I have done this twice! Once at a Starbucks line in the airport and once at the Dunkin Donuts on 20th and Chestnut before work. Each time, I just turned to the person behind me as we were getting closer to the register and said "I'd like to pay for your order if that's ok." They always give some sort of awkward push back, but I insist, and they're fine with it. In both cases, they came to the register with me and I said "I'll have a medium black coffee and whatever he/she's having." Obviously you pick someone who's solo and not a mom with 5 kids. I also have to admit I had a gift card both times. When they said no you don't have to, I said no I have a gift card and I'd really like to use it. I have to say, I really enjoyed doing it, and I will pay it forward again. Absolutely not Trump for president...
