About Tom Stortz

Enjoying my last few responsibility free years left.

I Need To Work

As each year passes by I refine my purpose on this planet. I’ve wrote this entry dozens of times over the years but one more doesn’t hurt. My life without work is a shitshow.

The past 4 days of not working are me wasting time not in the best fashion. 4 days of this leads me to question what I’m even supposed to be doing and that starts feeling depressing. It’s not loneliness as I’m spending time with other people. The drinking doesn’t help but I even did a better job than past years at curbing that to a moderate degree. I watch some TV, play some chess, and bowl but it’s killing time with no means in ends. I’ve lost the ability to enjoy time spent as relaxing.

I know this because when I went to work today I spent 5 straight hours packing orders, answering the phone, and running a business and the time flew by. I wouldn’t say I felt alive, but at least I felt productive. This is the entire paradox of it all:

I work to make money…so that I can spend money to live…yet I spend the money in absurd fashions. Living life pretty much always costs me more money than I want it to and I don’t nearly enjoy it as much as I should. Some alternatives to how I usually waste my time:

  • In my teens and 20’s I wasted more hours than I can count on video games and I’m not going back.
  • I could give up  drinking and devote a life towards some activity that will turn me into an overzealous zealot.
  • Go on as many dates as possible to stop being “single” for the sake of not being single and then having someone else who I can share my self pity with.
  • Move to the mountains and live in a log cabin by a pond like Henry David Thoreau.
  • Keep doing what I’m doing even though I know what I’m doing is only passing time and although I’m getting less destructive, it’s still not “living”

The hardest part for me is the work aspect of life because I spend so much time doing it, that when I’m not doing it, I want to do anything else balls to the wall. I don’t want to spend weekends pretending like I’m happy. The converse though is getting wasted and feeling regret about whatever I did and the damaging effects to my body.

I look back and consider that I’m still doing whatever I was doing in my 20’s, in my 30’s, and it’s a bit unsettling as I see my friends getting married and having children. Some guys do it because they feel like they should and I’m doing my best to not force anything, but I’m also not trying hard enough. It’s also odd that I tend to ponder these situations coming off these long weekends that are alcohol induced and tend not to think much about them when I’m living a sober life style. It’s like the alcohol wearing away brings the self loathing but the without it life seems dull. I suppose I should be happy all I’m complaining about is alcohol and not the mess of other problems available.

Don’t worry about me though, I’m all good and the blog will march onward but I wanted to give a life update.

Donald’s Tweets About Morning Joe’s Co-Host Mika Brzezinski

Mika Brzezinski’s Response

What Do You Think?

I’m leaning towards yes, but that’s just me. I’m hoping this post gets an Andrew Gourlay response because I like to hear his views on our President. I personally find mocking news reporters a bit childish acting as the President. Not a good look. These are the type of comments that take neutral party people like myself and get me to start to ask, “how dumb are you?” My general political views are apathetic. There are so many parties caring about what is going on that they don’t need anymore. I’m not even sure what the President’s responsibilities are and what he actually does on his own. As such, I don’t worry much because – checks and balances, Congress, the House of Representatives, Senate, the FBI, the EPA, the NBA, the EPL, Ronald McDonald, and the Hamburgler. They’ll figure it out.

Ads That Speak To You

When I have to polish brick hammer heads, I go through the torture of listening to AM/FM. Now I’m not going to berate AM/FM listener and call them poor or stupid because that would be mean, but I’ll certainly make them aware that they fall into the sheeple category. If I wanted to listen to 4 minutes of ads for every 10 minutes of songs, I’d listen to AM/FM. 1045 even has the gall to go through 3 minutes of ads and then say, “don’t worry listeners, there will be music back in 1 minute.” Brutal listening experience and don’t even get me started on the outdated nature of the songs they play. For the record, I do get extremely annoyed when 4 of my stations on Sirius play Spoon and that godforsaken song “Hot Thoughts” and “Can I Sit Next To You”.

