Angry Birds Attack in Lego Form

Rovio –  The makers of Angry Birds, the most downloaded mobile game ever, today announced a partnership with The LEGO Group to develop a line of construction toys.

legoangrybirdsNow this is a billion dollar idea.  A grape, not a raisin.  I have no idea if they will create this the way that I envision it in my mind but I’ll give you a run down.

  • Birds are not legos.  They are essentially marble sized projectiles that will get sling shot into a structure.
  • Structures are built in simple, bigger lego form.  Since they are going to be knocked down, you can’t be spending hours building a fortress that comes down in one shot.
  • Pigs are placed in various areas of the structure and once crushed, they explode.

GOAL:  KNOCK OVER THE STRUCTURE WITH THE BIRDS TO DESTROY THE PIGS.

Will It Be Made This Way?

Dynamic-Lego-Angry-Birds-3D-puzzle-9No it won’t.  There is too much risk of the game spiraling out of control and the kids using the sling shots as weapons.  Most likely the birds will be made out of pillows and the structures out of feathers.   The pic to the right looks boring as shit.  I don’t want to build a projectile I’m going to shoot.  I want my projectile to be fast and punishing.  I want to spend time destroying and not building.  Maybe the kids could wear goggles when playing.  This game has potential.

Now That’s How You Tweet / Troll

This tweet has gotten my most everything ever. Career highs in favorites, retweets, and engagements. I owe this to knowing how to tweet using hash tags and who to tweet at. It doesn’t hurt that the material is top notch from a relatively unknown source. For more Ken M trolls visit HorseySurprise.  I have to add that using Wickerpedia as a punch line is fucking genius.

Email Inbox Must Be 0

When someone uses the subject line for text meant in the body

When someone uses the subject line for text meant in the body

I like getting emails.  It makes me feel like I’ve created some sort of activity within my life.  People trying to sell me stuff.  People wanting to buy stuff.  People just trying to communicate with me.  Email is about 10x more important to me than text messages which I have to guess is the exact inverse of our youth culture.

That being said, I don’t fuck around with my email.  I have two accounts set up, one that gets all my spam and that I sign up for shit with and one that is all business and used for people who I want to contact me.  My phone receives all the mail which I’m always checking away from work, but I rely on Microsoft Outlook for all interaction.  Only when I really, really need to have a timely response will I use my phone.  So how do I use Outlook?

email

This is outlook on my home computer. I don’t use it.

Secondary Email

imagesEvery single piece of mail gets read so that it becomes unread.  No strays.  I will shift+delete all mail that I view as trash and never want to see again.  This permanently deletes it.  Any emails that need responses get responded to in brief sentences because this inbox rarely gets anything very important.  If there is an email that is important to this email, there’s a possibility I will forget about it.  For example, I received an email that invited me to a golf outing at 3pm on Sunday.  I want to play but I also have an unknown tee time earlier in the day that makes it impossible to commit.  This would be a rare email that I just can’t respond to and would possibly forget.  This is a rarity.

Primary Email

south-parkI treat the primary email differently because it’s impossible to respond to each email immediately.  I’ll scan through the emails and print out any emails that I know I need to return to.  This leaves a hard copy on my desk that won’t get forgotten.  All other emails get read and the same shift+delete gets used so my trash can is always empty.  The idea of looking through deleted items would drive me crazy.  Every email gets responded to at some point or another and I’ll even take a few minutes when I feel caught up to go back and make sure I didn’t leave any over the previous few days.  There is never a time when my inbox has a number next to it.

How do you use your email? (I took these from another site that I’m too lazy to list)

People who still use @aol.com

People who still use @aol.com

The filer/deleter

This is the person who sees a message in his inbox and takes action immediately. As in, he reads the email, sends a response if it calls for one, and then either deletes it (because it’s no longer useful) or archives it in a specific folder. His email count typically hovers around zero.

The saver

The saver has few unread emails in her inbox, but rarely deletes a message after she reads it.  Essentially, saving emails is a way of deluding themselves into thinking they’ll get around to addressing them all.

When your inbox reads 0

When your inbox reads 0

The ignorer

Keeping hundreds or thousands of unread emails in your inbox isn’t necessarily a problematic behavior.  On the one hand leaving emails unread can signify that you’re overwhelmed or disengaged. On the other hand, “it can also mean that you recognize that [monitoring and organizing those emails] isn’t helping you achieve progress. And that’s a sign of intelligence.”  Some email ignorers might actually be more organized and productive than everyone else. After all, Friedman says, “email reflects other people’s priorities for you, not necessarily important work that requires your immediate attention.”

