Look at the Copper Union logo. Visit their site - it actually has a dynamic function which changes, mirroring the mission of the school (cross-disiplinary creative education). Super successful - cost a fortune - but can be used in various applications seamlessly - and (finally) represents the historically progressive attitude and activities of the institution. Took them YEARS to get to it.
