The dilution of a TV series

It’s a sad day when a good TV series goes bad. It happens all the time and for various reasons. The most obvious thing is that once a new show is “good” or even “great”, it sets the bar for the following seasons. Ideally a show would want to be average and continue to improve but more often than not, no body watches an average TV show. So basically the shows that make it all start out good, hit their peak, and then descent down to nearly unwatchable. Once a show has been good for 4-5 years, there is no incentive to end at the height of the show. It’s a money maker and creators will milk it for what it’s worth. Starting from scratch is insane. Aside from The Wire, which quit after 5 awesome seasons, I have 4 shows that I think fall into this category.

The Simpsons

The first Simpsons episode aired in 1989 and has been continuing for 22+ years. This is unheard of. This is the longest running American sitcom. With 488 episodes, this will be my number one candidate for a show that has diluted itself into oblivion. Is this show still good? I honestly don’t know. I stopped watching 10 years ago when I felt the episodes declined into mediocrity. The ratings describe this as well. In 1990, the Simpsons drew 13.4 million households. In 1999, that total using the same metrics declined to 8.2 million. In 2000, there was a switch to actual viewers and that boosted ratings to 14.7 million viewers (which I suspect is comparable to the 8.2 million households.) In 2011, that number is down to 7.3 million actual viewers (probably half that in households.) The show has been on a decline and I assume they just continue making it because it’s the Simpsons and it can be put in history books no matter how shitty it becomes. No one will forget Mr Plow, Don Mattingly’s sideburns, Lisa needing braces, or who shot Mr. Burns, but no one will remember any episode after the year 2000.

Entourage

Who wasn’t fascinated with a look into Hollywood movie star Vinny Chase, his agent Ari and his amusing gang of friends in 2004. This show gave your everyday TV viewer a glimpse into Hollywood. Plot lines were simple with Vince’s attempt to be famous, E and director Billy Walsh’s conflicts, and Ari’s job trying to keep Vince out of trouble. The Aquaman season that brought Vince to fame and all the cool things that success brought was the height of the show. The Medeillin plot line in the 4th season is when things started to turn. The 5th season brought about Smoke Jumper, a movie with Vince as a firefighter, and a terrible decision to bring Turtle into a major plot line with a relationship with Jamie Lynn Sigler. If they would have made an epic 5th season and quit, this show would go down as greatness. Instead the 6th season is complete trash. Vince is out of the action, Turtle is in college, Drama on a TV show and E dating a girl (Ashley) other than Sloan was complete boredom. 7 was an interesting idea bringing Vince’s demise with pornstar Sasha Gray and 8 trying to save his career. The show, running only 22 minutes each episode, brought a show of celebrities and money that most people never have seen before. It was really entertaining even though the plot lines started to fade but this show was about 3 seasons too long. Stopping at the height of success isn’t easy.

Weeds

I can’t remember a show I was captivated by like Weeds. For 3 straight days I caught up and watched the first 3 seasons. A series about drug dealing, on Showtime, was a show that went that extra step with creative plot lines and a hilarious group of characters. The chemistry worked between Nancy and Andy, the family was dysfunctional enough to relate to and Agrestic was the perfect setting for a drug dealing female named Nancy Botwin. The series has been ongoing for 87 episodes which is more than it should have. The beginning seasons with Nancy and her rising role in the pot dealing was awesome. Nancy sleeping with the DEA agent at the end of season 1 made for the best season of the series in 2. The last episode of 2 with U-Turn, the Armenians and everyone else pointing a gun at Nancy in a room made for an unforgettable cliffhanger. I read the synopsis of 3 and nothing really rings a bell. I remember being interested but this show started fading. Season 4 with Esteban and the hole to Mexico is when it should have stopped. 5 is a pregnant Nancy dealing with Esteban. 6 was the worst season with Botwin family on the run and this 7th season was forgettable. I believe season 2 was the height of weeds. I seriously hope there isn’t an 8th season even though they had a Soprano-esque ending in season 7.

