Christmas cards are social pay-stubs. Have you ever gotten a card that didn’t engrandize the situation of the sender?

I love getting personalized, handwritten cards from people. I would definitely prefer that over a mass-produced generic card. I think it depends on the intentions of the person sending them out. You don’t know why exactly they’re doing it (out of obligation? do they enjoy it?) so it’s hard to judge.

I agree the generic cards are useless. BUT, as a business man, you should consider the fact that SOME of the recipients of those cards will think something like: “Hmm, who should I buy from this time? Oh right! That John Stortz & Co. sent me a card, I’ll give them the business!”. I don’t know how often that scenario would arise, but it’s certainly possible.

Additionally, I wrote / mailed two letters this week to people that I rarely see which makes seven letters total that I’ve done for the year. People are shocked (in a good way) when they see you’ve put even a little bit of effort / thought into something like that. That is much more impactful than the generic card.