Samantha Elauf Case Sets Horrible Precendent

Samantha Elauf

Samantha Elauf

(CNN)  The Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Muslim woman who has sued retailer Abercrombie & Fitch when the store failed to hire her because she wore a head scarf in observance of her religion.

The court ruled 8-1 that the company failed to accommodate Samantha Elauf’s religious needs when she was not hired on the basis that her hijab violated company dress policy.

What The Fuck?

samanthaelaufTo sum up what happened, in 2008, Samantha Elauf interviewed with a head scarf, the interviewer consulted with her manager who then said she shouldn’t be hired “because the scarf was inconsistent with the look policy that bans head gear.”  This info was not relayed properly.

If  Abercrombie would have said, “We have a rule that you can’t wear head coverings at all, is that a problem for you?’ That’s a way to bring it up without getting into religion”, said Jennifer Goldstein, the commission’s associate general counsel.

So you’re saying that this wouldn’t even be a case that lasted 7 years if someone at Abercrombie handled this interview process by saying that we don’t allow head coverings? Our country is so damn sensitive to religion that it’s a travesty.  Abercrombie and Fitch is in business to make money.  They can choose who they want to represent their company.  If an individual doesn’t fit their mold, or strays away from their image that best suits them to make a profit, they have that choice to not hire.

Abercrombie-Fitch-Samantha-ElaufIs it commonplace within Samantha Elauf’s religion to SUE A MAJOR CORPORATION!!!   Does her god believe in receiving sums of money for being treating (not even) unfairly?  If she wants the job so bad, she can take off her head scarf.  If she can’t do that, she should find another place to work.  If I went to a Muslim country and said I must wear my Catholic cross as an employee, do you think I’d be able to sue the company who didn’t hire me?  No.  I truly believe America is a fantastic country to live in but we are getting so uptight it is spiraling out of control.

Why Biker Gangs Are Fascinating

The Hell’s Angels

Aged 14 and 15 …                             4,000 Cyclists Invade Monterey
Stinking, Hairy Thugs

The Red and White

The Red and White

These are just a few of the headlines in 1964 when summarizing acts committed by the most notorious biker gang, the Hell’s Angels.  Hunter S. Thompson’s book titled “Hell’s Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga” recounts his experience traveling with the gang back in the early 60’s and gives a firsthand account of the Angels.  Here are few passages taken from the book to give an idea of who the Hell’s Angels are.

  • a_rare_glimpse_into_hells_angels_motor_gangs_life_640_24The powerful stench they are said to exude is not so much body odor as the smell of old grease in their crusty uniforms.  Every Angel recruit comes to his initiation wearing a new pair of Levis and a matching jacket with the sleeves cut off and a spotless emblem on the back.  The ceremony varies from one chapter to another but the main feature is always the defiling of the initiate’s new uniform.  A bucket of dung and urine will  be collected during the meeting, them poured on the newcomer’s head in a solemn baptismal.
  • The Hell’s Angels will continue to be arrested for rape with monotonous regularity.  It has come to be known as one of their specialties.

“I have seen them try to amuse an outsider by telling stories which they consider funny – but which generate fear and queasiness in a listener whose sense of humor has a different kind of filter.  Some of the outlaws understand this communications gap, but most are puzzled and insulted to hear that “normal people” consider them horrible.”

  • When an Angel punches a non-angel, all other angels will participate
  • Very simple rule of thumb, “a fellow Angel is always right”.  To disagree with a Hell’s Angel is to be wrong – and to persist in being wrong is an open challenge.

Hunter’s findings also highlight runs he does with the Angels where a few hundred members gather at a specified location and simply party.  Every law enforcement personnel is notified of the angels traveling and does their best to confine them within the agreed upon area.  Their parties typically include alcohol, weed, LSD, and more pills than a pharmacy.  The parties last days and the city is always holding their breath until it’s over.  Let’s not forget this is the 1960’s and news travels a bit slower which is how stories get exaggerated.

The Mongols

The Black and White

The Black and White

“In order to become a prospect, I had to complete an official Mongols application.  I was a little stunned when Rocky handed it to me one day at his house;  it was 3 pages long, and more intense – and personal- than applications I’d filled out to become a law enforcement officer.  The mongols wanted to know everything from your Social Security number to how long your dick was.” – Bill Queen from Under and Alone

This passage is from an undercover officer named Bill Queen who spent 2 years of his life with the Mongols and eventually went from a prospect to a full patch or official member of the group.  His operation led to 42 arrests in 2000.  It was the most successful investigation into an Outlaw Motorcycle Gang at the time.