24

This was another series I caught up on in a matter of weeks. After watching the first season, I was hooked. After the 4th season, I was saying what the heck. The same plot line kept occurring. Someone was trying to blow up the world, there was a mole in CSI, and Jack Bauer would save the day. Season 3 was my favorite with the Salazar brothers. Jack’s heroin addiction, Kim and the Mountain Lion, Chloe’s constant annoyance and Jack falling for a female were enthralling. The hour by hour concept was also what made this show such a hit. It had never been done before and the shows attention to detail was unreal. However, once David Palmer went down and Wayne took over, I think the show should have quit. FEMALE President Taylor should have never happened. This show was as addicting as any show of all time. I still have great respect for this show but the last few seasons were just not as good. I have a feeling Kim Bauer should have taken the lead.

Something random

I’m going golfing at Talamore tomorrow with CK4 and Weller who was nice enough to invite us for a treat of a round of golf. I go in with little expectations of scoring but it’s always fun to play a round without waiting and a course that’s well tended to. I’ve developed a little hitch in my swing that is making me hook a lot of shots. Hooking is far easier to fix than slicing which I used to do 10 years ago but still isn’t fun. I’ve been hitting my long iron’s well though so I can always resort to that.

I watched Inglorious Bastards today and was unbelievably impressed. It does have that Pulp Fiction feel to it and just an all around entertaining movie. Unfortunately I missed the first 30 minutes so I will have to catch that at a different time but I saw the vast majority of it and know that it’s worth a watch. This movie preceded the Season opener of Weeds which I have seen the previous seasons of. I’m not really sure how to review Weeds. I commented that it is almost unbearable watching this show 25 minutes at a time with a week in between each episode. I really like the dialogue of the show but it’s starting to get a little redundant. They are always running away from something and yada yada yada. I’ll watch it but don’t have high expectations.

There’s something funny about facebook chat. First off I wonder how many people actually use this to actually chat. I don’t get the same feeling that I used to have like I did with AIM. You’d put up clever away messages and you’d never sign off and it was always a game for how long you could be on without interruption. I just feel like it’s creepy. Plus whenever it comes up it stalls my browser. I go on facebook because I’m bored and I want to lurk around and see what people are up to. When people send me messages it’s like they are sneaking up on me and invading my privacy. Plus it’s obvious when you are on because it gives that annoying green light so there’s no hiding like you didn’t see it. Then you get in a convo and accidentally close the browser and then it looks like you just ignored the person completely. I’m just not a fan and if you try to message me and I ignore you, now you know why. If I write back, be thankful to know that I like you enough to do so.

TV analysis

I’ve finished Dexter. All 3 seasons in 3 weeks. This series is the nuts. I would put it an extreme close 2nd behind the Wire. I actually might put it ahead because I haven’t seen the Wire in a while to make that accurate. If you haven’t watched it all then stop reading now because there will be spoilers ahead. The episode where Dexter proposes to Rita practically brought a tear to my eye. I usually am too manly to admit this but you really grow with the characters and it was really a great scene. It’s a show about a serial killer and I rave about the marriage proposal, gay I know but how can you not fall in love with Rita. I also thought Deb’s potty mouth was awesome throughout each season. I thought I would hate her character but she really was a good actress. Angel was probably the worst but not too annoying and Masuka had hilarious commentary at times. All in all it was good casting.

The story lines in every season were phenomenal. I can’t pick a best season. I thought the “skinner” was a little stupid but Dexter’s battle with Miguel was enthralling. The Bay Harbor Butcher put Dexter under the most heat. And the Ice Truck Killer season made a good effort at describing his background. I just really, really enjoy this series. Rita shows her tits, bad guys get offed, stories come together like you would never believe. Some things bother me like how Dexter took down Dokes with handcuffs on. Or when Miguel busts the Nazi freak, drive away and everyone just forgets he escapes. Or when the Skinner lets Dexter escape because he has his tools a mile away, wtf? I don’t really care though it was awesome and I’m upset I’m out of episodes. I guess I’ll wait till Season 4.

