Gambling

Bets I made and lost and how I’m doing for the season.
For the season I’m down 60 dollars as of today. That’s 3 weeks of gambling to only be down 50 bucks. I was pretty good this weekend picking Temple, Iowa, Wisc, SF, NO (thank you Evan) but lost Oregon St (nice bake…) Indy and Carolina (sorry for picking against you Evan, we’ll see if I learned my lesson). My new strategy is to just pick the game mindlessly without even thinking about it. I just look at the teams and think whose going to win. I’m honestly ecstatic that I’ve only lost 20 dollars a week betting on sports.

I’ve been playing a lot of poker as well. I’m in for about 450 bucks in the past 60 days and I have about 225 in my account. This is obviously not good but I’m positive that it will turn and when it does it will turn fast. I don’t even want to begin to explain what happens in some of these tournaments. The game is really fucking with me because I don’t lose on the flop. The game takes me to the turn or river and ends me with cards that just defy odds. I’ve been running about 20 tourny’s a day and I’m just waiting for my time because I feel like I’m playing good.

My posts are obviously going to start changing now that the winter is coming upon us. I’ll still do my tv posts with Curb, Dexter, Californication, and Entourage but I also will be gambling and drinking more and running less. I haven’t exercised in 9 days which is when the distance run ended and I will start up again but it won’t be my main focus. I’ll just stay in shape rather than try to be good at anything in particular. The winter is depressing, long and cold and I don’t like it.

Evan thought Sesame street aired in 1997 and I uncoil a slinky to 3.75 feet.

Wedding Weekend

My childhood friend (and still friend) Bud Schmidt had his wedding this weekend. He appointed me a groomsman and gave me responsibilities like walking his Mom down the aisle to commence the wedding, ushering guests, and lighting candles. Of course I’d rather do nothing but was happy to follow any directions I was given. Watching the forever wedding entrance on Youtube makes me sick to my stomach thinking that people would go to all the trouble to put on a performance like that. The worst singled out moment was entering the reception with a dance move. The bridesmaid and I settled on a spin move instead of the somersault that I was lobbying for. Everything went off without a hitch and I’m sure the couple will be live happily ever after (I know that’s for fairy-tales but it seems appropriate)

I wanted to devote a paragraph to the Schmidt Family and just to write that the Schmidt’s are probably the nicest people I know. They’ve known me for my whole life and have never treated wrong in any way. They didn’t get mad at me when I popped the unpoppable ball with the clue knife. Bill used to scream THOMAS CHARLES whenever I made an error in the field, but he did it because he just wanted me to be as good as I could be. They liked me when I was growing up as an innocent child and they still like me even now when I’m a corrupted, alcoholic, degenerate gambler. Just yesterday, Bill took me out to play golf at one of the nicest country clubs in the area for practically nothing. With his caddying help of reading the greens I was able to shoot a 97 (without it I would have been 110+). This family gets my utmost respect for being the most genuine people I know and I’m sure with the addition of the Hodge family they will continue to be at the top of my list. (I don’t really have a list but you get the phrase)

What now?

I’ve got a feeling. Not that tonight is gonna be a good night. But that the wheels have been set in motion. I have no idea what’s going to happen but events that have happened in the past few weeks or months will set off the future. I’m not even saying this “thing” will happen to me but things seem to be happening. Business has been pretty slow lately. When you are self employed, it’s up to you to make money. You are the deciding factor on how big your pay check is. The thing is, money isn’t my driving factor. I would rather do something I like doing, make less money, but enjoy life, rather than spend hour after hour doing something that just spends time. I was put into the position of figuring out how to sell hand tools. Hand tools aren’t my interest. I treat them as the product and the goal is to sell as much of the product as possible. Maybe I’d rather spend my time studying financial strategies like covered calls and naked puts. It would beat working if you could figure out how to make money in the market. Maybe I could learn how to buy and sell real estate and make profits understanding the foreclosure system or distressed properties. Maybe I could devote my time to online poker and try to beat what is really just a game. Making a living playing a game beats selling a roofing tool to a contractor trying to make 25%. I’m in no way saying I’m leaving Stortz tools but I regress to, “something is going to happen.”