One positive advertising thought that came out of listening was the radio 104.5 90 minute commercial-free music session in the music. I can’t remember exactly what it was called but a company was sponsoring the session and this made me look favorably on whatever company was doing it. I can’t remember the company so it didn’t work, but I also wasn’t paying attention to it either. So rather than play an ad that is going to make me want to run over a squirrel with my car, the company gets in my good graces by a non-selfish act. Much more effective in my opinion.

With that being said, I listen to WIP every night before I go to sleep and the ads that are played are absolutely gut wrenching. Here are a few examples:

I’m getting nasty with Photoshop

Reverse Mortgage – I was told that using this company for a reverse mortgage (over the age of 62) is “the biggest no-brainer move in the history of mankind”. I’m not an expert in reverse mortgages but my initial thought is that its a deal where you get money and you sell your soul to whoever is on the otherside. I’m not far off because it’s where you get money for giving up equity in your home. Don’t get me wrong, if all your money is in your home, and your flat broke, a reverse mortgage might make sense. But there is no way it’s the biggest “no-brainer move” in the history of mankind to give away your equity at a “no doubt about it” discount.

Bolt – I apologize in advance for not grabbing my pen fast enough to jot down the details of this ad exactly. It starts off by calling you soft. Soft as in being a complete wimp but I suppose it is also referring to your dick. It proceeds to say that America is going soft with participation awards and how our fore-fathers would be completely disappointed in us. It turns out its for some energy drink to make you a badass in either life or bed, I can’t remember. It concludes by asking you to text the word “bolt” to 202020 to get a free sample. I googled this and didn’t come up with the actual product which does not seem to be Bolt Energy Drink. Like I said to start, my apologies for not getting the exact info. I’ll note that I do think America is soft as 2 members of our fantasy football league dropped out because they have responsibilities like children. Are you fucking kidding me?

Spothero – Ck4 was telling me he tried to use a parking app which reserves a parking spot for you. When he got to the area there was no spot and it turned out the app did nothing at all. I can’t possibly understand how an app is going to tell you which parking spots are open but that’s besides the point. The ad used “it’s like dropping an egg in coffee” which had me scratching my head. It’s like your so busy you have to make some disgusting drink to hurry up? How about waking up 5 minutes earlier so you can cook your egg? The point is that your in a rush you can’t be troubled by finding a parking spot. This app will save the day. I don’t believe it.

Fighting With Technology

My tech world has been spun upside down lately. I’ve been using “make your head spin” when people aren’t going to understand what I’m trying to communicate. It’s also is a good way to make what I’m about to say more important. Back to my tech world which has been in a twirl.

Back when hacking was cool.

Security Scare – I was worried that my computer was infected when I got an email from Google saying someone tried to log in to my Gmail account. This put me on a mission to alter passwords and make sure I was up to date on all my patches. It’s alarming to think that I was altering passwords that someone may have had a keystroke log on my system (Evan assured me this isn’t much of a concern). There were no real indications of a breach and I moved from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for extra security. This process was relatively seamless but caused a few new problems. I want to add that the Gmail email was a phishing scam as well.

Outlook -After I moved to Windows 10, Outlook was not indexing my emails properly which was causing issues searching through 3 years of emails (a major hindrance). I had about 3 years  of emails on one PST file and I wanted to back it up to move to Outlook 365. Unfortunately the file was so big (19gb) that I was having a significant problem getting the file to backup properly while I was using the computer. I ended up archiving a few years worth of data to make this more manageable with the hope that the switch over with multiple PST files to upload is easier.

JC’s Laptop – In one of the weirder stories, my dad allowed some random 3rd party to get remote access to his computer (old people…). The guy told him that he needed $100 dollars to install the latest “malware” defense. JC had no idea what was going on, called me, I told him to shut down the computer immediately (having no clue who it was), and next thing he knew he couldn’t boot up. I took his computer and ran defender scans and it came up perfectly clean with no issues whatsoever. He ended up going to a fake Discover card website and inputted his card number and either social or who knows what else. From what I can tell he came out clean but people are getting low nowadays.

