bball and effort

So we played pretty well against the number 1 seeded team. We actually had a lead at halftime by about 4 and then ended up losing by 10 or so. We shut Chet down but I think we had at least 3 guys foul out and they just were better than us when it came down to talent. We really need a big guy for any other league we play in. If you are 6-4 or taller or know someone who is who would want to play, please let me know. There were no good stories from the game either so that’s all I got.

I wrote in my last post that I put forth the most effort in my life towards high school track. I would like to say that even towards this I didn’t give 100%. There is something in my mind which separates me from the upper echelon (if you thought brains and ability, haha). I know I’ll never be the very best at anything. There is too many people out there who just work harder at something and will just outclass you. But when I think back over my life, I can’t think of anything that I actually cared enough about to give it my all. Sad I know. I’ll give a couple of examples. I could be way better at bball. Give me an hour a day in gym by myself and I guarantee you I would improve offensively. Problem, I don’t care enough to put forth the effort. Who cares if you win rec leagues, it means nothing in life in the grand scheme of things, so why try? I could take some classes on option trading and learn how to write covered calls and naked puts. If I wanted to spend all my time learning and watching the stock market, I guarantee I could get a better return on my money than I am currently. It would take a lot of hard work and dedication to understanding the market but it’s definitely and option (pun for people who are slow). This skill would actually come in handy because it could make you a lot of money. Lots of effort to be successful but has the potential to pay off.

So what stops me from being the best I can? Why is it not in my make up to go after these worthwhile ideas that would improve myself and my life? I guess it’s because I’m content and complacent. I’m happy getting by with the amount of effort I’m putting in and I’m pleased with my mentality. Once you dedicate yourself to working hard you become stressed and lose the ability to see the big picture sometimes. I’m considering actually going balls to wall to understand the stock market and try to make a dime or two. This isn’t a bad time to learn with the market being down from the highs. I really believe that I have the ability to conquer most challenges in life if I’m dedicated to doing it, I just don’t.

I admire people who spend all those extra years in school learning some specialty trade that can make them more money in the future. Let me just break this down though to understand why. So you go to school for 3 extra years and it costs say 100,000. If you had worked those 3 years, with a bachelors and made 40,000k a year, you would NETTED made 75k, money in your pocket. Now you get out grad school and make 70,000, net 45. Out of that 45 you have to probably live off of 25 and you get to put 20 towards your debt a year. It takes you 5 years in the prime time of your life to pay back your debt. So now your 30 years old making 70k and you’ve paid off your college debt. The guy who didn’t go to grad school and made 40 for the last 8 years (while you were in grad school and the 5 it took you to pay back the loan) pocketed 200k NET (obviously he was spending money living but you get the point). And every situation is different. Some people can’t make 70k out of grad school and people off bachelors degrees usually can make more than 40. Just food for thought.

On a side note I watched Righteous Kill and Donnie Brasco the last two days and I thought both were above average movies. Righteous Kill was entertaining throughout and I thought the dialogue probably deserves more credit that it got. Donnie Brasco was based on a true story and I thought Johnny Depp playing Donnie fantastically. All around good movie and I’d recommend both. I also watched beer league with Artie Lange and it was horrendous, never watch this movie.

I miss

I think back to those carefree days of youth and understand that as you get older and move through different passages of life, you never get the opportunity to relive those times again. It’s sad in one sense but there really is nothing you can do about it so looking forward is a must. The strange thing is that when you’re little, you never really understand how good you had it until you grow up. No bills, no stress, no responsibilities, just the freedom to live life. As you get older you look back and wonder if you would have changed anything. I suppose if I got another opportunity I would probably just do it all the same again because I did what came natural. I write this post about all of the little things that made me happy in the past that I don’t find the same pleasure in anymore.

I miss a brown bag for lunch. In elementary school, my mom used to make me a plain peanut butter sandwich every day because I hated jelly. Once I got sick of that I’d swap to ham and cheese, every day. After that Tuna or turkey. She’d pack me a sssips lemon iced tea, everyday. One bag of cookies and a one pack of Doritos. I think back to it and the routine of it is so amazing that I just love my mom for doing this for me for all those years. She would even include 6 packs of smarties that I would distribute to each one of my friends. This became a staple of lunchtime and I was the decider of who would receive a Smartie. It’s actually a bit dictator like now that I look back at it but I’ll never forget doing it.

I miss not paying attention. Classes were such a joke growing up that the ability to do nothing throughout school and still receive high marks with little effort is so incredible that I wish I could relive that. Dave Krieg and I used to sit in Honers History (what a joke) and literally draw full page mazes with tiny, tiny lines. These would literally take hours to do and nearly impossible to finish. I remember doing a video with Lubowitz that was for an English class that we shot of him speeding down the road, throwing a beer can out the window and then running over my brother with the message of not drinking and driving. The project had to do with the Joy Luck Club and this was the part we did. Where else could you get away with such nonsense (she did talk to us after class.) I remember plagiarizing a paper from Encarta and having the teacher write “see me” on the paper. I was so terrified that I never saw her and ended up passing the class before she ever said anything.

