Who’s Always Funny?

I was thinking about what current comedians were consistently funny in movies and shows and only a few came to mind. You’d think that there would be a lot more humorous people making it to the screens but I’m not seeing it. I almost feel the need to go back in time a bit to re-hash some legends so we are all on the same page of what humor is. Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber vaulted his run of box office comedic legend (not so much anymore). Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and Steve Martin were big in the 80’s and always good for laughs. The late Chris Farley, George Carlin and Jim Belushi were hysterical while alive. Will Ferrell and Mike Meyers were, and still are, high profile draws. These actors though have been around and there haven’t been many new players to replace them. I do feel like there is still some decent talent out there.

Seth Rogen
He’s a merry fellow. I get the feeling he’d be a blast to hang out with. Smoke a few J’s, drink some beers, and have Seth keep your side splitting all day long. He understands humor. When he was the lead in Knocked Up it was like who the hell is this guy? Since then he’s gone on to kick the movie industry square in the teeth and take it by storm. That doesn’t mean that everything he does is going to be awesome (Observe and Report, Green Hornet, Funny People) but that’s not his fault. He has even shown the range of doing serious movies, 50/50, which he was great in. He is routinely clever and witty and makes you like him. He’s gone on Howard Stern numerous times as well and he’s completely open and honest. The guy will be around for a long time.

Workaholics Crew
workaholics
For the uneducated, this crew is made up of Blake Anderson, Adam DeVine, Anders Holm, and co-creator Kyle Newacheck. They are hugely underrated although I believe they are starting to gain some speed. Adam DeVine (we share the same birthday, same year) has appeared in some major films like Pitch Perfect but that’s about the only thing these guys have gotten into mainstream outside of the show. I have to add the cameo appearance they had recently in Arrested Development as a place you may recognize them. I think they fall in the Trey Stone – Matt Parker category of creating a show that people write off as childish but it has way more depth than critics give it credit for. Workaholics has jokes that kill episode after episode that are easy to miss unless you are on your toes. I’m looking forward to this group making more anything. Check out the clip of one of their first productions which is awesome. Jumper, laugh out loud.

Seth MacFarlane
Seth Macfarlane
He wins at life. On May 4, 2008, after approximately two and a half years of negotiations, MacFarlane reached a $100-million agreement with Fox to keep Family Guy and American Dad until 2012. The agreement makes him the world’s highest paid television writer. I personally have never watched American Dad or The Cleveland Show. I have a feeling they suck. What I do know though is that when Seth MacFarlane was putting in his effort for Family Guy (probably the first 4-5 seasons before a ton of writers starting taking over the jokes) it was the funniest show on television. When the guys of South Park are mocking you because you use cutaways for your jokes, you know they have to feel a little threatened. I probably have to watch Ted as well but I’m sort of biased on my love of early Family Guy for this pick. I get the feeling he’s incredibly intelligent as well. If you can not laugh through this roast you are a less funny person than I.

A few misses
-Adam Sandler was on the right path but took a complete U-Turn after Big Daddy.
-Jonah Hill is not funny in anything, ever, after I read that Rolling Stone article.
-Paul Rudd for some reason is put on a pedestal. He’s ok, but not really a comedian like he’s portrayed.

TV Interaction = Loose Butthole

interactive_television

I’ve grown to be a pretty big fan of Workaholics. Netflix only has the first season so I’ve been re-watching all of those episodes. The first season isn’t bad but the show has improved since then with Adam, Blake, and Ders really coming into their own. So I used a line, loose butthole in the title, which appears way more often in the beginning compared to now. For the uninformed, you don’t want a loose butthole, you want a tight butthole. So anything can be called loose or tight butthole. If you are wearing a stupid hat, the hat is loose butthole. Watch the clip above for a better understanding. This post will have a real point, that I haven’t made yet, but I just needed to clarify the title which won’t really come into play throughout this post. To lay it out plain and simple, interactive TV is loose butthole.