Imagine Dragons – Evolve

The 2012 album Night Visions by Imagine Dragons is a top 25 “of all time” album for me. The deluxe version has 16 songs and it’s safe to say that every single one is worth listening to. The hits were Radioactive, It’s Time, Demons, and On Top of the World. The lesser known tracks of Tiptoe, Hear Me, Every Night, and America are dynamite as well. Monster introductory album.

The 2014 Album Smoke and Mirrors was an expected let down. How can you top 16 stellar tracks? I Bet My Life, Gold, and Shots were hits off of it but the secondary tracks weren’t worth listening to. For most bands, 3 hits would be considered a smashing success but for Imagine Dragons the band needed to go back to the drawing board.

Evolve

This brings us to 2017 and the album Evolve was released last week. Evolve is a dumb name for an album because it’s like the band is making the point that they are evolving, which if you have to make the point, I think it’s missing the point. Nevertheless, tracks have been slowly released for a few weeks now so there were 7 or 8 that were fresh on the market. Pre-released tracks were Whatever it Takes, Believer, and Walking the Wire. Believer made it big and the other two were so-so. The best songs on the current album are I Don’t Know Why and I’ll Make It Up To You. I’ve listened to the rest of the album a few times and it doesn’t blow me away. It’s not bad, but it’s not Night Visions. I can’t quite explain why. It’s just not music that I’m going to actively select on my playlist. Take the song Fool by Fitz and Tantrums and I think they have a better feel for the 2017 music game. Give it a listen and see what you think.

Embiid’s Tweet About Lonzo Ball

I couldn’t have said it any better than Jeff did:
Embiid, get on the court.

The Best Time Of The Year – Summer

Here we have Joel Embiid making waves with Lonzo Ball insults. What does this accomplish? It allows the media to have a field day with story lines that draw attention away from the actual basketball that hasn’t been played.

What I love about what is happening is the hype train. You fully see that hype sells just as well as success. How does a team that is 75-253 in the past 4 years sell out its stadium before the season even starts? It’s the mystery behind the potential of the unknown that people can’t get enough of. They want to say “I told you so” before the “so” has even touched the court.

It’s miraculous when you think about it.

  • The Sixers best player, Embiid, has played 31 games in 3 years.
  • Ben Simmons has never played a game in the NBA.
  • Their newest draft pick has 1 year of college experience on a team with a 9-23 record.
  • Dario averaged 17.5 in the last 24 games of the season in which he started which shows he can score at the NBA level.
  • I’ll use Covington at the 5th starter who hasn’t shot higher than 40% from the field in the past 3 years and was 33% from deep last year.
  • The bench consists of Okafor (Sixers fans would value him near 0), Holmes (ready to break out), and McConnell (who has convinced fans he is a serviceable PG).

This is your starting point 4 years after the fact when Hinkie started the process. Now don’t get me wrong, this is an entertaining starting point. You don’t really know how much talent you have, but you know it’s oozing. Whether these guys can turn this to success on the court is unknown.

Process Trusters will say, “dude, you’re a hater”. What am I hating? How am I being realistic vs living in fantasy Sixers land? Take a look at the odds to win the 2018 championship:

That’s progress. They have the 13th best odds to win the ship this year. 16 teams make the playoffs so you even see Vegas predicting they are going to. I tend to think this is more because Sixers fans are unpredictable and may hammer this 66-1, so why make it 100-1? It’s the power of the unknown.

To bring it all full circle, the 17′-18′ season is going to be incredibly fun to watch as a Sixers fan. The energy created around the team is electric. It’s hard to not get caught up in what the team has been able to do after 4 years of losing. What have they actually done is more off the court than on the court, but that’s what makes it so enticing. You have one side saying it’ll never work and another saying that it can’t fail. At this point in time, neither is wrong which makes for the most talk.