I miss standing at the bus stop. Getting Bud to believe we had an invisible dog. Picking a color of a car and then tallying them up as they drove by. Having the older kids in middle school set the 6th graders up to fight each other. I will never forget when Ed Mcgrath and I were running away from this kid Colby and what was, as my memory serves me, 50 yards away (probably more like 10) he hurls this empty can of whip cream and it hits Ed right in the head while he was running away with his back to it. Had to been one of the greatest displays of timing ever.

I miss the outfits I used to wear. I used to wear plaid shorts day after day because I thought they owned. I had this one shirt with all black and hot pink lines that was my favorite. I didn’t start wearing jeans till 7th grade. Didn’t start wearing collared shirts till 10th. My fashion has come a long way.

I miss the games we used to learn throughout our youth and just be entertained for hours by the stupidest things. I remember kickball at recess, smear the queer, football in Pishy’s backyard that was unfair because his arms were as wide as the end zone. I remember playing Magic the Gathering and Redzone and any other stupid card game that game out. Challenges at the Willow Grove Mall with Evan where we’d play the Asian clans that would gather around and take losses like samurai warriors. When we were really little, Bud and I used to play run the bases and football with his dad as the steady Q and Bud would always complain that his dad was favoring me by throwing bad passes but in reality he just had lead feet.

I used to get excited about going to Dorney Park and Wild Water Kingdom. The car rides there would seem like forever. Another long car ride was Rice’s Flea market on Tuesday’s so we could buy some fireworks because we were pyro maniacs. Baseball card shows at the expo center were always something that I’d look forward too. As much as I don’t like to admit it, I wish I took track a little more seriously. It was such a big part of my life throughout all of high school. I never gave it my all but who was I kidding, it was never going to get me anywhere. It was probably close to the most effort I’ve ever put towards anything in my life.

I think back to all these things that used to make me happy and wonder what it takes to find that joy in such simple things. Now I feel like I’ve turned to the dark side. Work all week and then get off on things like drinking and gambling and chasing random girls. Everything was so pure and simple in youth. A reference to the late JD Salinger and the Catcher in the Rye would be appropriate here (if you’ve never read it I suggest you do just to say that you have and thought about what’s inside it.)

It’s funny too because this is what I can recollect when I’m 26. What will I remember when I’m 36? All these things that I enjoy doing now are just so different then what I used to enjoy. It’s much harder to be happy the older you get because of all the different responsibilities and pressures. I think the hardest thing for me is that even if I could choose to be happy, I still wouldn’t know what I’d want to do. Probably move to a tropical location on a golf course, marry a hot wife and raise some kids. The real ability to be happy comes from friendships and relationships you have with other people on this planet. Sharing experiences and relying on other people is what it’s all about.

Sorry for another one of these deep personal posts but I really had a fun time writing this because it had me thinking back to all these things in my past that made me happy. It also makes me appreciate my mom and my dad so much for taking care of me growing up. I just sit here as a 26 year old and know that they aren’t going to be around forever and that sometimes I take that for granted. I should tell my mom I love her more often and tell her how much I treasure the time we can spend together. Sometimes we all just get caught up in this daily routine of life that we miss out on the important things.

Post 3

I just wrote 2 posts and I couldn’t publish either of them because they are too boring and depressing. I’m probably going to have to take a break for a little while because I don’t have anything in the pipeline. If I can’t provide material that I deem as up to my standards, I’m not going to publish trash. It’s not even writer’s block either because I don’t even consider myself a writer. The only things I can think about now are work and why is it so damn cold and both put me in a bad mood. It’s not even that I dislike work it’s just the thought of doing it week after week has me spinning. I just sat here for over a half hour and this is the best I could come up with and even that has me down. Tomorrow’s entry has to be better.

Borgata

I really don’t like making these depressed posts so even though I don’t think it’s that great of a story I’ll give some details of my weekend. Start out buying a case of Flying Dog at the beer store because they had a sales man giving out free samples and I know what it’s like to sell something so I gave him the business, plus I got a glass and an opener. So I drink a handful and then wagon and I go to Kildare’s to meet up with some girl. She has a friend and I get the one with the pin. So I play nice for a while being a good wing man and then wander off to Mad River. My new favorite bartender specifically pointed me out to do an mind eraser which was cool but turns out she’s engaged so it’s just another dumb girl with a boyfriend. I still like her though. I was working some game with a couple decent girls but no conversion.