I can’t really figure out what I’m missing. I feel like Peter Gibbons in Office Space. You go to work everyday to survive. Most people don’t like their job. I’m not sure if they is true or not but I see where it comes from. I’ve been doing this for 4+ years now. To think that I will do this for another 35 is scary at this point. It becomes a routine. I see people on weekdays at 11 am just doing nothing. Walking the streets without a care in the world. Sometimes I think I would like to be that person. I want to be like Kevin Spacey in American Beauty. Give me a job with the least responsibility possible. I want to live as stress free and I want to enjoy myself rather than being a slave to the money and then dying. (verve reference I know) People get families and then the family consumes their life. I think I’m feeling the point where I’ve done the education, I’ve done the next phase of work, and now it’s like “what now”?

*I’m not Nostradamus and I really may have no clue what I’m talking about. Entourage was a 19 minutes joke of an episode. True Blood is good as usual. Weed’s is avg but no where near as good as it was.

Thank you – the college years

I want to thank Brian Sutton for punching me in my jaw during our Thursday night drunk boxing matches. It literally clicks every time I open my mouth. I can’t exactly verify that it was his punch that did it (he would be honored I’m sure) but we had that one video where you could hear the pop (if anyone still has these on their computer I’d like to put them up). An amusing story to the drunk fights. I remember having a pretty good record until the one night I was pitted against someone from the ROTC. I was obviously hammered and I have a feeling he wasn’t very tipsy. Anyhow, I was like a jolly, drunken antelope going up against ferocious, lion ready to kill. He was using the black gloves with hardly any padding (my excuse) and beat me to a pulp. I woke up the next morning with a huge shiner and that put a halt to my amateur boxing career. Those Thursday night beer pong nights could go down as some of my favorite nights of my college career. One of the Doors albums was a staple to those nights and I get reminded of that time every time I hear it. I used to be so on point with my beer pong game that you’d have to bring your A game to stand a chance. Now a couple of years later I am a mere shadow of my former self.

I’d like to thank the late Brian Gallagher for introducing me to the music genre known as “classic rock”. Coming out of high school I really only listened to rap. I’m not really sure why but I guess it was a weird phase. I really can’t stand the stuff now. Some of the songs are catchy but there is never anything worth listening to in the songs nowadays. I feel like an old man saying “dang those kids and their hip-hop.” Anyway, Gallagher introduced me to Billy Joel, the Eagles, the Stones, Bruce, and all other classic icons. Music has really changed my life. I mean that no so much that I live my life based on what music says but I like listening to songs with good lyrics and good music. Music can make me happy. If you can sit down in a group of friends, play some good jams, and drink a few beers, I can’t really think of too many things that I’d rather do. And just a Brian Gallagher memento, he really liked the movie Glory Daze and Cocktail. He listened to “i’ve just seen a face” by the Beatles on repeat as well as “moonlight shadow” by mike oldfield, “the rising” by bruce, and “already gone” by the eagles. There were others but these come to mind. He was a good person who got lost in the game of life.

I’d like to thank the teachers from Pitt for teaching me nothing. You can give me formulas, I can plug in numbers, I can get your answers. You taught me about option trading but without real life situations, it just meant nothing. You taught me the time value of money, but not the value of the dollar. You give me interest rates to plug into formulas and I didn’t even know what it stood for in the real world. I come out of college with a plethora of numbers with no meaning. Not to mention all the classes I slept through just to get a stupid letter. I have just past the 4 year mark of working a full time job. In these past 4 years I’ve learned more about real life than I could have ever learned in the sheltered dome of college. I suppose college just gets you ready for the world and is an excuse to party for 4 more years, but I really took nothing out of it but the friends who get lost at no fault to anyone. I value my degree because I did put carefully planned hard work into it, but all it really is is a piece of paper.

