The Game of Life

This post is going to be long winded so make sure you’ve got a nice 10 minutes to spare.

Today was one of those reflective days where the unexpected occurs and can potentially make life altering results. I was having horrendous stomach pains today and I couldn’t come up with any explanation. I asked Sam if it was the chicken cutlet we had at bowling last night and he said he felt fine. I had my usual breakfast and there was nothing in my stomach that should have been causing any pain.

I rarely get sick. I didn’t miss a day of school from Elementary school to Senior year of high school. I went to class with a huge black eye after a Thursday night boxing fight my sophomore year of college when an ROTC gave me a huge shiner with a non-padded glove. My jaw still clicks from that brutal beating. That last story has nothing to do with being sick. I’m pointing out my dedication and not letting the small stuff deter me from getting shit done. However, these pains were paralyzing. I was lying under my desk and not moving because every little wince hurt. After about an hour of this pain that wasn’t going away, I decided to man up.

I remembered reading a part in the book “the Law of Success” by Napoleon Hill that said that sick people want to be sick. Healthy people who want to stay healthy don’t get sick. This book was written in the 1930’s or so and I’m not even sure germs were invented then. Nevertheless, I decided that even though I didn’t feel that way, I wasn’t going to be stopped by some stomach pains.

Prior to the pains, a foreign business associate asked me to call another person who I was aware of. We’d never spoke on the phone before but I knew of his company and reputation. Even though I didn’t feel like making the call, I did it anyway. Within a few minutes once my mind was focused on the call and not my stomach, the pain went away. I ended up speaking to the man for 45 minutes about potential business plans and what could lead to a potentially life altering path.

I went from in sheer pain to feeling great and happy about what had happened in a matter of minutes. I could never have predicted it. This is coming off a weekend where I also felt some up and down emotions which I’ll do my best to explain as clearly as possible even though it’s still not clear. This should probably be put into a separate post but I’m going with the flow.

I’ve dealt with alcohol since Freshman year of college. The very first time I drank, I puked in the corner of a college frat party, and then made out with some girl (she was not a looker and I hated seeing her around campus for the next 4 years) on the dance floor. Since that day I’ve had ups and downs that always end with “why do I drink”?

I’m going to delve into a few thoughts that non-drinkers won’t grasp and even drinkers aren’t privy to because they are unique to me and my experiences. When I drink, I’ve gotten really good at conversing. I’m not talking black out drunk where your life turns into a Viewmaster and you can’t form a new memory. I’m talking about that space where you’ve had enough to drink where it’s hard to embarrass yourself and not only can you answer tough questions, but you can ask tough questions. Also, your listening skills haven’t completely demolished and you can engage pretty deeply and positively with people. Writing that you are good at this can come across as egotistical, but I’ve read a lot on the subject matter and talk to new people every day of my life (mainly customers but people are people) that I’ve had a lot of experience.

So what starts to happen, and I hate that write this because it sounds awful but for god sake please take this in context, is that you can craft conversations. I swear that I don’t do this but the next part will come off wrong. When you actively listen, you can ask the right questions, and people can start to open up. I’m not being a phony when I’m in the moment and engaging. It’s the feeling the next day that’s there’s a good chance the full attention I gave at that moment is completely forgotten. So in order to have that level of conversation, drinking is a great facilitator, but also the reason it’s not completely authentic (because it’s not being retained). I write that because if I talk to the person again, it’s possible i don’t remember what we talked about exactly.

And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They’re usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they’re a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can’t trust a man who’s afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet.

Now here’s the kicker, the simple answer is once again, don’t drink. I’d retort with you don’t engage in these conversations if you don’t drink. If you’ve heard the phrase, “don’t trust a man who doesn’t drink”, it’s because honesty comes out when you drink. I’m having honest to god, heart felt, conversations with people and it feels good. Of course every spot is different and when I asked Rob Kelley’s girlfriend her name 3 times, that isn’t exactly a highlight. However, I had at least 12 conversations over this weekend with people who I feel closer to because I talked to them this way. If I didn’t drink, they wouldn’t have happened.

So it’s a strange feeling because I wake up on Sunday after 3 days of watching basketball and enjoying life to the max, to not feeling great and getting ready to start another sober work week. This is not what I was doing during my 20’s. I had way more stamina in my younger years and a lot of less drive. I can’t afford to be drunk during the week and this is what leads to me to drink through the weekends. It’s the times I consider truly fun (even if I can’t remember them). It’s a Catch-22 and I’ve overcome a lot since all of the mistakes I’ve made in my past. This weekend I didn’t drink and drive. I didn’t put my life in jeopardy. I didn’t do anything wrong but I have this strange feeling that something is wrong.

