Salesperson Battle

I received an e-mail with this is a subject line exactly as typed:

10 email mistakes home services businesses make

I’ve always treated the subject as a title and thought it should look like this “10 Email Mistakes Home Services Businesses Make”. For a company that specialized in e-mails, this struck me as odd.

Not knowing if my thought on the subject line was correct, I decided to reply to her email.

She responded with:

The Fuck is Going On?

Call-Centre#17 said not to use ALL CAPS in an email which was a misinterpretation of what I was referring to.  2 minutes later she called on the phone and started off her intro with “This is Jessica with a capital J.”  I didn’t laugh because it wasn’t funny.  I could hear chatter on the other end of the line which showed me she was in a call center.  After I explained to her that I thought her email was leveling me (they make the title wrong so you’d call and point it out to them which worked remarkably well), it was clear this was not her intention.  I gave her the floor asking her what her company did.

Business Man and Red Phone Series

Business Man and Red Phone Series

She sounded nervous going through her patter which I was picking up on as she was babbling incessantly about nothing I had an interest in.  This is an inexperienced salesperson’s first mistake to not cater to the customer but assuming their cookie cutter sales pitch will appeal to a real person.  At some point I stopped her and started telling her about what our company does and she told me that her company doesn’t do what I needed.  She proceeded to tell me that we weren’t a good fit.  At this point I once again thought I was being leveled because what kind of salesperson says the services their company is offering is useless to a potential client.  I was dumbfounded.

It reminded me of this situation.

Ziglar-quoteIn no way do I regard myself as an expert salesman but there’s a good chance after doing it for 10 years now that I’ve acquired skills that a 22 year old in a call center hasn’t learned. Being able to align a service to a customer is not as tricky as it sounds but you have to be polished enough to not make the other side not question your expertise. I questioned this process at every single point because I wanted to see if it was done with intentional leveling. This particular case was not but the method is curious. Does anyone else find this interaction interesting?

Not Caring About Money Purchasing

vJGeJIt was slightly raining today and I’ve had my car over 3 years without changing the windshield wiper blades. Instead of clearing the water from the windshield, the wiping process just leaves smears all over the windshield. It’s extremely aggravating because it’s hard to see clearly.

Today I finally said enough is enough and purchased them online.  I typed this and it brought up this.

acuratlwipers

from-the-practical-source-becca-christensenYou can see I clicked on the first site and bought the wipers. They totaled $50 dollars with $8 shipping. The ones in Google Shopping say $4.69 & $7.95 dollars. I didn’t care about saving money. These wiper blades are worth about $200 dollars to me. When you actually need a product, money does not matter. Plus I don’t want cheap wiper blades. I want the official wiper blades for my car. Some people may disagree with this but the time I would have to spend to save a few extra dollars is not worth it.

The Future Waits for No One

Watch the future.

futureisnowThese crack me up.  On one hand it looks like it is failing miserably.  On the other hand, it’s amazing for a robotic arm to be able to work like this.  You could give me the next 10 years and I wouldn’t have a robotic arm this advanced.  The duct tape on the machine is hilarious.

A Chicken Biscuit for Breakfast

Dunkin-Donuts-Chicken-Biscuit-SandwichAs I was in line today in Dunkin Donuts I heard one person order a chicken biscuit and another an Oreo Cappuccino.  Am I the only one blown away by these selections?  It’s 7:13am and people are eating chicken and Oreo milkshakes for breakfast.

Now where I start to get confused is if I should be disturbed by the people or the establishments offering these choices.  My first thought was to blame Dunkin but this is incorrect.  A business primary function is to serve it’s customers and they are offering what the customers want.

Obesity Map

Obesity Map

On to the customers.  Are the customers uneducated, know but don’t care, or just flat out oblivious?  You could make the argument that I know beer is not good for me but I drink it anyway.  If I order a beer at 9 am is that any different than this example?  For me it feels different.  This is because I rate my selection of drinking beer as one of my worst vices.  However, if you are eating an Oreo Milkshake at 7am, I have a feeling this isn’t your worst habit.

I don’t exactly know why ordering chicken at 7am is wrong but my instinct tells me it is.  My “wrong” instinct hits red alert.  Enough to make me want to post about it and try to (not) get opinions on the subject matter.  Does anyone else feel strongly about this matter?

Evaluating Tyson’s Corner Stores

Tyson’s Corner is not a corner.  It’s a giant clusterfuck of human activity that no human being wants to enter.  It took me 10 minutes to drive .7 miles.  There are some positives though because it’s at the forefront of “fashion” considering the road leading in is Fashion Drive (it’s very self aware).  I was told that King’s come from foreign lands to spend money.  Fortunately for you, I snapped some shots of the experience.

This is what the parking lot counter looks like.  It tells you how many spots are available.

How does it know? There are sensors that show the open spaces. This was the first time I’ve ever seen this so I thought I had to pay. I was very confused.

This is the Microsoft store which looks eerily similar to the Apple store.

The Tesla store is first class.

I took this picture specifically so I could write that this must be a very small market.

The Galleria is actually the rich mall and you’ll see stores that cannot be pronounced.

Klosterman is a Genius

I’m reading I Wear The Black Hat…again…and this is one of the most briliant interpretations I’ve read about NWA and their mantra:

20q-chuckklosterman-splshThere were lot of contradictions, and I like contradictions.  Fore example: The line everyone remembers from Straight Outta Compton is Cube’s defining Mantra, “LIfe ain’t nuthin’ but bitches and money.”  It embodied the ethos of the entire genre, and -over time- I’ve heard it sardonically applied to just about every possible situaiton life can offer.  Yet elsewhere on the very same record, Easy-E asks, “So what about the bitch who got shot?  Fuck her!  You think I give a damn about a bitch?  I ain’t a sucker.”  In other words, life is only about bitches and money, but even the bitches don’t particularly matter.  This is weapon-grade nihilism: There were only two meaningful elements within their entire worldview..and one could be totally eliminated without consequences!