My final thank you wasn’t part of my college years but helped me understand how to beat the educational system. Dave Krieg was a crafty jew. I like referring to Jews as crafty because they are always looking for that edge. A lot of my friends are Jewish so I don’t feel like I’m being anti-Semitic but they tend to be smart people looking for ways to beat the system. Dave Krieg taught me two things that I will not forget. The first being “the move”. “The move” is used on the basketball court to beat defenders. I feel bad even exposing it but it’s a jab step left and then a move right. It literally works 97 percent of the time. It can only be used every once and a while because people start to catch on, but in tight times it’s essential to ones arsenal. He also gave me his foul shot routine, which he won’t want me to take credit for, but it’s a one left hand dribble followed by two rights. He was a good foul shooter, sadly, I am not. The second thing he taught me was how to cheat. This is where the craftiness comes out. This guy would literally cheat on his blood test if it would benefit him. We’d take sneak peaks at teachers desks, position our desks to cheat off the smart kid, find people in the same class but earlier periods. It’s all standard procedure but I’m not sure the guy ever had a thought that was his own. I truly admired it. Do as little work as possible and succeed past our educational system.

All these things that go through peoples lives mold them into the people they are today. Sometimes you have to be influenced by other people to become a better person. It’s impossible to know everything by yourself. I can say I’ve grown as a person in the last 4 years coming out of college. I take better care of myself, I’ve learned how to support myself, and I do a better job of helping the economy by contributing to the bars of the area. People are constantly coming and going but the good lord willing, (I don’t believe in god) I will continue to survive and thrive.

Life is Good

I haven’t wrote (written?) anything in about a week. It’s not that I can’t. I think of stupid shit every day that could be blog material. I could fill you in on every detail of my life. I went to the Billy Joel-Elton John concert last Thursday. I sat section 114, row 7, seat 10. I wanted to hear Mona Lisa’s by Elton and River of Dreams by Billy. Billy came through, Elton sadly, did not. Billy played Zanzibar and it has become one of my favorites. On Friday I told a girl I loved her when in reality I loved her in that moment. That really isn’t love and I tend to say some incredible things after 8 hours of drinking. A girl who I met 2 weeks before told me her name for the 3rd time and to this day I still can’t remember it. There’s more to this story but it’s left to someone elses recollection. Saturday we drove down the shore at 2pm and stood in a completely packed OD bar to see Go Go Gadget and some other band who I didn’t know. You don’t see that kind of atmosphere everyday. I did a 4 horseman after doing a 3 wiseman the night before just to instill in my mind what a man’s shot is. I spent more money on alcohol this weekend than some families spend on food in a month. This is my alcohol filled weekend. I had a tremendous time and the mere hangovers don’t compete with the amount of fun during the binge. Some people can read this and say that it’s really sad that you need alcohol to have fun. All I can respond with is that books and movie theaters don’t float my boat. Give me a buy one get one free happy hour any day.

Should I feel that this is blogworthy and when I get a chance the next day I have to “blog about this.” I don’t because there is a reflection period after things that you do that requires consideration. Or remembering, whichever comes first. I don’t feel that this is a medium to share my life. Everyone has there own life, mine’s not anymore interesting than yours. I go to work 5 days and then party it up on the weekends. I’ll continue to write down my thoughts though. Things that I see that need to be corrected. Things that I have to brag about because I’m better than you at it. Things that you maybe wouldn’t see because you aren’t looking at them from my far fetched point of view.

I may be a complete goof on the weekends, I will not deny this absolute truth. But I do hold certain values, a code if you will. (I’ve been watching too much Dexter) I am honest. If I’m thinking it, then you’ll know it. I’m trustworthy. I usually won’t spill the beans. I have to apologize to Baker about giving up the info about the toothbrush, but it was too funny too keep in. If you such a smart guy though, wouldn’t you just replace it? The number 1 rule though, is to enjoy life. Right now I really have no worries. I have little responsibilities and like it that way. I do as I please and am just trying to enjoy it while it lasts (my youth not my life). I got lucky to be born into a family where I have a family business job that pays me ok. I have nice shelter, a fine car, and good friends who put up with my shit. I do work hard but I don’t take everything that has been giving to me for granted. At this point in my life I am really just trying to live it up. This will assure me to continue doing unbelievably stupid and ridiculous things, but isn’t that what life’s about? No one remembers the lame sober night, but no one forgets frost bite, post offices, and root canals.

Grinding

This is my first post in a week or so. Since I haven’t been updating this I don’t really expect too many people to continue tuning in. I’ve been doing a fair amount of shit, just none of it blog worthy. This post will pertain to my job and I don’t expect to be too entertaining. It’s going to be a lot of complaining and whining so just be prepared if you are going to continue reading.