So that’s it. Over 1,100 words of what I felt like sharing. I’m not looking for anything at all. Just the ability to look back at this post years from now and think back to when I felt this way. All is good. Hope you are feeling good. If not, at least ok. At least Sam will like that one.

Finally…TC. Is Above The Law

All l know is, l finally got enough money…

that l can buy my way out of anything.

l can do anything l want when l get my money later.

And l won!

Finally, Big Ern is above the law!

lt’s a great feeling.

Maybe you’ve already heard, but I did manage to win a bowling tournament at South Bowl. Half drunk I should add. I’ll go over some of the finer points on my win against 23 other bowlers in an NCAA tournament like, 9 tap (9’s are considered strikes), single elimination structure.

The first match started with 3 people on a lane and the top 2 advance. I threw an open in the 3rd frame which is a big no-no and had me behind. I ended up closing with 6 strikes and advanced with a 242. Next I rolled against a guy who wasn’t in my league. I wasn’t even striking but he handed it to me. The next game I was rolling fine and hit a washout in the 10th to seal the deal. I was down to the final 4 and the next guy didn’t bowl so well and I won with no drama to advance to the final game.

The bowler I was up against had just rolled 2 300 games in a row but I wasn’t worried. Any lane at any time can give someone trouble. In bizarre fashion we both had splits in the 2nd frame. He left another open and I knew I had a great chance to win as long as I stayed tough. I was picking up a few strikes and hitting all my spares until the 9th frame when I was ahead and he was coming off of about 4 strikes. I threw a 7 10 and thought I was toast. It was pretty much all over…until he threw a 7 10. I needed to close with 2 strikes in order to win and it’s why I’m the anchor. In big spots, TC doesn’t fuck around and I took the title with a 210-202 victory. It pocketed me $180 dollars which I’ve already spent.

Cache Me Outside

I was going to use Cache Me If You Can which makes more sense because the cache is hard to pinpoint, but this is more topical.

The site is currently waiting for a release for the Avada theme that allows for the Youtube Embed code to display. Major inconvenience as it affects the entire site and pretty much ruins the meal, and possibly the evening. I’m hoping that the tech nerds figure it out shortly and release the patch.

What I’ve also noticed is that the answer to every fix is “delete your cache”. I’ve learned more about cache in the past few months than I wanted to know. Sam’s blog was brought to its knees because of some must use plugins that the server made mandatory to install. They caused problems and that’s why the site didn’t update when he’d release new posts. Since I’m on a different theme, my problems are independent of his.

That’s an update on the website and you’ll notice the traffic is through the roof. 2 days ago had 600+ people which is getting back to Storage War days.  This may not be great “sticky” traffic and bounce quickly but people coming to the site is better than the inverse.

Who Do You Listen To?

First and foremost, do not listen to me. Here is why:

  1. I react emotionally
  2. I think I’m smarter than I actually am
  3. I have bias for some reason or another
  4. Nobody knows shit

#4 is what you should take away from this post. Unless it’s Bill Belichick giving you advice on football, be wary of everyone.

NCAA Tournament Brackets

If you don’t fill out a bracket, you’re pretty much a stick in the mud and not a fun person. This is a blanket statement because there isn’t a better tournament on the entire planet and these next 4 days of sports are one of the best times of the entire year. It takes 5 minutes, it may cost you 10 dollars, just do it and enjoy it without worrying that you don’t know anything.

Jeff is picking against dunk city. He hasn’t seen this gif.

A fascinating part of this tournament is people who supposedly know what they are talking about give advice. These people range from commentators, former coaches, former players, and anyone else who looks pretty for TV. What you’ll notice is everyone has varying opinions so they can’t all be right. My strategy is to listen to everyone, than compile that info into what I think works the best.

Here are the teams that the ESPN analysts pick to make the final four – Arizona, Gonzaga, UNC, Duke, Villanova, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville and UCLA. There are some straggling WVU, Iowa State, Florida State, Michigan, Wichita State, and Oregon picks in there as well. That’s roughly 1/4 of all the teams in the tournament. I would not be surprised if there is a team that makes the final 4 that isn’t one of these teams.

That being said, you need to make a bracket to plays towards whatever pool you are picking. If it’s a pool with 200 people, you’d be an idiot to pick Villanova (16.4%) or UNC (15.8%)  who will be this years most picked champion. Especially since we are in Philly, the only way you win outright is if you outpick the other games of 40 other people if Nova manages to win. Not happening. You need to go off grid with the Jayhawks or Arizona to give yourself the best chance.