Howard Stern was interviewing Mark Cuban and the Cubes made a comment that years ago people watched TV with a beer in a recliner. Nowadays, people are up against the screen with their computers out and tweeting anytime something happens. He referred to this as interactive television using social media. He also made a point how the success of Shark Tank was aided by him “tweeting” during one of the episodes and that helped create a bigger following. That in mind, it’s easy to see why Cuban believes interactive TV is the future of television and I’d agree Mark Cuban is generally ahead of the curve. I don’t disagree with this, I just don’t like it.

On Sunday I was watching the Walking Dead and decided to open up a laptop and follow along with their “story sync”. If I hadn’t of done this, this post would never have been made because I would have no real experience with this type of television. Since I did, I can comment on how it’s more of a distraction than entertainment. I found myself watching the laptop with their stupid polls and screenshots than the show itself. I was more concerned with how many “walkers” Darrell was killing or whether Carol or Axel were an item (that never came to fruition when a bullet hit Axel in the head), than actually watching the show. They also have a comment section with hundreds if not thousands of people posting throughout the show. This was also created commotion because it’s constantly updating and paying attention to the comments leaves you missing the episode. I will add though that some people are hilarious with their comments towards characters and story lines. Andrea is an asshole was a good one.

This is why Workaholics is tight butthole. I can just sit there and watch the show. No interaction, just sit and laugh. I don’t have to worry about story lines, tweeting, updates, or anything that requires me to do something. I hope the future of our television doesn’t continue to move towards interaction like Cuban suggests because now that I’m getting old, I don’t want to interact. Once you get old you don’t want to adapt to what the newfangled kids are doing. Revolt against change! Just kidding, but I still hope interactive TV dies a slow death along with social media.

Fall’s Openers Fail

I’ve watched 3 season openers this year of series that I usually don’t watch. The Office, Tosh.O, and Workaholics. Let me start off by saying that I thought all 3 were brutally horrible.

  • Let’s start with the Office. I understand that I’m not an Office die hard and maybe I’m missing some inside jokes, but I maybe cracked a smile once during the episode titled “the list” and that was when Stanley was telling people to shove it up their butt. I want to point out why I think this show is terrible and why morons like it. When Jim tells Dwight to throw him the phone and he speed pitches it at the wall. This isn’t sophisticated humor. This is try to get a laugh by being retarded. Another example of this retarded humor is when the Daryl said “all I got was this soda.” How stupid is that? I really, really, really hope that was an inside joke that I’m not aware of because that is not in the least bit funny. Pam is just the whiniest character who I can’t stand. This is probably the 3rd or 4th episode of the Office I’ve ever seen, and I have no interest to watch any more of this season, or the show.

  • Tosh.O season opener is beyond bad. This is probably the least funny show, that people think is funny, on Earth in 2011. The clips he shows can’t save the show because even they aren’t funny. He brings on this little black man who reminds me of Beetlejuice from Howard Stern to do some rapping for 5 minutes. It was one of those “feel bad for this guy because he’s really not that retarded and we’re paying him a lot of money for him to perform a shitty song.” I don’t even think that Daniel Tosh is that annoying but the show is just horrible. The one skit where the guy pretends to be the Dr was honestly some of the worst television I’ve watched. Aside from Tosh talking to the students in line format, I thought the show was the biggest waste of 30 minutes and want watch another.

  • Workaholics was the best show of the 3 but that’s not saying much. I was hesitant to think this show was funny during the first season but it sort of grabbed my attention. The plots were always kind of dumb but the characters were relatively humorous. They had some funny one liners and the chemistry between the 3 lead characters was entertaining. This season opener though was really dumb. With a dumb premise of thinking that their tax money paid for a dinosaur in a park that they decided to steal, it then got re-stolen by some high school kids who then overtook their house and threw a party. A few funny lines was all that carried this episode, my favorite being Adam saying “that was such a Tommy move” when he named the dinosaur Reptar. I still have some hopes for this show but it did not get off to a good start.