The Worst Kind of People

The inspiration for this post. Self centered people are the worst on the planet. It’s if they don’t realize there are 7 billion other people occupying the same space this is certainly not reserved for them.  Her shoes being off is worse than taking up the room in my mind.  People’s feet are smelly and gross and she’s exuding her odorous feet throughout the entire train.

I find this funny from afar but if I was sitting in the john and didn’t notice, I’d privately applaud the prank and publicly cry and waddle.

The Window of Success

The_Law_of_SuccessI’m reading Napoleon Hill’s book the Law of Success in 16 Lessons. for the 2nd time.  This book is a life changer.  It was written in 1925 so the fact that it’s even available this many years later shows its legitimacy.  It covers principals to “make it” in the world.  How to be a better person leaning towards the business side.  It creates an enthusiasm for life that you otherwise don’t feel.  It charges you up.

I’m only on the 3rd principal but my brain has already begun churning about how I’m operating with thought towards my business, my relationships, and my own personal goals.  A couple key ideas from the early reading:

  • Find a mate who will push you to higher levels
  • Auto-suggestion is recommended to achieve success
  • Know what it is you want to do

i_now_pronounce_you_chuck_and_larry_02502I’m independent.  I don’t have a fear of loneliness which is why I’m picky on the first point.  I’m too judgmental to give females a chance and too much of a pussy to just get what I want.

Real life example to help expand on this.  I had dinner with the President of a company that is much larger than ours.  He has a daughter that is 24 or 25, good looking, and looking to be a lawyer.  So not only is this girl aligned with my business (and could only strengthen the business relationship), but she’s hot and smart.  This is the type of girl I should be going after.

So I compare that with meeting a random girl at the cider festival today and hoping that we spark it up together and I begin to question.  Now the obvious answer (and what I suck at doing) is to just get out there and experiment.  It’s really that simple.  Perhaps there is too much thought being put into this as I’m sure everyone has their own opinion on this part of life but I consider that I’m 31 and still have 50 more years to live. It seems to me that putting extra thought into who you want to spend your life with and help you grow is worthwhile.

I ran out of time today (gotta hit that cider festival) to expand on the 2nd points but I’m sure I’ll bring it up in the future. Onward to the weekend. Michigan -8. Stay tuned for DK picks.

Be Leery of a One Flush Person

My worst nightmare which is why I always double flush.

My worst nightmare which is why I always double flush.

I very rarely leave a BM (as grandmom used to say) with only one flush.  The only way this happens is pinching one perfectly clean when you pretty much don’t even need to wipe.  Unless your diet is leaves and berries, this doesn’t happen often (don’t quote me on that diet either).  There are 2 main types of people who get away with one flush and they are:

  1. People who clog the toilet with too much TP
  2. People who don’t fully wipe

149296I’m naturally a clean person.  I’ll sometimes shower before I go to the gym only to shower again immediately after.  Being clean makes me feel better physically as well as mentally.  If I was sitting in filth right now, I’d only be thinking about getting clean.

With this understanding of always wanting to be clean, I don’t leave a bathroom dump without fully wiping.  This can require as many as 8-10 wipes but when I’m done, I’m done.  Most toilets don’t handle 8-10 wipes of TP  which would make any user grimace in its presence.  So I’ll usually wipe 3-4 times, flush, then do a secondary wipe.  Howard Stern insists that the only way to get fully clean is to use baby wipes but I’ve never bought into that theory.  Scott TP is good enough for me.  The people who get away with only one flush are either extremely efficient with their wiping, or they aren’t doing a good job.  Which one are you?

Just Don’t Be a Video or Slideshow

Sometimes I’ll check rnningfool.com to see if it gets updated…

My office.

My office.

When I’m stuck for ideas I have about 50 or so drafts that at one point in time I thought they were good ideas for posts.  It’s like going to the well and there being some water at the bottom but it’s pretty muddy and you’re not sure if it’s ok to drink or not.  This is one of those posts because the ideas I have for other posts are too far out and will require more time.

With that incredible lead up I’m sure you’re on your hands and knees (that’s not the right expression) with excitement for what comes next.  If you were Sherlock Holmes, you could guess that the title could be a clue to what I’m going to express disdain for.  I hate clicking links that lead to videos or slideshows.

Yahoo!_Video_-_It's_On_1293655408822Videos –  I hate commitment.  It’s why I don’t return text messages on time, respond to Facebook invites, or have ever had a serious girlfriend.  The idea of clicking on a link that sends me to a video that is 3 minutes long basically blows up my brain.  If I go to YouTube and find a video myself I have no problem with that because I’m mentally prepared to watch the video because I’ve blocked that time for that activity.  However, when I’m clicking around, I don’t want to be tied down to a clip.  I’m like a bald eagle that was just released into nature.  I need to be free.  Please use text.

toriblackSlideshows – The bane of the internet.  The slideshow is stupidity in web browser form.  Most slideshows are “51 Pornstars Who Aren’t Wearing Makeup,” or “Can you believe these people were once fat!”  Then they give you one big picture with a snippet of text.  What’s worse is that they make you click 3 times for each sentence before moving on to the next part of the list.  It would be one thing if the click was instantaneous but it’s not.  There is a pause every single time you click.  I can’t even remember the last time I deemed information valuable through a slideshow.  If a slideshow is your preferred method of getting information,  it’s highly likely you’re a complete moron.