I listen to one true source for my upsets…VEGAS. Did you know the #12 seed Middle Tennessee State is favored by 1 point over Minnesota. #10 Wichita State is 6 point favorites over Dayton. Obviously you can’t see the 2nd round spreads but at least to get an idea of how good the team you are picking as an upset. I tend to use this indicator as who I then choose to move on further.

A final thought is the conference the team plays in. You could deduce that the Big 12 is a far superior conference than the Big 10. Picking the top 4 teams (Kansas, WVU, Baylor, and Iowa State) to make runs verse (Purdue, Maryland, Wisconsin, and Minnesota) makes sense. These teams mostly play each other so you have no idea what out of conference basketball looks like until this part of the year. Your guess is as good as mine.

That being said, I like to go with hot teams who won their conference championships. My brackets will have varieties of Nova, Kansas, Arizona, UNC with sprinkles of some Shocking teams, Wolverines, and Cyclones. FYI, I was close to last in my picks in last years brackets.

I’m So Busy

Sam – just so we are up to date on references.
5. 23. Skidoo.

I was reading some article today about how people love to say “how busy” they are. Being busy construes working hard which translates into self worth. People love to feel important, thus everyone saying how busy they are.

There are a lot of different ways to feel busy. Take Brian’s opinion of Lois being busy.

It’s fun to pretend.

I’m a big fan of Family Guy early episodes. Up to about the 100th episode is where the show jumped the shark. There are now nearly 300.

Didn’t mean to get off on a tangent but while I’m on one, might as well rant. I was surprised to see that print book sales in the UK were up and e-book sales were down. Unpredictable. It’s hard to understand how people of certain age groups and culture adapt to what. I’m shocked how much the older generation uses emoji’s. My mom and uncle fill the entire text field with emoji’s. I guarantee it takes them longer to find the emoji than typing the word. Maybe an emoji delivers the point in more dramatic fashion which is the allure.

How does this relate to being busy? It doesn’t. I have noticed one telling sign from today’s snow day, if customers don’t call in, I hardly get aggravated. This pretty much correlates to people on this planet making me nuts. It’s only a small % of the people but it’s amazing how small disturbances can make large impacts. I’d keep writing about this point but I’m too busy.

Have You Heard of the Smiths?

If You Were Here by the Thompson Twins was playing on 1st Wave and I said to my mom, “I wish I was born years earlier so I could have grown up with this type of music.” If You Were Here was the song playing in 16 Candles when Jake Ryan and Sam finally kiss if you were wondering. Pretty iconic. Anyway, I started naming other artists I liked such as The Cure, Tears for Fears, and The Smiths. My mom asked me, “who are the Smiths?”

UHHHH, Morrissey, ever heard of him? The most popular song on Spotify, There is a Light That Never Goes Out, has 66 million listens. I understand not liking the Smiths or not hearing their music, but never even heard of there existence?!?!

Now I’m hoping my audience is truthful and wants to participate in a poll. Please let me know below if you’ve ever heard of the rock band, The Smiths?

When People Fade Away

A Neil Young quote from My, My, Hey Hey that means it’s better to go out in a blaze of glory than to, well, fade away.

In Kurt Cobain’s suicide note he quoted Neil Young’s song “My My, Hey Hey” and the lyric “it’s Better to burn out, than to fade away.” I would suggest reading the actual text as it is quite a detailed description of a man who lost his passion in life (the website hosting this note would probably piss him off too). If you’re too lazy, here is the gist about his performances:

The worst crime I can think of would be to rip people off by faking it and pretending as if I’m having 100% fun.

I bring your attention to the Hozier album work which I’ve never viewed closely before. I see the typewriter and some beers which seem to be his workplace. His head is filled with thoughts of city life and tranquility, while his arm comes from an industrial nature. That’s what I see at first glance and I only point it out because I haven’t ever looked closely at it before and it’s a decent segue (after Jon corrected my for all intensive purposes, I’ll use segue instead of segway) into my next thought.

For the love of god don’t Google people having sex at church.

I was listening to Howard Stern and he mentioned how Hozier’s song Take Me to Church signified going to church as having sex. News to me. I suppose the lyric:

My church offers no absolutes
She tells me “worship in the bedroom

pretty much gives that away, but I never paid attention.

