of her tweets from the aftermath.

Brilliant mind from Ally and you’d be in awe of the amount of support she is getting from people like the last tweet. Her Twitter is filled with pictures of weed and her doing hood rat things with her friends. Stories likes these are how you get traffic.  You whore yourself out to being a pervert and displaying egregious acts to “normal” people who want to think they are above it but the sad reality is the reverse.  Are my morals higher than that?

Mostly no but somehow yes.  There are so many fucked up acts going on around me in this world that me sitting behind my computer posting it on my blog is about a 1 on the scale of inappropriate behavior.  Blame Reddit.  Blame the internet.  Blame the stupid girl or better yet blame her parents!  This world wasn’t meant to share any and everything with everyone else.  We are imploding as a society and it’s unstoppable.  People think nuclear war will be the end of our planet but I’m blaming the camera phone!

cameraphone

PS: I do get the feeling the Feds will bust down my door and whisk me away so if they do, you know why. I also can’t speak for anyone who comes to my blog but I’m completely desensitized to these type of stories so maybe I’m out of bounds here but we’ll let the traffic be the judge.  I also found a picture of her parents.

Death and Boobs

As I mature, I realize there are only 2 important things in life: Death and Boobs

Death

death_everyoneThe ultimate consequence.  An incredible uncertainty.  Nothing.

After reading A Fault in Our Stars, I was struck by how death can strike some people faster than others.  A 15 year old diagnosed with cancer is lucky to live to 30.  Their life is barely even a life and there’s nothing they can do about it.  Eric the Actor from the Howard Stern show passed away at 39 on Saturday.  He was dealt a hand in life which left him 4ft tall and confined to a wheel chair.  He was fine on Friday and died on Saturday.  Who knows what’s next.

That’s why I’m laughing at myself for staying in this weekend, doing virtually nothing but reading and watching movies, to participate in a meaningless race.  What did I do today?  I went to work and then came home, ate dinner, and read / watched TV.  The fuck.  What the hell am I doing?  I’m making money to survive but my life is meaningless.  When you start to big picture life, life sucks.  It’s fine to act like it doesn’t and think everything is peaches and cream, and for 1% of the population it probably is, but what about everyone else?  This is a harsh reality.

Boobs

Davon-Magwood-FappeningThe fappening part 2 (this is a NSFW link) is hitting hard and these pictures of celebrities blow me away.  First of all, why is Hope Solo taking a naked selfie of her hairy snatch (That link will lead you there but you will not want to go)?  That was the most horrifying thing I’ve seen in a while but the rest of these pictures reveal one thing, female celebrities are celebrities because they have great boobs.  Lake Bell.  Jennifer Lawrence.  Kaley Cuoco.  Kate Upton.  Emily Ratajowski,  Kim Kardashian.  There is one trait they all have in common, a great rack.

It’s a real fucked up society for beautiful females.  Society basically says, “if you have huge tits, you’ll be treated better.”  This is a little unfair to the following people: girls who weren’t gifted boobs, girls who refuse to alter their body for plastic boobs, girls who want to make it on their own accord without the assistance of boobs.  Also taking pictures of yourself in the mirror is only an issue if you have nice breasts apparently.  I could probably take a picture of my penis but I think phone’s only have about 10x zoom so I doubt anyone would see it.

Led to this top rated comment from 4chan.

I wonder if she knows that everyone in the world wants to fuck her.

Shit.

She has to.

Like she wakes up in the morning, look in the mirror and goes, “Fuck.  Everybody in the world wants to fuck me.”  She eats her fucking waffles, just staring at the waffles thinking, “Fuck.  Everybody in world wants to fuck me.”  The waffle quietly stares back.  The waffle would fuck the shit out of her.

Then she exercises to keep that ass tight.  She knows everybody is watching her on that treadmill.  Staring at her ass.  Even the waffle is watching.

He’ll have his day.

I was shaking my head up and down while I was reading.  I bet she doesn’t exercise around normal people or use a treadmill.

PYT/Shady Backlash

A local burger joint, PYT, received a $.20 tip from LeSean McCoy. The place is within walking distance from me so I’m pretty much an expert on this subject matter. Initially news was the below receipt was fake but I would strongly disagree after what you will read below.  (I heard through the grapevine that PYT adds 20% to the bill automatically which would change my perspective entirely on everything).

leseantip

Shady’s Response:

Here is the owner’s response to the situation:

A MESSAGE FROM THE OWNER:

I would like to address the LeSean McCoy tipping situation and our role in it.

For starters, I take total and complete responsibility for sharing this receipt. It was not our server’s decision, it was mine. I am to blame.

I decided to take action after some serious thought. And while I’d like to apologize to Mr McCoy, I cannot in good conscience do so. I stand by my actions one hundred percent.

Mr McCoy and his three companions came into my place on Monday afternoon, and immediately the whole staff was excited. Mr McCoy is a skilled athlete and is one of our beloved Philadelphia Eagles. A true Philly legend and a sports hero. Understandably my staff was really pumped, especially on the heels of they terrific win the day before. (Go Eagles!).