I’ll finish this post the same way I started this post. The Sixers future lies in their health. Get (and stay) on the court!

Social Media Groupthink

I posted my finishing picture, race start, and a link to the post I wrote on my Facebook page and it received 50 likes. That’s unheard of when you lead with a quote from Dave Gildea. Plus I didn’t even put the post on the FB race page because the link wasn’t taking which is a whole other issue. For those wondering, which is not many, instead of adding the link to my page, I added the album with a link to the blog which is seemingly preferred.

If the fill in the blank is “black man”, I have to shake my head. Using the underline isn’t exactly being obscure.

I ask myself, “why did this post receive more attention than pretty much any post I’ve ever put on Facebook?” A few thoughts:

  • It was a decent picture. I ran a high pass / overlay in Photoshop and it made it come out sharp with detail. The picture itself is what it is, me finishing a 5k, which apparently is new to a lot of people as well.
  • The time was surprising for a 33 year old. Most people have families or work and are unable to stay in shape throughout their life. Considering I have neither, I’m able to post a reasonably fast time for my age group.  Whether people can translate this effectively is as good as anyone’s guess.
  • A few people started liking / commenting on the post. Once the post gets more than 10 likes, the group think starts churning and makes people think it’s better than what it really is. The exact number of people who came over from Facebook was 50 with a bounce rate of 80%. At least read the post!

I conclude that people follow the herd. I’ve been doing races for over a decade and no one gives a shit. This particular case was sprung by a decent picture, a few comments, and maybe a slow news day in summer. It’s pretty much why trying to understand social media can be a giant headache. We all know that the only events people care about are getting married, getting a girlfriend, or having a baby. Guaranteed 100 likes.

I’ll comment on the vanity it takes to need social media approval. This little experiment of posting the race doesn’t have me yearning for more approval. I don’t want approval from someone who doesn’t know the difference between a 5k and 5 mile time. I’d rather have 1 “genuinely understanding” like than a million sheeple. It’s sad if you prefer the inverse which is more apparent nowadays.

Tex Mex 5k 2017

What did you think about the race?
It was good. The 2nd mile sucked. – Dave Gildea

I’m going to start this post writing that I know I plan on posting this to the Facebook page of the Tex Mex 5k with the hopes that random people read this experience.

Tex Mex 5k

8th place, 17:08

First things first, I don’t do a lot of races and I know what I like about the ones I do. This is my 3rd or 4th year running the Tex Mex and I’m always pleased with the preparation and organization that goes into this one. It’s not easy getting 1,300 runners all in one place and making it run (nice pun) smoothly.

This is my blog so you have to read about my experience. I understand if you pass on. I ate a bagel and coffee for breakfast and ate a Jewish hoagie for lunch. I came home and drank a coco-water and ate some pineapple before the race. I sat in over an hour of traffic from Philly to get to the race which I was prepared for. I parked in the Merck lot and jogged over to take a whiz and get my bib. I did so no problem and warmed up a bit before the race.

Coming into this race I was encouraged after a nice 40 minute workout on Friday but had taken it easy since then. I wasn’t sure what to expect time wise. Last year I finished in 10th place with a 17:15. This year, my ankle was bothering me and I’ve been training every other day so I wouldn’t sideline myself permanently. My expectations were tempered but I was hopeful.

The Race

2017 Tex Mex 5k Start

I started near the front and got out relatively quickly. I was packed up at about the 10 spot early on and was moderately surprised that they didn’t pull away faster. I hit the first mile in 5:13 and saw that Sam, my brother, was only a few seconds ahead. I wasn’t breathing heavy and felt good on the uphill following the 1st mile. No one was passing me so I was feeling pretty confident crossing the 2 mile mark. After finishing the next uphill, I knew I had only the downhill left. Unfortunately I was gassed and didn’t have much kick coming in. A guy who I’d been running with for the race put about 10 meters on me and I was pleased no one out kicked me towards the end. I finished with a 17:08 and in 8th place.