That noted, Howard was wondering what happened to Hozier and I had the same thought months earlier. The self titled album “Hozier” came out in 2014 and he’s only released one song since then in 2016 called Better Love. His twitter account is still popping about history and typical Hozier fashion that I’d expect:

I didn’t start this post with the intent to write about Hozier, but then I started playing the album on Spotify and figured I’d answer the question for myself. I can’t come up with any new news through basic searching.

Eminem at 18

My spark for this post was wondering how Eminem keeps writing lyrics to rap songs. This thought came to me a long time ago when I heard this lyric:

Sometimes I feel like all I ever do is
Find different ways to word the same, old song
Ever since I came a long
From the day the song called “Hi, my Name Is” dropped

The Slim Shady LP was released in February of 1999. That’s 18 years of Eminem recording music. How is he able to do the same principle over and over again without getting sick and tired of it like I imagine Hozier has. Or I’m sure you could say that he does get sick and tired of it, but he’s made to do it, so why not?

I try to relate this to normal everyday life a little bit because most people do run out of steam with whatever it is they do. I can only speak for myself, which I’m learning is most important, and I wouldn’t be able to perform an activity for 18 years no matter what it was. But what about your job? Shit. I’m 11 years into my work and I’ve learned much about the position. There is no end in sight though. I suppose it’s possible we could explode the business in the next few years but it’s more of a brick by boring brick instead of a Snapchat IPO.

What’s In a Name?

I was reading an article today about over-confident CEO’s and the man they were interviewing was named Bill Treasurer. Without much thought, I came to the conclusion that wasn’t his real name. Which made me start thinking how important is it to have a catchy name? Would this guy be the target of an article if his name was John Smith? Probably not.

In recent time, I became aware that Muhammad Ali is not a random Islam name. I knew that Muhammed was god’s messenger and most famous prophet of Islam, but I was not aware that Ali was his son in law and cousin of Muhammed, or also known as the second most prominent figure of Islam. So Cassius Clay, Muhammed Ali, just took the two most famous figures of Islam and joined them into one name. Amazingly he became one of the greatest boxers of all time and living up the standard of the name.

Another tidbit is that William Shakespeare’s wife was named Anne Hathaway. Would present day Anne Hathaway have made it if not for this coincidence?

Am I the only one who doesn’t trust people like this? You are immediately getting off on the wrong foot on the trust scale by creating your own user name. Let me bring us back to the good ol’ days of Chris Moneymaker the accountant who won the World Series of Poker back in 2003. Would you want your accountant named Moneymaker? Sounds great in theory but for someone to go above and beyond the normal means and change their name to an enticing means feels off.

Sure we have Homer Simpson and Max Power. The video game Max Payne. Usain Bolt is like a lightning bolt. Tiger Woods teeing off with woods (not to mention his first name is Eldrick).

These can’t be real.

Attaching to Inanimate Objects

I recently replaced my 46″ Sony Bravia television that I bought a decade ago. I kid thee not, the picture quality of this TV and the brand new 48″ Samsung is virtually identical. The Sony probably cost me over a K back then and my new Samsung was only $450 which I thought was pretty cheap. The Bravia didn’t have many features, only HD channels. This new “smart” TV can watch Netflix but scanning the internet is an exercise in futility. For all intensive purposes, I didn’t have to replace my TV, but the time felt right. I’m going to give it to my mom who can use it for the Pocono House and extend its life span.

The TV replacement came hand in hand with a brand new driver I bought as well. I hit a Callaway XR at GolfSmith last season but didn’t pull the trigger because it was too expensive. I impulsively went to Dick’s a few weeks ago and found the same driver for $200 and figured it was time to replace the old Ping. Now, Louie plays Ping so it’s hard for me to go against the brand, but after so many hits with it, it had run its course. After the 2nd round I played with the new driver, it was clear I made the right choice. The control was tight, as I didn’t lose a ball off the tee in 2 rounds, and I was getting my distance back towards the end of my second round. Small sample size, but I’m hoping for the best.

Both of these items I replaced had been with me for between 5 and 10 years and served me well. Whatever I paid for them was elapsed many times over which is why I’m mostly a proponent of spending more on items that you intend to last you a long time.

Nice Jeans!

However, on that TV and driver, it was like I was getting rid of a part of me. Frankly this feeling didn’t last for more than 5 seconds as yanked the plug on the TV and gave the driver to Adam, but it did exist for a very brief moment. Oddly enough when I replace my bowling ball, it doesn’t carry the same emotional weight. Some items that I get attached to:

  • The pair of jeans I wear everyday
  • Running shoes that fit so well after I while that I hate to replace
  • Old golf cards with rounds that I played well
  • Replacing a hard drive