Mr McCoy and his friend sat inside at a booth next to my management and next to me. They were given excellent service. Impeccable service. If anything, our server was a little nervous as was our food runner, because they are big, big fans.

He and his group, from the moment they sat down, were verbally abusive to our staff in the most insulting ways. The derogatory statements about women and their sheer contempt for the staff serving them wasn’t the end, however. After Mr McCoy and his group left I looked over and saw their server, my friend, with his head bowed down and with a very confused look on his face. I took the receipt out of his hand and I couldn’t believe that anyone could be so callous. Mr McCoy had left a .03% tip for our staff. Our staff that was beyond excited to see him walk into our burger joint and was excited to serve him. That’s twenty cents on a tab of over $60. Twenty cents that our server has to split with the food runner and the bartender. Two dimes from an insulting multimillionaire.

I bet Mr McCoy is usually an awesome dude. And everyone has their bad days. But I’m from Philly and have had the pleasure of meeting many of our bad ass sports heroes. Ron Jaworski I met as a kid and I love. Iverson I loved. Mike Schmidt! You name ’em. I love all of our athletes past and present. Hometown heroes who treat those below them with some respect. And maybe Mr McCoy was having a “bad day” after his big victory all that, but the reports of him receiving “bad service” is a complete slanderous lie, and my crew here is better than that and deserves better than that.

At the end of the day, I did what I felt my heart told me to do. And I don’t want anything from Mr McCoy, but…maybe an apology to his server who gave him excellent service would be cool.

Again, I am the owner and I take full responsibility for my actions. Eagles fans, I feel ya. Id be pissed too. But a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do and stick up for his friends.

Hate mail should be directed to tommy@pytburger.com. I will respond to you right after I catch up on this mornings hate mail.

Without getting into what the majority of idiots care about 1) LeSean being cheap 2) the owner being a dick for posting something when it should have been a private matter, the real question is:

IS BAD PUBLICITY GOOD PUBLICITY?

bad-publicityPosting this online by the owner is a sneaky move that blew out of proportion.  The owner serviced McCoy properly, got jipped, decided to make a fuss about it online, and now he has thousands of hate mail and publicity that was completely unexpected.  This is by far the one of the cheapest advertising campaigns in history.  I’m not even sure there is much negativity from PYT’s perspective.

  • The amount of people who won’t eat there because they are McCoy fans and hate for this to happen to him <5% of Philadelphian’s
  • The amount of people who can’t believe an owner would do something like this that won’t forget about it in a week <1% of Philly
  • The amount of people who had never heard of PYT before this incident ~thousands upon thousands of potential customers

Bottom line, by making Shady look like an ass, you exposed your business on a scale unthinkable at the time of posting this receipt. Shady should actually getting paid for this publicity.  I guarantee service will be top notch over the next couple days.  I may go by and take a picture just for research.

The best comment:

You guys should make a McCoy burger…  Two dime sized burgers served on a toasty roll.

Being David Bowie

Ziggy-Stardust-the-70s

Ziggy Stardust

David Bowie is a different genius.  He is a brilliant character who is calculated in his performance.  He wanted to be a catalyst for music and was thoroughly artificial in doing so. I watched his documentary on Showtime called David Bowie: 5 Years and it brings insight into an “Advanced Genius” by highlighting his 5 best years.

What I liked about Bowie is that he was himself by not being himself.  He created these personas and it’s hard to know if they were the real David Bowie or an impostor.  The guy to the right is not David Bowie, it’s Ziggy Stardust.  Bowie wrote a song about a rock and roll singer who becomes famous and this character is named Ziggy Stardust.  Amazingly, this character became popular and did Ziggy become famous or David Bowie?

This lead me to start questioning the cliched phrase, “be yourself”.  Was Bowie himself?  Sort of.  His characters weren’t him but he was artificially creating them.  Drugs also played a major role in who David Bowie was.  Young Bowie did a ton of drugs and made dozens of hits.  Old Bowie got off the drugs and was just as good if not better song writer.  Are you yourself on drugs?

[dropcap background=”yes” color=”#333333″]The minute you know you’re on safe ground, you’re dead[/dropcap]

David Bowie

Present Day Bowie

Bowie also collaborated with other artists to bring out music that was unique to his time period.  Critics say he stole music from others such as Lou Reed and Iggy Pop but this is untrue.  Improving what others are doing is commonplace in the industry.   By altering what other people are having success doing and creating your own version is smart.  Bowie also embraced technology and created hits throughout every decade.

The greatest weapon in Bowie’s arsenal was that he knew what he wanted.  He had an immense talent of knowing exactly what he wanted to produce and then did so.  It was his vision that he would create and this is why that anyway you look at it, he was still himself even when he wasn’t.  Everything was Bowie’s creation.  Having your own unique vision is what separates the great from the best.  How good is your vision?

Robin Williams Is Dead

Twitter blows up when famous people die. It’s actually a fascinating way of seeing how popular the source is reporting the info. Take a look at the favorites and re-tweets from these big named twitter accounts. I can’t explain it but I feel such a disconnect from these people dying that it doesn’t come off as incredibly important news to me.