My dad and I went down to Baltimore to call on a few dealers. I haven’t seen Baltimore in a while but I was impressed by how nice the inner harbor area is. We ate at this upscale place for lunch where the lunch prices were entree prices. I order some pasta with lobster in it for 18 bucks and I thought it was terrible. It wouldn’t even call it a portion and it looked and tasted like puke. The dealers we visited were all nice people but in the end didn’t write any business.

What is happening in our world is that bigger companies are acquiring smaller companies. When this occurs, the larger corporation takes power from the people on the floor to place orders. All ordering must be done through corporate buyers. This poses a problem to us as a smaller company. How do we get the corporate buyer to stock all of their branches with our product, which really only sells to a niche market? This is an example of the question I’m confronted with on a daily basis.

I don’t go to work everyday and sit at my desk and do the same shit daily. I don’t have a routine. It’s my job to figure out how to sell the head buyer of a company that has 250 stores why he should stock my product. How do I blister package my paint scraper so it will sell in Sherwin Williams nationwide without raising my cost so much that it prices the product out of the market? A competitor just came out with a quality product to rival our number 1 moneymaker and will most likely cut into market share. This is the shit I deal with on a day to day basis. Not to mention the phones calls that come in from our customers saying that this thing not working or how do I do this.

People probably read the lines above and think, wow sounds like you have a lot of responsibility, that most be really cool. Yeah, it’s also a lot of pressure. If the business doesn’t make money there isn’t anyone there to sign the paycheck. There becomes no paycheck. Sometimes I have the philosophy of Kevin Spacey in American Beauty. Just give me a job with the least responsibility and have someone sign my paycheck, I don’t even care how much I make as long as I can live.

After 4+ years of doing this I’m starting to wear out a little bit. My dad has taught me how to run a business profitably. I know what it takes. My only thought is that I’m going to be working for the next 30 years of my life. This is the end of being “young”. There’s only a year or two of getting away with goofing off and having an excuse. The idea of getting older doesn’t hit you until you realize you aren’t young. I’m just complaining because my youth is fading and I’m getting wrapped up in work and I don’t like it.

Business trip with JC

One Wed and Thurs I went down to the Baltimore, DC, and Virginia area for a business trip with my dad. I will be referring to my dad as JC for the rest of the story. My dad is an interesting person and in this post I am not making fun of him, only making fun of the situations he gets himself into. If you read this and you are friends with him I prefer you not to tell him about this post because it could make him self conscience (doubtful) and not act like his normal self.

I wake up at 5:30 on Wednesday. JC has been up since 4. I packed the night before. I brought two dress shirts, two pair of pants, two shoes, and a pair of casual clothes. I shower and am dressed and ready to go by about 6am. JC comes down with 2 sport coats, 4 dress shirts, 4 polos, 3 pairs of pants and is flipping out that he hadn’t had the chance to try on all his clothes to make sure they fit. We end up getting out of the house by 6:30.

I drove and JC is the ultimate passenger driver. If I’m in the wrong lane he’ll be sure to ask me why am I not in the fast lane. I have a theory that the left lane is always the fastest in tight traffic. There is no point to switch lanes, just ride the left. JC loves the Waffle House. He knows of this obscure one off some random exit that we go to. It’s not bad, but I think it’s incredibly unhealthy (not that I really care). We get to our first stop and I pass it on the opposite side of the road so JC suggests a U-turn. I come to the first spot with a sign that specifically says no U-Turns. I do it at the request of JC and literally there’s a cop at the top of the hill immediately after I do it. We luckily escape and he tells me that I have to watch for cops, yeah thanks JC. At one point we came to a fork in the road I was like, “JC, which way?” He’s in the passenger seat and points to a direction. Considering i’m driving I’m not looking over to see where he’s pointing and from my angle it looks like he’s pointing perfectly straight. So I start telling him just say left or right and stop pointing like a tard. After that little rift we moved on.