  • Billy Queen - Undercover Agent in the Mongols

Billy Queen – Undercover Agent in the Mongols

A biker wears his colors like a neon sign, announcing to the world precisely who he is.  And make no mistake: Outlaw bikers want you to know who they are.

  • Among outsiders, the Hells Angels may have the most famous name, but within the world of the 1 percenters, there’s not a gang more feared than the Mongols.  Their motto is “Respect few, fear none.”
  • For gangs like the Mongols, membership means a 24 hour a day commitment to The Life.  They despise legitimacy and have no desire to look like anything other than who they are.
  • “I began to realize that Easy was so brave in the face of danger because he wanted to die.  Like a terrorist who straps explosives to his own body, Easy had that conflation of suicidal and homicidal impulses.  He was going to kill his sisters’ two children slowly in front of her.  Beside me, Easy pulled his knife out and gripped it tightly in one hand, saying that was going to hold the kids by their hair and cut their throats while his sister watched them struggle for their lives.”

Twin Peaks Shootout

A deadly weekend shootout involving rival motorcycle gangs apparently began with a parking dispute and someone running over a gang member’s foot, police said Tuesday. (Rod Aydelotte/Waco Tribune Herald, via AP)

On May, 17th 2015, a shoot-out in Waco, Texas left 9 bikers dead and 171 arrested.  The biker gangs involved were from the Bandidos and the Cossacks.  The incident developed because the Cossacks members were refusing to pay Bandidos dues for operating in Texas and for claiming Texas as their territory by wearing the Texas bottom rocker on their vests, or ‘colors’.

  • A Confederation of Clubs meeting was occuring – All authorized and recognized clubs come together to talk about the social and political events that effect the biker community as a whole. These events are held regionally all over the state of Texas.  The Bandido’s were hosting the meeting and The Cossacks were invited in order to make peace.
  • Crime scene at Twin Peaks

    Crime scene at Twin Peaks

Eyewitness Report –  the Cossacks arrived first and were on the restaurant patio when approximately 100 Bandidos arrived. One of their motorcycles struck a Cossacks member in the parking lot, knocking him down. A brief fistfight between a Cossack and a Bandido ended when the Bandido fatally shot the man in the head. Within seconds, two other Cossacks were shot and killed. The Cossacks ran away, and some who tripped and fell were also shot.

  • Twin Peaks blew it –  the “breastaurant” featuring scantily clad female waitresses, was aware of the biker meetup and refused to cooperate with police, authorities said. Peakstastic Beverages, LLC is the owner of the franchise. That company released a statement denying it was advised by police or Twin Peaks against holding the event, and contending that the violence (without specifying fighting or shooting) began in the parking lot, rather than in the building.
  • People being unarrested

    People being unarrested

The police were also aware of the meeting – they were outside when it began due to the history of the clubs and potential danger a meeting like this may have.  It’s still unknown how many victims were shot by police but early reports suggest 4.  This blogger isn’t so sure all the story is being told factually.  Awesome dissection here.

This is truly a bizarre scene that still has many details open to the public.  Why wasn’t the restaurant cooperating with police?  Was the entire sit down a set up by the Bandidos to attack the Cossacks and were the owners of Twin Peaks aware of such details?   Do police just start shooting the minute the gangs are fleeing for safety?

McDonald’s You Dirty Dog!

What Changes to Expect at McDonald’s

  • McDonald's Logo

    I’m Lovin It

Change the way it sears its beef so that its burger patties are juicer

  • Warm its burger buns because warm buns = more delicious
  • Build more side by side drive through lanes to speed up service
  • Train employees to increase the accuracy of orders
    • Order takers now must repeat the entire order to customers and ask if it’s correct. Cashiers are then to repeat the first food item in the order and verify its accuracy. “Do this by asking, ‘Hi, does your order include a Big Mac no cheese?’” states a 31-page instruction manual on the new procedures
  • This McDonalds kid gets it

What Europe thinks America looks like

    Launch a mobile app

  • Expect higher quality food but don’t stray too far from Big Macs and Nuggets which make up 40% of revenue
    • Milk in happy meals will be free of artificial growth hormones
    • Stop selling chicken in the US made from birds raised with antibiotics

McDonald’s Quandries

McDonalds is a $93 billion dollar company and its stock is trading near it’s all time high.  With around $27 billion in revenue the last 3 years the company only netted $4.7 BILLION last year vs $5.5 the 2 years before.  This is a cause for concern, due to lack of growth, for the 14,000 stores spread out across the US.  Lets analyze where they are going wrong.