Saturday we went to AC. Left at 12 or so and I speeded down to the Borgata. Evan and I played some PaiGow to start where I won 50 or so, I think he was up 7 hundo. Then I went to play some 1-2. I already had a goose and a couple of beers so combined with the previous nights intake I was already pretty good and buzzed. So I sit down and instantly start blabbing how I’m here to create action and that I’m pretty much the best player they’ll ever see. Yada yada I play like a 10/10 (which is tight for those unfamiliar with vpip/pf) I don’t really see too many hands and basically just continued to drink. I called the clock on one guy who flipped at me but he had plenty of time. There was an Indian guy next to me who I was relentlessly needling by calling him awful and telling him how big a fish he was. I didn’t use my casting motion but I would have if he was across the table. Then some guy got a big head against me because he was in a hand and just shoved his chips in haphazardly without saying raise or anything, so I told him to learn how to bet/raise properly. So he wanted to try to take my money. Then Allen Hopkins, some world class 9 ball player, sits down and we start at it. He was pretty bad and ended up busting. I ended up cashing out down 50 or so without really doing too much. I 3 bet kk once and an A flopped which killed my action and I didn’t hit any sets. I had k8 on a k85 flop and the guy turned a 5 and he took about a c note on me when I didn’t see that coming. So I took my stack to blackjack, lost some chips and then put some on a roulette spin which lost and I ended the day down 200. I don’t like losing money so this put me in a sour mood which carried over to this morning but I’m finally feeling a bit better. There’s a blog post that doesn’t make me sound like an emotional mess.

Monday

I really don’t want to re-hash my weekend as nothing too exciting occurred. Weekends like this past one give me a feeling of waste. I just keep doing the same thing over and over again that I’m starting to bore myself. My ebb and flow with people has been off lately. I used to think it was everyone else but now I’m beginning to think it’s me. Some friends tried to get in touch with me on Saturday and I just completely disregarded it. Alcohol is the main contributor to may bad state and lack of effort. I was too wasted all of Saturday and it lead to no good. I probably won’t be doing too much in the sense of partying this week or weekend because I’m going to New Orleans on Sunday. I really don’t want to feel like I do now down there. Same theme to the blog as usual. It’s like I wrote in the sentence above, I’m starting to bore myself.

Fryday

So I’ve gotten decent feedback on the videos and I’ll post them from time to time intertwining them with the text. I made it to work today at 9:30 which is better than not going at all. I was up till 2:30 or so last night so I’m working off not so much sleep but I’ll make due. I put 6 chicken wings in the oven last night and passed out while the oven was on. Wagon alerted me of it this morning. I did this before in Summit where I burnt a Cordon Blue to a crisp. I’m not sure if that’s a fire hazard or not but I would sure feel awful if I burnt the house down, but Tommy want wingy (Tommy Boy for the slow).

I forgot to add some commentary about last night because I just remembered it now. Wagon was in rare form. I wasn’t as drunk as him to start and he would literally just approach a girl and pretty much didn’t take no for an answer if she didn’t want to dance. He told me he liked this one girl in red and I was like ok I’ll talk to her. So at one point in the night I went up to the girl and her friend and I said that my friend likes you. She kind of blew me off so I started talking to her friend. So I asked her her name and it was so loud that she said it once, twice, three times and I still couldn’t hear it so I just walked away. Also one of my friends tells me that all girls are whores and I found one last night. I think Chad might have been dancing with her at one point but it’s like the situation and a robbery was in progress. Literally the girl was all about me thrusting my crotch into her backside. I was hammered at that point so I was fine with it. Seriously these Thursday nights are not to be missed. The place was packed like a weekend. My goal is to get a date with the bartender who did a mind eraser with me. Hopefully I’ll see her tonight.

Anyhow, I liked the comment about my grammar. I do try to do the best I can with spelling and punctuations but in reality I have no idea how to do it properly. If I think the sentence needs I comma I just throw it in there. I get the feeling that people actually like reading viewing this material which somewhat shocks me. In no way do I think of myself as popular but it’s nice to know people like viewing what I’m doing.

Remember the days when you could dial without area codes. 7 digits, that was it. Bud, I was trying to think of my number at 1715 Fort Washington but couldn’t, if you could comment on what it was I’d appreciate it.

And seriously if you understand the thought that went into that title, you have to give me some props. I have an idea to bring the video camera home to get some rare footage of hammer time which I’m sure everyone will find amusing. I’m a little bit worried because when I get in that form I’m pretty much capable of anything which scares me a bit. I also want to point out that my blogroll has one person and it’s pretty much a derivative of me. As Jeff from Grandma’s Boy would “Your Shit’s Weak.”

2/11/10

These would be more pertinent if they were done in the beginning of the day. Honestly, I watch these and laugh at myself how much of a goof I am on video.