We make a couple more stops and then it’s time for lunch. JC loves diners so we go to another one of his hotspots. He isn’t the sharpest person at times and leaves his glasses at one of the stops but thankfully remembers at the last moment. At the very next stop he ends up leaving his briefcase in the person’s office so the guy ends up delivering to our hotel which was lucky. He was freaking out at one point because his pants were too long and he ended up stepping on some gum and it got on the pant leg. So after he was done complaining about the tailor we finished the day. I went running in Rockville which is just super highway galore so it wasn’t very fun. Our day ended with us going to another diner. A hilarious thing he does when he’s eating and talking at the same time is that he uses hand gestures. It always seems that he has this glass with a ton of liquid in it and he starts waving his hands frantically when he’s talking. I just sit there watching, thinking if I should tell him to be careful. On one hand i’m hoping he knocks the glass over just so that it will teach him a lesson. On the other I’m not looking forward to the mess it will make. The glass escaped unharmed this time though.

We wake up the next morning and we check out and get on the road. We go to another waffle house. After getting on the highway, I’m about to merge and JC just took a swig of mouthwash. He puts his window down and then starts spazzing out telling me to pull over to the shoulder. I’m like what the fuck is wrong, are you having a heart attack. He ends up opening the door and spitting out the mouthwash. He tells me that he was chewing a wad of gum and it would have been a problem if he spit it out the window. Moving on. There is a customer in Vienna who is a very unique person. Years ago he told my dad that he looked like the 2nd baseman for the Orioles. So we go into the store and there is some usual banter and the guy says to my dad, “you know who you look like, Chase Utley. No, No wait a second you have a real big nose, you look more like Ryan Howard. At this point I can barely control myself from laughing but the guy was a bit out there. We leave that stop and go to eat at yet another diner.

His final hurrah came on our way home when we stopped at a dairy queen. I get an oreo blizzard and order him a banana creme blizzard. After I order he decides he’s hungry (2 hours after just eating) and orders a quarter pounder and a water. It costs $4.28. We leave the DQ and he wants to eat in the car. About a quarter mile down the road he realizes he forgot the water. Then he looks at the burger, takes one bite, and says “this isn’t for me.” I’m thinking “wow, nice way to spend $4.28.

He’s not the easiest traveling partner but he does a good job as a salesman. I had a good time on the trip and we didn’t blank so it was worth it. I’m sure everyone thinks their dad is a bit quirky from time to time but these are first hand experiences of some unusual occurrences. He certainly has some unique qualities but I’m happy he’s my dad.

“blogging”

I don’t have a blog. I’m embarrassed when people will be like “oh you blog.” If someone came to me and said read my blog, “I’d be like no way, blogs are for fags.” You certainly can call this a blog if you wish but that doesn’t mean I will. I like to think of it as giving the public the insight of a 25 year old binge drinker who attempts to balance living a healthy lifestyle during the week and a drunk on the weekends. I keep this site to try to give some amusement to anyone who decides to read.

I’m going to use this next paragraph to describe my take on life. Today is the first day back to work for me after taking all of last week off. I haven’t worked in about 11 days give or take. You can do that when you are self employed. However, when you aren’t working, you aren’t making money. There is no paid vacation. There were many nights (all but 2) in those 11 days where I drank a shitload and partied too hard. This does not equate to good living. This makes my body angry and each morning you pay the price with a headache and a nasty dump. In no way whatsoever do I like this feeling. So why do it then? Life is too boring and too short not to. I know every person is different and I’m not calling anyone out but my idea of a good time isn’t watching movies on a Saturday night. Good stories are generally produced from too much alcohol.

I went to AC on Thursday night by myself to play poker. I sat there for 5 hours, won 52 bucks, spent 5 on a Power sobe and a bag of peanut m & m’s and 5 on parking and I walked away with a net gain of 42 dollars. I drank about 6 beers over this period, not many, and then went home. I wasn’t drunk and I stayed clear of every table game on the way out. Did I just have fun? Honestly, I don’t even know. Not doing any “real” gambling wasn’t much fun. I can’t have fun going out with no drinks in me. I can’t remember the fun if I have too much to drink and then I have to regret doing the fun things the next day. It’s a tough spot to manage.