  • Food is unhealthy – Our society has taken a turn towards healthier alternatives and McDonald’s reputation is the Big Mac and nuggets as stated above.  They’ve tried to add healthier options but lets face it, healthy people don’t eat at McDonald’s regardless.  It’s like being a fitness model and walking into Jenny Craig.
  • Reviews like these – I must add that these are not the best areas in Phillymcdonaldsphilly
  • Service like this –  I found this picture on Yelp (there are dozens more) at a McDonalds on Market St (you know, Philly’s central street in Center City) that had this comment:  “This is their definition of a large fries! Ordered 3 large fries and each were not fully filled as promised! Disappointing!”Large Fry at Mcdonalds
  • 1424466706337It’s McDonalds – Since 1940 McDonald’s has been a staple of American culture.  Trying to change it’s image is like steering a thousand foot ship.  It’s known for unhealthy burgers, fattening fries, and huge tooth decaying drinks.  The customers who enjoy McDonalds are the sloth of society.  Sure their breakfast is delicious but people out there are making efforts to steer away from McDonalds.

What Should McDonald’s do?

  • Super Size MeThe general stigma is McDonald’s makes you fat.  The food has horrible ingredients and documentaries like Super Size Me have exposed this.  What McDonald’s should do is make a reverse documentary showing how someone can live off McDonald’s and with proper exercise and balance, they can become a contributing member of society.
  • Another obvious place to start is improving the employee morale.  Yes they make minimum wage but after reading those Google reviews, they obviously don’t give a fuck.  This is a huge area to improve although I’m aware that some McDonald’s in nicer areas are probably clean and tidy.
  • New CEO

    New CEO

It’s time to 180.  Bring back Ronald McDonald as the spokesperson and have him do serious speeches as a clown.  Embace the Big Mac and turn it into the Big Heart Attack.  Offer Chicken Nuggets that ARE ACTUALLY HEALTHY.  Make the drive thru’s have games to play where customer win free food with positive results.  Everyone knows how popular that shitty Monopoly game is where no one ever gets Boardwalk.  Concede to all day breakfast, obviously.

It’s all in the image.  Smarter people than me are working on this issue.  I  personally have no problem with McDonald’s but it would be quite the American tragedy if it were to crumble in bankruptcy (which is certainly not the case).

My Top Websites To Visit

rabbitWhen Alex comments he links his name to what.com.  I have no idea if this is on purpose or not but I learned this yesterday.  What I found was a site categorizing headlines from major news sites like Google, Rolling Stone, and CNet.  The tagline is, “Everything that’s hot, top, now, popular and what.”  The site is moderately entertaining.

With no sense if Alex actually meant to lead me to this site, I figured I’d make a post of useful sites I visit and that you should probably too.  I’d ask you to comment on your favorite sites but this will fall on blind eyes.  Cute little bunny though.

Top Websites

redditReddit.com – If you don’t read Reddit, you are behind the internet.  Top stories are always popping up on Reddit first.  Reddit is user based which means the community posts and than upvotes determine what makes the first page.  If you make the first page, you are a boss who gets tons of attention.   This is why information is always posted ASAP because people yearn for the notoriety.   Not to mention that the NSFW pics are always top notch.   This site is especially useful if you are bored.  The commentors are also some of the smartest people and this is half the fun of perusing Reddit.  I don’t frequent the subreddits except celebs.

yahooYahoo.com – Call me a dinosaur but I actually like Yahoo.  I think their slideshow of 50+ stories are sort of hokey but they keep me up to date.  The finance section is one of the best and I have an affinity for their fantasy sports.  I think they are also trying to be more hip as they show stories from other sites like SBnation, Sports Illustrated, and the Huffington Post.  I’m sure this selection will draw the harshest criticism.

unnamedTwitter.com – The only way to stay current with Twitter is to check it non-stop.  The top comments are always the ones left immediately after the tweet has been posted.  I unfortunately don’t do that.  I have it on my phone and will check it when I’m really bored.  I wish I could comment on more tweets and actually tweet more myself but it’s a full time job to be witty on Twitter.  I still think this is the most fascinating means of communication because it comes directly from the source.

barstoolBarstool.com – I’m not as big of a stoolie as I once was because I find their content to be watered down with the increased amount of bloggers.  I can’t stand the re-post because it shows a lack of professionalism.  I also am tired of the Guess That … and most of the material is drab.  Pres is hilarious though and worth getting his slant on any major sporting event.  This is where you get an inside scoop on topics that fly under the radar.  Don’t forget the merch. “Hats are fire pres! You did it again you dirty dog!”

