I sort of wonder if Google makes your page stronger with the presence of other sites linking to you or if it’s just a function of more people visiting your site because of that portal.

I wonder if we spent the day sending our page to hundreds of websites with the proposal of linking to them if they link to us would be worthwhile?

Valuable content and traffic are big parts as you mentioned, but there’s something else too that you missed. Inbound and outbound links have a big impact on SEO. If your website has a lot of other (good) websites linking to it, Google sees that as a sign of good content or a reliable site which boosts you up in the rankings. Same goes for if you’re constantly linking to well known sites, though I think linking to reliable sites has a smaller impact than them linking to you.

Unfortunately, us linking to each other and Gourlaysgoodies probably doesn’t do much for our SEO.