I think what’s happening is I’ve come to a point in my life where it’s finally time to grow up and just be responsible. I’ve been getting wasted literally almost every weekend for the past 8 years. I’m not going to give up drinking. I don’t consider myself an alcoholic because I don’t need alcohol and I’m able to work the business and I keep myself in better physical shape than most. After you go through a “vacation” like I just went through, you just have to take a step back and reevaluate the situation. This is day 1 of getting back into regular me mode. I think you’ll notice that my posts will improve as the week goes on and I get more and more detoxed from these past days.

My phone is in working order again after I ran it through the washing machine. I got a new one because of my insurance and I was pretty impressed with the speed of the insurance company. Definitely worth the 8 bucks a month.

This week is a run everyday sort of week to lose the love handles that I put on by drinking too much beer. I honestly believe that running is the only way to get rid of love handles. Eating too much bad shit gives you a gut, but beer gives you love handles. Have to stay active, Phils 5k is coming up.

Shore

I’m going to try to cram as much as I can remember into one post documenting the last couple days.

I left on Thursday to go to one of our old neighbors 80th birthday party at the White Briar in Avalon. He has this party every 5 years so it doesn’t come around all that often. Drinks were flowing and everyone had a good time. The waiter took the liberty of spilling a wine glass on myself and the guy next to me. Now I smelled like Zinfandel but wasn’t going to let that deter me from enjoying the night. After the party I went to Sea Isle to hang with some people that I don’t see too often anymore but we usually have a good time getting bombed together. We went to OD in Sea Isle where I somehow met this girl that got with a guy that I was staying with for the night. I was running some decent drunk game and was able to get some smooches but that was pretty much the extent. We swapped numbers which was a mistake on her part as I drunk texted some probably questionably inappropriate messages later in the week. She was a nice girl but that’s all she wrote and if I never see her again I won’t be shedding a tear.

On Friday I woke up and started throwing some beers back. Bought some cigars and scotch and pretty much wasted the day away. I had to go back home though because I had to attend a wedding for my dad’s brother’s daughter. The wedding was fine and the receptionist was at a nice place in Chalfont? called nostalgia. My 2 brothers and my sister were seated a table where a friend of the bride was telling us how she has gay mallard ducks in here yard. Apparently 20 percent of mallard ducks are gay, who knew?

We left the wedding and headed back down the shore. We went to the Princeton in Avalon which turned out to be interesting to say the least. One of my friends wanted me to go talk to this older woman (45 or so but had a really nice body). So I do and throw some game. After a while I can’t really see where this was headed and decided to try to find someone who wasn’t twice my age. Nothing else to eventful occurred until we go back to our house and my friend decided it was a good idea to bring the cougar back to the house. She was a nice but started asking me what I thought about the Iranian Gov’t issues and I pretty much had had enough.

My one friend started to like this one girl while we were down there and we hung out with her the next night. This was Sunday night and nothing was really happening so we went to the Princeton again but it isn’t exciting on Sundays. Monday we went to the Windrift on 80th or so and it was pretty average. I got bombed off of a 6 pack of riverhorse beer which I tried. It was 6.5 % alcohol which got me buzzed. Then I started drinking some coors lights and then a cup of Red Delicious boxed wine. Then at the Windrift they had Corona ponies which I drank like 10 of and also a shot of Jameson and a Yuengling. So I’m pretty wasted and we go over to the neighbors house and they proceed to kick me out because I was being my usual jovial self and this one girl wasn’t digging it. So she started freaking out and that finished the night.

Tuesday night was the Wagon’s birthday. He said he was going to get wasted but didn’t even close to live up to the hype. I bought him a shot of Patron, that he said he didn’t want, and he proceeded to take the shot and then puke it up in a cup immediately after. From here on out I won’t be buying him anymore shots. Nothing else too eventful happened (that I remember) that night but I woke up feeling awful. After 5 nights of heavy drinking I had had enough. I went home last night to play in our bball game which was canceled and had my first sober night in a while. I’m at work right now taking care of some things but will be heading back down the shore to play some poker at the Borgata. That’s where I’m at right now and am looking forward to the next couple nights.

Also, I ran my Blackberry Storm through the wash so if you’ve called me and I haven’t picked up, that could be the reason. I didn’t proof read this either so there could be many errors.