Further congrats go to Sam for finishing in 5th with a 16:17. Dave Gildea was in the low 21’s which I believe was satisfactory towards his goal of lower times. CK4 set a PR with a 23:23 time that I’m sure he’ll remember for quite some time. Nikkii was in the 27’s and the rest of the Softerware team finished strong. I guess Sam will indeed be shaving his head. Click here for full results.

Afterthoughts

  • C’Mon!

I like the promptness of the race starting on time

  • The after-party is well done. Free beer and food is enjoyed by all. I wasn’t a huge fan of what was actually being served, but it seemed healthy and well placed for runners.
  • Cash bar is fine but charging $8 for the Blood Money pint is overkill. We just ran a 5k and instead of $6, it’s $8.00. People notice.
  • Results came in quick and timely. Prizes distributed quickly
  • The t-shirt is not one I’d ever wear. I don’t wear shirts that have maps on them. Think style in terms of getting your name out there. I don’t mind wearing a logo, but I have to pass on an entire map.
  • The band is a cool feature.

I only do about 3 or 4 races a year and I’m happy to make this one of them.

Do not read further.

If you’ve read further. This is the blood blister I got on my foot after the race and the aftermath.

How’d He Die?

I went to Yahoo and looked at the top headlines:

Daniel Day Lewis Quits Acting – Who cares?
Johnny Depp is Now Johnny Debt (How Didn’t They Use This Title) – Boo Hoo.
Colin Kapernick Still a Kaperdick – Get a new schtick

Then I saw this one

Prodigy dies at age 42

My first instinct was the guys who sang Breathe and Firestarter died. I thought they were a group (actually The Prodigy) so I read on to make sure I got my facts straight. Turns out it’s Prodigy of Mobb Deep who died from sickle cell anemia at the age of 42. I’m not that familiar with Prodigy and his impact made no difference in my life, but for some reason or another I needed to know how he died at the age of 42. This was not normal.

I asked myself, why did I care how he died? In the mortal sense, I’m always concerned for my own well being that it’s important to be cognizant of how people around you are dying. When you read about terrorist attacks or people being burned alive in buildings, you chalk these up to freak occurrences and “wrong place, wrong time” type deals. Nothing to worry about. Then you’ll read about the other breed of people who are too rich and get into drugs or too poor and get themselves shot over drugs. Drugs are bad, mmmkay. These don’t apply either. So when you see someone dead at 42 due to neither of these instances, it’s important to know why.

Sickle Cell Anemia is inherent at birth so I let out a sigh of relief. The #1 instinct of a human is survival. Some people disregard this natural born instinct but it’s very much in my mind. I’m pretty sure you only get one crack at life before you get reincarnated as a leaf or kite. Who knows. But dying at 42 is too young. Go see your doctor.

Don’t Be Weighed Down

Below is chart of obesity by State from 2003 to 2015 in the United States. Yellow means fat. What should be startling is that the dark black is still 20%. Colorado and DC are the more fit states while the Southeast is scary.

I’ve had this post in my back pocket for a bit but this chart was the icing on the cake. I can’t quantify it, but when I look around the 1 mile radius that I live in, I’d guess 85% of the people are overweight. Being in shape now a days is a rarity. I can’t tell if people take health less seriously or it’s straight up laziness. A few factors to consider:

  • Income level – People with less money eat unhealthy foods which in turn makes them fatter, quicker. Think fast food.
  • America – The portion sizes in the US are huge. After scrolling through the comments, serving sizes in America are 2x as big as Europe.
  • Exercise – Or lack there of. This can also go hand in hand with a general apathetic attitude towards staying fit.
  • Personally – I don’t eat healthy but I also exercise almost daily. If you are going to drink 20 beers a week and never eat a vegetable, you have to balance that out with some sort of exercise. It’s not that hard to do so and keeps you feeling better about yourself.
