Depositing Into Draft Kings

fanduel-draftkings-650x400Yesterday I took the plunge and put $100 into DraftKings to receive a $100 bonus.  Normally I’d take more advantage of a bonus but I’m trying to do a better job at losing my money at a slower bleed rate.

I’ve been playing Fanduel for a few years and this is the first year I’ll give DraftKings a shot.  I look at it as having accounts on Stars, Party, and Full Tilt.  If you’ve never heard of these companies, you don’t play fantasy sports.  Consumers have gravitated towards daily tournaments over season long leagues (which millions still do) because of the following reasons:

  • Action – games begin and end on a daily basis.  Players crave action.
  • More donks, less sharks – This is turning as more professionals are trying to make a living at daily leagues.  However, early on in these leagues, fish are everywhere ready to burn their bank account.
  • It’s addictive and feels like the lottery.  One lucky break in a big tournament and you can cash for tens or hundreds of thousands, even a million bucks.

The Daily Fantasy Sports Landscape

wsj-yahoo-dfsYahoo has entered the daily games which is a major step towards revenue.  A few years ago they got into allowing customers to play season long money leagues, now they are ready to allow daily leagues.  This is a smart decision but a bit too late as they are already trailing the leaders, Fanduel and Draft Kings.

Fanduel raised $275 million recently and has a post money valuation of $1.275 billion.  They had $57 million in revenue in 2014 with 1.1 million paid, active users.

Draftkings raised $126 million and is valued at more than $1 billion.  They had $30 million in revenue and 414,000 active users.  A huge benefit is that they struck a deal with ESPN that allows it to advertise exclusively through 2016.

Why I Deposited in Draft Kings

The British Open is this week and I want some action.  I’ve been following the golf closer this year than I have in the past and my theory is that hot golfers are the place to put your money.  Here is the team I assembled with the idea of swapping Louie into the mix.

Draft Kings Open 7.16.15

Jordan SpiethI read an article in the Journal today about Jordan Spieth and how good of a putter he is.  Here are the stats:

  • On average this year, when Spieth misses his first putt, the ball comes to rest just 23 inches from the hole.
  • He has 3 putted only 1.82% of holes played this year.
  • Relative to this competitors, his putting insides 20 feet is pedestrian, but from anywhere beyond that, he puts the ball in the hole nearly 14% of the time.
  • McCormick, who works with elite golfers at various levels, has given Spieth tests that can quantify a player’s green reading aptitude and said Spieth scores in “the 99.9th percentile.”
  • A tidbit at the US open that Spieth won on a Dustin Johnson miss.  They both had a putt of similar lengths for eagle, DJ missed his by 4 feet, Spieth 7 inches.  How to be a champ.

To go along with Spieth I added:

dannyleeDanny Lee – Won the White Brier and was 1 back of Speith in the John Deere.  From New Zealand and a flier.

Lee Westwood – Shee says he’s the best golfer never to win a major.  Most likely will be swapped out.

Kevin Na – Not great win stats recently but making 16 of 19 cuts is admirable.

Rickie Fowler – Won the Scottish Open and has sick results in majors.

Kevin Kisner – 4 top 10 finishes in his last 7 tournaments.  Value city.

Yahoo Did Something Right?

Yahoo is patiently waiting to stick Google.

Yahoo is patiently waiting to stick Google.

There was a nice write up in the WSJ today on Yahoo’s CEO Marissa Mayer and how the stock price has gone up 70% in the past year since she’s been in charge. I’ve followed Yahoo for quite some time now and it’s nice to see this company turn around a bit. My favorite line from the article was, “It’s no longer shameful to work at Yahoo,” an employee said recently. I still won’t use Yahoo for searching because I have no reason to switch from Google. It’s one of those close minded thoughts that no matter what someone puts in front of me, it’s going to take something profound that is going to get me to switch. Like every time I search I help solve world hunger. Still, Yahoo is doing something right.

Their news feed on the homepage is phenomenal. I’m not sure how long it’s been this way but it’s an endless scroll of news just like a Facebook news feed. I think it’s even tailored to what I’ve clicked on in the past which is both personalized good and creepily bad. My one gripe is the adchoices in between the real stories but I can live with that because every pimp needs to make money from their hoes. Yahoo already has a few strong suits to their company. Everyone, well not everyone, knows that Yahoo Fantasy Football is the premier place to play. Their finance section is tops as well. The only part of Yahoo that lacks is the search and to be honest, I never even use it because I get what I want from Google so I can’t realistically comment on whether it sucks or not. For me at least, someone who was born with Yahoo at the forefront and taking a tumble, I’m happy to see it revived.

New Yahoo & Various Others

Dear New Yahoo,

Please don’t insta move me to your search engine when I want to type in a URL. I know you think that this is a useful feature moving me directly to the search engine, but when I use you as my homepage, I know you aren’t google. I don’t go to yahoo to search. If I want to search I know I have the option. I like to be updated with news and have the ability to click in my url bar and go directly to a website without you thinking that I want to use your search feature. I honestly can’t figure out why people have google as their home page. It’s just a search box. It’s like saying, don’t keep me informed with up to date content, I’d rather do it on my own and be difficult. I actually own yahoo stock and their fantasy sports are the best so I may be partial but this site to me is the obvious home page.

In fantasy sports I went 2-2 this weekend. However I beat Hafer in a game that came down wire and destroyed the Wagon in my two wins. I lost in my ESPN one by 1 point and got blown out in the other one by someone with the eagles D. None of my players got injured so I’m expecting big things next week.

This is one of my few sober weekends coming up because of the distance run. I’m fine with it and can actually use the break. I don’t think I’m in the best possible shape but I should still be close to 6 minute miles. I’ll get a long run in today and then start to tone it down till Sunday although tomorrow will be another hard day.

This is a paragraph to Jordan Cohen. (In TeddyKGB voice) I’ll write in my blog vhenever zee fack I vant. If I don’t have anything to write about then I want. I don’t sit in front of the computer forcing myself to entertain your retarded ass. When I think of things to write about I do. OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD I SAID BACON AND EGGS!

And to leave on a good note. I can’t remember if I put Stacy Kiebler at the top of my hottest girls list but I came across a picture that really solidifies her position. I honestly don’t even think there is an argument anymore. Think of the StepBrother guy who does the POW! when you see this. stacy-keibler-thongs (341 x 533)