Losing Touch With Video Games

Spyro on the Portal of Power

Spyro on the Portal of Power

There is a video game called Skylanders that was released in 2011.   Games in the series are played by placing character figures on the “Portal of Power”, a device that reads the figures’ tags through NFC and “imports” the character represented by the figure into the game as a playable character.  Essentially, an interactive, action figure collecting, video game.  Please pardon my ignorance if I get some info wrong but I’m old.

Where have I been?

“Wait…this is only PART of an OLD collection!?“

“Wait…this is only PART of an OLD collection!?“

Activision (the creator of Guitar Hero and Call of Duty) has apparently nailed another dream for younger (and older nerdy) gamers.  As of February 2015, the Skylanders series has crossed the threshold of $3 billion in sales, with 175 million toys sold since 2011, making the series one of the top 20 highest-selling video game franchises of all time.

Toys as characters?

4 years after the release I’m finally learning that gamers are purchasing action figures, standing them on the “Portal of Power”, and having the character interact with the video game.  Let me see if I can nail down the allure without ever having played the game or saw a figurine.

  • Don't mess with this fucker.

    Don’t mess with this fucker.

Figurines are seen as collectibles.  The same way a rare “magic” card was desirable; harder to find figurines are worth spending for.

  • My assumption is some figurines are better than other figurines and thus worth more money?
  • The ability to purchase and collect weapons.  The same way Diablo had better, more unique weapons, this game does as well.
  • Ability to brag that your character is better than your friends.  So not only is he better in the game, but you can bring him over to your friends’ house and show off how much more kick ass he is in real life.

Even McDonalds has gotten into the craze offering free toys.  I’d guess these are shitty version but hats off to smart marketing to the 10+ year old gamers.

News Travels Slow to the Old

Bulwinkle J. Moose

Bulwinkle J. Moose

When I see this I wonder how this is the first I’ve ever heard of a craze so rampant amongst the younger generation? This has been going on for years and 175 million action figures of only this game have been sold. I have to imagine there are other consoles offering competing versions and the demand for “cool” characters like Batman, Scooby Doo, and Bulwinkle exist. What a concept. It just shows how easy it is to be out of touch with a generation when you never interact with them.

WSJ Tidbits

I’m going to italicize some statements from Wall Street Journal articles and comment on them below.

“He says some 40% of American women wear size 14 and above.  The plus size market in the US account for roughly $9 billion in revenue and is expected to grow strongly through 2019, according to IBISworld Inc.”

I found it somewhat haunting that with all the facts surrounding obesity that a marketing company is predicting that the plus size market will continue to get stronger over the next 4 years.

kenya-tribesmen-phone-490x250Less than 20% of Africans use the internet.  However, the continent’s youth are increasingly getting online, creating an enormous potential market.  {On taxi drivers} they also both take cash and payment via cellphone in a country where fewer than 3% of people have credit cards but more than 90% have mobile phones.

This article was going over Uber’s expansion into Africa and the challenges for safety and payment.  If only 3% of people have credit cards, new payment methods are needed.  The general thought in Kenya is that civilians will not get into cars with people they do not know.  Other services are hiring known commodity drivers to compete with Uber.

Skechers was quite happy when Meb won the 2014 Boston Marathon

Skechers was quite happy when Meb won the 2014 Boston Marathon

Skechers accounted for 5% of the sports-footwear market…moving past Adidas AG’s 4.6% as well as the 4% notched by Asics and New Balance.  Nike Inc… accounts for 62% of athletic shoes sold in the US.  Most of Skecher’s growth has come from its walking and casual footwear segments.

I knew Nike was big but wasn’t exactly aware of how big.  Skechers also doesn’t strike me as an athletic shoe so the 5% also surprised me.  I can’t really see myself ever trying a pair of Skechers running shoes but call me close minded.

300 lbs in 700 Days

Ronnie Weight LossI’m not sure if there stories are a time a dozen (I’d imagine they aren’t) but Ronnie was told he wouldn’t make it to age 35 at his current 600lb wait unless he changed his lifestyle dramatically. The video documents his 700 day journey of getting back in shape “the old fashioned way”.  He also is a huge Taylor Swift fan.

This to me is personally uplifting because this is what hard work looks like.  No BS diet (I’m sure he did alter this though). No lipo suction. Just hard work. My gut feeling is other people just complain that they are out of shape and that it’s beyond their control for why they don’t look the way they want. If a guy who is 600 lbs and can’t do anything more than use a hand bike, there are no excuses. Well done Ronnie. Yeah BUDDY!