True Blood delivered once again. This is just an awesome show. People probably dismiss it because it’s vamps and freaks but it’s just so entertaining. How did the wife put her panties on with her dress down? Nevermind, Eric is the man but the Bill and the other bitch vampire is sort of boring. That’s kind of the only part that lets me down and for some reason they show way to much of it. Sam and the Maryann is heating up and I’m a bit pissed they axed Daphne. I’m really looking forward to next week when all hell breaks loose. Should be a good one. A final thought, I don’t usually go for red heads but Jessica! Nice.True_Blood-Jessica-Deborah_Ann_Woll

Entourage is biting it in my opinion. Turtle bores the hell out of me. Watching Vince and Eric bang random chicks is going nowhere. Drama is getting old. Ari is saving the show but Andrew Klein has got to go. What the hell was the mole behind Gary Cole’s ear? More Sloan. I’ll stop bashing and give them a one episode pardon but I wasn’t impressed.

Weeds tonight was so so. I don’t see where the season is going. I have lost interest in all the characters and only watch the show for entertainment. I don’t think this is a very good show anymore.

TV Time

I watch TV. I only watch a handful of carefully picked shows, but I think I have good taste in what a good show is.

Daisy of love is not a good show. This is a pure entertainment show. There is no good that comes out of this show. I DVR it so I only have to watch 40 minutes of it. The characters are funny though and I like watching other drunk people do stupid things, whereas it’s usually me getting drunk and doing stupid things. Down to the last episode and I could care less.

True Blood still has my interest although I didn’t think Sunday’s episode was the greatest. Not much to really write about, just a transition episode.

I watched Weed’s tonight. It’s ok. Silas and Shane have grown on me, I hate Celia and now Nancy is getting on my nerves. Is the one guy working for Silas and Doug in MTV’s Boiling Points?

I watched the Pilot of HBO’s Hung. I’ll watch the other 2 episodes but it just lacked substance. It was average, the main character wasn’t bad but the other characters all sucked. I wouldn’t recommend it but I’ll write about the other 2 episodes just for the sake of it.

I’m on a mission to watch the Dexter’s. This is a smart show that I completely missed the boat on. I don’t think it’s as good as the Wire was but it’s pretty high on my list of quality series. I just started Season 2 and hope to finish it before the weekend ends. I don’t really see any reason to break down why I like the show so much, I’ll save that till after I finish it.

Television

I’m watching 3 shows right now that I find entertaining. True Blood, Daisy of Love, and Weeds. I’ll start with the good, the bad, and then the ugly.

True Blood is an awesome show. 3 episodes in and I’m excited for next week. They leave a cliffhanger at the end of each episode which I think is fine. Some people probably flip out at the end of every episode but I think they are just doing a great job luring the viewers back. They’ve been showing Sookie’s boobs alot which I’m over. Tara and the ripped bro are really annoying. Sam and the crazy witch bitch’s relationship is heading somewhere. Jessica as a vamp kind of pisses me off because she looks so weird that I want to dislike her but for some reason her ability to do impulsive crazy shit is ok for me. Bill doesn’t really bother me and Eric is turning into the fucking man. Jason Stackhouse is gonna bone the wife eventually and even though I think his part is pretty lame so far, they are setting something up. This wouldn’t be a show I would usually like but I’m entertained by people having super abilities and HBO is just coming through with a fine series in my opinion.

Weed’s is the bad. I’m not really sure what happened. I’ll still watch it but for some reason the show just lost the allure. Maybe because it seems like “been there done that”. None of the characters really even get on my nerves either. I could do without Celia but I think Nancy is a good actress. Shane is retarded now but I can even tolerate him. Andy’s character seems repetitive and Silas and Doug keep up some funny banter. I’m probably being overly critical because I will tune in next week but I just think the show’s seen better days.

Daisy of Love is the ugly. Specifically Daisy is the ugly. These guys aren’t getting a prize. They are getting a washed up, enhanced stripper, whose face is just deceiving whether it looks good or not. Don’t get me wrong, I think the show is great and she plays the part fine. I know it’s ridiculous but the way these characters interact with eachother and the stupid shit they do, really make entertaining TV. Plus VH1 uses dopey music for some characters and they do a good job of pointing out the craziness of certain situations. The dude ChiChi on the show was the biggest pussy i’ve ever seen. The driving seen was retarded in the last episode. I don’t really feel manly watching this show but I find it entertaining.
